97 850 T-5 is actually a fairly rare configuration in the US. There just weren’t many of them made. Definitely change that water pump and all the timing belt parts like the idlers, tensioner etc when you can. Changed an original one on a 97 2 days ago and while it wasn’t leaking or making noise.. it was definitely breaking down on the inside. That engine will go 500K+ if maintained!

Please replace the grey coolant reservoir cap with the turquoise version, the grey is known for failure of the pressure release valve!
And the chewed wire near the alternator goes to the coolant temperature sensor, if the ECU misses this signal, it runs a rich fuel mixture as it thinks the engine is cold. That the engine stalled can be because of the not mounted MAF-sensor.

Hi Mike, just so you know there is an easier way to change a timing belt without having to set it to TDC (top dead centre). On an engine not locked up, simply cut the belt half way along the whole length. Then simply fit the new belt on the pulleys, so you have one and a half belts on. Then cut the rest of the old belt off. Then slide the new belt the rest of the way. No struggling. All the best from the UK

He did say the 2 serpentine belts needed changing as they wipe out the cam belt when they fail. I wouldn't rush to replace the fuel pump either for now as it works and certainly not with one from a junker that may not work!

I just replaced the timing belt, water pump, pulleys on my '98 - first change. Original belt was fine, just a bit stiffer than new. No cracks. The new ones look identical to the original - you can't tell by the labeling. There is no "top dead center" on these motors - it doesn't work that way. The plastic piece at the top of the tensioner is inserted after you release the tension pin - you snap it in from the side and press home with a pry bar. That rodent damage would be very frustrating. Nice model of Volvo - hope you can save it.
