9:35 THAT FILL
It makes you appreciate Meshuggah more than ever.
Am I the only person that would kill for an in depth breakdown of Lethargica? Especially that outro...
Probably, but the rest of us would appreciate the breakdown a lot I'm sure
I have a way of making slightly dumbed down explanations of some Meshuggah riffs for myself. Here's one for the outro of Lethargica. I think of the riff as a steady rhythm of dotted quarter notes over a quarter note pulse. That creates a "three over four" pattern where every other note is on or off the beat. Meshuggah do a similar thing in most of Swarm, in the verse of Sane and prominently in the solo of Clockworks. The interesting thing about Lethargica is that they are doing the same pattern, but not playing every dotted quarter note. Try tapping along to the rhythm of the riff, and keep doing so even through the last note of the phrase ringing out. The next phrase will start on one of those dotted quarter notes.
@@Ragnarockalypse that’s a good way of looking at it. I think that Lethargica’s outro is rather easy to follow, however - that snare keeps moving and I cannot follow it after a while. I know that it’s a steady 4/4 beat, but it still somehow manages to escape haha
@@Goodstuff12345666789 Count making sure the snare is on the 3 if you count out 1 2 (3) 4, it'll help you to keep it in time :)
Lethargica has one of the meanest, groovy intros of all time.
So few things make me headbang so hard
Have you had any feedback from the band themselves? May-shuggah is now a calender event in my life.
NO BUT HELP ME GET ITTT
I'm trying to reach them but it's hard !
They're too busy recording the next album right now
@@supermot34 Yep. Some new stuff for Yogev to check out. :D
Mayhaps #Mayshuggah may summon their presence lol? 😂
@@YogevGabay I bet the great Morgan Agren could assist. He’s tight with the band, etc.
Riff 6 when it seemingly gets louder and his screams get more aggressive always gets me. Such a great song
Hell yeah !
My mama told me "just be a simple kind of man". I'm a simple man. I see Yogev Gabay video about Meshuggah - I slap like
That's pretty amazing how you can follow the riffs AND the drums together with your hands.
I was literally thinking that
Limb independence, you gotta have it as a drummer
@@dlxfuentes Or film it separately and then splice the videos together.
@@Ragnarockalypse yep way more likely.
@@Conundrummer1 erm have you seen this guy play drums? Way less likely I'd say....
It's crazy how you can break these cryptic riffs that I've been listening to for years and just make them make perfect sense
Happy to help !
Yeah man sometimes i listen to these riffs for days trying to get them. Then you might get them but then you forget :D
@@YogevGabay would LOVE to see a break down of Future Breed Machine some time in Mayshuggah, it's 8 to 10 amazing riffs that would be cool af in this kinda of an analysis
@@gregorycook5070 I spent 2 hours sat trying to work that out last week. Mårten and Fredrik's old lesson video helped me work out the insane guitar riff into the first 'verse'.
When I was a kid I was caught under a massive wave crash and I thought I was being dismembered by the chaotic force of the enraged sea. This is what riff #3 makes me feel.
For me, this song most perfectly rides the line between their absurdly technical and naturally groovy extremes. And it's just so astonishingly heavy. I love it!
Oh man. The world doesn't deserve content this good. You've got yourself another Patreon supporter!
OHHHHH thanks mannn!
Pfft more like Yolectric Gev, ammirite?
But seriously, great work as always! Thanks Yogev!
hahahahaha best
that fill makes this song ngl...
Mayshuggah lets goooo
Oh Man, this is one of my absolute favorite Shuggah tracks (due almost exclusively to riff #5), thanks for tackling it!
Oh yeah. I always considered this riff to be one of their heaviest/grooviest. The one in dehumanization being the one
@@IvanSKMK bro that gives me chills when I hear it, it's fantastic
Why can't I subscribe twice ?
Worked out Riff 4 (I know, I'm replying into the void to my 4-month-old comment) - it's literally riff 5 but they don't reset the riff after 8 bars, it just keeps cycling. Amazing how well they disguised it.
This is not my favorite song from Obzen, but this video is really good and has helped me appreciate Electric Red more :D
One of my favorite Meshuggah moments is when riff #5 breaks containment.
MAYSHUGGAH! Let's goooo
Bought two tickets for their Royal Albert's Hall show new year in London. Can f*+King wait for it!
I didn’t know songs could get this complex
MAYshuggah! I've been waiting
Love it. You should do Stengah next.
Seems that you've been heard! ua-cam.com/video/2iyd2zkgOU0/v-deo.html
The fill is there because it's where the remainder beats are and the riff resets, I think
Yup it's a 16 bar section that then resets. On the Alive record they just play one repetition of the 16 bars.
Boom exactly
Thank you man for all the efforts you're putting in this serie! Greetings from Morocco
My pleasure!
And if you have some Moroccan music to send over, I'd love tp hear! I wanna add some more to my Chaabi video.
Mayshugga sounds just amazing
If you will explain their longest song I from 2004 ep i think you will prove that you have master degree in math
I agree, I’ve been waiting for one!! Thee best meshuggah everything is in that song
The thing is, it may be completely random ! looking at it soon again
@@YogevGabay Tomas Haake once said it _was_ random indeed.
@@YogevGabay It is! If you scroll down Fredrik's instagram you can find a chart of the intro, it's insane to follow.
Owen McKinley also has a drum cover of the song that features a few written out sections on screen.
@@silverdoesmc891 ohhh Ill look it up !
THAT FILL is sprinkled throughout their latest record and VSOR, especially at the end of Phantoms! So dope!
Man, your videos are freakin’ AWESOME!!! Keep up this amazing work! 🤘🏾😝🤘🏾
In Meshuggah, everything is the drumkit
MAYSHUGGAH IS HERE LET'S GOOO
FUCK YES for Mayshuggah! \m/ \m/
Electric Red is my favourite ObZen track.
MAYSHUGGAH! Couldn't be more psyched
Love these videos into meshuggah. Love electric red. Love the explanation. Still baffled by what's going on🤣
There are no speakers in the entire world that could play that outro riff loud enough
Thank you sir the outro is what I tell people is the definition of djent it’s my favorite personal head banging riff of all time
One of my favorites off Obzen
Uhhhhgghhh, my head hurts already. And I LOVE it. Gonna be a looong, awesome, MAYshuggah!
Damn dude. What a bad ass idea to illustrate your videos. And bad ass time work, it’s all about timing!
Yay, new Yogev video!! Your content is the best man, I learn so much with your explanations, thanks a lot ♥♥
So cool you mentioned the fill! Always caught my attention. It's a great one!
YESSSSSSSSS I love it
Im ready for a full lifetime worth of meshuggah content
I'm SO ready to see Lethargica here.
There's like, 5-6 riff variations in this song that get juggled around. Especially the 2 riffs at the 4:34 mark.
Easily one of the best songs they've ever done. Forget Bleed, forget Combustion, Lethargica is where the Meshuggah groove lies!
Mayshuggahhhhhhh ❤ triple subscribed
Yeaaaaaaassssss Meshuggah month. Love what ya do. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Omg so much meshuggah😍
quite a way to start MAYshuggah! \m/
Mayshuggah! 🤘🏻
Just fantastic! Have been eagerly awaiting Mayshuggah and the first installment did not disappoint! Love your stuff, thank you!
Thank you so much!
Great video as always ✊
That ending fill is so tasty because it feels like its going to land right on the 1. But the guitar note that it lands on is slightly after the 1 and the drums pass over the 1 and accentuate the guitar note instead. It gives you a nice jolt. Im not a drummer so I dont know how to describe it.... but thats why it sounds so cool to me... and also because he starts riding a different cymbal after that.
this has forever and always been my favorite Meshuggah fill, i’m so glad you pointed it out
The whole middle part always sounded random to me, but now thanks to your visual representation it makes a lot of sense to me!
Riff#1: The backing track is playing in 4/4. So not all parts are the guest.
Riff#2: Hi-hat & kick is in 4/4
I always loved Haake's fills. It seems like no matter how technical the riffs get, the fills are always fkin BUTTER.
A whole month of Meshuggah?? And it’s my birthday month too??? Yogev you spoil me, love your vids man!!!
OHHHH happy birthday when ever that issssss
i'm so hyped for the rest of mayshuggah
Now you're just flexing your own drumming skills :) Love these videos, keep up the amazing work!
For the ladies you know
Meshuggah is what happens when god divide by zero. (Cit.)
Yogev I love your videos. For the first time in my life I am trying to think like a drummer thanks to you.
I've been waiting for this one! Explained it perfectly dude
Glad it helped!
That fill is really special, and I don't know why I love it too
hahahahah it epic
Outro riff is one of the heaviest in the werld
The outro riff is one of those legendary things that happen in music. Pozdro666
As someone with next to no musical background, I couldn't tell 7 sixteenth notes from four eights in the second riff. The little tad they cut those blows and melts my mind :'(
P.S. Did you purposefully film the explanation of the drummer's perspective with "I might be wrong ..." T-shirt? That was hilarious!
There are eight sixteenths in four eighths (which you probably know, but just pointing out since you said you had next to no musical background), so it is actually very similar in length. The main difference on a casual listen would be the "feel" relative to the pulse though, most people would tap their foot to the quarter or eighth note pulse which means that the odd groupings of 7/16 wouldn't line up with it. Every second 7 starts off beat, giving it an angular feel that can be very distinct even if you aren't actively counting the meter.
As with most things the easiest way to really get this is to just do it yourself, tap along at the rate of the four eighth notes and see how the sevens go in and out of sync. This exact kind of angular seven (and five) is all over the place, especially in rock and metal, so once you get a feel for it you'll probably start to notice it in a lot of other songs that you may not have realized had odd patterns as well.
Man I love that shirt hahahaha so arrogant and not what I actually think but its hilarious
I love these videos because you explain things from a drummers perspective. No one else does it better. Never change.
hahahahaha best
This is absolutely my favorite song in the world. Just amazing.
An epic May this is. Thanks for doing the hardwork for us, Yogev.
Thank you Yogev !
Amazing content as always!
Love this!
Beautifully done, thanks for the amazing content!
Wow. Man, thank you so much for doing these.
These videos are incredible mate thanks for putting in the effort!
Yes we are ready for MAYshuggah! This is great!!!
Nice work man!
Love your videos! Great analysis and so much fun! :-)
On point. As always. Keep the shit up!
Thank you for making these videos man, I have waited so long for breakdowns of these songs and similar bands. You deserve so much more recognition as well as meshuggah in general!
You are amazing at what you do!
Simply amazing stuff. Thank you for doing this. Meshuggah one of my favorites so it's incredible to get this in depth breakdowns. I'll be here for it all
How does this guy not have millions of views 🤦
I can not express how much i appreciate this content, meshuggah has been my favorite band for almost half my life. Could you do lethargica at some point?
Oh yeah, that fill is great. Love it.
This channel is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love playing through this on guitar. The ending fill is because the riff "starts over" there. Even though they could just keep going like the end of Dancers they choose to jump back to the beginning which makes the fill soo cool and a bit confusing.
מדהיםם
Easily one of my favorite Meshuggah songs. Thanks for the vid.
The way you explained the last riff blew my mind. I had never thought of that before. Thank you for this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Am ready for a full month of Meshuggah content.
One of my favorite meshuggah grooves
this month shall grant you a lot of new subscribers and good health is coming your way! you are still doing gods work my man!
This song, and Spiteful Snake, are my favourites songs on this album. Both super fun rythmically. Thank u!
Why isn't this channel taking off? Are you investing in advertising? Posting on social medias and online communities?
What's missing?
Copyright issues I would assume.
First of all, thanks a lot !
But yeah, I can barely do paid advertisements due to copyright issues. Plus I've only been at it for about a year and I guess this takes time!
Thank you, great work! I would love to see a breakdown of Ivory Tower which I think deserves more attention!
Another awesome vid! Any chance of " The violet sleep of reason" that songs twists my brain, but I love it! 😆
As someone who's covered this song (guitar), it's fascinating to see how different musicians internalize the same rhythms. There's some really great insights here and I can't wait for the rest of Mayshuggah
i’m so ready.
Love this rhythm analysis... Also glad to see you in a vid with Alfredo Rodrigez you guys are fire
I wonder how they think of "Riff 4", being as I think I saw somewhere that none of them read music. Notation's the only way I can get near it.
Thanks for what you do Yogev, you're a true UA-cam scholar! Shwesmo's Binary Farm has been cycling round my head for the past week.
They have the musical feel of gods. I really want to play by feel and most of the time it works out, but some stuff that Meshuggah and Gojira do, i just can't get it down with feel.
The intro to "Art Of Dying" by Gojira is still mind-boggling to me, i can't get it down by feel and i have to constantly count it and focus to the max. If i don't, i skip one beat and there goes the 45 beat phrase.
No idea how Meshuggah can write their songs from feel.
