because its rigged comparison, NeoGeoCD does RGB out of the box, but somehow here we get NTSC Composite comparison, the worst possible signal (other than using TV modulator)
@@rasz I would believe the purpose of that is composite is the most common and most known method, to show the dramatic differences.

RAD2X is far beyond Pound and Hyperkin cables. Im just stoked there's something easy out there that works well now.
RetroMoments The thing with the pound and hyperkin cables is that people constantly mistake them for upscalers simply because it’s HDMI when that just isn’t the case. They’re straight through bypass converters and nothing more.
RAD2X on the other hand is in a competently different league. Not only does it tap into the native RGB signal of the console but it line-doubles. THIS is what you want to get for anything older than the Xbox 360

@@bronzin1445 Id love if they were straight passthrough especially for consoles like the ps2 and psp. 90% of the time they arent and they are upscaling to 720p which introduces input lag. As well as the conversion causing obvious issues with color and brightness representation.
With the rad2x cable it linedoubles to 480 without introducing input lag or fucking up the overall image. This is why they are the superior option amongst the two.
@@bronzin1445 - The Pound and Hyperkin cables are scalers. They scale to 720p ( Its fixed ) and do not bypass the signal.
And yes you are right the RAD2X is much better, and correctly handles the signal, but it is also twice the price of the others.
@@albey1816 I was going to say that too. It's not that they don't scale--they do scale. It's that they use chips that were designed for scaling television or movie signals, where latency and "pixels" were never a consideration. Worse yet, the Pound and Hyperkin cables introduce variable latency. If it were a consistent latency, your brain would get comfortable with it, and you would time your button presses accordingly. With variable latency, your brain can never get used to it. You'll always be missing things that you *know* you should have landed. The RAD2X, Retrotink, OSSC, and OBS Control give a crisp, latency-free experience. Framemeister is also great, because even though it introduces 1 frame of lag, it's a consistent 1 frame.

If you're a tinkerer you can buy one Rad2X cable and mod it with a SCART input. It's a pretty good and not too expensive solution. I really wish they would sell it like that.
What would you say is the best upscaling solution for component cables? I have a PS2 and GameCube I play with component cables, but I have a cheap HDMI upscaler that doesn't have an option for 4:3 so it looks awful when I record through the Elgato.
@@Level1Sword Most of the time it's easier to just plug component cables in directly, but if you need an HDMI solution you probably need an OSSC

I would've loved a comparison between the PS1 cable and playing a PS1 disc on a PS3. If you see this comment, can you maybe describe how they compare?
The playstation 3 upscaling on ps1 games is kinda terrible compared to other options.

I'm interested in this. I was thinking of getting a PS3 but it's not the same. So now I'm thinking PS1 with RAD2x or Mini PS and modding it. I'm leaning towards modding the mini as I don't want to deal with memory card issues when saving

We need the OSCC Pro to be released as the high end solution for all our retro consoles, as the framemeister is severely outdated.
Now THIS is what I'm waiting for, that or HDMI mods for every single one of my consoles lol. Got the N64 UltraHDMI, and a CARBY for the gamecube.
The irony here is that the framemesiter is still considered god-tier in terms of upscalers, despite how dated it is. There's a reason why demand for it is so high

bloodmarth No, even with with OSCC and Retrotink, the framemeister still reigns supreme. It’s a premium product that goes for a premium price. Scalers like the Retrotink and OSSC are only mid-tier compared to the framemeister

Same here. Nothing beats CRT. It’s what these consoles were made for.
Also, you can still use a light gun with CRT👍I used all my consoles with HDTVs for years, but bought a CRT and the picture quality was like night and day in comparison.
So much for me hoarding my local craigslist CRT's! I think I'll dabble in the SNES RAD2X, that does look amazing.

It's nuts that we have these solutions now. So much variety. I have a set of HD retrovision cables for my Sega stuff and it doesn't work with my Elgato :/ so I might get a retrotink down the road
I end up using 4 different capture devices depending on what I'm working with: three Elgato and a Hauppauge. It's crazy what's required to get footage when you consider all the different generations of systems including old computers.
Your HD Retrovision cables do not work with your Elgato? I have the Elgato HD. Is that what you have?
@@Matt-Rat The Elgato HD doesn't support 240p over component or HDMI. The HD Retrovision cables do not upscale and simply convert the RGB signal to component.

@@Matt-Rat I haven't used any of those systems you mentioned, but since they all use a conventional 720p HDMI output, they all should work the Elgato HD. I've used a Cyber Gadget Retro Freak with mine and that works fine. You can use the HD Retrovision cables for recording, so long as you have something to upscale the signal into something that your Elgato can use. If you have an OSSC, you can feed the HD Retrovision cables into its component inputs and linedouble them to 240p. Unfortunately, the Elgato doesn't like anything greater than 2x coming off the OSSC and doesn't even recognize any PS1 resolutions or even the Dreamcast VGA mode coming off the OSSC, so I needed to route the OSSC through the HDMI input on my old SCART to HDMI to get any use out of it. Adam Koralik did a video on the device in question. A Framemeister is more fiddly and more extensive, but might be a simpler option than daisy-chaining all these devices together.
I've got the Rad2x for snes, n64, gamecube and it is wonderful. Waiting for the Ps1 version to become available again.
@D. Oh no! And I emailed them a couple of weeks ago to check availability so I must have just missed out. Tempted to get the retrotink component cable instead. Definitely making sure I'm on that newsletter now.
I have that RAD2X cable and if you think image quality is good, honestly you have no idea about what good quality means. Using a good RGB cable and OSSC you can get much better image quality.
@@cromy4589 OSSC is available in many stores worldwide, including Amazon. I got mine from a local seller in Spain (where I live) for about $180, including PSU and remote controller. Try out Amazon or AliExpress (probably cheaper here).
The ps1/ps2 cables are back up as of now but stock is limited. If yall want one now better act fast before they sell out again. Expect shortages and delays due to covid.

RAD2X are the best retro cables to get for playing your retro consoles on a modern LCD/LED. The scaling options are all programmed inside PCB board so this works great for the casuals and "hardcore" retro gamers. For anyone who needs to play their retro consoles on a modern TV, the RAD2X is amazing!
But for the "enthusiast" who are able to mod, re-cap, and possibly RGB bypass their consoles. They most likely play on a PVM/BVM (ie CRT) using RGB SCART cables or an HD Retrovision cable. Along with a scaler such as the framemeister or OSSC to play on a modern TV, the RAD2X probably isn't even on the retro enthusiast gamers' radar. But we definitely respect it!

If it's in your budget, I'd recommend a Vizio M658-G1 TV. It's 4K and all that good stuff, but also has one composite (red, white and yellow) input and component input as well. I hooked up my old consoles to a composite switch for those that don't have component and the same for the others. The TV does a pretty good job of displaying the content and it also doesn't stretch the image, although you can mess with it in the settings. Obviously this is a very expensive option as it's an entire TV, but it's a good TV with options for us retro gamers. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case it could help anyone.
In the future theres going to be so much tech hardware and software emulation to make retro games look so much better than they originally did. Its going to be great.

Just started using a Retrotink 2x Pro yesterday. I guess they really meant it when they said no lag, very neat stuff.
The lag is so tiny, it's micro.....seconds...
I still keep it real and plug them old consoles into my 36" Sony Wega Trinitron. haha

Best Method
I plan on getting a set of these for my own review. But without even using it, I can see two problems with the cable. One, there is no passthrough option. While linedoubling looks great on 240p and 288p games, it looks horrible on 480i and 576i games. I'd much rather that content be deinterlaced the normal way. And second, there's no workaround for light gun games or otherwise splitting the video to a CRT. If you're playing with HDMI, that forces you to use a HDTV. Since the RAD2X defaults to composite video if it can't detect RGB, why not include a secondary TRRS port that would allow you to send HDMI to a HDTV or capture card and composite video to a CRT for lightgun games.
@D. Well I AM a video expert, I'm a professionally trained filmmaker and restore VHS tapes for a living. Bob-deinterlacing is still linedoubling. In this case, you are doubling the lines that make up the fields. I've seen it on the OSSC and the RetroTINK 2X - it looks horrible. Think about what it is you are looking at. With 240p you have all 240 lines that make up the frame, so the linedoubler has all the lines to work with right from the word go. With 480i content, the device alternates between drawing the odd-numbered lines that make up the frame first and the even-numbered lines second. Meaning at any given time, the linedoubler only has HALF the image to work with. Linedoubling that means the resulting 480p signal is missing half the vertical resolution, resulting in an unnaturally blocky and vertically stretched image. Not to mention the vertically, making the picture look extremely unstable.
The Framemeister and even cheap SCART or Component to HDMI upscalers use a process called waiving. In which they buffer each frame, take the odd and even numbered lines that make up said frame, and put them back together again. THAT'S how 480i and 576i content should always be processed.
I hate to wade into this late, but a real CRT does the equivalent of bob, and full 50/60Hz titles often do the on-spec thing of having each field be a capture of the moment at which it is serialised rather than being half of a static frame, especially in the PS1 era when that means not having to keep a 480p framebuffer.
Weave is an option only if you make some phoney assumptions outside of the PAL and NTSC specifications, and is what often leads to combing artefacts in cheaply-converted material. It is most definitely not “how content should always be processed”.
I've had the RAD2X for my SEGA Mega Drive for a while now, excellent bit of kit for the price

Just chiming in. The N64 comparison really isn't fair. The non-modded composite N64 is only outputting composite at 480p. The ULTRA HDMI Modded N64 is outputting a clean rgb to digital 1080p signal. A better comparison would have been the stock N64 at 480p compared to a RGB modded N64 at 480p both using the Rad 2X. I'm pulling at straws here and i understand that you probably dont' have an rgb modded N64. Just saying this because ULTRA HDMI N64 mod's are virtually impossible to get anymore as the creator has stopped selling them and the only way to get one is via EBAY at scalper prices for $800 plus. A N64 RGB board can be bought from Voltar's mod shop for 30 bucks and is a super simple install even with most basic of soldering skills. Soap box over!!
Yup, the best you can do with N64 is S-Video. The irony here is that the SNES natively supports RGB and this isn't the first time Nintendo downgrade the video output. The GameCube Component signal is easily the best out of the 6th gen console yet the Wii somehow looks worse despite being a newer console
480i, you can't get progressive scan over standard composite cables direct to the monitor. minor nitpick.
@@bronzin1445 I can't say since I had no experience with the GC component cable, but using a 3rd party component cable on my PS2 on an old tv years ago, I was blown away at the difference. Colors popped and everything.
dapperfan44 The Wii component fare from a deal breaker but it does look noticeably worse compared to the GameCube assuming you have the proper setup. The Wii is perfectly fine if all you’re looking for is a way to play GameCube via component. Hell, it was method I used to play 480p GameCube games prior to the GCHD

From what I understand, the nintendo cable supports RGB mods like etim's N64RGB. It would've been useful to see a comparison between a RGB mod with the RAD2X cable and the UltraHDMI mod. UltraHDMI was completely out of stock when I modified my N64 and the price didn't help matters, I suspect other people would like to see how the RAD2X fairs with cheaper mods on the N64. Love the channel, your videos inspired me to hold onto my old retro hardware and to start collecting all the gaming stuff I wanted as a kid. Thank you!
Im not sure if MJR has an RGB modded N64, especially considering he has an utra hdmi modded one already. Maybe he didnt have one to showcase for the video? I also wouldve prefered an RGB comparison.

I also like to point out with the PS1 RAD2X: it might NOT get the RGB output you're looking for initially. Found that out when I hooked it up to my 4K TV. What you need to do is power up the console first, then power up the RAD2X cable, and it should blink purple RGB signal.
Does this rad2x improve the quality I picture on a 4k tv playing the ps1 ? Than just plugging in ps1 to tv directly.

If you buy the Genesis 2 Rad2x cable, you should be able to use it with a PS1 and Sega Saturn if you buy those adapters from HD Retrovision (although I have not tested it myself so would be good if anybody else could verify).
Already have a retrotink (which I am very happy with) but if I was buying fresh, I would get these. Not having to fiddle cables on retrotink is a big plus (honestly at 4+ consoles you start having to look at s-video or av switchers, so the saving starts going down).
i have a set of component cables, and a set of composite cables coming from behind the TV that terminate in female connectors, so i can connect whatever console I want to play to them quickly and easily, it's not a tidy, elegant, super convenient solution, but it's a lot better than having to go back behind the tv and plug them in, and a lot cheaper than getting all kinds of switchers, junctions, and couplers.
Man did that make the sega look clean!!! For sure getting one of these. Great vid

I really wish there were better options for the PS2. I wanted that Pound cable until I saw how the games looked with it on the MJR video.
The PS2 to HDMI adapters might be a better option for PS2. While they don't upscale, the PS2 has a few games that output at 480p and even 1080i. The RAD2X cables don't suppose those resolutions.
Sadly, the PS2 has the worst video signal in terms of modern consoles. Even with high-grade component cables, the video clarity is sub-par at best. Doesn't matter if it’s the fat or the slim model. Your best option is get the RetroTink Pro, hook the ps2 up that via component and use the linedoubler. That or get the fat PS3 that's compatible with PS2
@@bronzin1445 NO! NO! NO! NEVER use linedoublers on interlaced content. The PS2 primarily outputs at 480i or 576i. Linedoubling looks amazing on 240p and 288p because they are progressive signals. Meaning that the linedoubler has all the horizontal lines that make up the image right from the word go. An interlaced signal is drawn by displaying the odd-numbered lines that make up the image first and the even numbered lines second. So 30 frames per second is actually 60 half-frames per second. Not half as in chopped in half, but half the lines that make up the picture. This subsequently means that half the lines that make up the picture are unavailable to the linedoubler at any given time. And linedoubling that means you've sacrificed half the resolution to make a pseudo-progressive video signal. Sorry to be so abrasive, but anyone who recommends linedoublers for interlaced content should have their hands chopped off.
With the PS2, personally, I think RGB SCART looks much better than component. And since the PS2 primarily outputs at a resolution akin to DVD recorders, you can actually get away with using cheap SCART to HDMI or component to HDMI converters.

I purchased the HD Retrovision PS2/PS3 component cables and they are great. They are near identical as far as I can tell in quality to the official PS3 component cables I use to have. I wanted to include it in a HDMI setup so I have the component cables going into the Retrotink 2X (original model). Of course, if your TV has component, just buy the HD Retrovision cable and your set.

TIP :when you have the side power ups on Viewpoint you can use them to open the gates by making contact with the spinners - it opens the gate super fast

The RAD2X works great with an RGB modded N64 console. If you have one of those, the RAD2X is the best bang for your buck I could find

That Genesis footage is beautiful. I keep trying to look for solutions to clean up that system's lousy composite video, even attempting an S-Video mod that went absolutely nowhere, but this looks like it actually does the job. The only problem is that I have a Genesis Mini, which plays most of the games and outputs to HDMI natively.

The only hdmi cables for the psp that ive ever come across add a ton or lag or desaturate the overall image while increasing the reds. You're right, the psp definitely needs more attention.
I'll be looking into buying this for my PS1, and maybe Megadrive, cool to have one-off cord-based tech.

Yeah i hear it's a very wonky piece of kit, a lot of the library are just cd versions of the carts it seems and almost all the rest are japan exclusive. Ironclad was a cool one from the japanese ones, played it on the wii shop back in the day

I got the RAD2X Nintendo cable! I reviewed it, and its fantastic! Especially because it auto detects RGB! (Great for my PAL GameCube!) And I even got my N64 RGB modded to take advantage of that as well! They're amazing!

Okay so you *DO* need to have your console modded for RGB. I was curious about that. I thought this cable went in the console's original input with HDMI at the other end?
I mean why get your console modded, get a RGB cable *and* a Retrotink 2X when you could just get this cable that seemed to do everything, right?

@@rickvince It is a bit confusing. I touched on this a little in my review, but I'll expand upon it. For the Nintendo 64, it does not naively produce RGB video out. The RAD2X can auto detect composite and line double that, but it can also scale RGB if its there, which is better quality. It gets a little more confusing if like myself, you are a UK (PAL) gamer. Where American N64's can do S-Video (which most of the other N64 HDMI solutions use) but UK models don't. So modding the N64 (in my case) is a great option. Also, UK GameCube's can do RGB, which is also very good. Where as NTSC GameCube's do not. All in all. The RAD2X does not scale S-Video. But if RGB is there, the RAD2X will detect and use that, otherwise it'll use composite.
@@MVLGAMING Oh okay well I'm in North America so I'm guessing that RGB isn't even an option. Then again if that's the case then why did MJR bring up RGB unless his consoles are modded?
Also thanks but I have zero interest in the N64 I was actually more interested in the Snes, PS1 and PS2 and was looking at getting a Retrotink 2X and some HD Retrovision cables(for component) but maybe this is a better option?

@@rickvince The north american SNES, PS1 and PS2 consoles can do RGB natively without mods. The exception being the SNES Jr because they got rid of RGB when they redesigned the console. Only then would you have to mod your SNES.

This is what I've been looking for. I use LevelHike for all my retro consoles and so far after a few months have zero complaints. The ONLY console that's been a problem for me is the Gamecube. The one I own is the later model with only ONE port on the back instead of two so I can't use the GCHD device as that requires both and the componet cables are an arm and a leg. Finding a zero latency, HDMI, one port solution has been a huge pain in the ass. I almost was going to just buy a second Gamecube for $90 on Ebay for the 2 port version then the $150 for the GCHD but a $60 solution sounds a lot better to me.
I believe there is a mod that will allow you to remove the analog multi-out and install the digital port. I believe Carby makes a digital port only dongle. Model choices include HDMI only or component only. Something else to note. On NTSC Gamecubes, the Rad2x can pull only composite from the analog port. On PAL Gamecubes, it can also pull RGB, but only up to 480i.
Get the Carby by Insurrection Industries which is running on the same open source software as on the GCHD (GC-VIDEO) and is 70 or 80 US dollars and plugs into the digital av out
@@romerolemstra8747 I did end up getting one along with a gamecube with a digital port. It worked for a day then the laser on the gamecube died. So I need to get another one but holy moly for the one day it was working and I could see how much the carby looked it's a night and day difference.
@@chaospoet Well the Carby is a pure digital to digital adapter instead of the official component cable which has a digital to analog converter in the cable and that sucks but instead of buying a new GC there are problably disc drive replacements somewhere.
this is so good, i've got yet an retrotink 2x and all of my retro consoles can go through it to hdmi unless one, my rgb psone. So with this cable I can play again my ps1 without buying anotherone to plug in into the retrotink

I've had a RAD2X for PS1 since, like, March, and it's great. One caveat, if the light comes on and turns yellow, just unplug the power from the unit, and plug it back in, it should be purple and you can keep going.
It also works on PS2, it isn't PS1 only. The PS2 can get power from the system's USB ports, though.

I want to know this too. Does it activate the Progressive Scan mode on games that use it?
@@jeffdavis6657 No you can only get Progressive Scan from the Digital AV port on the Gamecube, the rad2x uses the Analog standard AV port and is only useful on PAL Gamecube's because it can output a RGB signal

I have a Eon Super64 and it works amazing. Works just as good if not better with the gamecube!
I'm glad I only have two retro consoles and hope one day to get a converter so that I can finish playing my PS2 or Nintendo 64 on my modern day TV.

I have a cheap adapter for my N64 and on Games like Gauntlet Legends in certain levels its hard to see what’s going on. Better cables like these would probably give me a brighter crisper image in those levels.
Ok, here is the thing - the primary reason for buying the retro system for most of the people is nostalgia and the want to experience gaming in an old-fashion way. I mean using discs and cartridges, wired controllers, boot screens, plastic cases with manuals in it, etc.
Each change that would affect the native way of playing will take us away from the initial goal. Now, I am not saying that using video adapters or upscalers is wrong or bad (that would be silly!), but it can ruin the overall experience from the retro gaming.
Before the "digital age," most of the households had CRT TVs which, due to their technological limitations, were hiding the imperfections of video games, thus improving their quality (after all, those games were made for CRTs!!). The picture was darker, less sharp, colours were often faded - and all this was well used by programmers and graphic designers to hide the lack of technology and power.
Those factors were never meant to be changed, but modern TVs and image enhancers definitely can affect them, and reveal all these imperfections thus discourage us from continuing to play.
Ok, the whole point I am trying to make here, is that people don't know what they really want. On the one hand - is the original experience, on the other hand - modern solutions.
If you are looking for the original experience, why not to think about the old-fashion CRT TV and RGB/sVideo splitter which wouldn't cost you together more than £50?
However, if you want the best image quality and more modern solutions then buy a RetroPie or other emulation device (Nvidia Shield TV) that will do the trick, and for the cost of about £40 to £80, you will be all set up.
The way between seems to miss the point. It is expensive, it often needs an extra power source (that means more cables to manage), and in the end, it changes the native game experience.
Please just don't take it as an attack - these are just my observations and opinions
Very good - smoothing certainly makes the graphics look a tad more modern-looking.
It's cool that modernising retro systems for current TVs is still being developed. Real hardware is much preferable to emulation whenever possible.
Apologies if I've missed it; are there any such devices to update/accomodate RF based systems such as the Atari (2600 or Amiga 500) from the original hardware? For me, composite RCAs/SCART would be great as it would work on non-analogue tuner TVs, but HDMI of course would be more future resistant.

I recently acquired a 32" Trinitron in perfect condition. My Genesis, Dreamcast and MasterSystem look spot on. No need for this upscsler thing. Great vid!
240p has to be doubled to see the image properly on newer televisions that don't support that resolution and it's the best way to experience these old consoles really because the 240p we grew up with was really 480p with half the image not filled in.
The best way to experience old consoles is to use a crt tv with scart port and an rgb cable
I wish you would have shown the PS adapter working with the PS2, I have one of the generic ones, it is ok, but I feel many games like the PS1 could benefit from the "slick mode" .. I mean smoothaning. I hope you do show it with the ps2!
