What I love about Playstation consoles is how much hidden gems there are to discover. Like with the N64 for the most part you know which games to get, Saturn more or less the same (granted they had smaller game libraries especially outside Japan). Still, it's fun to dig through the PS1 catalog and find weird niche games that no one ever mentions. This also stands for the PS2 and to a lesser degree the PS3. By the time the PS4 arrived I think platforms like Steam made finding weird titles more of a PC thing.
My favourite PS1 games will always be the original Spyro trilogy, but they're my favourite games of all time overall, the PS1 had SOOOOO many amazing games though, my favourite console of all time.

I guess it was too expensive for Sony to give us something like that on the Classic mini. Hey MJR, last night I watched the movie Black Roses being an 80s metal fan I loved it. Can't get more metal than that
The classic mini is a emulator, so they really can't give you something like that. They would have to basically redesign the PS1 to have a native hdmi output and basically restart the PS1 production again... no one will pay $2500 (I'm guessing low here) for that.
Black Roses is awesome-there are plenty of heavy metal horror movies you should check out as well if you liked that one such as Trick or Treat with Ozzy and Gene Simmons and Rock n' Roll Nightmare (Edge of Hell)
I mean, the PlayStation Classic (PSC, I like abbreviations) has HDMI, with great color, sharpness, and clean digital audio output. The 720p comes more from a hardware limitation of the Amazon Fire TV system-on-a-chip inside (not literally, but an equivalent SoaC), the lower resolution allows the games to perform smoother. Considering the original resolutions of these games, the PSC looks great 👍 I like my PSC, but I would have traded a few of the games around for a few of the more iconic or hard to get games like Nintendo and Sega did.

One thing that’s fair to note, is that the PS1 Digital is not compatible with every PS1. You need to make sure that your PS1 has a PU-18 or PU-20 motherboard. Later revision PS1s (SCPH-75xx and on) may not be compatible with this mod. Good news though, you can pick up compatible consoles for peanuts. Case and point, I just snagged a compatible PS1 for $20.

if you can choose what scaling method is used when you enlarge the lower resolution footage in your editing software, you want to use "nearest-neighbor", that way the footage stays just as crisp and pixely as the original

Besides, the mod is too risky , only people who have advanced skills in soldering can do it .$160 , not to mention what you'll spend in buying the tools
They must have changed it for the US release due to the negative connotation with the term speed freak referring to someone who is addicted to methamphetamine.
There are widescreen codes for the cheat discs or rom hacks that bake in true anamorphic widescreen for 3d games and some 2D (changes camera properties to squeeze wider field of view within original 4:3 rendering window, then corrects geometry when you stretch signal to 16:9 tv). It is epic and makes unplayable games playable. Zombie Revenge on Dreamcast for example. Garbage game became playable with a widescreen code because you can actually see the enemies and the environment around you
Great video! I can see how major PS1 fans would want this solution. I was like that with the Dreamcast, so I got a modded console with DCHDMI. However, with the PS1 I just don't have the same nostalgia because I didn't own one growing up when it was on the market. So for me, my PS3 (1st generation) will do just fine for playing PS1 games
I'm wondering if I can actually get the kit without being forced into some weird mail in process to have them install it like with the UltraHDMI kits. This solution is only for people that use HDTV. I cannot imagine someone who owns CRT TV and PS1 interested in this. Whole charm is this glow of phosphorus, softness of screen, real scanlines... Me personally as long as my CRTs are still alive will stick with pre HD consoles only on them bulky, fuzzy, screens :)
Eh.. 🤷🏻♂️ I just love the graphics themselves, not how they look on old TV's, it's the actual low poly pixilated graphical style that I adore. So personally I just play my PS1 games on PC at 4K, especially since you can play your original PS1 discs on PC's too.
Actually I am interested in getting the PS1 Digital mod to add with the Xstation I recently gotten but not yet installed but unfortunately the PS1D is never in stock and when they are greedy scalpers grab them and sell them for insane prices on ebay. That particular mod is going to be near impossible to attain right now until more are available where I don't have to overpay for one. While I do have a PS3, sometimes it tends to have lag and of course PS1 games are always emulated so there's always a chance some games won't work or with glitches. Won't have that problem on the original PS1 hardware.
It's not just the image sharpness here that's really impressing me it's the COLOR. The Ps1 digital is just the way to go it seems. (if the cost is right for you, of course)
This is really helpful video! The gameplay looks so crisp. When I'm ready to drop some loot on this, the ps1 digital is what I'll go for. Thanks for this!
You always do such an amazing job running comparisons - even factoring in the PS3! I am blown away with how fantastic that video output is from that modded PS1 though! Great video, MJR! 🤟
Moto Racer as a choice of demo for both audio and video was absolutely perfect. That game has an amazing sound design and the super fast racing style demos well. As soon as these are back in stock, I am ordering one!
@f8talh8red I remember when a very intelligent and famous person said no one would ever need more than 512KB of RAM. Another famous but not intelligent person said the iPhone would be a flop because who wants to carry a computer in his pocket. My point is never underestimate the advances of technology. We will probably see large graphical increases in the future even if we see plateaus now.
3:37 How does it handle multi-disc import games? Those are usually the bane to most boot disc import options, because you need to keep a spring or something stuck in the internal lid button and with the button pushed down the console doesn't know you've opened the door to swap the disc.
Huge ps1 fan i used to have one but it died on me then i kinda stopped playing on playstation and just about 1 year ago i bought a modded ps3 now i emulate ps1 on it and im happy with the it playing on a flat screen still looks good This mod does look good tho! Nice content metaljesusrocks!

Looks fantastic! I'm so glad they added customisable scanlines too! I just wish there was some time of filtering to go with the scanlines, just to soften the image a bit so the pixels blend better, that would be amazing. I don't know if we were meant to see the pixels this sharp but I DO want to start with that level of sharpness and then soften it, rather than have it done via crap upscaling/bad bilinear filtering like the RAD2X.
Haha I had to laugh. That point where you mentioned that you can still use the regular video output a commercial poped in and the audio went "... technically you can still use... organic hops"
Looks great, but not enough difference between the PS1Digital and PS3 backwards compatibility for me to justify 160 dollars, even with region free. You can but a 60gb fat PS3 for that amount.
NFS High Stakes...Best racing game on the ps1 in my opinion. Soooo many memories of that game and Driver 2 and Crash Bandicoot. I wish i could go back those days again.
This looks way better than the RAD2X to me. Those looked kinda blurry in comparison and the whites weren’t as bright as with this one. EDIT: Just got to the comparison part and it’s not even close. 8:09 look at how much brighter the clouds are here.

I know what you mean. I'm split on this, I like some games in HD and some in old school CRT.
MechaMinilla99 at that point your just playing PC though, not my style but to each their own.
2:38 I thought he was gonna say it does NOT void your warranty. 🤣
I'm satisfied with using my ps3 for ps1 games but this does look really nice. I'd rather spend money on the new ps1 ODE if I was gonna do a mod
What is o d e
@@waltersobchak7275 optical disk (or drive) emulator. Like the GDemu or fenrir. Replaces the disc drive and plays games from an SD card
@@deniskenn you're a lifesaver thanks bro
@@deniskenn Where do you get the ode?
John Ston castlemania games. Not available yet.
The OG Playstation is my favorite console. I plan to pick up the Digital so I can play on my modern TV. Thank you!
At that price, I'd rather buy the RetroTINK 2x.
I wanted a comparison, he just compared with Rad2x...
Just use a PS3
Actually I am interested in getting the PS1 Digital mod to add with the Xstation I recently gotten but not yet installed but unfortunately the PS1D is never in stock and when they are greedy scalpers grab them and sell them for insane prices on ebay. That particular mod is going to be near impossible to attain right now until more are available where I don't have to overpay for one. While I do have a PS3, sometimes it tends to have lag and of course PS1 games are always emulated so there's always a chance some games won't work or with glitches. Won't have that problem on the original PS1 hardware.
The main problem is how to play lightgun games?!
Theirs a solution the gun is about 100 bucks
CableJesusRocks back at it again
Liking scanlines is an early warning sign that a person might be a serial killer.
Love watching ur videos got me into collecting all the old games I used to play. Keep up the great work.
It's not just the image sharpness here that's really impressing me it's the COLOR.
The Ps1 digital is just the way to go it seems. (if the cost is right for you, of course)
My thoughts exactly. The difference feels night and day at 8:30, the reds really caught my eye
True magic is still CRT.
This is really helpful video! The gameplay looks so crisp. When I'm ready to drop some loot on this, the ps1 digital is what I'll go for. Thanks for this!
Picture pixel perfect 👌
That Stan Lee intro from the Spider Man game takes me back to a simpler time 😷⌛️🧻
God, what a difference such a thing can make.
Use either a MODDED ps1 classic or an Nvidia shield - 4K out put on the shield and the games look FANTASTIC
You always do such an amazing job running comparisons - even factoring in the PS3!
I am blown away with how fantastic that video output is from that modded PS1 though! Great video, MJR! 🤟
Glad you enjoyed it!
I been watching this channel since I was 16 I’m 22 now I will always have love for this channel
Great video thanks. I’ve been thinking about doing the install but seeing this compared to the other solutions helped me to decide.
Moto Racer as a choice of demo for both audio and video was absolutely perfect. That game has an amazing sound design and the super fast racing style demos well.
As soon as these are back in stock, I am ordering one!
Damn its good especially DOA1 i thought you playing DOA2 on PS2 LMAOOO looks freaking good
WOOW! What a beauty! Congrats Jason 👍
OMG! I need this mod!!!! PSX is my favorite plataform and that is my favorite generation from videogames.
Graphics have improved so much in a short period of time
@f8talh8red I remember when a very intelligent and famous person said no one would ever need more than 512KB of RAM. Another famous but not intelligent person said the iPhone would be a flop because who wants to carry a computer in his pocket.
My point is never underestimate the advances of technology. We will probably see large graphical increases in the future even if we see plateaus now.
I don't get it. If someone will modify an original console this much, why not just ... (wait for it) ... emulate on the PC?
Outstanding!
I figured this PS1 would be your thing, Reggie! Hope you are doing well and staying safe buddy 😎
MetalJesusRocks I’am bro. Actually playing some old school Ps1 games like Dino Crisis right now.
3:37 How does it handle multi-disc import games? Those are usually the bane to most boot disc import options, because you need to keep a spring or something stuck in the internal lid button and with the button pushed down the console doesn't know you've opened the door to swap the disc.
It's totally not interfering with that.
PSnee, MM3, Mayumi etc are your friends
@@kamilpotato3764 Personally, I use the Vita to play backups of my imports.
Looks AMAZING. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching!
Huge ps1 fan i used to have one but it died on me then i kinda stopped playing on playstation and just about 1 year ago i bought a modded ps3 now i emulate ps1 on it and im happy with the it playing on a flat screen still looks good
This mod does look good tho!
Nice content metaljesusrocks!
This channel is awesome
Im so happy you showed off rollcage stage 2 super underrated in my opinion
I really love playing that game. The frame rate is a little low on PS1, but the crazy gameplay and surprisingly great graphics are top notch!
@@MetalJesusRocks ok first wow i didn't expect a response rock on!! second i know what you mean!! the new game grip it definitely holds up to the classic!
Love these vids. Nice & simple
Thanks for sharing! This won't be for me but I'm always amazed with what people come up with
The serial port was not just for connecting 2 ps1’s together they where also used for game controllers like the light gun controllers for different games
You are such an inspiration man 😉 I ordered 2 original PlayStation s video cords, a switcher for them and a retrotink pro just to get the best out of my PS1 and 2. Waiting for it to all arrive can't wait ☺️
Fantastic video! Great work!
Thanks a lot!
Wow the ps1 is reborn...never knew of this mod...great vid...
Wow! The 2D games look like modern pixel games with the mod.
SNK did not fuck around. They're hella talented.
A blue Playstation 1 case never seen that one before but it looks cool!
Savage Mr. Fox where is a place you recommend?
love that case! Goes well with the OEM crystal blue DS2 which I owned 😁
Awesome video MJR! Superb job on the comparisons. Thank you.
Looks great, but not enough difference between the PS1Digital and PS3 backwards compatibility for me to justify 160 dollars, even with region free. You can but a 60gb fat PS3 for that amount.
This is really the best I have seen thus far. Very pretty and beautiful!!! Thanks Metal Jesus!!!
Wow this is a day/night difference, really awesome
Oh man! This is the exact mod I was interested in doing to my ps1. Stoked for this!
NFS High Stakes...Best racing game on the ps1 in my opinion. Soooo many memories of that game and Driver 2 and Crash Bandicoot. I wish i could go back those days again.
Love me some Einhander. Playing this game on an HD tv was the main reason I bought a ps3 a couple years back.
Einhander is one of my favorite games on PS1!
Were did you get that transparent blue PlayStation?
These vids rock, and help me out a ton with tech know how and Gabe suggestions. Plus they're fun entertainment.
This looks way better than the RAD2X to me. Those looked kinda blurry in comparison and the whites weren’t as bright as with this one.
EDIT: Just got to the comparison part and it’s not even close. 8:09 look at how much brighter the clouds are here.
