Anthony Note: Lots of people commenting on the RetroTINK Short Circuit saying SCART can adapt composite/S-Video and the Koryuu is unnecessary. This is half-true. The problem is with the OSSC - it’s only *wired* for component/RGB. Those adapters don’t actually convert the signal. Koryuu does.

I am not sure if this helps but here in Europe Composit( red, white, yellow) to scart adapters were very common, in fact so common that they came with all sorts of devices

@@misatzu People should stop thinking in term of scanlines when it come to CRT emulation. This is so limited.
Retroarch modern shaders emulate the whole phosphor grid/mask of a CRT, and they are amazing on a 4k oled.
Many PVM owner have ditched their CRT after seing it.
And it's software only (GPU).
The funny thing about coaxial cable is that the oldschool implementation of it used a very slow clock speed. This really limited its capability. Now in modern settings you can send 4K lossless video over them for up to 80 meters! That's 12Gbps! Many television studios use this today! Things get even more crazy when you consider high end data centers pushing upwards of 53Gbps on a single coaxial cable!
I've tested coaxial cables sending information at 12 Gbps. It's amazing how much data can be sent across them with surprisingly little loss.
@MarcW: that is sort of disingenuous though, HD-SDI using a coaxial cable isn't really using a simple signal so much as a packetized data stream over copper in those instances, similar to something such as ethernet.
Moreover, you are still better off running SDI over fiber at distances, just like ethernet! Not to mention, these days there is NDI, if for example you want a 19km cable run. Coaxial is not ideal for that by any stretch of the imagination.
Moreover, Anthony *explicitly said* RF. The connector and cable are just one piece of the puzzle, RF signals are intrinsically worse for quality than even composite video, regardless of the cable utilized. At least composite video splits the audio out entirely (usually into left/right RCA cables) whereas RF is just one cable to "rule them all" and do all the signals a disservice in the process.

@@dvdkon7165 Yeah, as long as it's not analogue of course. That being said, that's only an unidirectional signal like for television with DTTV signals or DAB radios. As bi-directional, most people still receive internet through their phone wires which are basically just a pair of copper wires. You can get up to GB's of speed with those, especially using the G.fast technology which is pretty neat. Same goes for Wi-Fi or 4/5G, your antennas are a simple pair of wires with a fancy tip.
All in all, it's the underlying technology that matters and the energy put into them, not the wires by themselves. : )
I remember downloading programs and getting happy when I hit over 1Kbs download speed about 15 years ago.
Just to give some additional information from Europe where we actually used those plugs: You don't need additional (active) hardware to get the video signal that goes through the yellow composite plug to work.
SCART being the plug of the many pins it not only carries an RGB signal. It also has pins for composite. So all you need is a composite-> SCART adapter. In fact pretty much all consoles in europe shipped with exactly that inside the box because our TVs usually had multiple SCART inputs but at best one composite-in.
For Gamecube and Wii you then were able to purchase the separate SCART cables which gave you better picture quality because you were actually using the RGB-pins in the SCART cable instead of composite.

True although by the time GC and Wii came out I think most of us had switched to Component cables
Even the S-VIDEO cable can be used with an SCART adapter without issue.

@@emily-young that's rather unfortunate. That composite fallback was one of the main reasons that connector was so popular in the PAL world. It was basically the USB-C of the AV world. One plug to cover everything.

Those things came with every peripheral i ever purchased for my old tv (DVD players, gaming consoles, VCR etc).
@@RaXXha If it's SCART to HDMI, it probably introduces latency, which is no problem when playing movies from an old video player, but is a problem with game consoles.

See, finally something that actually interests me. I have an overwhelming amount of cables, wires, and consoles all interconnected with weird upscaling and deinterlacing filters so my image ends up being recorded as clean as possible, but this might actually be the thing that finally replaces all of that and gives me a simple export image that I can then record painlessly.
That's awesome on so many levels, not only is Anthony hosting, but it's also about retro games, presented by someone who knows what he's talking about AND uses S3K, Sonic Adventure and Giana Sisters as examples. Thanks Anthony, you made my day :)
Any Anthony video about retro gaming, upscalers, RGB and such will always be my favorite.
It's worth noting that Mike Chi continues to offer firmware updates with amazing new features. Even this demonstration includes options that were not available when I purchased mine. The Retrotink 5X Pro only gets better with time.
i got me one and the firmware updates for this thing make it the gift that keeps on giving. i have 13 consoles connected to it and they all look amazing!

The greatest thing about the 5X is how much mike chi has updated it since launch such as the smoothing filter he swore would never come out
Here, scart was super common for VCRs, DVD Players and such. Every tv had at least 1 scart plug, and often 3 or more. Obv it's not as common now since HDMI but TV's as recent as 2019 still had a scart plug. We also used scart adapters too, it's quite versatile. The PS3 came with a scart

I own an OSSC, and I agree with much of the points. I only have two retro consoles and had enough patience/time to do the setup, but having the plug-and-play experience via that RetroTINK would appeal so much to one facet of old video game systems to be plug-and-play also. I'd want a 5X Pro too someday.

I play on RetroTINK 5X Pro for a week. After OSSC it's a blast! Love it, how simple and effective it is. Last firmware add new smooth filter which is Godtier.

Albeit, it is with more than a little consternation that while I worked at The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment in Oakland, we did have some Sony PVMs and even a Mitsubishi MegaView Pro as RGB multi-sync capable display monitors, but we had a decided absence of decent RGB(HV) cables for the consoles in our collection.
Many of the older consoles support RGB(HV) outputs natively (e.g. PCエンジン via its EXTBUS, Dreamcast via the official [and less official] VGA box, and PS2 via the VGA adapter which came with the PS2 hobbyist targeted Linux devkit Sony offered. As just a few examples out of ones which I previously owned, though never donated to the museum, some of them were donated to other collectors or remained in my possession), others may require a bit of modification to get RGB(HV) output, and custom cables with such things was the norm.
I found it more than disappointing that despite working with the museum, and other volunteers also having expressed interest in improving the available video quality we could provide to our patrons, that the budget and funding for such things never seemed to materialize nor trickle down. Same goes for OSSC donations or utilization. I guess it should come as little to no surprise that while themade.org closed its doors to the public in March of 2020 with shelter-in-place regulations (who knew, video game museums were not considered an essential business? -_-) and put its collection into storage circa September, there was really not much in the way of donations or assistance provided, despite requests.
I certainly saw some more recent video game museums, e.g. in her majesty's UK, which seemed to be hitting or even exceeding their donation goals effortlessly, so whoever has better PR teams and online community building seems to win the war of money raising. Meanwhile, older more established entities seem to be largely ignored or forgotten. Oakland, CA also got injected with all sorts of funding for an Esports Arena, but despite hosting SSB tournaments at The MADE and doing all sorts of community outreach, offering free programming classes, working with youth internship programs, and other underserved communities, the 501c3 nonprofit couldn't keep up with other vested monied interests. I swear it felt as if on some of the rare occasions when we did get visited by employees of game companies, it was almost as if we were being scoped out as a piracy lair, despite having had a Library of Congress granted DMCA exemption, and many ongoing efforts in preservation which are publicly documented and shared, not the least of which was having helped to get the first MMO (Habitat) running again as NeoHabitat (neohabitat.org).
Anyway, sorry for that tangent. I will say, decent RGB upscalers are not exactly new. I previously owned a Micomsoft XRGB2+ and XRGB3, but they seemed to offer a lot less versatility than today's offerings, and even higher asking prices as imports to North America. Albeit, some of those models utilized JP21 (which is the same connector as EuroSCART, but a different pinout) and even D Terminal (which was offered as an official cable accessory for the Gamecube in Japan). It almost pains me to think how much I invested over the decades in my personal collection, only to see collections made available publicly, offer so much less. C'est la vie!
Funny thing about working for a video game museum for a few years: it kind of destroys any and all desires to play video games, and the already mercenary industrial complex tinged gaming industry, and its target demographic, start to seem substantially more evil and a lot less willing to learn the technical nitty gritty of something as basic as a decent cable wiring configuration to a CRT, let alone low level programming. Despite that, videos such as this seem pretty decent! Good job Anthony!
Certainly, the depths of video signal processing are a lot more than can be summarized in an 18 minute video, too.
At least personally, I think it is pretty impressive that the market still sees a reason, and apparently paying customers, to continue manufacturing devices to enhance classic console experiences, not just the OSSC and RetroTINK-5X Pro either. To wit, TerraOnion's Super SD System 3 has RGB output, the うーぱーぐらふぃくす / UperGrafx offers DVI output, and most recently the TerraOnion Super SD System 3 Pro now provides HDMI output, all of which should theoretically function A-OK on the 1987 released PCエンジン「engine」 via attaching to the EXTBUS. I've even tested at least one of those models on the PCエンジンエルティ「engine LT」!
Alas, my life is no where near fun and games these days, and I have a lot of real world challenges causing daily distractions and strife. Maybe I will get past my burn out and be able to enjoy stuff such as this again eventually, but I won't be holding my breath.

Loved my OSSC, and used it regularly for a few years, and was lucky my TCL 4k TV actually supported it's max 1200p output. Could never get a scanline mode dialed in that looked really good, and the res switching dropout was always an issue, even with PS1 games like Chrono Cross. Even with FBX's excellent profiles, you may still need to tweak settings for your console. Did not regret selling it to pick up a RT5X.

I think my favorite feature outside of the excellent deinterlacing is the non-integer scaling. I finally have a use for my 540p Sony XBR that has otherwise just kinda sat around.
Also: update the firmware if you buy one, folks. If he had just unboxed that for the first time, he didn't have the current feature set

The second coaxial cable image shown was a BNC connector and is most often used with RGB or component video signals.

Got the RetroTINK 2x Pro when my TV died under warranty and the replacement didn’t have composite input. The GameCube and N64 live on, and in better quality 👍🏻

LOL I love how he talked about the other model being very nerdy and complicated, then continues to get me completely lost in 50 different video mode options for this "simple" device.
well I mean it's pretty simple. It just has different timings for different consoles. Only thing you need to do is hook up the console, and select the correct console in the menu. If you compare that to having to do your own research on the console timings and scaling. Choosing from a menu is nothing.
Although doing it yourself doesn't seem that bad to me personally. At least you learn something i guess.

The cables shown in 0:58, are actually S-Video and Composite, which can be used with a cheapo SCART adapter, because SCART actually carries in its pinout S-Video and Composite, so no need for the transcoder later mentioned.
Edit: the adapter I mentioned is the one shown at 3:43
OSSC won’t take the signals though - it only supports component and RGB over SCART

Thank you Anthony, this video was SUPER cool, I'm not much of a retro gamer (just a bit before my time for a lot of this stuff) but it is super cool to see how you can still use this stuff after all this time. Now one question I have is there a video out there (maybe a future LTT video) where we could actually see a side by side of these consoles plugged into a modern moniter with something like the retrotink or OSSC and then plugged into an actual CRT (or appropriate monitor) and see just how close you can get them to look like they used to?

It really was like that though. I knew a few kids whose parents refused to get a dedicated gaming machine. But the Commodore, Amiga, etc were technically computers so yeah. They got made fun of, but they got the last laugh when suddenly in the early/mid 90s computer gaming went full 3D long before consoles.

I love this box for my PS2&Genesis hell even PS1 games look awesome, I heard hooking up a PS3 or 360 gain some Visual improvements.
I noticed with later updates the picture has improved though the only thing I don’t like is for some reason my picture isn’t centered fully in 16x9 I think it’s game to game on how it was made, if possible would be cool for overriding it to do a fully custom screen fitment.
I got one of these and oh my it really is amazing. I tried GameCube to carby to portta to retrotink5x and it’s so crisp my eye balls starting bleeding.
Edit: would be great if you could do a update video on the news firmware and experimental features. I really like your chill and paced presentation style.

I am here to find the best fit specifically for my Dreamcast and Commodore 64. I use Framemeister which is almost perfect but the only thing that really annoys me is the time duration to capture the signal. It takes a few seconds when I boot my C64. For Dreamcast, it's even worse when resolution changes (also for specific games like Gunlord or Xenocider it often losts the signal when switching from the intro, or displays in black & white). I am missing old good analog times when display was just always there, without even slight delays. Thanks for the video and covering C64, that's awesome! I will dive in more into frame lock / sync options, but not sure if I can find anything perfect in that matter. At least, for RetroTINK it looked like this timing was way shorter, but still, I need something perfect for my beloved Commodore 64.
