  • Lao Shan Lung is a very famous monster, but his fight has never been the best fight. But what if he was? In this video I propose a few ideas I have to perhaps elevate Lao Shan Lung to the heights of greatness, at least in my opinion.

While enraged all he really does is pick up skulls, cause a few explosions, and shoot a dragon laser.
Then you look at Akantor, one of the simpler monsters and not even an elder. He is constantly rushing at you, digging around the arena, his roar hurts you, slamming his tail at you and lobbing molten rocks at you. If Nakaros did what it does while enraged as its base, it'd be better.

I really liked this video. Also I had a similar idea but for zorah Magdoros (based on a idea for a Mh fangame idea of mine where it’s fight makes use of a new mechanic where you can fight monsters on ships on sea)
It’s gonna be pretty big so brace yourself
    Zorah Magdoros
The fight will be remade into a ship battle where you and your hunters have to stop zorah Magdoros before it reaches port tanzia and wrecks havoc
    Phase 1.
You and will have to find a way to get on zorah from your ship in order to break the magma cores in a effort to weaken it as much as you can before phase 2 where the # of magmacores destroyed will determine how weaker Zorah’s attacks will be.
    Phase 2.
Zorah starts to stand up, dwarfing your ship by many times. Now you have its full attention for now and you’ll have to use the time you got to use the artillery of your ship accordingly in order to predict and counter the moves of Zorah as it would only take a few hits to destroy your ship, especially as you may have to avoid magma every now and then as your aim now is to break as many parts of Zorah Magdoros as possible albeit do it in a smart yet efficient manner before Zorah sets back course to port tanzia
Ballistae will come in handy for dealing with monsters like Barnos that may become problematic as wel as dealing some consistent damage to zorah if no barnos are in the way.
Cannons are good for pushing zorah Magdoros back if it tries to come and crush your ship with its body which could end up breaking its legs, which can slow its advance to port tanzia in phase 3
Mortars to its head are good for if it’s charging to shoot a powerful burst of magma which if you keep countering its magma burst attack with the mortar. It will break the head which can slow down the charge of the magma breath attack from its mouth.
Harpoons can bind Zorah from unleashing its storm of magma from across its vents on its body that can otherwise be very hard to avoid as they cover across the entire area you fight it in.
Dragonator should be saved for when zorah would pick your ship up where the dragonator can have zorah drop the ship back to water while dealing hefty damage while also breaking its body leaving it more vulnerable to damage.
After dealing enough damage it will try to unleash the most powerful burst of magma from its mouth and violently explode out as many magma out of its vents where the only option now is to sail away as far as possible and regroup at Port tanzia for the final phase as staying will have you and your ship melt away from the immense heat expelled from the explosion
    Phase 3.
You and port Tanzia will now make the final stand against Zorah Magdoros who is coming ever closer to port tanzia. However this time all the artillery of your ship you use accordingly, a bunch of other ships that will fight alongside you will do the same as they would do whatever it takes to stop zorah like binding zorah to slow it down if possible.
Now it’s a matter of spectacle at what the power of man can do when nature tries to crush humanity down. Eventually the damage zorah takes would repel it, sending it towards a different path, away from port tanzia where victory is now yours.

That "hunting group and artillery group division" concept you presented has actually already been put into practice by the Berserk Laviente fight. I haven't fought it yet, so i can't explain in details exactly how it works, but there's basically a group separated from the main hunters, in an area far away from the fight, providing support to them by using ballista, cannons, and etc. There's even an exclusive area theme for the support team, that unfortunately doesn't change as the phases progress. And sorry if i made any mistakes, not a native english speaker

i love the concepts you've come up with, mate. to quote the Huntsman: "impressive".
but let me pitch 2 things to add to that.
*1) the reason we fight him.*
the fortress (a different one from the one we know, to be clear) would be guarding a alrge supply of ores and minerals, dug out from a mine within a mountain that holds TONS of them.
remember that Gogmazios and Teostra eat gunpowder, and that the former invaded the Battlequarters for that? that's why Lao Shan Lung would attack: food; he eats ores and minerals, and that fort holds what's essentially a bouffet.
but we have to protect the supplies because they're needed for the construction of cannons, cannon balls, ballista ammo, and a Dragonator or two; because the NPCs know that they'll be facing a lot of dragons.
    *2) a breath attack.*
ever breathed out during Winter, and saw your own breath in the form of vapour? it's called "cold breath"; and that's what Lao Shan Lung's breath attack would look like.
doesn't matter if you're on the ground or on the fort's ramparts, he'll still be able to blast you.
and since Lao's one of the first monsters that grant you access to the Dragon element, the breath would inflict Dragonblight.
far-fetched? let me remind you that Fatalis' mere *bite* inflicts the status; and so does Kushala Daora's stomp in SunRise.
getting into personal reasons, *i want to TRULY like this dragon.* but without a breath attack, i can't.
but tying it with your ideas, the head swingning, biting and horn thrusts would be terrifying... if he even lets you get close.
what if he could blast you before you got close, let alone if you already are close? and more terrifying, he could target someone on the ramparts - let's say they're manning the cannon - and blast them.

    • @jacktheomnithere2127
      @jacktheomnithere2127 4 місяці тому

*addendum:* give him all the weapon types. Online has the SnS, but GU - which came out AFTER Online - didn't get it? come on! (i'm a SnS main)
and, perhaps, a different design for his armour set?
Lao's GS in GU is called "Dragonslayer", why not give the armour set a design that matches it? i don't know, something similar to the General's armour (from the Fatalis DLC), but with actual dragon scales on the coat, and a couple plates on the helmet. and make it vermilion in colour with cream parts, topped off with the cape being black with the red logo of the Hunter's Guild - like the flag in the old Lao intro.

Something I like to do a lot is try and think of variations for monsters, whether it be giving them a different status or element or cranking their power up to 11.

Greetings. My idea for Lao-Shan Lung would have some of your elements, but I would like to retain part of its essence. Is not the most engaging fight, but I love the concept of a monster that doesn't want to cause harm, but its massive size is an immediate danger to anything on its proximity, so it must be dealth with. You don't have anything against one another, but both NEED to get rid of each other to survive. This bitersweetness is beautiful to me.
I would retain the two phase concept, and add what you suggested about making very dangerous to approach Lao-Shan Lung + narrow areas (for the first phase). What I would add would be a rampage-esque siege system, where you can choose between a number of siege weaponry and tools (like reinforced gates), each one with pros and cons, both to make the first encounter more dynamic and to preserve part of The Rampage (it wasn't my favourite part of Rise, but I'm far from hating it). I would also make Lao move faster, not by increasing it's speed necessarily, but by making its steps cover more ground, so it's a bit faster. I would also make it so it breaks the siege weaponry with extreme ease, promoting the idea of Lao being very dangerous when close. Some NPCs would use weaker siege from further away like Zorah Magdaros' siege. A lot of people contributing would make it feel like the urgent situation it should be. This phase is intended to be a section where you switch between keeping at a distance from Lao and using siege weaponry to weaken Lao until it arrives to the second area. Going melee would be doable, but it would require a specific skills to do so.
The second phase would include a bigger area, where it would be a big testing ground, similar to what you suggested. Lao would've been a bit worned out, so he's a liiiittle bit less dangerous, but Lao would be almost outside the fortress and it would be focused on fighting this time around, while also try to get out of the fortress. The bad boys of siege weaponry would be in this area: Gatling guns, a dragonator, and a demolisher cannon. However, they need to be set up and Lao would specifically target hunters seting these things up, so it would be a risk/reward kind of scenario. In my scenario, I assume that the follower system would make a comeback, so followers could aid you if playing solo, whether it's fighting alongside you or using the siege weaponry. However, them fainting would count as faints for you, so it wouldn't be an easy way to have someone use the siege weaponry for you. The hunt would have a 25/30 minute time limit and if the timer reaches 0 and Lao-Shan HP is below a certain point, it would retreat, but of course it would be possible to slay it.
I would want Lao's next encounter to be some sort of tribute and showcase to the sieges and big monster fights in the Monster Hunter series. The first phase would be like the classic Lao-Shan Lung and Shen Gaoren sieges, but modernized with a little World/Rise injection to make it a bit faster and varied, while the second phase would be more reminiscent of fights like Gogmazios or Ahtal-Ka.I think it would be a nice way of modernizing the Lao-Shan Lung encounter while keeping the essence of the original concept.
Now, I also thought of Ashen Lao-Shan Lung. I saw your recent tier list and I understand putting this subspecies at the bottom. What I would make would be making it a very different experience from the normal variation. These Laos got that color because they traveled through volcanic regions, and exposure to the ash from those areas is what gave them that coloration. Volcanic regions are extremely hostile, not only because of the extreme temperature, but because some extremely powerful monsters live there. Of course, monsters like Gravios, as mighty as they are, would probably not want any beef with these creatures, but if we add creatures like Akantor, Dire Miralis, Alatreon or Crimson Fatalis to the list of potential predators for Lao-Shan Lung, combined with the harsh conditions of the volcano, and you got a more traumatized, tempered, aggressive and dangerous Lao-Shan Lung, and you probably know where I'm going with this.
Yes, I would make Ashen Lao-Shan Lung a full on fight. There would be a single area, and it wouldn't be a fortress because traveling through the volcano would make it so this creature is spotted elsewhere, meaning there wouldn't be time to set up siege weaponry and it would require some unusual solution. The main concept here is taking a little bit of the Kulve Taroth and Safi'Jiiva's sieges, in that instead of preventing Lao from advancing, we're fighting it so it retreaves little by little. It wouldn't be a DPS-check, but it wouldn't be a hunt that you can go just attacking it casually. This Lao is actually fighting and it has to be taken seriously. As far as how it would attack, I didn't think of that very specifically yet, but it would be some sort of slower Safi'Jiiva, with telegraphed, but fucking massive attacks. This would make it different from the normal Lao-Shan Lung, but not in a way that harms one or the other. Thanks for reading!

There's a lot of elements from Zorah and Kulve that can be implemented into Lao. I like where you're taking the artillery, but I DO think that Lao needs just a few fancy magical tricks to armor himself.
Have him harden either the top or bottom half depending on how much damage he takes within certain sections. That alters what damage is effective, and the kinds of tricks he pulls to trap hunters. If the bottom half is armored, the hitzones on the weak belly are protected. You can still target the legs and head, but the head has got some big bite aoes, and the legs can dig INTO the ground the generate rock obstacles that block the way. If you're inside the rock, the leg is smashing you. If you break the rock, you wear down your sharpness. If you climb the rock to jump on top of the body, Lao has successfully led you away from the belly and into friendly fire from siege weapons.
If the top is armored, certain sections will temporarily reflect projectiles, making it important to place your shots. Lao will have a mechanic or two to superarmor through the weaker stun ammos, and if he's really angry use the head to fling rocks and destroy siege equipment. Generating new armor might be copying kulve too closely, but I always felt that the boulders do more to help Lao than hinder it. Or maybe the temp armor is specific to the horn so that it's not the easiest thing to break in the fight, despite being the most valuable crafting bit and supposedly the most powerful component.
Closer to the gate, Lao starts treating you as a specific threat. Standing is done to look for siege weapons and bridges, and parry with the head or just do a super long lunge. Ground hunters can get up the tail and climb the back during this, hitting the back weakpoint and forcing it down. You can also set up some attacks that ALWAYS destroy certain components of the gate like the bridge, and interrupting is just a matter of stunning Lao afterwards, preventing hp damage to hunters, etc. I mean, you don't need a bite to break that bridge, just falling on it with Lao's neck will do the job.

It's not really one specific monster in particular, but I feel like the rampage from base rise had a lot of potential, and it'd be nice to see that covered (seeing as we're likely never seeing it in another game).
The execution left a lot to be desired, but I think the idea of taking those hunts against some massive monster where you're guarding a wall or fortress and twisting it to be a horde of monsters instead is really interesting, and it solved a lot of the problems those older hunts had. Rampage had tons of fast and aggressive monsters instead of one big and slow one, it gave better feeling of progress during a longer hunt cause each monster repelled is one step closer to winning, and the ranking system made it so that there's always something to achieve beyond the bare minimum to win (especially important in hunts like this cause the devs _really_ don't want players to lose after 20-30 minutes of the same quest).

      @emblemblade9245 Рік тому

There’s no helping Rathalos with a ground based weapon imo, but I found them both impressionable in 4U.
Pink Rathian is like Rathian that forces you to unlearn how you’ve been fighting Rathian. Its corkscrew flip and angled bite with the explosion at its mouth forced me to be way better at positioning and took no prisoners until I got good. I’m very fond of it for that learning experience.
As for Azure Rathalos, the more Rathalos uses its claws and the less it hangs around using fireballs in the air, the better. And 4U Azure loved using its claws to dive at you with tracking befitting of a bird of prey. You had to dodge at the last minute or dive evade, but it would often follow up with a fireball as you got up, so it could get hectic. Still a pain to get in and attack with a melee weapon, but dodging it was no picnic and it definitely felt interesting.
From what I understand, world tuned both of them down to the point where people find them interchangeable with the regular Raths, which is a shame.

I really wish Lao was in Rise for the Rampage, it’s such a shame that it’s not. Would have been perfect to drive them onwards, and would have been perfect to represent the Yokai Daidarabocchi (all monsters in Rise represent a Japanese Yokai or deity)

Shen goaren and Yama tuskami, dire miralis could all honesty do with this sort of treatment moving forward, I've always wanted Lao shen lung to be as cool as his art of him in battle, always had a soft spot for him and I hope one day he will get fatalis treatment

I would like to see a mechanic where he ramps up in speed if your not doing enough damage and I'd like the tunnel to look more organic it looks in the older games to man made like it was made to trap him in rather than a natural path it's running through ( also I'd like to see nergigante or something to attack randomly not everytime consistently but once in a blue moon )

I think this could be neat. As for a monster that could use some reworking, I think Monoblos could use some to give it a reason to exist alongside Diablos (as for context of the fights with it being an endangered species, maybe they're capture only?)

It got some nice moveset changes in 4U (especially white monoblos, love that thing), but it would be nice to see a bit more.
People might not like it but I think its roar should deal damage like Tigrex’s. All its entries hype up its roar as being able to split eardrums and whatnot, after all

One other fight that could be made more fun would have to be Yama Tsukami. I feel like they could definitely do something to bring him back and revamp his fight

Honestly, as only a 5th gen hunter, I have never been too much of a fan of the whole siege missions/quests. The requirement of online help and using the siege weapons for the majority of the damage just doesn't fall well for me, neither does the unique mission objectives of repel or break. So, to me, a more desirable re design of lao shan lung's fight would be to defeat it. To accompany it, the fight should be overhauled, and, for that, I imagine lao shan lung would have a ruthless and powerful fighting style, with headbutts, full body tackles and precise claw swipes and smashes, fighting almost like a human trying to crush bugs. With a special addition of roar breath attacks, sending the hunters flying to combo them with tail swipes or the aforementioned claw attacks.
I was more interested in how lao would fight. As a moving mountain, I thought "powerful" should be the word mostly going through your brain as fight the beast.

Heh this reminds me of when i dragged my poor fiancee(ex now) through 10 hours of hunting Lao on Frontier. She was not impressed nor happy with that xD The only that kept her going was how pretty the subspecies armor was. And the fact it was limited to weekend rotations.

I simply want one thing. To fight an adult lao. That alone would elevate the hunt, I feel. They can make it larger, more aggressive and maybe give it a suprise elemental attack/new abilities. It would make for some cool fanservice and strengthen the worldbuilding imo.
Tbh tho I can see capcom going the "rarespecies" route which I wouldn't be againsed.

Id like Lao to shoulder barge a wall if not being dealt enough ground damage to stagger any siege users on that side off the siege weapon.

Could you do a video like this for gypceros and cephadrome while keeping to their ecology and lore?
Gypceros is essentially kulu-ya-ku in world personality wise until he spots shiny objects and cephadrome is canonicaly strong enough to ram a diablos mid charge(the introduction to MH4) with his scales being purple or blue I'm pretty sure, becoming brown due to years of sand swimming.
Cephadrome would have a moveset similar to sharks where cephadrome and cephalos would circle you attacking independently to one another. They don't work together at all unlike the pack based raptors causing the attacks to be much less predictable making them harder since their fin attacks cause paralysis and their sprays of sand blur your vision while giving you waterblight. It also means that bringing a sonic bomb would be making the fight easier as all of them pops out the ground when using it letting you wail on them.
Gypceros would essentially use his size and weight to his advantage mainly charging you, hip checking, pecking and his posion globs being used as occasional stage hazards more then status moves. For his flashing, he only would use it as a zone transfer when almost dead, stunning you as he flies away. When you chase him further he enrages instantly and uses it in his fight to stun you while throwing his body at you with reckless abandon to attempt to flatten, run over or bludgeon you to death. And when we get to the inevitable playing dead during the quest the quest complete actually displays on the screen, but the cinematic custscene of the monster's death animation doesn't play and the slayed icon has a question mark instead of a explanation mark with his surprise attack being the strongest move out of his arsenal.

You should check out hardcore Cephadrome from Frontier, it coordinates a bit with the Cephalos. I agree, since its a drome, it should definitely coordinate with its minions to make the fight more interesting.
Now that I think about it, it’s easy to forget Cephadrome is a drome since it’s not a bird wyvern.

This may sound like a crazy idea, but what about giving Lao Shan a rampage like battle, where you don't need to focus only on him but also on other monsters as well.
And instead of needing to stop a certain amount of monsters you need to beat Lao Shan while all the chaos is going through.
Also I may be tripping, bit I think I remember a battle against Lao Shan (maybe in the dead MH online) where he was aggresive against the hunters

Give him fire ,water, and Dragon. Phase 1 he uses fire to keep Hunters away Phase 2 uses water to cool himself off because he's old making steam because his element organs are clashing Phase 3 uses dragon as hell Mary to kill Hunters before he dies.
Why give him these elements it's a dying Elder dragon? Why not make it a big epic?

Im lucky that the team for the main lines mostly dont designe Monsters in a way that you 'HAVE' to work with others to defeat them with teamwork gimmicks. Because of that i can beat still to day that monsters in older games, even with out the capability to go online with them anymore.
If we are realy need to rely an teamwork to create openings/savety for the others, to get the quest done... then the Lao fight will not become more 'Fun' when you miss the mark (like to be forced to play Solo... or only with 2 people or so...) it will turn to 'hell' or at least to annoyance.
And having restrictions like a minimum of players or specific rolls that needed to be done can lead to avoidence of this quest. For an example, at the time i picked up MHW, no one lked to hunt the Behemoth with me because of that rolls you needed to take for the Quest. I nearly needed to physikly force some of my friends to get my first expirience with that Monster and never picked it up againe because i dont wont to annoy people with quests they dont wanna enjoy. :(
