Area 9 deserves more love! My favorite Part of this Volcano Map. It's what concluded the feeling of progression, the feeling of beeing on a Journey, for me on the Map. Standing there atop of the Mountain, so close to the peak, really feeling the heat with all the flying sparks and the ardous climb behind me, yet still mining for the rare ore i came for. That's what made this video game map a place to me, an experience. I've noticed this in the video on the sunken hollow and yesterdays video as well, but Connor doesn't seem to value areas without large monster fights as much, and wishes for "more love" to be given to those areas. Now personally i think these quieter places are neccessary and a welcome addition! They are what differenciates a string of battle-zones and a genuine, lived in spot from one another I love the little quaint niches where the smaller live can thrive, plants flourish, rare ore be found. They're the perfect change of pace and a fresh breath of the quieter World they represent.

Beside the main road, where large monsters tread, there needs to be some quaint niches where little creatures can live freely and plants can flourish, rare ore be found. I love these, for they are the perfect way to deliver a fresh change of pace and a breath of the quieter World they represent. And i hope you, dear reader, can feel the same
It's funny how subjective opinions really are, this map has my least favorite run back if you faint in the nest. The back volcano zones also feel as bad as gen 2 volcano (I love both maps though)
This map always reminded me of the lava caverns from rise. i wonder if the rise developers took inspiration from this map or if it's just coincidence and it's another volcanic region that looks similar :P Overall i do like this map quite a bit but it's kinda starting to show it's age y'know?
The state of _progression_ you feel on this volcano from smoky horizon in a subtle lush landscape to cooled rock layers near a gentle water stream to eventually reaching the ACTIVE roaring summit _that can be seen at base camp_ is just fucking amazing
As someone who started off the series with 4U, seeing the Ancestral Steppe fully remastered in MHGU genuinely made me shed tears of amazement. I could not believe how beautiful it looked. (Especially Area 4, like... wow. Just...WOW...) Same with the others. But this made it feel kike a waterfall of nostalgia to me.
Agnaktors home map, automatically 10/10 (I love him so much). I think this map pretty much took what Arctic Ridge was _trying_ to do and just did it better in every way imaginable. All the action happens at the top of the map, but all the other zones aren't just straight-up useless. It also isn't quite as tedious as Arctic Ridge to actually get to the main combat zones. And said zones are much more interesting due to how they synergize with the monster's abilities, like was said in the video. I think Elder's Recess is probably my favorite "Volcano" map, but there's hardly even any competition for 2nd place in that category. 3rd Gen Volcano takes 2nd, easily. All the other Volcano maps in the series have kinda sucked in my opinion. Volcanic Hollow takes third, but a pretty distant 3rd just because I don't really like the monster distribution across its zones. They really went "Oops! All area 8!" with that map.
This track is one of my favorites for the maps. I also adore agnaktor and this suits him perfectly. Pretty much every map theme has a monster in mind its inspiration. Yeah, the lower like almost humming and the fast procession in those sections is such an awesome vibe. Yeah, I don't know what that instrument is either but I adore it. It's not as impactful as say that flute section kicking in from the classic volcano, best part of that track, but I do love it. I've said it before, I dislike how some more modern versions of maps will tone down those kinds of subtleties, with like the percussion and this would be one of the most tragic, if it lost that. I really want this map to return, I just kind of dread what they would do to the theme. Rise has me a bit jaded over some of the themes, especially the flooded forest. If this happens, for the sake of the music alone, make sure it's the main team that does it and fleshes out their old creation. The map could be improved/fleshed out more and I'd adore for them to retrofit it into a Wilds style map.
This map radiates atmosphere. First time I visited it in 3U, I was just awestruck
Agnaktor and everything around him is a solid 99.99999999% why i love this map, tbh
I freaking love Agnaktor. Screw Lagi, I want HIM back for Wilds the most.
@@Andrew-hz5zc Agnaktor is literally my favorite MonHun monster of all time and in my top 5 or top 10 (tough to deicde) on fictional THINGS ever, and is a big reason why I'm even in Monster Hunter in general (seeing him at like age 3 in the Tri size comparison is what got me to try 3Ult and eventually World, the first MonHun game I completed). Him being replaced twice in a row back to back sucks and im on my actual hands and knees begging for his return
Can't believe Volcanic Hollow was in GU, but this wasn't. I love that it connects to a shore, and I really would've liked to fight Lavasioth here. Too bad GU is essentially a 4U asset flip, but I don't understand why they added the Gen 2 volcano either.
Now we are cooking, and just right for my birthday. So first the negatives. The only real complain I ever spotted was how often monster can run out of bounds in the Lava Pools. For some thats enough to disslike the map. What it does realy well is monster placement. The Monster all fit in well not just in the volcano, but in the zones as well. The less fire based Rathalos, and the weaker G. Wroggi prefere the outside areas and often ignore the volcano until they start limping. While Volcanos are spectacular marvels of nature, many monster Hunter volcanos failed me. The first two had a fine layout, but wherent very visually interesting, the foutth gen and later where not very fun to navigate, and fight in, and visually just fine. The third gen Volcano is my personal favorite volcano. Now Im curiouse which Desert you pick for the list. MH has some realy nice options.
The pyroclast rain in area 4 and the big wall of steam created where the leva meets sea water is immaculate map design, and that's just TWO of the dozens of cool and unique things this map has going on
This isn’t my personal favorite volcano map but then again, I started with 5th gen. This rendition of the classic concept feels similar to the Lava Caverns it terms of what it has to offer. Outskirts where life clings on despite the Volcanic presence. Flowing Lava, burning Caverns and a very mountain like Volcano. Where the Volcano beats rise’s version though is how far it goes with these concepts. Yes, the Lava caverns have a claimable mountain but your never gonna reach the top. Yes, they have Volcanic caverns but most of them don’t feel like that, being flooded and consisting of much lighter almost soothing colors. Yes, they have flowing Lava but common. Just compare the two and tell me which one goes harder. I still prefer the Volcanic Hollow but in terms of taking the concept of climbing a burning mountain and running with it this map is a top athlete. It‘s also better than Dos‘s Volcano but that isn’t the highest bar to clear.
The Lava Caverns for me always felt similar to this map. If the Tri Volcano would've had underwater bits to it, I think it would look a lot more like the Lava Caverns in Rise. I feel like it SHOULD HAVE but I'm not mad that it doesn't and, thematically, it makes sense not to.
@@davidperdue7541 Rise's maps that aren't straight up FROM 3rd gen generally hold some resemblance to their predecessors. The Shrine Ruins, as another example, are thematically very similar to the Misty Peaks
Peak map.

4th gen map design is one of the absolute best. Love these maps so much
Sadly I vever playd MH game with this map but god damn. This atmosphere is sooo good . The artstyle is amaizing. Why we dont ha e something similar in Wilds ...
I prefer 4U version of the map. The golden grass is actually golden.
While I technically started playing this series in Tri on the Wii, I never made it to my first large monster due to a variety of issues - mainly not having enough time on the system for how much of a commitment this game was. So 4U on the 3DS was my first proper entry to Monster Hunter, and the Ancestral Steppe was my first map. I didn't know it returned in Generations, but I can see why - it is a very good start for the game, and one that simply brought back memories with each new zone displayed on the screen. I was unaware the verticality of the zones was something new, and just thought they were well-designed overall. The color palette I never really thought about, but it is quite easy on the eyes, and I can only imagine how good this place would be in a modern game - maybe some camps up in the higher peaks to reduce the amount of time spent climbing all of those cliffs, some more depth given to the ruined buildings/stonework of certain zones, and making more of the grassland sections a touch more interesting. For all those comments, I still cannot think of any place beyond this when 4U first comes to mind, and it is a good thing to be reminded of.
I found it weird that he started with the cover of Tri when the Ancestral Steppe decided in MH4.
Whilst I never played MH4 or MH4U, I would like to talk about the OST of the game… Since this game was the first to introduce vertically in the series, it would seem like that even the music wants to show that as well. The Ancestral Step theme to me feels like I’m ascending. The music is all big and grandiose. The Main Theme of MH4 also shows that including Dalamadur’s battle themes It wants to show you that you can fight at the highest of mountains and the deepest of valleys
When I think of this map, I think of Kecha Wacha swinging around as I grinded its armor in GU.
I...don't like this map :( I have bad memories regarding this place that I'd rather not think about...
Here, have some Christmas punch. It’ll make you feel better. It‘s very tasty( made from the best mushrooms in the Coral Highlands) and it works great as plant fertilizer too( just don’t give your tree to much of it or we might have to upgrade our HQ‘s ceiling height).
Oh yeah, Great Jaggi. Only us few W.C.H.A. members are going to understand the context here lol. ...Which is why you should join the W.C.H.A today, so your curiosity about the context for this very specific comment from Viper Zealot can be satisfied!
@@Andrew-hz5zcI don't know what in specific you're referring to with Great Jaggi but based on my own experience, it limped through holes and was really hard to follow and basically just left whenever you got to its new arena, causing a time over? I didn't quite get a time over, but it was very annoying.
7:30 Apparently in I think just 4U you could fight Chameleos on the Steppe. Found it weird this was his secondary map as opposed to say the sunken hollow, but it had a fun vibe.
This map is so great it single-handedly SELLS monsters to you. Here's my comment on Blue Yian Kut Ku's poll: "I will admit i AM biased, because Blue Yian Kut Ku was responsible for one of my most memorable moments in all of Monster Hunter. It was in 4U, Ancestral Steppe. He did that beak slam attack he has, the one that Yian Garuga is known for. The camera zoomed out, and the platform we were standing on just lowered with a screen shake effect. You know, 7 is a cliff divided across different platforms on different altitudes, and Kut Ku's beak slam triggered a cinematic cutscene of our platform sliding down. It's sorta like how Rathalos' attacks increase the inclination of his nest in the Heaven's Mount. That moment got me so positively shocked and proud at the game that could only laugh and smile for a few seconds. 5 stars" Yeah
This is my favorite map. I understand why it's at Number 7. Here's hoping it can get a remake one day. The new Windward Plains definitely feels like its spiritual successor on the visual end of things.
Before the Rotten Vale i wasn't aware that this list was supposed to be in order from best to bestest. And i think i'll stick with it beeing random in my mind. All of these maps are interesting and i'm glad Connor is talking about them, but hard-ranking them doesn't sit right with me, they're just to different
4th gen had some good maps, but then again when did 4th gen ever miss in any aspect. Ancestral step is one of my favourite first maps. It has a fun layout and some great monsters. A very pretty map too! Tho the colours do look a bit funky in some areas, the nest area at the top is especially pretty bright and desaturated. However that might be a 3ds issue cause those areas look fine in Gu.
Oh hey there lander! I see that you have a wonderful looking Christmas hat there, how festive!
Not shocked in the slightest in seeing this map on here. A really pretty map and it always looks like it would be fun to fight on. Some of the ledges however would be a nightmare to get knocked down to then climb up only for the monster to jump down.... Solid 7 out of 10
This is my number 1 ❤❤❤
I love the golden field of wheat and really wished most of the monsters would go to that zone. Like most of 4's maps it's pretty ass to get around. Especially that the main zone where you fight is in the middle of the entire map. I think my favorite moment here was getting launched into the air by a hammer user and slapping Kecha Wacha out of the sky, initiating a mount. Love the OST and the way the mountains stretch upward in the distance.
Well earned! A mountainside that’s bursting with life. You’d expect every area to look like 7 but there’s so much variety. Areas 3 and 6 could be improved for sure and I hope they are in a future game.
Another 4U map huh? I'm gonna be honest, the two chosen so far are not really my favorites from 4U. They're the two I find most annoying to traverse. Particularly this one, I groan a little bit each time I spawn at camp, because you need to go through quite a few relatively big areas usually to get to your target zone. It just takes _slightly_ too long in my opinion. This is where I think 3rd gen knocks it out of the park with its map design, and 4th gen suffers a little bit. 3U zones are wonderfully nice and compact. Traversing them is a breeze. Tundra, Flooded Forest, and the original Deserted Island (with the water shortcut at base camp), all excel at this. Sandy Plains was the main outlier. But 4U maps I feel were just a little too big for their own good. The main exception was Heaven's Mount, which is probably my favorite of 4U. 7:30 Also, correction, but Chameleos can appear on the Ancestral Steppe.
They aren’t on the level of the Desert but yeah, due to a combination of high cliffs and large zones some of the 4th gen maps can be a bit of a pain to traverse. Where they really shine though is their atmosphere and I wouldn’t say the hunting experience is bad across the board. I for one love traverseing most of them and the scenery plays a big part in that. The hollow and steppe are pretty high on my list but at the end of the day they aren’t my all time favorite 4th gen maps either. That honor goes to a pair of different environments. I have a lot of personal attachment to a lot of these locales and a lot of my favorites where created this gen but I do think most of them are genuinely great even aside from that.
There is nothing compact about 3U’s volcano or even the flooded forest imo
@@emblemblade9245 I was curious, so I actually timed how long it takes to get from base camp to certain key areas where the monster is likely to be at the start of the hunt in F. Forest, A. Steppe, 3U Volcano, and V. Hollow. I started the timer from the supply box and stopped it the moment I loaded into the zone. Here's the results: Flooded Forest area 7: 22 seconds Flooded Forest area 4: 33 seconds Flooded Forest area 2: 19 seconds Flooded Forest water shorcut: 14 seconds Volcano area 5: 33 seconds Volcano area 7: 27 seconds A Steppe area 4: 39 seconds A Steppe area 8: 35 seconds V Hollow area 8: 38 seconds (for this one I counted how long it takes to land on the ground from the jump to area 2, since you don't have control of your character while falling, so it's basically just extra loading time) Flooded Forest's and Volcano's longest travel times are shorter than the Steppe or Hollow's shortest travel times (for areas that the monster is likely to be in at the start of the quest. I'm not measuring how long it takes to get to get from camp to the furthest zone, that would be pointless). Granted, areas 2 and 3 of Steppe do have some monsters that spawn there at the start, but generally you'll be going to area 4 most in late-game. This is also true of area 2 in the Hollow. There's also something to be said about the prevalence of flying monsters in the maps that I tested. 3U generally has fewer flying monsters that can traverse multiple zones (and become REALLY annoying if you forget to paintball) in these maps than 4U does. 3U pretty much only has Rathalos for the Volcano and Rathian and Nargacuga for the F. Forest, while 4U has Rathalos, Rathian, Chameleos, Steve, Gore, etc. for the Steppe, and the Hollow has Rathalos, Steve, Teostra, and (Brute) Tigrex. It's generally far easier to follow fleeing monsters in these 3U maps, especially in F. Forest since the water and land zones are kept in their own little groups of areas. I'll give it to you that the Volcano might not exactly _feel_ very quick to traverse, since it's kind of like the Arctic Ridge where it has 3 main zones at the top of the map that you need to go through a few zones at the bottom of the map to get to. But the times that I found for the Volcano are still better than what I found for the 4U maps. So there's my argumentative essay on why 3U maps are generally better than 4U maps at being more compact and easier to traverse lol. I admit that this data might be a little biased/cherrypicked and doesn't even begin to give the full picture, but overall, when I played 3U I found its maps to be much nicer than the 4U ones in terms of travel.
This and Moga Woods are very close imo. I'm going to guess that Moga Woods is probably either 6th or 5th.
This map is fantastic at what it's trying to do, to show off the new mechanic of elevation and what they could do with it. This is one of the maps that is for maps what anjanath and doshaguma, in World and Wilds respectively, are for the monsters. I adore the visuals of this map, the beautiful fall color sceme, with all the orange leaves on the trees in the background of some zones. There are a lot of maps that have snow so having the winter feel, there's a lot of forest and jungles that can give off a spring or summer vibe, but this is the only one that feels like fall. Those trees with tons of orange leaves are beautiful. I do find it really funny that in the last 2 maps, this and the sunken hallow, that desert seltas is there without the queen. I guess they figured out that sleeping in the sand is not safe so they just flew off elsewhere. Just ditching their cruel queen that sees them only as, literal, cannon fodder.
Annoying map.
4th gen’s map design is some of the best in the series and the ancestral steppe is no different. It feels very old school monster hunter at it‘s core but taken to new heights, literally. Yes, World, Rise and what looks to be Wilds added seemless beautiful locations that have soon become iconic but if I’m gonna be honest 4th gen’s maps already looked stunning. The steppe isn’t even one of my top favorite’s from this generation but it‘s central zone leaves most of Rises maps in the dust when it comes to atmosphere. At the end of the day the updated graphics and seemless transitions only served to make Monster hunters maps even better but I’m glad to see so much 4th gen representation on this list. This collection of locales has the vast feel of adventure of most old maps while capturing some of the dynamic combat and visuals that came in full force later down the line. Some of my favorite‘s from this time still haven’t shown up and I’m hoping they too get their time in the sun.
Good map.
Idk map.
Best map.
Idk map.
Peak map.
I just hope the ancient forrest isnt top five
This and Ruined Pinnacle are the two maps I hope get remade in HD some day. Ancestral Steppe is so varied and gorgeous and has so many great combat arenas
Ruined Pinnacle would have worked really well in Rise/Sunbreak. The game took so much inspiration from GU already, and the implied verticality of the map that GU was only really able to communicate through loading zones could have been seamlessly integrated in Rise. Just imagine taking a Great Wirebug all the way up to the Valstrax nest. They probably didn't do it though because GU was so recent. If they were going to remake maps, might as well do some maps that weren't already playable on the current system.
Ruined Pinnacle would never work, the tallest part is simply too tall, it's too impractical to climb. There is water in this map and the tallest water can be a liquid in regular pressure is 10000 feet, while the highest point of the map is above all clouds near end of atmosphere which is at least 280000 feet. The fastest climb speed is about 10 feet a second, that would mean 8 hours of climbing. Let's say a wirebug of sorts is 10 times faster then us, it would still be close to an hour of climb. The only feasible way is with a teleport like in the classic series or it would be too small or way too tall. For some stuff, it's better to leave it to the imagination, else it loses it's magic
@Rankaquion I. Buddy. I don't think it's quite that serious
@Rankaquion Counterpoint: It's a video game and those real life rules you just used in argument can all be tossed out the window. Capcom can decide the pinnacle is as tall as they want. They can put water at whatever elevation they want, and nobody would likely bat an eye. They can even claim that clouds appear at a lower altitude in the Monster Hunter universe or something for whatever reason. And of course, they can just shrink the distance between certain parts of the map to make them feasible to be traveled by Great Wirebug, wingdrake, etc. Or heck, even if they COULDN'T do those things, in a worst-case scenario, they could do something like they did with Heaven's Mount and the Sanctuary in 4U. Make the highest part of the map a quest-specific area, even though it's technically geographically connected to the rest of the map. There's tons of ways they could pull of Ruined Pinnacle in a modern game.
Decent map.
Risebreak easily the best MH
It's to bad I was asleep the whole stream
I didn't expect this, but you're right. What I can add, though, is that I think what could have been better in regards to the Fight Song of the Volcanic Hollow is to pull a Raging Brachydios on the Sunken theme. When you were describing the landscape to look hellish and then mentioning how the song feels lame for slowing down and dropping the pitch, it made me think about the soundscape of Rise. Something like THAT where we hear voices singing, wailing and chanting the melody of the Sunken Hollow would give it that right balance of spice and chills without losing any of the PUNCH that the Sunken theme had. It'd sound like people trapped in the volcano calling to be saved by the player...
Capvom vould literally release this game over seas now and make a proper profit
