      Hey Shawn,
Please ask your camera operators to stop trying to be "artistic" with their angles. It's distracting.
      Thank you, sir!
BTW...I'm a disabled veteran, without combat experience, however. And I watch all of your clips; conflicted that I wasn't able to do more while I was in and at the same time glad that I didn't have to go through some of the things so many of your guests did. But somehow, I still feel a connection with all of them.

Were you ever scared? LMAO I was scared 24/7 from the day I got their untill the day I came home. Most of the time it wasn't too bad. Once we started on mission doing a recon or movement to contact it's was more intense. Once people started shooting it was like right on the edge of terror. It became easier each deployment, but it wasn't because it was any less scary. It was more like I started to get numb to it. In

Thank you for your service bro. I have a question if you don’t mind answering it. Did people on their first deployment freeze up,just panicked? I’m assuming that people did because the real thing is always different from training. I’m sure that when you have 18-20 year olds out in a war zone for the first time I’m assuming that fear and panic kicked in. I was never in the military,I played Pac-10,this was in the mid-90’s before it was PAC-12, Division One tennis and I remember my first match was against USC and there was a large crowd I was nervous as hell even though I had been playing tennis since I was 7 years old and had played in state and regional tournaments but this was completely different. I got use to it after a few matches but I was wondering if the same thing happened with soldiers.

      Right??
I still wake up some days (fewer & fewer as time matches on) with a pit in my stomach, with my first thoughts being about what is planned throughout my upcoming day (thinking of tour while I sleep I guess) -- only to have it hit me that "I'm not deployed dummy, I can do whatever I feel like today!"
I think what caused me the most uneasiness was the constant threat of IED's and VBIED's. Every single time we were out on patrol, every single step was taken cautiously & kinda nervously...and it's like my brain literally changed to accept that constant low key anxiety as the new normal
(I don't know if that was a lot of folks, or maybe I'm the odd duck?)
Contact for me, as well as a lot of guys in our platoon/company, was actually a relief!!
Truly, it was like the tension of stepping on an IED took a distant back seat & we could actually engage the enemy. It was an opportunity to thin out their numbers in our patrol zones, which meant fewer IED's.
(When the Taliban chose to engage us, they'd usually get their clocks cleaned just from the number of assets we had at our disposal. Can't imagine our rounds from our C7A2 & C8A2 rifles found their mark very often 😂 like shooting at ghosts in a way)
I don't regret for a moment going on deployment to Kandahar province in 2006 & 2010. I grew more, matured more, and started to understand a facet of our existence I think a lot of people miss out on.
I'm disgusted to the point sometimes I think my eyes get red & momentarily wet (damn allergies) when I think of what we, the west, did in the end...
We promised the local Afghans who VOLUNTEERED to be our interpreters, or some as local guides if the didn't speak any English...we promised them that in return for their help, they & their immediate families would be resettled to Canada.
11 years later, and those folks were still there because nobody in our government actually gave a s**t, and nobody took the initiative to make good on those promises.
They held up their end of the bargain. We didn't hold up ours. And it became pretty clear that after 11 years of them still being there & our government having done exactly nothing to get them out...it became clear that we never had any intention of following through on our end.
We shook their hands, lied to their faces, and 12 years later they are hiding in paralyzing terror as the Taliban, who are everywhere now, hunt them down.
It makes me feel violently angry & ill at those from our side who made those decisions. And some days I think I hate them just as much, if not more, than the 'Man Love Thursday' enemy we faced.
(Not sure how my simple reply to your comment became so damn long, sorry about that!)

It is incredible to hear the stories of our brave soldiers and what they went through and endured that most people in our country have never seen. Shawn is doing a remarkable service by talking with these veterans (being one himself) and taking the burden of silence off of them and getting their memories, some very bad, off of their chest and out in the open. Thank you Shawn for what you are doing to help support our veterans. God Bless You.

I imagine retelling a story like that can bring back every instinct and reaction to every single particle of detail, though it being an earlier experience in his tour of duty he wasn’t sure about some of the details, however the fears that he referred to is something that I never thought of before, to counting down the seconds to impact had to be terrifying, and he can probably remember the smell of that room! God bless all these soldiers and those currently on duty!

In Roman days, if I remember correctly, they would launch small rock projectiles up in the air upon there enemies in the hundreds at a time. They would literally “rain down” while at the same time make a whistling sound. Like the mortars this man described as hearing them, waiting to see if you were going to be hit was terrifying. The Romans small rock projectiles had the same effect upon there enemies. Even if you sought the shelter of your home, these things would penetrate the roofs and still get you😐 It’s a horrible situation I have to imagine to be in not knowing if your going to die or not😞

I was in Vietnam for 1 1/2 years and in one of the NDP (night defensive positions) we got mortars or rockets 7 times in 24 hours.

A few mortar rounds and everybody's freaking out, what would happen if you were up against a real army with not just mortars?

I remenber being in my truck in a storm and i could no longer see where i was going. I pulked into a left turn lane and stopoed, flashers on. I saw ac units coming off the roof of a store coming towards me and a car lot flagpole bent like a walmart childs fishing rod on a grouper! I ducked and thought "well this is about to suck"! Friggin tornado went right over my truck. Hard tonneau gone but i was unharmed. I didnt even freak a little till it was over! I watched the dashcam video later. Thats when i got scared. One year later i was driving on the same road, same area, and weather kicked up. Its florida. My ass turned aroundcand went the other damn direction! Aint playin no more!

Mortars, snipers and IEDs are imo the worst.
Too much unpredictability and luck, a gunfight is one thing, speed and skill involved to a reasonable degree, but the others? Nah

My grandad served in ww2 as a partisan movement. He told me when the germans started to mortar them they werent afraid of the ones who were whistling but the ones who didnt, beacuse they knew that they would smack near.

In the military they tend to have monogamous long-term relationships because they have financial resources to help them

I only encountered mortars twice in my time,Both in Iraq,08 the first sounded like it was belt Fed they were experienced, And if you have ever heard that screaming sound a bottle rocket makes mortars are twice as loud, Basically you just wait to see where the first Hits so you can run in the opposite
