a little blue tape on that front face of the rail before you apply epoxy prevents all that dried epoxy on the visible face of the rail. also better to use a non fast cure epoxy for adhesive. the fast cure epoxy is brittle and more likely to snap off the desk if you put repeated downward force on that rail. lots of surface area though. the trick is don't over-clamp and squeeze out all the adhesive. wouldn't be a bad idea to fillet the back edge with a bead of thickened epoxy, since a lot of the glue will get squeezed out by the clamping.

I love that you sanded down the surface of the rail before applying glue for better adhesion. We call that a Grade B surface prep at the Satellite manufacturing facility where I work at ;)

I was thinking about how to do exactly this after playing SC for a while, because I wanted to use flight sticks. I already made my desk out of construction lumber lol, so my idea was to just devise some crude "flip" platform that my sticks could attach to and be folded under when not in use. I had no idea this kind of stuff already existed, so might try it instead.

  • @spacexy0
    @spacexy0 2 роки тому +3

This is a great addition to MT product line-up. My only critic is that the sliders profile is too wide. I use the sticks without the keyboard support and I push both sticks to the same side of the desk, but because the sliders are much wider than flight sticks, I can't make them flush against each other and that eats precious space. Still a good solution, but could be much better if the sliders used both rails and were narrower.

This is the stuff I like to see!
Particularly how you solved attaching it to the desk with the glue, sanding it down and using one screw to lock the mounts, keeping the mouse extension on the left attached to the left stick mount. That was fresh to see, and shows good versatility, and shows that you can customize it to your own liking quite easily.
I would like to see a simple dead-stop or brake feature like you mentioned with the left-over bolt you had. That way you can for example, lift a little lever/button/paddle that's attached to the rail or mounts that prevents the mounts to move > then move the mounts in/out to the position you've screwed in the dead-stop / brake point where you want it to stop and it can sit tightly while remaining easy to move in and out of the way.
Mainly because constantly screwing the stops would add some unnecessary wear and tear to the metal which over time could make it a bit loose, and a brake would be much less cumbersome and finnicky to fiddle with under the desk. The swivel accessory on the chair mount could benefit from the same but with a "swivel indent" so you can screw in the swivel with the indent at "position 1", facing the "in-use" direction, then adjust the outer inden for "position 2" in the "out of the way" direction, and simply lift a brake lever and move the mounts in and out of position 1 and 2 as you please with ease.
As the rails did seem to stutter slightly as you moved them, it might be a viable solution to find some kind of small wheel baring-like piece to put on the mounts so they can slide in/out of position easier as well, to make it smoother. Smooth is fast, after all.
Another thing I was thinking was the chair-to-stick positioning. Part of the reason I went with chair-mount over desk mount was that I like to have the sticks in the same position relative to where I'm sitting, so having them on the chair seems natural to me as if it's a cockpit seat or simpit where the sticks are just there all the time, with the option to move them out of the way.
So while using the desk-mount or rail-mount, if there was a way to attach two neodymium magnets to plate or piece of metal under the WarBRD bases and a similar piece to the chair's armrests, that would allow you to "click into place" as you like it with the chair, and make the chair positioning easier with the option to move away super easily.
As for the rail-desk-mount, it seems to allow for that tighter stick axis setup while keeping it comfortable to use as a normal desk when you want, as the wobble from the chair-mount requires larger dead-zones to avoid it and with a completely still mount you can take advantage of the stability to hone in your stick precision even more, nice 👍
I'm liking the simplicity of these reviews as well man, the videography and shot-angles were well done. Easy to follow, easy to see what was going on and the overview pans were clean. 10/10, might have to consider rail mounts now.

  • @MaxskiSynths

I use a Thrustmaster T flight X or one of the same looking models i dont remember. I just cut some wood to tne shape of those bendy Vice grips so itfits to the shape of each part, then i screwed each wood piece to surround each half of the Hotas to keep it in place for forward and back moving and properly tied them down so they dont move with Zip ties, its ugly but works and my chair isnt one to be regularly moved so no shaking. I also put a small mouse pad under my wrist in case i need it when someones taking up space beside me, and on the left side a "Mount for my keyboard" like the way it looks in Elite.

This is a very cool setup.. but can you add a throttle AND the virpil left stick (with extension) AND a steering wheel setup for sim racing? That's what I want. I will build a custom desk.. no prob.. but I need a slide away for my 61 key keyboard, a second slideaway that is sturdy for mouse/keyboard area, and I need the dual throttle setup for SC and a throttle for DCS but also a shifter and ebrake and steering wheel option for sim racing stuff. Can you add/remove a steering wheel and such easy enough? I dont want to have to remove tons of stuff just to slid in a wheel. NEeds to be like hot swap easy.

That was very informative, thank you. I can see how this would be an improvement in terms of stability and stowing from the chair mounts, but I am not convinced this compares as favourably to the regular clamp-based desk mounts. stability is better with a clamp, and moving them away requires just to unclamp-slide-reclamp. so what am I missing with the rails sliding system?
I guess it is a question of having multiple things to relocate, but even then your two side extensions are light and go on a single clamp mount anyway.

I wish I could do this. I've owned my alphas for about a week now, but due to my curved desk, I've had to attach my sticks to my Aeron using flimsy monitor arms. I'm also using the warBrd bases and have yet to come up with a quick and easy dismounting solution. I wish I'd done some more research on the bases, because they don't work well with quick mounting and dismounting as the cable is hard attached to the electronics inside the base. I've done the same as you with the "umbilical cord" and I find it really annoying so I basically take everything off the chair when I'm not playing any flight simulator. All in all, I probably wouldn't have done all this had I known how much of a hassle they'd be.

They need to have a dual rail system. A single rail gives too much of a flex/pivot point when downward pressure is applied. This will eventually lead to the screws working out of the desk as well as the rail warping/bending.

They don't look like they slide super easy, like they bind up a but if the force applied is not 100% in the horizontal direction. Also that wobbly desk is sketchy af. all of that looks like it's just waiting for a random chair slide or over use of force to break something.
