I appreciate that you use the aurora in this demonstration. It REALLY shows the depth and control that can be enjoyed with the very basic ship and shows that you don't have to buy a more expensive ship to have an amazing experience.

    • @kenzoryba1017
      @kenzoryba1017 3 роки тому +20

The Aurora is actually a pretty good ship. Okay, not "pretty" but that's in the eye of the beholder. Anyway, the Aurora will take you where you want to go reliably, and is an annoying opponent, thanks to her small size as a target. And if you want to get a more dedicated fighter, they are only a couple hundered grand, that you can easily make WITH the Aurora.
No one NEEDS top spend more money than the initial 50 or so bucks to play and enjoy Star Citizen.
Also the community is always more than willing to show, or share the bigger ships, because more people means more fun.

You can do anything you want to in the game with an aurora or mustang starter pack, outside of the specialized things like ship mining, salvage, etc... I've even seen people take on ERT bounties in an aurora with the right loadout (though that will be almost impossible in 3.14, of course).
When a friend of mine decided 5 years after backing the game to finally install it and try it out a couple months ago he was super unimpressed with the Aurora and I kept telling him to stick with it and not to toss a bunch of $$ into the game on a different ship. 30 minutes later he had a constellation, lol.

Aurora is a solid ship. I finally installed SC after years of waiting and watching (and being totally disappointed by ED Odyssey...) and got the most basic Aurora package. 2 weeks of occasional gaming later I have > 1Mil credits from the Xeno threat event and am now considering what ship to buy next. It's super fun to fly circles around bigger ships in this thing and just keep strafing away.

Dual stick pilot here. It's an amazing feeling
I actually fly with my roll being on the Twist axis, and my yaw being on the X (left/Right) Axis for my right stick. Clockwise Twist rolls the ship left. I am imagining as if I had the joystick in my hand, and just straightened my elbow and held it at my side, so the top of the joystick is pointing forward
Then my Vertical Trust is on the twist axis for my Left Hand.
My left hand twisting clock-wise is "thrust-up", because in my head it makes sense as a mirror of the right hand rule used for Vector multiplication.
I grew up on flight sims, so it was an awkward transitions at first, It actually makes it easier to track targets when in 6DOF combat, since you don't NEED to bank before turning, and you have MUCH more accuracy in your X/Y axis on your joystick than you do on your twist axis

I create and export binding for Star Citizen. I support Dual Alphas, Dual T-16's, FCS HOTAS and Virpil HOTAS with an Alpha and CM3 Throttle. I also work with Subliminal to support the VKB Gladiator NXT's.
My Axis setup is a little different. I have pitch and yaw on the right stick with roll on the Z axis. I find this helps with precision aiming of fixed weapons. My Lateral movement is on the left stick with twist being the vertical thrust (collective). I use the pinky on the left as an analog space brake and the pink on the right is my mining laser throttle.

For my left stick, Doing a right Z axis turn pushes the ship up, and the left Z axis turn pushes it down. X and Y operate for thrust too. The trigger is for boosting on the left stick.

About to order my VPC alphas tomorrow with the Z-adapter
What seems natural to me is
    Right Stick:
    X-Axis roll
    Y-Axis pitch
    Z-Axis strafe
    Left Stick
    X-Axis yaw
    Y-Axis thrust
    Z-Axis vertical thrust
With the Z adapter twisting up will make you vertically move up. All of your strafing movements are bound to Z-Axis. Yaw on left stick X-Axis has always been my go to in battlefield and Elite on Xbox controllers and it just seems natural for it to carry over. Having it on a twist movement when you have so many joystick axis seems counter intuitive and seeing it mapped that way in game confirms my personal bias haha. Really can’t wait to get this mounted on my chair and get my hands on it.

I think this is by far the best demonstration and explanation of HOSAS flight, seeing your widgets was a great addition to showing what your doing with inputs. Its definately helped me decide on trying the HOSAS setup as I'm currently on a HOTAS with a Virpil Constellation with a Saitek X55 throttle. I've been considering getting the Virpil Throttle but have been very curious of the HOSAS setup and if I'm spending the money on a second Virpil, I don't want to buy one just to later switch to the other. It's definitely not the case that everyone has the right stick set up that way - I know a bunch of people, myself included, have yaw on the X-axis rather than roll, usually with roll on the twist axis in that case. Coming from atmospheric flight sims it took a while to get used to, but now I find it much easier to point my crosshair by essentially moving it up, down, left or right with the pitch/yaw joystick, and out in space roll is much less important so having it on a less easy axis isn't a problem. Interesting video and beautiful flying, though, thanks! I really should practice in decoupled mode more.

I have a right hand alpha and v2 throttle, my left hand alpha and rudder pedal set just shipped yesterday after a 1 week waiting period. I HAD been using a t16k for left stick, so I had to order another base plate for my monstertech desk mounts. A little galling to pay $41 shipping for a $38.5 item, but it is what it is. I'm excited, in 2 weeks or so I'll have my setup!
Also, the pit landings are more difficult when you have a ship that barely fits in the hole they want you to park in. Carrack, C2, Cat, are a little more difficult. IMO CIG screwed the pooch on hangars by not either doing it like ED with a landing pad that takes your ship down, or by simply having all hangars being huge like they were back when the hangar modules first released. Use all overly large hangars and you'll likely never have to redo them. Use smaller hangars and the likelihood of having to rework them is much higher.

You could look at using the Virpil sitck with the extra analog stick on the stick and rudder pedals for yaw/strafe. I use my rudder pedals for yaw/strafe (yaw standard, left pedal left strafe, right pedal right strafe) which just leaves vertical/linear strafe for the small stick on a Virpil Alpha. I play SC fully on an xbox controller; flying, driving and even boots on the ground. Yes, I'm that guy... Nevertheless this is actually the first time I started thinking about buying a pair. If you got some sort of link to a market place that gives you profit when used (or an order code) let me know, you've earned it (: This was a great video!

    Personally i use a HOTAS : T16000 + WCS and Rudder.
Using the little joystick on the WCS for translations up/down and right/left, rudder for yaw, and T16 for pitch/roll, z axis used when on foot or in EVA mode for yaw, rudder 2nd function used for walk and run forward/backward.

I feel that changing the right stick in a manner that it controls the direction the vessel is facing, with the twist being the roll axis, would be more suitable until you can add pedals to the mix.

This video is amazing! I am brand new to this game haven't even logged in yet into the live, just trying out free flight and different combinations. The first time ever now I understand the physics of the flying and a good base setup. I really would like to see a button to button video also, since I have ordered a Constallation too only the right side so far and probably will use the older warthog on the left side or a hotas config or 3 units. I played before mostly FS2020 and 2024 as flying sims.

A wonderful video! I feel as though this should be the second stage of learning decoupled. I got the logic in space quickly where it can be useful for combat, but did not quite realize that it is so "hover" based in atmo. Can't wait to try it!
Nice work with the widgets and your setup. It is worth pointing out that Virpil is not "the" only answer; you can achieve this with VKB just as well, or with a right-hand Winwing with a twist module. And arguably on the left stick Thrustmaster does a good enough job since the centre-detent is not an issue (even an advantage for thruster separation). Worth pointing it all out so you don't sound like a commercial! Unless you have to? ;)

    Personally, I use…
    Right joystick:
    - left/right = yaw axis (better aiming combine with pitch)
    - up/down = pitch
    - twist = roll
    Left joystick:
    - left/right = strafe left/right
    - up/down = strafe up/down (better precision for fly by just above the ground)
    - twist = strafe front/back (a bit like a motorcycle?)

I just wanted to say a big thank you for explaining this at such detail. I've been contemplating on what setup to get for SC and was torn between many things: was I going to stick with with mouse and keyboard (having clocked many hours of Arma with that setup got me pretty decent at flying heli's with WASD+arrow keys) or was I going for a HOTAS (which makes sense to me with previous games I played with that classic setup) or was I going for a controller (having played console games on a regular basis for over 2 decades) or going for HOSAS (which makes the most sense when I look at space sims) whereas I always lacked an axis when I tried to visualize that setup, but seeing how you've bound it to that brake lever it just hit me!
Still will probably go for a controller in the meantime (since I have those lying around) or going for a HOTAS (which I have somewhere, but it clutters up my desk, so I only install it when I know I can play multiple session within a short period of time), but this HOSAS and especially with the Virpils has been added to my wishlist! A man can dream :P
Once again, thanks for this detailed dive into your setup

I have dual alpha primes with the left on the Z extension, so I did the up and down strafe on it's Z-axis. I TRIED for months (not weeks) to get the sliders to work but they don't. I tried to set them as button press and that wouldn't work either because my left stick's slider triggers for no reason and VPC deadzone didn't work at all. I have to go a different route anyway because star citizen would keep seeing my two identical bases as the same, even though I am correctly setup in VPC's software. I had to use hidhide, vjoy and gremlin to get mine to work best for me, but that means I have a 6 axis limit with one vjoy. 2 causes me other issues I just rather not deal with anymore,,, for now. I can't wait until I can manuever as smoothly as you. I played for so long with keyboard and mouse, it's just hard to dedicate practice time for it, but I must. I go back and forth. I had deadzone issues where if I touched the mouse, after the stick, it would be locked out, but setting deadzones in star citizen itself has made most of my issues a thing of the past.

  • @Arkalius80
    @Arkalius80 3 роки тому

Some things I think the game needs, especially after watching this...
Something in between coupled and decoupled mode that can be used in gravity wells that lets the ship operate as if it is in decoupled mode, but automatically applies enough thrust to keep you from falling... that would be neat
An autopilot mode to maintain pitch that can be used near planets so you can feel comfortable leaving you chair while flying near a planet knowing you won't be slowly changing angle or anything.
I'd love to get a virpil setup but I'm kind of torn... Twin stick does seem optimal but I also really like HOTAS for things other than SC and E:D etc. I know some people have done dual stick plus a throttle, but that gets pretty expensive and possibly unwieldy to set up depending on your gaming space.

    • @AshU-ug2fy

Maybe give an "Engineer" mode for those tech heads who like to tweak the ships to get full control and manage it exactly the way they want. If anyone else were to steal it and fly it they would probably crash because they wouldn't understand what is going on. This would allow pilots to personalize exactly how the ship flies for THEIR needs.

Nice rig you have there!! I use the Thrustmaster Warthog stick and throttle and I love them. Solid steel is the way to go. I also use a VKB T-Rudder MKIV which is also all steel construction. I round it all off with the Obutto tubular steel cockpit. Star Citizen is such a dream to fly when you are in the proper seating position. Get a good cockpit, mine is designed for sim racing, but works excellent with flight sims also. It also has a mouse and keyboard mount that can sit above your lap making it easy to switch back and forth between air and ground controls.

I recently got a VKB Gladiator after my t16k stick died a noble death. i have been struggling with the TWCS throttle and VKB setup in space sims and was considering getting a 2nd Gladiator with the Omni-Throttle adapter (putting the left stick at a near right-angle).

Nice. I didn't transition to the dual sticks until after I upgraded to the titan. In fact, I had rented a Cutlass Black when I did and I love the flight model of that ship a lot.
The titan actually pitches the nose quite a bit up when you take off, I'll have to try decoupled mode more, I often use it in combat. I had some issues with cruise control being easily set on my Orbweaver and didn't realize that it was on. Confused the hell out of me as there is no indicator for it, which seems odd.
One thing about the Elite flight model that I love is if you use a strafe axis for up and down, left and right, if you reduce the throttle you will put more power to the strafe axis. This makes for some very satisfying flying and great fun when landing at outposts. It's also very nice in combat. I have never really gotten the hang of FA off though, I just haven't done enough combat and I get frustrated pretty quickly.
I enjoy both of the Elite and Star Citizen flight models.

I have both the dual sticks, throttle and Rutter pedals honestly.
      - Throttle I have a warthog, I use one the throttles handles to change the speed limiter. And the other one is forward thrust (I use it outside of combat when I want to set up a cruise speed for confort.) I don't use it much in combat but it's very nice in non combat situations. Plus it gives you extra buttons for non combat stuff like landing gear, lights, V-tol etc...)
      - Both joystick I use for dogfighting right joystick I have pitch, roll. Left I have Straff and also setted up forward/backward straff on the Z axis to control my speed In combat. Along with assigning all combat and flight related essentials (missile operator mode, scan, guns, targeting, powe management).
      - Rutter pedals: I use them like an helicopter. So for UP/DOWN thrusters and for Yaw. I prefer to do it this way because of my helicopter flight experience and I find it less tiring to use yaw on the pedals.
But you can also put staff UP/Down, yawn on the joysticks. And use the pedal just for straff forward/back. Which is more natural for some people (like a car). That the most common way people use them in space sim. But not the way they are used in flight Sims. So it's a choice between realism or something that is easier to learn.
Point being, two sticks in a space sim is a must IMO. But that doesn't mean not adding a hotas and even Rutter pedals doesn't improve the experience. I definitely does, It use them all the time.
But if you are on a tight budget, have two joysticks with X-Y-Z axis is enough to fully control the ship.
