You have shown me EXACTLY what I need to do to salvage an otherwise great jacket, AND you have done so in a simple yet excellent teaching video. It is so very refreshing to see a How To video that shows clearly what is being done. The close-in shots, all in excellent focus with your clear explanations conspire to create an excellent teaching tool. I sense that you are a natural teacher. Thanks
Pure gold. Not just the "how" but the "why" as well. My local clothes repair shop wanted $70 to replace the zipper on my winter coat. After buying super glue...you saved me $62. : )
Amazing!! I work for a volunteer organization that mends clothing items for folks who can’t afford to pay high priced tailoring. It is winter now in MN and zipper repair is in demand. I may just “harvest” several plastic teeth and have them ready to go. Great problem solving!! Great, detailed video. Bookmarking for future viewing. Thank you!
Thanks so much for posting this video. I had a missing tooth on a boat canopy -- a huge canopy on a 40 foot boat. This saved me taking down the entire bimini (canopy) and replacing a zipper about 10 feet long. Thanks.
I had two teeth missing that were right next to each other, on the same side of the zipper. I used 100 grit sandpaper to enlarge the opening of the replacement teeth. The zipper now works good as new. After installing the replacement teeth your technique of using the zipper slider up & down to position the replacement teeth B4 adding Super Glue did the trick. The real TRICK is finding replacement teeth the right size. Again, your suggestion to remove teeth from a pocket zipper provided the replacement teeth I needed. YES. I've SAVED this video for future use. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
I love how you explain EV ER Y THIIING. ☺ It helps me to understand how it works, why it works, why it doesn't work and gets my brain wrapped around the whole thing so that I can troubleshoot this and possibly other things similar. Thank you!
This video was fantastic! You're a great teacher. I love how you explain and model how a plastic zipper tooth grips onto the cord; something that I had no clue about. I was able to watch your video and repair my own broken zipper instead of having to sew a whole new zipper into my winter coat. This was a real time-saver! Thank you so much!
Thank you SO Much for this video! i've been a sewist for 50 years, but have always avoided replacing jacket zippers. but my favorite jacket lost one of the molded teeth and i was set to order a new molded separating zipper and trying to replace it when i found your video. this was EXACTLY what i needed!!!! you make the process very understandable, and i love the details of each step. i'm definitely going to try replacing the missing tooth now rather than trying to replace the whole zipper. thanks so much!
You my friend are a national treasure. 2 additions! A. Have a second person hold the zipper portion to be repaired Taut. (Tight) B. And Rc tire glue (super glue black with flex). Wife held it tight, I pushed on and glued bridging 3 teeth. Fixed a new jacket for 6yr old! Thank you!!
Excellent! This video represents what I love about UA-cam. Useful info and mending to help reduce waste! I cringe to think of the amount of people in the world who would toss clothing because of a broken zipper. So glad you repaired yours! It wasn't the zipper repair info I was looking for specifically, but definitely useful to know in future. I've added this to my repair/mend board on Pinterest. Thanks! :)
super super helpful! I didn’t know why I wasn’t able to get the teeth off the zipper. I’m working with. I didn’t know about coil zippers. Your demonstrations were super helpful!
This is excellent stuff. Thank you for your very clearly explained and macro zoom video. I've always felt it was such a waste throwing away a jacket because of its broken zipper. Your knowledge shared is landfill-saving. Outstanding! :-)
Thank you for the instructions. I took a tooth from the top of the zip and glued it into a gap in the bottom section. I am now officially a zip dentist :-)
Great video thanks. I have two further hints: 1. Take nearest tooth from where slider is when zip is shut. Sew the resulting space over and over forming a fake tooth. This will stop the slider from coming off so the zip can still be used, albeit stopping a little short of where it used to. 2. Use a small pair of sharp scissors (like manicure scissors) instead of a knife, it is easier. Hope you find them of use.
Just the kind of person you don't want looking over your shoulder when you've got a tight emergency on your hands and there's no precedent for a solution. I've always wanted how do you stop the noise without taking your eyes off the prize?
U are AMAZING ! Great camera work and instruction, I really am grateful for you taking the time to do this video. I just got a $30.-$40. est. (that I declined) to replace a zipper on a piece of luggage. Can't wait to conquer it myself. Thank-you
As soon as i saw the title of replacing the teeth which is something i had never heard of before i had to watch it. A big fat like and subscribe for you as this is one of the best and most original repair videos i have seen in a long time.I have exactly this issue and an old jacket that i can scavenge teeth from so we will see how it goes. Thank you.
I never would have thought that a zippers individual teeth could be replaced! I have put patches on my jean pants using "Titebond 2" wood glue and these jean pants have been through my laundry dozens of times and the patches are still there as the day I glued them on, so this glue may work here too. Thanks for teaching me a new skill! Karl
With a damaged first link on a coil zipper, I was able to simply clip out the the bad coil and the zipper now works fine. Your video instructions were very helpful.
thanks a million...had a north face puff vest missing a tooth and zipper for almost two years now ....watching your video, I was able to finally fix it....THANKS!!!!
Thank you so much .. for these great, Detailed tips. This is SUPER Informative & Helpful..... Great camera angles to show specific Details...... 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Great video really appreciate you attention to detail in it. I had more problems with removing fabric from the tooth as the plastic teeth were very brittle. Consequently, I took more time harvesting and rushed the super glue part with a tooth pick (to much glue) but I wiped the excess and ran the zipper up and down to flake away the excess. Again, thank you for showing us all how to fix things instead of the throw away consumerism we are being driven towards.
Thank you for the tip! I was able to find a donor tooth from another jacket and was able to fix a brand new winter coat, saved myself $32.00. I suggest applying glue on teeth on each side of the repaired one, just to bridge the connection.
👍OMG Sir! Thank you. 🙏💝 I watched the whole video & I don’t even have a zipper to repair but boy o’ boy when I do…I’ll be ready. 💡This video even gave me insight into paying closer attention to the types of zippers that are in the clothing items I purchase going forward.
I wish I knew this when my kid was small. I've tossed several coats, pants, etc. because repair costs would exceed replacement, and replacing the whole zipper would have been too big a job. Now I'm the smart Grandma!! The construction explanation was super!!
Great video! I was about to throw an expensive body warmer before checking UA-cam to find your video. I'll be doing the repair to 5 teeth the Dog bit off tomorrow. Thank you!
I am positive that you are a genius! I just discovered a missing tooth in a beloved pink hoodie jacket & others on the internet say it can’t be repaired & to replace the zipper. No! I’m going to use my handy lit magnifying lens on a swingarm and follow your advice. Thank you!
What an awesome video. You did a wonderful job on the repair and a wonderful job showing us how to do it. Thank you very much for your well thought out and shot tutorial. Grateful to you, Sincerely Dave
I had to fix my jacket zipper missing a tooth and this/your video was very helpful. I followed your instructions to a T and was able to replace the missing tooth and now my zipper is back to working well on my expensive jacket. Thanks a million. MLK
This is an excellent video! I appreciate the detail and patience you exhibit. I searched YT for a video just like this to repair my favorite jacket. Saw a couple of others, but yours was outstanding! You earned a new subscriber here. I'm shocked you have only 8K subscribers. Put up more content and you'll eclipse 100K! Thanks!!!
Be sure to use waterproof super glue. I used Zap-A-Gap which is used for tying flies. A lot of super glues are NOT waterproof! This video saved me from trashing a nice Cabela's jacket, my dog chewed two zipper teeth off! Thanks for the instruction.
K I just fixed two of the teeth on my jacket and it works great-it took a while and some fiddling with the teeth but I'm happy with the results! The only thing I did different is that I used E6000 instead of Super Glue cause I personally don't like the stuff
I read ALL the comments, in search of the durability of the repair. If it won't hold up when laundered or dry cleaned then it is just a temporary fix. Could someone who has done this process please comment on how the repairs held up? I did find one person who mentioned using a waterproof glue. I have replaced a few zippers in my day and believe me, this method is far more tempting than a total replacement. Thank you for this ray of hope! And at first I too thought the video was long, but then I realized it is necessary to be descriptive when some people don't have enough experience with zippers.
4 mins into your video and I discovered that my zipper on my widbreaker has as plastic zipper that is wrapped around the fabric that is has partly detached from, not only that but the teeth look like their missing but actually they have only just been stretched away or spaced away from the others creating the missing teeth appearance(much like a stretched out slinky lol If your a kid from the 80s or not you know what that is! ) now I just need to figure out how to gather the plastic together and sew back onto fabric strip..if not replacing the zipper is other option for me. Thank you tor posting such a clear concise video with step by step instructions..very well received! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Subscribed & liked!
Huge thank you, I really thought I was going to have to pay a lot of dough to fix my bike jacket.. This has saved me so much..I needed to replace about a dozen and once in the routine.. Rattled right through them, again thank you so much
Thank you so much for this great how-to video. Very easy to follow. Just installed 4 missing teeth from pocket zippers to the main jacket zipper! Took a long time though because the donor teeth kept snapping out of the pliers, lol
You are a genius, never thought of it. I have probably thrown out some of my good jackets due to worn out zippers. Thank you so much and you have explained it very meticulously.
I have to say a big thank you! I’ve just fixed my Gorilla robe following your tutorial with a £2.50 donor zip from eBay. Amazed and chuffed. THANK YOU!
Fantastic video! I've watched 1000's of videos and never left a comment, but after watching yours I just had to. Everything was made at ease for the viewer, clear sound, great picture and put up nice and close. I didn't even have to do a repair, it was just something I was curious about (I'm a geek). I just wanted a quick glimpse into what needed to be done, but the video was done so professionally that I couldn't press stop...I wanted to know more. I applaud you!
Thanks, I have 10yr old jacket that I don’t have the heart to throw out because it fits me so perfectly. I lost 2 teeth a couple years ago but never bothered to put a new zipper on and just bought a new jacket. When I do wear it sometimes I don’t have a problem but sometimes I’m yanking at the zipper just to get my coat off. I will definitely be trying this. 👍🏻👍🏻
Wood glue is PVA so won’t bond to the plastic. Great video though, I am going to try this with metal teeth. I have a donor zip so I think it might be easier.
Well, well. I learned about tooth zippers and spiral zippers! Great help to me! I didn’t have a tooth zipper I have a spiral plastic zipper on my suitcase. When I got home from traveling, I couldn’t open up my suit case because the corner was hit hard and caused the zipper to come apart. After watching this video I was able to distinguish between the 2 types of zippers. Now, I was able to figure out HOW to fix my accordion zipper. First, it was detached from the other side, then, I notice it was also detached from the material holding the spiral in a perfect spiral distance. After, looking at it closer , I got a needle and thick thread and perfectly sewed the alignment distance of the spiral in place by matching the distance using the other side. Then , I had to carefully zip a small distance, then go in reverse. I did this about four times while using pointed pliers with a small square edge to help me close the open end while I zipped. Voula! Done! I saved my 30 year Bill Blas perfect size, holds a lot, luggage! Yippee 🥳
I'm so glad I found this video! My winter jacket zipper got stuck at work and a coworker tried to help. He ended up sliding the zipper off its track AND breaking 4 or 5 teeth off it. I was angry until I found out how easy it is to repair. I'm going to try to fix it this week and I'll post how it went. Oh, one more thing: do you have a video on how to get a zipper back on track? Thanks!
Phew, it took me an hour to get the tooth back on the cord. My arm is aching from gripping small implements, but many thanks, I might have thrown my small daughter's coat away if I hadn't found this video. It had a deformed tooth that it was completely jammed on. I cut that one out (cutting through the plastic to not damage the cord) and cut a replacement from the top of the zip. I widened the tooth hole with sandpaper, and eventually managed to push the cord in with the tip of a craft knife.
My situation was much more complicated because bigger zipper for rougher material and all, and quite painful on fingers at the end. But thanks man 👍🙌 you had good tips on how to remove teeth from other zipper and also putting them back on
Very well explained, good macro photography. Great resource to avoid trashing a perfectly good jacket. The video was perfect, both in length and detail. All those who commented about the length, you are like those who won’t read books because they are too long, and want the Cliff Notes versions. To each his own. There is always the fast forward option if you don’t have the patience. Quit trashing those who take effort in doing a good job. Why don’t you make your own high-speed videos of repairing zippers?
The little Lego guys were surprisingly cool about the whole thing. We had a waiver for them to sign, but since they don't have thumbs, we did a verbal agreement that they get their hands back, and some of those little snap-on beards for their trouble.
Wow this might be the most informative DIY video I've ever seen. You saved my $350 Carhartt jacket that Carhartt themselves wouldn't or couldnt fix. Were those Lego arms you were using as zipper teeth on the straw when you were explaining? Haha GREAT!
11-29-2018 Thanks for the video it helped a lot took a tooth from the pocket zipper, put it in place of the missing tooth, VERY COOL saved me a lot of money
If you use a thin grade of Cyanoacrylate (super) glue (used by model makers) you can put it directly on the tooth before placing on the bead and adjust for spacing etc. It won't bond until you hit it with the activator and will give a far stronger grip and quicker set then regular superglue.
I love this and I’m now working on a couple repairs! Would you have any more tricks on how to clean the fabric out of the removed teeth? I keep breaking the teeth I've worked so hard to remove!!!
Great video, thank you! I've just managed to replace 3 teeth on my North Face jacket and it seems to work. I used a donor zipper. It was not that easy like in the video but it was fun to repair. :-)
I cannot wait to try this on a fortnight book bag. Beautiful condition but missing one tooth. Certainly worth a try. Thank you for your instructions. New to your channel so I am anxious to see what else you have to say :-)
@@chasebyrd2853 I haven't gotten to it yet. I was supposed to this past week. I will get to it, and I will let you know if it was succesful. Having to a buy a whole top for a couple of broken zipper teeth is not worth it... Yet lol
No I want to thank you for showing this to us cuz I do have a couple of jackets that are very expensive and I'm going to try this thank you very much I appreciate it by the way very well done
thanks alot I did it it took me time but I did it and yes it was metal, I inserted the Toth and is little bit stuck but it does work thanks a lot the explanation of how the zipper works helped me :-D
Thank you for the video. I just liked. What to do if you don't have any extra zipper teeth. Can you use a piece of the plastic from a Q tip ? or do you have other suggestion please. My small parrot bird ate 6 of the teeth of my cardigan.
What an exellent extensive detailed video thank you very much. My wife came to me with a long pair of boots with broken zips it was goning to cost $80.00 each to fix them not worth it ,I said biff them to the ribbish dump LOL. Of course she couldnt?? she has keept them soooo I will have a go at them with style and see if it will hold. Do you think it will work on a pair of boots? It is only at the top of boots. Thank you once again. Excellent.
You have shown me EXACTLY what I need to do to salvage an otherwise great jacket, AND you have done so in a simple yet excellent teaching video.
Rita: This has preserved my pants and my privacy without my concupiscence being a public presence in the workplace professional situation.
Thank you!!
What a superb video! You are an excellent teacher and make everything crystal clear. Thank you!

super super helpful! I didn’t know why I wasn’t able to get the teeth off the zipper. I’m working with. I didn’t know about coil zippers. Your demonstrations were super helpful!
Huge thanks for this. 15 minutes of work thanks to your video, saved the cost and inconvenience of a repair / replacement 👍🏽
Fabulous instructions! I loved how simple and exact you explained the process. Thank you!
You just saved a $300 jacket. Well, not yet, now I have to do it! Thank you.
Great video thanks. I have two further hints:

Amazing !
i wish others will learn from you how to make an instruction video.
Excellent; thanks for the extensive detail. Most UA-cam how-tos don't include nearly enough detail.
With a damaged first link on a coil zipper, I was able to simply clip out the the bad coil and the zipper now works fine. Your video instructions were very helpful.

Cannot find a replacement zipper on a fave shirt, so this video you have made is extremely helpful. Much thanks from The Philippines.🇵🇭

Fantastic ... Your precised & detailed explanation is helpful to learn the operation of a zipper & how to fix it ... Thanks a lot ...
Thank you so much for this great how-to video. Very easy to follow. Just installed 4 missing teeth from pocket zippers to the main jacket zipper! Took a long time though because the donor teeth kept snapping out of the pliers, lol

That’s a fantastic video. Hoping I can fix my friend’s much loved coat which has zipper teeth and slider missing.
Thankyou for such a detailed, thorough & resourceful video....supremely excellent
I like how you showed finished repairs before showing how to do it.
Great video, saved my 200 dollar jacket! Very easy to follow and understand. Thank you for the lesson!

Well, well. I learned about tooth zippers and spiral zippers! Great help to me! I didn’t have a tooth zipper I have a spiral plastic zipper on my suitcase. I widened the tooth hole with sandpaper, and eventually managed to push the cord in with the tip of a craft knife.
My situation was much more complicated because bigger zipper for rougher material and all, and quite painful on fingers at the end. But thanks man 👍🙌 you had good tips on how to remove teeth from other zipper and also putting them back on
Wow - great zipper surgery! Thank you for the helpful video.
I'm trying this on my favorite cosmetic bag. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thank you!
DDDD: 3:31 How many Lego humans had to die and be dismembered to pieces to use their poor little hands as representation of a zipper tooth DDD':
The little Lego guys were surprisingly cool about the whole thing. We had a waiver for them to sign, but since they don't have thumbs, we did a verbal agreement that they get their hands back, and some of those little snap-on beards for their trouble.
The nice thing is about describing fully in detail...thank you
Love the blooper at the end!!!! I always do that with superglue!!!
I agree with you, educational & funny 😁
You are a life saver. Fantastic tutorial.
Very useful video. It's a fiddly thing to do, but replacing a whole zipper can be far more involved.
Wow this might be the most informative DIY video I've ever seen. You saved my $350 Carhartt jacket that Carhartt themselves wouldn't or couldnt fix. Were those Lego arms you were using as zipper teeth on the straw when you were explaining? Haha GREAT!
You explain this very well good teaching off to try to find a tooth for my wetsuit very large nylon teeth I hope this works 1 is missing
11-29-2018 Thanks for the video it helped a lot took a tooth from the pocket zipper, put it in place of the missing tooth, VERY COOL saved me a lot of money
Fantastic!!! thanks a bunch mate! now I can fix my tent zipper!!
Brilliant way of teaching. Thanks. Allah bless you.
Thank u for the detailed demo! It’s exactly what I needed!
Maybe 20m is too long for an engineer but not for me. The explanation was detailed - excellent.
Thank you for the video. VERY useful. Couldn't find the right zipper in Romania (YKK Vislon 5VS).
Great step by step tutorial thanks so much. Thumbs up.
If you use a thin grade of Cyanoacrylate (super) glue (used by model makers) you can put it directly on the tooth before placing on the bead and adjust for spacing etc. It won't bond until you hit it with the activator and will give a far stronger grip and quicker set then regular superglue.
Does that process hold up to washing and or dry cleaning?
That's all great, but what about a suitcase zipper, the ones you showed at the beginning; metal or smaller teeth please?
This is incredible! Awesome awesome awesome! I have a jeep top to fix!
How did it go with the jeep top? I am going to try to replace a broken tooth on my jeep top!
@@chasebyrd2853 I haven't gotten to it yet. I was supposed to this past week. I will get to it, and I will let you know if it was succesful.
Having to a buy a whole top for a couple of broken zipper teeth is not worth it... Yet lol
@@chrystianrodriquez my thoughts exactly!
Very good video and walkthrough thank you for spending the time to make it. 10/10
LEGO ARMS!! I loved ripping those out back on the day lol 😆
Absolutely outstanding!
Genius! Very well done!
Mister, you rock! you saved my $200.00 North Face jacket.
Great produced video. Thanks so much for your help.
SUPER VIDEO and will try it right now!!
Usefull! In addition I can tell a locking kelly clamp helps grabbing the tooth without launching it over and over again... don't ask how I know
Thank you for the video. I just liked. What to do if you don't have any extra zipper teeth. Can you use a piece of the plastic from a Q tip ? or do you have other suggestion please. My small parrot bird ate 6 of the teeth of my cardigan.
Very good video. I appreciate. You saved my day
What an exellent extensive detailed video thank you very much.
Excellent.
