Glass Mugs in the Cricut Mug Press: Will they break the press?

  • Today I am testing glass mugs in the Cricut Mug Press. Will the mug press break if I use glass mugs? I am pressing a bunch of glass sublimation blanks to see if I can break the press. I have seen a few videos on UA-cam of the Cricut Mug Press giving an error after pressing glass mugs. Plus I have had some readers have the same issue. So, I am giving it a try in my Mug Press from Cricut to see if I can break it. Will these glass coffee mugs break the mug press? Let's find out!

    Hi, thanks so much for this video! I wanted to let you guys know something about the glass mugs. The problem with the Beer Stein was most likely temperature shock. The trick is going to be to pre-warm the mugs before putting them into the press because the glass is temperature sensitive. If any part of the glass is colder it will crack as the rest of the mug heats up. The heat causes the glass to slightly expand, and it shrinks when cold so if the entire mug isn’t heated evenly it can cause a fracture where the cold meets the hot.

      I’m a glass blower by trade so I know a little bit about glass. These glass mugs are most likely made of cast soft glass which is much more susceptible to temperature shock, but if you have the opportunity to buy borosilicate glass or mugs this won’t be an issue. Borosilicate is built to withstand the heat, and it’s also more likely to be consistent thickness and straightness because it’s made using a scientific glass tube which has a very consistent wall of glass.

    You are always so very "spot on" with what we need to learn. My theory about the folks who broke their Cricut Mug Press is that they're probably treating it as if it was a commercial machine. It's doubtful that they used an external timer and expected the mug press timer to "do its job" with rapid succession of glass mugs.

I just use my timer on my phone as well and it always works fine....green light stays on ...I just don't get the timer all the time. I wonder if It has anything to do with the temperature of the blank rather than the type of blank itself.

    Hi Angie!
    What a great and informative video as always! Thanks for doing all of that testing.
    An idea, after watching another of your videos, came to me that may help solve the "wavy walls" issue on those glass mugs and perhaps keep the mug press timer from stalling. What about using the thinnest one of the ? Do you think that would help? Wouldn't that create enough pressure to offset the "wavy walls" issue?
    Thanks again!

    I have a theory.
    I'm pretty sure the glass doesn't dissipate the heat as well as the ceramic, and the thermistor (basically the component that reads the temperature) gets overloaded and stops.
    It's just a theory but based on the fact that you can let the press cool and then use it again normally tells me that it's just an overloaded thermistor.
    I might be wrong, of course.

    • @AngieHolden
      @AngieHolden  2 роки тому +1

      I would say that is a good theory. I don't know why some people's presses are getting an error that won't clear however. I just wish I could replicate a broken press!

    • @vincentferrari
      @vincentferrari 2 роки тому +3

      @@AngieHolden could just be variations in components? And maybe some thermistors are more tolerant of overload than others. I’d love to get my hands on a broken one to see if I could fix it with a replacement part.

    I suspect it has to do with the beer Stein having to be upside down. There's no place for the heated air within to go and pressure would increase. Regular mugs have the opening up allowing some of the heat to escape.

    I’ve watched all of your mug press videos hoping that you’d show pressing a 20 ounce skinny tumbler. As far as I can see you didn’t. So, If I want to press a skinny tumbler would it be ok to press it right side up and then turn it upside down and press it again?

    So, I looked through the comments to see if anyone said this before I did... but I'm wondering if the glass broke because of the amount of pressure you have to put on it to get it to lock in? I noticed you had to press really hard, like as if it was just slightly too wide. I've never seen anyone have to press that hard. Were your other steins the exact same width? I just feel like that amount of pressure with the extreme temperature would crack it.
