Its not a normal cam sensor. Its a pick up coil. Rarely fail in a jeep. If it does thats because your distributor is shot. No tach signal asd relay curcuit will shut down. No power to coil or fuel pump while cranking. You will have system prime at key on. But will loose asd relay function when it fails to see crank signal.
These crank sensors are super easy to test.

5/2021.. I had one of those awesome Jeeps back in 2014 with only 289k miles and ran absolutely mint. Unfortunately living in Rhode island with all the salt, it ate the jeep alive. Unfortunately I had to sell it cause someone wanted the motor, interior, and the rear sound bar. Best vehicle ever. Do you still have the Jeep after all this passed time.

5.9 plug wires are always a issue, Mopar posted a TSB on rerouting the wires and using new clips because the factory wire routing would cause interference and no start issues. My durangos wires were run the old way originally and swapping them to the new routing on the TSB got rid of my CEL. I got some better wires to keep away interference later on.

The kick back on start sounds like the distributer is 180 degrees out or the plug wires are way off on firing order. The distributer on those are slotted so it's either close enough to run or they pulled out the distributer and put it in basically backwards. If that's the case just mark where the rotor is pointed and turn it on 180 and it will start if that is the case. I actually bought a 65 Sport Fury for 150 bucks because a missing title and he couldn't get it to start. My buddy listened to it crank, pulled the distributor, spun it 180 and dropped it back in after I paid for it. It started right up and we drove it home and later parted it out.
    Worth checking out...

Had to get a replacement car quick after my 2006 Honda Civic crashed in 2017. Found an '03 Jeep Liberty V6 with 102K miles that I could buy with the insurance buyout ($4K).
I've put another $4K and about 30K miles into it, and had to relocate across four states in that span, but it's been an absolute trooper! All I need to do now is get some body work to repair/replace rusted door sills and it should last another 50-70K miles, at least!

Bought an F350 SD 4WD with a Warn bumper & 12k lbs. winch for half of book (estate of a friends dad). Biggest things about the Magnum motors- the "Beer barrel" intake is designed for torque. Out of steam by. 4k rpm. Another thing? The heads crack between the valves, normally no water intrusion...if you have to do the motor, stroker crank, heads, and -the toughest thing to find- an intake that will rev to 5500-6000 rpm.

I inherited my dad's '87 Silverado with dual tanks. Mom drove it a few years after Dad passed but only put fuel in one tank. When I went to Oklahoma to pick it up the engine died when I switched to the 2nd tank, which was full of at least 3 year old gas. I poured 6 cans of Berryman B-12 Chemtool in it and it almost ran normally. It got me back to New Orleans. I swear by that stuff.

I've ownd several V8 ZJs and the 5.9 very similar to the 5.3 standard motor... the motor is strong and easy to work on... having that fitted liner, i feel that the previous owner was hauling parts in it and using it as a worktruck... a few years back they weren't worth more than a couple 2-3 grand. And all limiteds and special editions got full size spares with matching alloy, so i will bet its an alloy. Be prepared that no start has something to do with security systems ,and the v8s had brittle ecu computers which tended to get cooked by the heat... those vents are functional and very necessary
