Some good tips. Did my first piece at age 11. I am Now 64. As a single parent wount find pieces in trash etc and my kids and I would redo them as projects in winter months on bad weather days then donate them to folks in need
Just want to say thank you for these awesome videos. They are so helpful, I feel like I’m in furniture flip college 😆 this particular one is exactly what I needed as a beginner. I’m doing as much research as possible before I start my first project.
Loved the tall boy . I am from the uk the thrift stores here are called charity shops each shop is associated with a different charity every penny they make goes to support that particular charity .
It is amazing how polarizing antique furniture can make people! I'm one who usually prefers the look of antique wood furniture over painted furniture. But, I also love the look of a good piece of painted furniture if it fits the space correctly. I actually have both types in my home. For example, I bought my 150 year old Chippendale Mahogany dining room set (Table, 6 chairs, large buffet, small buffet, and China cabinet) from a lady on Letgo for $500. I knew from the minute I saw it I would never paint it because it is simply too beautiful. However, I've bought pieces from two other women on Letgo that were already painted (but are not in very good condition) for the sole purpose of refinishing and repainting them. I got those two for $40 each so I can't complain!! Sorry for the novel just wanted to share my thoughts!! BTW, love your videos!!
pieces that survived multiple civil wars, were made by craftsmen who were skilled in their trade, made with love and care and have possibly traveled across the country multiple times, have had multiple lifetimes just to be painted so that it will fit in with a square's farmhouse aesthetic...yeah I can see why its polarizing..
Thank you so much! Useful information. Here in Melbourne Australia during lockdown our OP Shops (thrift shops) are sadly closed now, but I've been so lucky to find excellent pieces that have been put out in hard waste collection. Lots of fun refurbishing these pieces.
Haha yes I feel conflicted between painting furniture or just refinishing with stain as both look beautiful, but ultimately just want to make sure the furniture stays in good shape so it can be preserved. Those two furniture in the second store, what a deal!
HA! bring it right back ...to the thrift store. Haa ha. I love the video you did on the beginners side table!! The products and techniques are really top notch.
There are a lot of antiques in my family and my father would have a fit at the idea of painting any of them. So, I totally understand what you mean about painting antiques bring polarizing.
This cracks me up, the comment about the man not wanting you to refinish antiques. I could understand to a certain extent, like if there is a lot of value.. I started to paint furniture a few years ago. We were building a house and I started to collect some really pretty pieces with nice shapes that I could redo. My husband couldn't bare to see me paint over them, so now they are as is in the house, in the garage, or I just gave them away.
Christina my husband is that kind of person, he doesn't like that I paint the old furniture, he wants to keep the natural color. I love your videos. Last year when I was driving I saw two small tables on the street I pick them up but I didn't painted yet, also bought a dresser in a state sale.
Thanks for the tips...I did saw before you mention to start small and I did ..I just bought a 5 dl. table kind of looks like the 2 first ones in this video.. and Ive just been messing with it just sanding it by hand..too much work..but hey Im liking it. Thanks for all advice and tips...
Oohing over that high boy piece, definitely worth it to grab weather you use it now or later...that would be over 300 dollars around my area thrift stores. The condition would not even be that beautiful. Go back...lol ;) great channel as I just found you, so far enjoyed what I have seen. Tfs👍
Goodwill is a sleeper. I once found a solid brass and incredibly thick glass topped vintage coffee table in a Goodwill, covered in grime that nobody wanted. It was marked down several times until I snatched it up for $35, discounted from that price by another 20% (because it was on the floor too long). By chance, a couple years later, I happened to see the same piece in an antique shop (not even a high-end shop, a non-profit) going for several hundred dollars. Which means in an upscale antique boutique, the same piece would almost certainly go over a thousand dollars. If you have a good eye, Goodwill is amazing!
I know this is a really old video but I'm just now seeing it. I have an old round pedestal dining table that I want to paint with chalk paint. I have recently realized the top is laminate thanks to this video. The base is solid wood. Would I still be able to paint over the laminate?
Thank you! I had so much fun too. I'm just getting started on my journey of furniture painting and your video really helped me with what to look for when buying a project. Looking forward to seeing more!
I have 2 end tables with a shiny finish, that belonged to my grandmother. They have a shiny finish. What recommendations do you have? I was to keep the antique look.
I’ve seen them charged used forever 21 clothing for more than the original would’ve been. 🤦♀️ goodwill is really out for profits over the past few years
ahhh i always knew the dresser set gifted to me by my fiance (and one that I'm going to paint using your Beyond Paint tutorial) was sturdy, heavy and good quality so I ran upstairs to check and guess what? Dovetails! lol
If you want to buy a big furniture, how do you carry it to your home? Just curious, I always wondered.. I want to get one but it doesn’t fit in my car!
First time I saw your channel is this video. I work at a Restore in Illinios and although some furniture is marked highish...(is that a word) we have a wheel spin on Fridays where you get more of a discount. I will continue to check out your videos.Look like you do great work. PS - not a fan of painting wood, but if it gives it a second life then why not.
1st I watch all your video's and get such inspiration from your finished products. I stumbled upon 2 really old dressers that one is in need of some extra love. I absolutely want to just fix them and resell them because I SADLY don't have room for them. When a dresser need some wood glue or fixing what product do you suggest so that I can just re stain these pieces and bring them back to their prior glory. TIA
I have a minivan which fits just about anything. And we have a truck now, too. Find a friend with a truck. Most of these places will hold your piece until you can find a way to get it home.
I’m enjoying your videos and your technique yet I’m hearing you mentioning stain, which I need help with a cherry wood that I’d like to salvage on a beloved family piece of furniture for my teens to be passed down to them since they refused me on getting rid of. Help and suggestions, it was being moved and front got broke in some detailed area, yet I have considered painting my family would like it original
Also check out fb and Craigslist for free or cheap pieces. So many people tell me they were going to throw it in the dump. 😢 very sad. Ive acquired 6 pieces in the last month. All free!
Here in Abilene Texas, the Goodwill stores prices for furniture are super expensive. Really sad actually, because there’s no way that the less fortunate can afford it. For the same high boy, here they were asking
I don't have any big disasters, but I do have lots of mess ups. Luckily I learn a lessons from them. I found most any mistake can be fixed in some way.
The glass and wood coffee table at goodwill under the white painted end table is Ethan Allen. I refinished that exact table a couple years ago and it is still my favorite transformation. I stained the top gray and painted the bottom white, have my feet propped up on it while watching your video. Love your videos, and I enjoy seeing what people find at thrift stores.
I had my husband pick up my first ever pieces this weekend and I told him : Whatever you say to the man, don't mention that I am refinishing the furniture, he might back off and not sell them to you!
Im moving to an area that seems to have an abundance of antique and mid century furniture. They are sold at auctions with good margins for resale. Haha sometimes I just can’t pass up a good deal on a piece of furniture even though my garage is full.
Same problem here lol
I have the same problem! Lol
LOL SAME .... I recently had to rent a storage unit. Hahahahaha
I know this is a really old video but I'm just now seeing it. I have an old round pedestal dining table that I want to paint with chalk paint. I have recently realized the top is laminate thanks to this video. The base is solid wood. Would I still be able to paint over the laminate?
You can spray matte clear finish over the gloss on a small table like that...simple.
A lot of very useful information!! 👍🏽🔥

Sometimes Goodwill is crazy expensive for poor quality, like when they try to resell Target furniture at cost
Agreed. I don’t understand where they get of charging $150 for a piece of furniture that’s in bad shape as well

I jus love your cool vibe and wealth of info❤️
Thank you!
What beginning tools would you recommend for someone who has never done this, but would like to try.
I have one those places where i live to and the prices are higher..but it is a good place to find cheap handles sometimes

I am assuming that you transform your pieces in your garage. Do you have to worry about temperatures when painting or sealing?
Yes! Its harder to do it in my garage when its extremely cold or hot. I move my painting inside when the temps are too extreme.
Thank you xxx
Is MDF furniture bad furniture to flip?
Im moving to an area that seems to have an abundance of antique and mid century furniture. They are sold at auctions with good margins for resale. Some of the furniture has scrapes and scratches but other than that they are solid and in good condition. I cant find any information about defects on furniture. Does high quality furniture with scrapes sell or are people expecting pristine pieces? I find a lot of the same types you found in restore. Thank you for sharing your experience.
It just depends on your market. My of my stuff is scraped up, but that is why I typically go with a rustic, distressed look for my finishes.
Sometimes you just gotta leave it alone and appreciate the finish it comes in. I guess that’s why the guy was surprised. Lol
I see his point. I appreciate stain and paint. ❤️

But yes some totally needs painting.
I have a couple of pieces in my house, I want to upgrade somehow, but have no clue what to do with them. Is there a way to send yo pics and get advice?
Chad, you can email me or send me a message on instagram. All my info is on www.prettydistressed.com.
How do you normally transport large items home?
We have a truck and mini van so we are able to transport big items. But you can always phone a friend or hire a pickup.
First what eyeliner is that. You rock the midwest Nordic beauty.
Oh wow, thanks. I actually just stamp eye shadow on my lid in a dark brown or black with a definer brush. The secret is I use a black coal liner in my water line. It's Urban Decay 24/7.

Hello, how are you doing, hope your staying safe?
I want to know more about finding a place like this to shop at. How do you find places like this?
Asking around and Google have been my best sources.
What should I do if i can't feel the wood grain on my piece? I bought chalk paint and wax. Do you suggest I sand it down a bit first?
If it isn't super glossy, you should be able to paint right on it without sanding.
Do u have a furniture repaint website?

In my country all the prices you saw multipli by ten or even more 😭😭😭😭
