    It's been 5 years since you made this video. If you still have the couch, fail or not, a follow up video sounds like a good idea.
    Either way, you could celebrate how well it held up or share a "this is what I learned" experience.

    You matched that color so well! I have two (free) faux leather couches and I did this very same thing however, I added fabric softener to the paint to make it stretchy. After 3 years, one couch held up great and the other...well, not so much. I'm going to order the acrylic this time and see if this does the trick! Thanks for the tip! Also! If anyone is taking off a significant amount of the peeling, a hair dryer and a table knife makes it come off like butter! Heat up that vinyl and it nearly slides off with the knife!

    PRO TIP: peel, sand with fine grit, spray with artist matt clear, spray paint (not brush) to exact color, spray over with gloss leather polish for shoes. It will last much longer and will not crack. Painting may look good but another six months of body heat, shifting while sitting, etc and you have the same problem but now it's cracking under the varnish you painted on. Spraying with leather coat will keep the spray color perfect for a long time and the underspray will stop the continued peeling.

    Great video. A few points tho. Don’t use leather wipes to clean. They have moisturizer In them to hydrate leather and those same things will stop the glue or dye or finisher from properly bonding. Wash that area with acetone. The bond should last years.

      adding more points, a bit of light sanding might help too.

    I'm impressed with you. I admire people that can do things themselves. I'm 81 and I'm amazed at how helpless so many young people are now. OK, now my ideas to help this go easier and faster. Use a 2-3 inch brush when covering a large area like you had to do. Also on this job if you'd laid the couch down on its back the paint wouldn't have run down toward the seat nearly as much. You did a great job but you spent way more time on it than was necessary. The couch looks great and my computer chair is jealous so I'll be doing it.
    Cheers, Neill

    Hi! So I am doing this patch right now and I have some notes! The paint you found works great but I could only find it in small bottles so I had to figure out how to make it last. Mix the right color, add a layer or two, then do the top coat (I found a satin varnish that is pretty spot on for matching a leather sheen) then keep painting to build it up! I found that the fabric absorbs the paint a lot and makes it hard to build up an even surface. My couch is looking so much better now though!

    • @dorothydanridge
      @dorothydanridge 3 роки тому +1

      I have that same question. How much paint did you finally buy? I want to redo a handbag in bronze but I only saw the bottles in one ounce sizes and I have no idea if that will be enough for a handbag . I guess I'll buy 2 bottles and if there's any left over I'll use it on shoes or something.

      @@SimpleMomming One question. I did everything you said. It looks great, but the the painted area isn't as soft as the rest of the couch. It's pretty ruff in that area. Any ideas on how to smooth it out? Thanks.

    • @SimpleMomming
      @SimpleMomming  6 років тому +1

      Fight The Bully! Yeah, like I mentioned in the video it doesn’t take it back to brand new but it does look pretty good. Mine was also a little rough because it’s fabric underneath the paint. One person suggested that I might have gotten a smoother result if I would’ve used some sand paper to smooth it out first. I’m not sure if that would have helped but I thought that was a good idea. The only thing I can think of is if there is something you could paint over the area first, like to give it a thicker foundation (it would need to be thicker than paint) and then paint on top of that once there’s a smooth texture. I’m not sure if a product like that exists and being a little rough hasn’t bothered me personally, but I know everyone’s couch is probably a little different. I’m sorry it turned out rough :( I wish I knew of a product you could just coat on prior to painting that would give it a smoother base. If you find anything that works, you’ll definitely have to come back and share it with everyone here! I’ll let you know if I hear of anything too!

It says in the closet on its original hanger and covered with the store bag it came home with. I don't understand why it's peeling.
    I have thought about bedazzling the arms, its only the under part that is leather and peeling. The side panels under the arms have some cracks trying to peel.
    After seeing your video I'm thinking about leather paint instead 🤔

      Fake leather? All leather is dyed or painted is it's not in it's raw state. Bonded leather isn't fake, but it's not regular leather either. When you buy furniture there are several different types of leather furniture. The most economical and probably best way to buy it is what they call leather touch. That means every where your body touches is leather and the sides and the back are vinyl. I've got a really nice electric reclining sofa and cuddle chair. It's not as big as the chair and a half but pretty big and my sofa reclines on both ends and they're as big as the cuddle chair so there's no middle piece when both sides are recline the entire sofa is reclined. However since getting this furniture I've gotten two pit bulls oh, and I don't make them stay off the furniture. I've always been the type of person that my dogs are part of the family and I don't keep family off the furniture. My sofa is BONDED leather. That's where they take scraps of leather grind it all up and you some kind of glue or something to stick it all back together and make a material that they can call leather or bonded leather and it almost always has a nylon type backing. A lot of people will peel all the poly pipe coating on the front and it'll be almost hairy LOL and looks like suede. Then you can repaint it with chalk paint and wax the crap out of it to seal it and it really does look like leather again but it is very very very labor-intensive and mine is not breaking up like the one in the video mine is just wearing off really badly. I've got a few burn holes in the arm and a cut in one of the arms that you can repair with a little kit that's basically a bunch of ground up leather and some glue. There's a company called heritage something that sells a really nice kid that you paint the entire thing with this white flu like stuff and let it completely dry and sand it all off, and then you paint it whatever color you want to paint it. Usually it's best to paint at the exact same color because you would have to work really hard and spend a lot of money to cover the entire piece of furniture with that glue. I have seen pieces of furniture that look like it needed to be in the dump turn out to look like nearly brand-new furniture. I seen videos on UA-cam I'm sure they can be found. I do know heritage is the first part of the name of the company. What she is doing I did and it didn't work for me for very long, BUT, I didn't use the acrylic sealer. I'm sure it was the reason! I'm excited to get some of that and try it again!

    after watching this, I decided to strip a stool completely, I used my finger nails , its taken almost 3 days ,and it looks great, instead of being black leather, its now a grey material, saves buying a new stool.

    you did a great job!! ok, now I'm going to go for it - seriously I think I have exactly the same couch! my peeling is nearly alll of the two seats though and foot rests - about how many tubs of the 4oz black and brown colors did you go through for your project please?? Thanks again so much!

      If I remember correctly, I think I might of used around 2 of the brown and maybe half of 1 of the black... 🤔 I hope it works out for you! Some people in the comments suggested sanding it first to make a smoother surface which I think may have worked even better than what I did :) Good luck!

      @@SimpleMomming hi again! I’m ordering now- if I use your link I hope you get a little credit- I would NEVER have found it except for your video! QUESTION: so if you used about 2 and a half bottles of the Paint should I also get two and a half bottles of the Top Coat? Or maybe less because only one layer? Thanks!

      @@NYENERGIZERFAVES I don’t remember exactly, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t use as much of the clear coat as I did the color paint... 🤔 Good luck!!

    That was better than most videos. How is the couch doing now 2 and a half year later? Maybe one could carefully disolve 1-2 mm of the rim of the repair -spot with acetone and a brush a few hours before painting to get more even transition. - Just an idea and might ruin the job. I especially like that you didnt make an overly long video. All the best and keep them coming :)

    I think this is a great idea! I was wondering would some kind of latex filler for the edges. I was thinking hair glue as I'm unfamiliar with the latex options out there. I researched and the paint will stick to the latex. Also, maybe a drop of red to better match the couch; it has a red undertone.

    Nice job, You might want to add a step with some very, very fine sandpaper at the transitions from the skin to the underlayment. You could start more coarse to ultra-fine. You might start with 400 grit and ending with 1000, just need to play with your leather. We have a 10 yr old office chair that just started shedding its skin like a bad sunburn. May give this a try.
