Basement Prepper Pantry Expansion for Canning Supplies
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2022
- This week I tackled the basement. I had to build additional prepper pantry shelving units to add storage for hundreds of canning jars and supplies. At the same time, I built two shelving units for general storage and finally got the entire basement and workshop cleaned, sorted, labeled and organized. This was a big job but so glad to have it done!

Thanks 👍
I wish my husband had OCD in the area of the garage..so guess whose cleaning the garage this week? He just told me don't touch his tools 😂....the hard work is done and its organized and my OCD feels better!
Aaah, so THAT'S where all the canning jars went, lol.
Awesome pantry. I have pantry envy.
nice to see an update. Love to see how your new home is progressing
Thanks!
In your new home and everything organized before winter hits! It looks amazing.
Yes! Thank you!
Looks really good.
Suggestion: Have you thought about making a root cellar inside the basement? Use a small air conditioner to lower the temperature but with a Cool Bot attached, so you can get it down to 40 degrees F; perfect for storing all the root crops, such as potatoes, squash, carrots, beets, etc, etc. Dump the air conditioner warm air into the rest of the basement to help keep the temperature in those spaces more comfortable.
Yay first comment and top 3 likes. Love this content. Best to you and your family. Happy Wednesday.
Same to you!
What a great feeling to have everything in its place….. including all the “scraps “.
OCD is happy . . and the basement looks great !!!
17 7/8ths sounds like a mind bending way to measure when you're from a country that uses metric 😂 It's kind of impressive to be honest
I can't stand it! It's even funnier if you consider many Americans struggle with fractions 🤣
Killer shelves, Jeremy! You're right, the projects are neverending. But, you can only do one at a time so get 'er done, as they say! Give my best to Jaime! It's quilt weather now! I'm ready. Sick of heat and bugs. Take care. ~Cynthia
YES! Had the windows open all week with the AC off. It's been awesome.
One of the requirements of the build we're doing is a set of shelves in the pantry set for the height of quart jars without wasting space. Having too many canning jars is a "sorry, not sorry" situation because we use them but they really are a massive PITA.
Love this! I remember your old Prepper pantry from back in the day. We modeled some of the shelves we made based on your design.
Nice job Jeremy. cool to have everything in place. tell Jamie and the Girls we said Hi. stay safe.
Long time watcher, first time poster:
I just recently bought some mylar bags to start storing dried foods like in one of your old videos. I figure better late than never to start a pantry, might help ease some of my anxiety about all the droughts, floods and war across the globe affecting food supply. My only problem is we don't currently use a lot of beans etc in our diet, if you're up for it, I'd really appreciate a video or two of "meals from a prepper panty" showing the sorts of meals you guys make?
Also maybe a question for "the dirt" if you make another one - health up-date (if you don't mind of course)? I remember at the start of the build Jeremy had slipped a disc in his back and Jamie had eye surgery, how are you both now?
I've always been sorta so-so about beans. I love chili and would buy canned beans for that, refried beans etc. But, we never did much with other beans other than a yearly navy bean ham soup or Busch's baked beans. Oddly now that I am canning - we are eating more beans. I never cared much for black beans - thought they didn't taste like much but home canned with garlic are amazing and now I find myself eating them all the time. I'm making homemade baked beans from scratch, finally found an excellent red beans & rice recipe and have that at least twice a month if not more. So, canning beans has made me more interested in eating beans and finding ways to use what I canned. Took me a while to figure out how to turn my jars of pinto's into good refried or bean dip that can compete with the store version, but now that I'm close it's time to can up another load.
So, I'd recommend starting with a couple types you already know you will / can eat. Even if it's only beans for chili. When you eat out, check out how beans are used in the menu and see what appeals to your family then browse the internet until you find a recipe that satisfies your tastebuds.
One of our favorites is a jar of the garlic black beans, add a can of corn, red onion, cilantro, either salsa or tomatoes and whatever else strikes your fancy like cumin or garlic, lemon or lime juice. makes a great small taco or chip dip or even just a salad side dish.
I hate waste, and maybe also have a little OCD. Looks fabulous. Well Done...😅
Hellooo, I love the way you built the shelves, I'm all about utilizing every inch for storage. Thanks for another video
I wish I had a basement. I am pretty much out of room for jars, filled or otherwise. Can wait to get the table finished for the Freeze dryer and dehydrators. The shelves and organization is amazing, you did a great job, and Jamie will be thrilled!!!
Yeah we don't have basements in Florida. Storage is non-existent
Must keep our OCD happy!!! Looks amazing. Was just wondering what you've been up to. Glad to see another video 💙. Looking forward to what's to come.
You are such a hard worker and your OCD helps so much with organization
Love your storage system it’s just beautiful
Omg! Wish I had such an accomplished OCD guy in my life!! Great work 👏
So awesome!!
I have some of my pantry in dressers. I store my clothes in closets and under the bed, so might as well.
Whatever it takes
Wow that is just fabulous!
So so soooo satisfying.
Fantastic .
I notice you have shelved food items in packages and boxes. You may want to get those items in jars to prevent attracting bugs and items going stale.
Great job Jeremy!
awesome shelves they look great
Looks amazing 🤩 Blessings ❤️
Fabulous shelving units!!!
Pantry looks amazing
looks so nice Jeremy
So glad to see you all, hard road to get there. Blessings and enjoy.
Thank you so much for taking time out to share with us the quality of the videos that you post set a high bar in a good example for new creators
The final touches are coming along nicely! OCD kept in check is a good thing! 🤩👍🏾
Love the tape/towel dispenser rod setup in the workshop!
Nice shelves. You are such a hard worker, but your house is beautiful and the basement looks great. 🇨🇦🍻
Looks great! Such a great feeling to get everything in it's place. Well done!
I can't wait for the canning videos
Simple practical and functional execution of basic projects
Great work. Organization is key.
I love all of your videos❤
Clever use of warped board! Looks great!
Always inspired when I watch your channel... THANK YOU!!!
Wonderful job! Your pantry is so well planned and beautiful.
I'm so impressed and reassured that you all have the discipline to create a barrier between UA-cam and what needs to be done around the house I've had several projects that were all consuming including building and operating my own bakery the self discipline that you showed to put your family 1st is a good example to follow
Thanks. Will use your plan to build shelves for storing grains for my Homebrewing Hobby 💯💯🍻🍻🍻😁
Great job
Few things make me happier than shelves, feels good man!
Great job. I need to do this to my out building. God Bless and stay safe.
Great job as always and God bless.
Always delighted to see a new video from you. And another action packed video that is well worth watching .. always learn something from your methods. It really is satisfying somehow to see organization even if it's someone else's space! Great job..domestic ocd is a great quality in a husband!
Your shelves look nice and sturdy.
Nice job! It is an amazing feeling and so fulfilling to "getting it done" -- love the canning area and storage. I reviewed some of Jaime's old videos recently. I remember finding her in 2020. You both work very hard and it shows. Take care!
Nice love your shelve nice work.
Even you mess is organized! Ha-ha! The house is looking great!
I was thinking the same thing. The "absolute wreck" is totally organized and clean looking.
Great to see a new video! It is looking OCD approved 🥃
Good Job 😁❣
👍👍👍👍👍 I may be OCD, too.
Your ocd and mine must be friends! 😂 My quilt studio has similar organization! My husband won't let me do the rest of the house though 🙄😔
Those are very nice storage shelves.
Thank you!
looks like just the right amount of wine to go /w the canning supplies =p
Wine boxes 😂
Nice work!
Thanks!
nice
Looks great. I have a really big basement with a lot of food and no shelves. Hard to find anyone to do the work
Hey there, GBF. Would you please put these videos into a "PANTRY" Play-list? All the videos in the Description should be in it.
I noticed you have a Prepper play-list but that's a catch-all for EVERYTHING prepping-related.
Until then, I'm going to have to leave this tab open so I have easy access to that list of videos.
(They're now on my round-to-it list.)
Thanks.
Good morning! Any wind up your way? Long time watcher and we finally subscribed :) Starting our homestead since we are being pushed out of our town with all the new people mooving in. Its too crowded now! Your foundation video has helped us a lot. We are in that phase of a tiny house now.
Welcome to the Circus. Power was out for 12 hours but they got it back on. It was pretty windy up here!
Nice job, I’m definitely wired the same way. It looked like you were sweeping off the plywood you ripped. I use a leaf blower and blow it all into orbit :-)
There you go.
Can I send you my husband to teach him about organization? Lol. Awesome job! My OCD would be happy too!!
I have a dumb question. I have only started building things in the last year and I'm still trying to get the hang of the tools and the cuts and the drilling. What size screws are you using for this? My standard has been "As long as it doesn't poke out the other end" but there might be a more educated answer than this. :) Thank you.
That's actually a good rule. Long enough to go through both pieces and not poke out the other side hahahaha! These are 2.75" screws and they probably countersink about 1/8" leaving 1/8" of space on the other side to not poke through.
Hiya Jeremy and Jaime
This looks fantastic. Could you give us a link to the black plastic "racks" some of your canning jars are stored in?
Yes please
Did you build a safe room/ gun safe area? Nice canning space.
Hi
Happy to see you managed your OCD and mine 😂 😂
Im wondering if you will eventually finish the basement or will you leave the rough walls?
Will you enclose the pantry section to minimize the dust from your shop work?
Best wishes always.
Eventually there will be a separate dedicated shop.
Can you bring your OCD to my garage? 😂 Great job!
I love purging stuff that no longer serves a purpose in our house. Aaaah
Your OCD and my OCD would get along just fine.
My storage is going to be pallet racks, not a big woodworking job, they are rated to hold 4,500 lbs per shelf I think so I'll have to try really hard to overload them.
The shelves are wire so no wood and I'm going to try to eliminate all cardboard packaging to have no hiding places or bedding material for insects or rodents.
Eventually I want to do some canning and store 5-6 months of food but it will mostly be for general storage.
I know how u feel about organizing.
hmmmm there might be a usable method here. How to get the hubby to build shelves for canning? Easy store all the canning stuff in his work area and wait for OCD to take over! LOL. Just kidding around with you. It looks fantastic!
My ocd thanks your ocd 🤣
now your OCD will insist that you stain the shelves.
Nnnnnnnnno
Great job! I wish I had a large pantry space. I live in a nearly historic home (over 130 years old) and the only pantry is one under the stairs to the attic. I'm trying to figure out an economical way to expand into what I currently use as my seed starting room which does not have the heat and air to it. Long story short that room is just part of the wrap around front porch that was closed off with the original owner. So it butts up against the solid rock foundation thus making it expensive to run the venting to that section. Ugh. If you have any thoughts, let me know because I'll tell you I have jars coming out of ears and no real organization to them due to the lack of space. 🤣
Hey! Love the channel--do you guys use a freeze dryer or do you plan to in the future? Seems like a great thing to have in your arsenal :)
No we don't and don't really have plans to at the moment.
@@Guildbrookfarm Very good--I know your canning knowledge is pretty awesome so figured you would do that as well :)
👍
Time to build an out building for canning. Keeps the mess outside and the extra heat from heating up the house.
Just built an entire house with a kitchen made for canning. 🤔
What is the maximum temperature you can store canned food (maybe underground) in hotter climates?
50-70 degrees according to the University of Missouri Extension is ideal.
Lol, aaaahh it's been a slog hasn't it! But such lovely results. Total therapy getting ridda cr*p you've been meaning to for years too, I've been doing that the last few weeks. Will that be the last of the staining once the baseboards are done? :)
Until I start building furniture... 😅
@@Guildbrookfarm Good thing the results are worth it ;) I made the mistake of buying cheap flat pack drawers, wardrobe and dressing table a couple of weeks ago. Spent 3 hours that I'll never get back assembling a set of drawers that trembled with terror every time I walked past and literally none of the drawer runners would hold the drawer in. Whilst these were quite cheap items, they weren't so cheap that I'd have expected them to be so pathetically awful. And it wasn't my sad DIY skills at fault, I'm quite capable of assembling well made furniture - none of the holes for screws and things were in the right place, or were too big so they didn't hold panels firmly in place. Returned the whole lot for a refund and had to spend another 2 hours dissasembling :O
They are wrapped with metal to keep your load from flying off the truck and keep the public safe.
I know why they’re banded. I just wish it didn’t damage the product.
@@Guildbrookfarm if they cared, they would add a small cardboard cushion where the band contacts the product. some do, but most don't
That Toshiba box doesn't trigger your OCD? 😁
Was storing your food all this time ok in the sheds?
Yep. 💯
5S
What are the yellow lines on the wall?
Spray foam
@@Guildbrookfarm
Oh ok👍
We are new to canning and could definitely build something like these shelves in our basement. I’m concerned, however, about the humidity level. We run a dehumidifier 24/7, but I don’t know what percentage humidity is optimal/safe for our canned foods. It’s a finished basement, no windows; it has a musty smell right now so I moved the jars we have so far upstairs to our kitchen pantry. I know that’s a better environment but we would love to use our basement space if at all possible.
Any input will be much appreciated.
Cool and dark is good. Humidity shouldn’t bother the sealed contents of your jars.
@@Guildbrookfarm Fantastic! Thank you! And your shelves are exactly what we had in mind for our home-canned storage.
@@Guildbrookfarm Hi, one more quick question: will it be necessary to remove a section of carpet before we install our shelves? It’s thin, probably cheap, basement-grade carpet. Thanks!
I wouldn't worry about it.
A Like & A Comment For The Algorithm.
If you use what you have you have what you need
Now I've made the shelves I need to fill 'em!
Now I've filled the shelves with jars i need to fill 'em!
........ And NOW my OCD is happy (until I start the baseboards)!
Personally I suffer from a rare form of OCD.
It's like regular OCD but I just have to mess things up! ;o)
