Oh my goodness, we are so alike. years ago i had my very 1st root cellar. WE had a access hatch thru the floor in the kitchen. It was small and the shelves were old but when it was loaded with all my jars of canning..i would stay down there for a long time organizing jars by colors and types. I also had bought canned items...and i would organize them as well. I loved my old ugly root cellar. Now we live in a old church and my cold room in under the bell tower. Its 8x8ft. And i love it so much. But i need more room so we will be putting up more shelves outside the cold room to store my big canners, roasters etc. I love the excitement in your face and voice...and i can totally relate.
That's so beautiful! Looks amazing and so organized. The green beans that's so funny. They first time I planted beans I planted so many. We had beans gallor I canned 79 quarts jars! That was after giving bins to our livestock and us eating so many fresh ones, haha.
Looking SOooo pretty with the 'Jewels" of the pantry all showcased in their natural glory! Personally the magnificent magenta of the beets steal the color show! I love your enthusiasm and the family effort to put food by!
Super gorgeous!! Wow Todd what an Amazing job!! What material did you use on the back of the shelves? Wow You have given me great ideas, Ty God bless you both Happy building your next project !! Linda from Ct 🙏🙏
Looks so beautiful. Love the canning lid garland. I finally got a pressure canner and a water canner. My goal is to learn how to can. I’m so happy to have discovered your channel. I currently live in a condo but I want to get out in the country, have a bigger garden than what my balcony allows and just get prepared. 🌸🌿
Wow! What a pantry! So amazing! Good job to both of you! I would love to be a little mouse and come down there and eat till I couldn’t eat no more! Jk! 😊Everything looks so good and so colorful! Love it!
It looks great! Todd, the shelf builder. Lol he is multi-talented. A keeper. I love storage for canning. Seeing all the colors and what nots, it always takes me back to my grandmothers house (it burned down when I was in high school). The fire may have taken all the things she had, but our family still have the wonderful memories. Tfs. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
I’m just catching up on your older posts. This is a wonderful sight and showcases both Todd’s handy work and your skills in the kitchen. I’d be thrilled if this was my pantry. A place for everything and everything in it’s place.
GOOD JOB 👍 THANKS HOW YOU DECIDED THE MEASUREMENTS IS VERY HELPFULL AND I THINK IT DEFINITELY GIVES MORE ROOM THAN THE CANNING CADDY . THANKS SO MUCH MOE
Beautiful pantry , my uncle Duke was a great wood worker and built floor to ceiling shelves surrounding the basement half that was my aunt Julie's great memories ,they were full a sight. See !
Better than contact paper is cheap vinyl flooring sold by the yard. Lay it on, don't glue down. It will lay really flat and it's super durable an easy to clean. Used to use that in cabinets, particularly under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, when I lived in "less expensive" rentals. Covers a multitude of sins. While you don't need it here to cover anything unsightly, some of your equipment and even some heavier jars could rip or damage contact paper.
I need to do something like this. I have a lot of wasted basement space. Currently putting vinyl tile squares working from new washer and dryer out into the rest of the room. Just a little at a time, cleaning as I go. Had to clean out a lot of spider webs and eggs. I don’t can, but I want a place that’s shallower, where I can store canned and jars of goods I buy. Right now I have to get down on knees and rummage under the cabinets. Not a good situation for someone getting older.
My panty/storage is in my basement and you could consider using a primer/sealer like Kilz2 or Zinzer's Bullseye. Both of those will seal your wood and they can be tinted for color to hide dirt accumulation
I love it! I would say my only concern would be putting bungie cords or a price of wood added to the front of the shelves so if there is a large earthquake it helps save hard so they don't fall over and off the shelves.. just a thought! I love watching your guys videos!! Thanks!
super great build. the chalk is a brilliant idea. i guess it must not be convenient because i have never seen a canning shelf, pantry in my family or on youtube having them but i am from a earthquake state so i would have needed a decent size lip or a slat across the front jars to keep them on the shelf. love and respect all the canning you do. blessings. 🕊
Fantastic!!!! There is a Bluetooth device called a Sensor Push. They sell on Amazon for $50 and track temperature and humidity. They update every minute. Its beautiful. I have wooden shelves and I’m in the process of buying metal shelves with wheels because my basement kind of smells mildey, I have to run my dehumidifier all the time. Great job! I also have those same metal canisters!
An observation: perhaps put a restraint band horizontally from one end to the other between each horizontal wood post to hold the jars in place in case of an earthquake. Otherwise, all your wonderful food items will land up on the floor which will make for one huge, messy clean up not to mention the cost of replacing your canning jars and food items.
Looks good Tod did a good job. when we put in our pantry I painted the front of the shelves with chalkboard paint, that way if I have to move things around its easy to relabel them. keep up the good work, God Bless.
Love your pantry, it is awesome. Someone mentioned putting up a string or rope line to prevent jars from falling off the shelf in an earthquake or other event. It is just food for thought.
Of course I love the new pantry. So much color, so easy to find things, a project built with love. I have to admit though, when I saw you take the old shelves out and swing them around into clean wall space, I kept thinking. Good! Over flow room. When you really want to can and store most/all of you food there is never enough room. I do believe this project will put a smile on your face for years. Love it.
I love the final product! You'll need another entire basement for another canning storage next year ;p Time for a hillside root cellar build ;) I like the shelves the natural color. I love how yall organized it by color.
I love it!!! IF you paint the front of it with chalk board paint you can write what is on that shelf and area but also be able to change it if need be.
I have two. It doesn't heat the house up as much on a hot day. If it is still to hot, you can put them plug themo in outside and keep all the heat out side.
Wonderful job you two!! Just found you guys today! We are moving to Michigan at some point this year. I love how you made a area for the appliances. I'm going to keep that and contact paper in mind when we build ours!
Nice job...thx 4 the tips on how 2 build the shelves...i am building something similar w/a countertop bar 4 my bar stools n my brkfast nook...i love the look of the canning jars, vintage caniaters & vintage kitchen tools
I am having a floor to ceiling cabinet built in my mudroom. It will be 8' high x 50" wide with 32" deep. There will be doors to match the built in cabinets that I already have that are full of my canned goods. I also hijacked a cabinet in my hall. So I will have a bottom shelf to put my 2 pressure canners front to back. And my stock pots, electric water bath canner I just got and luv by the way. Then the guy making the cabinet is making the shelves at diff heights for my diff jars. I cant wait. I will have it filled in probably 10 seconds. I have to put all my jars in my attic as I have so many. Love how yours turned out! If you get the canning fever, like I have (thanks u tube!) You will need more room soon. Lol
Your basement is like mine. However, mine is taller than yours. My Nephew is 6'4" and he has never run into the vents. I also have an outside door to the basement, and that really helps. With Covid, I haven't been able to get shelfs built like yours, but I have all the wood except the plywood to build it. I do have shelves up, but want ones like yours, so I can put more things on them. Running out of room LOL. I have two chest freezers. I did have a water line break and my basement got flooded, so I had to take all the walls down. Mine has cement floors too. No, I wouldn't paint the shelves. My storage is right by the stairs also. In one corner of the basement, I did have a root cellar, but now have cemented the floor. I didn't like the smell of it years ago, but now wish I had it back! Great work Todd! Rach too! BTW, I mailed out a package to you today, you should get it by Saturday.
I say it's absolutely beautiful! We have the same type of walls in our basement...so hubby and I are inspired by what you guys have done :0) The chalk writing is a great idea!! Will you store your syrup down there too? ENJOY
I love to can and fill up my pantry shelves too. MY problem is we can't eat it fast enough to keep canning like I have been. Oh well. Guess I cut back a couple years. Know anybody that wants the old fashioned 10 day soak sweet pickles? Lol
I get it that's how I feel about green beans too! I plan on taking every 7 years off, not sure I'll ever be able to stock up enough meat though for a long break
Love your pantry! My question the root vegetables that you have in crates at the bottom. I was going to spread mine out, does that matter? Will they keep longer iba crate, I’m not sure, this is going to be my first root cellar that I am making our of a room 8n an old mobile home tha5 one day we will be having classes in, hopefully. Hugs and love from Texas.
I love your pantry. Wouldn't paint them either, I do have a pretty shelf liner on mine. Beautiful job and so sturdy. It's exactly how you want it and that's what is important...it's your pantry😊
Do you have pests in your basement? I learned the hard way that I can’t store anything in bags on my basement shelves. Mice chewed through plastic to gorge themselves on dry rice. A few months later they chewed through the heavy Penzeys bags of spices. Who knew that mice were such gourmands to enjoy chili powder? So now I only store glass and metal and rigid plastics downstairs.
i paused at 8:34 , the painting and or contact paper topic, I would like to weigh in here, leave the wood to do its thing, ive never been in a root cellar , or a Nanas cellar for that matter, that was finished or painted. In the spirit of your signiture decade and homestead theme overall , I believe that true canning and preserving spawned from the Great Depression era (yes, i know, call me captain obvious) but the ladies (at that time they were almost exclusively ladies) were more concerned with feeding babies then looking pretty. I can remember my wifes grandmothers home basement filled with jars of "stuff" and a second hand stove she used to can her garden. Grampie was a MDC mounted Police officer, he built much the same pantry set as you did. May never had a "job" or a drivers licence for that matter. She filled her role as home maker to perfection. There were no worries over how the pantryshlves looke, they served their purpose. Upstairs was a different story. A small kitchen, a small Den and a small dining room. the last room to visit was the sewing room, Here would be the Singer 66 ready to mend a rip or sew gown.
It looks so nice! Congratulations, you two, you did a phenomenal job! About the contact paper, it would be nice for the look and ease of cleaning, but have you ever used it and then had it on a surface for years? It wrinkles all up and cracks and is almost impossible to remove. It leaves a gummy, sticky mess! I would suggest shelf liner instead. It looks similar, but doesn’t have the adhesive to deal with. You can remove it and replace it easily. I like the idea of the chalk to label things. I think it would be cute to either paint the front edges with chalkboard paint or put strips of black paper along it to write on. Or even green like the old chalkboards!
Chiming in here to agree about old contact paper. Yuck! Newspaper works fine, I like to put it on top of a shelf full of jars as well, especially on the least-used jars in the back, just to keep a layer of dust off. It's easy to replace each season. Shelf paper or parchment paper works great, too. Costco sells giant rolls of parchment paper that I found to be too thin for using as parchment paper (well, it was cheap!), so I use that for drying stuff, but it could be excellent shelf paper.
They are beautiful. But I have found out since I started canning in 2017 that the longer you can the more storage you will need. But from what I see you still have enough room for more shelves.
Very nice! I’m planning something similar for my 1904 basement that looks a lot like yours. I’m thinking of putting some screw eyes a couple of inches above my shelves so that I can hook bungee cords across the fronts of my shelves in case I start to knock a jar off. On the potential molding wall issue, I wonder whether you could drill holes in the plywood shelf backing at intervals that would let some air circulate between the wall and the shelf backs and allow any moisture to escape more easily. I really like your setup and am glad to have seen it while my plans are still in progress.
I absolutely LOVE it. There's only one thing I would have done differently and that is... I would have put it in my house 🤣. Well done y'all, well done.
The pantry looks great. But I what find just beautiful is all the preserved that you have on hand. I have never canned before but watching your videos is very inspiring and I would like to try it some day. First thing I need is a canner lol.
Oh do it Andrea, start with something easy and cost affordable like carrots. It's so rewarding to shop from your own stores with food your confident in feeding your family
As we get ready to build our house, I love to see ideas on how to do different things. Your new pantry has given me many ideas! We are excited about our new build but so very sad that means no canning this year as we have no room in our tiny rental. Looking forward to next year! Also, I adore the canning lids hanging. So cute!
I love your new pantry!!!! So jealous of the basement (I grew up in KS & now live in OK & still hate that basements are not something you want here usually - something about the clay & water issues😷😢😭😳). Someday I want to have a pantry like that!
I love it! I wouldn’t paint the wood either. I wouldn’t use contact paper but rather shelf liner that just sits on it rather than glued to the wood.
Absolutely! Contact paper can be horrible to get off, especially from raw wood, so shelf liner is a much better solution and certainly cleanable!
I loathe contact paper since I had to peel off some a tenant had used on a rental and it was horrible work, still some on the cupboards :/
You should paint the front of shelves with chalkboard paint that way you can redo labeling as needed, use colored chalk to add colorful look.
That was my thought as I was watching the video. It would make it easier to change the labeling and easier to read it, and it would look good, too!
I'm really suffering from pantry envy. That looks brilliant. ❤
Thank you, I am loving it! So nice to have it right there at the stairs
I love the shelves that are high enough for just one quart jar instead of having wasted space above the jar.
Yes very intentional
@@1870s Unless you like to use 1/2 gallon jars.
I would also paint the edges where you have the chalk with chalkboard paint. That way the chalk would show up brighter. It looks really good, guys!!
You should be so happy. What a beautiful pantry. I would love that. Everybody's a worry troll.......its all good.
Oh my goodness, we are so alike. years ago i had my very 1st root cellar. WE had a access hatch thru the floor in the kitchen. Loving it!!!! Congrats!
Oh!!! Thank you that's such a compliment coming from you!
That's so beautiful! Looks amazing and so organized. The green beans that's so funny. They first time I planted beans I planted so many. We had beans gallor I canned 79 quarts jars! That was after giving bins to our livestock and us eating so many fresh ones, haha.
"I'm a new canner' "Only been at this 3 years" lol I WISH I had been cannign that long. I still need a pressure canner :)
One day at a time you'll accomplish your goals
Looking SOooo pretty with the 'Jewels" of the pantry all showcased in their natural glory! Personally the magnificent magenta of the beets steal the color show! I love your enthusiasm and the family effort to put food by!
P.S. My Mom lined her pantry shelves with linoleum sections. Easy to cut easy to wipe!
If you know where it is, you’re good.
Inspired by your pantry, we just ran downstairs and strung up our canning rings to open up more space for jars.
How fun!!
Super new! Very nice 3-4 years make you a pro in my opinion. Great work.
Thank you 😊❤️
NICE job, 'I' would put a cleat on the front edge of each jar shelf to keep ME from knocking things off (yeah that happens)
I considered it, may still if I find myself just as clumsy
I did that to mine too.
Super gorgeous!!
Wow
Todd what an Amazing job!!
What material did you use on the back of the shelves? Wow
You have given me great ideas,
Ty
God bless you both
Happy building your next project !!
Linda from Ct 🙏🙏
Looks so beautiful. Love the canning lid garland. I finally got a pressure canner and a water canner. My goal is to learn how to can. I’m so happy to have discovered your channel. Thanks for sharing. Nice & dark like I hear you should. I just started canning last weekend-1 week. Lol. I keep reading & learning.
Love the pantry!Phenomenal build. You both work so well together. It's nice to see. No...don't paint the shelves. Looks nice as is.
Cool food pantry 👌👍😎. New fan of your work and videos. I just subscribed.
This is nice Rachel. I've seen it before in newer videos. You and Todd did an amazing job on the shelving. You always inspire me. Blessings! 🙂♥
See !

I love it!! An inspiration to clear out my crazy stuffy basement to redo my pantry.
One can see the graph by hour, day, week, month etc. It works great in my pantry in NH and in my camper fridge when we travel. You can get a device so that it will transmit over the internet, but I have found the Bluetooth to be sufficient for my needs. It has been comforting to know this data for food safety purposes. There are likely other devices also, I am extremely happy with this device and have been using it for about 2 years continuously and have never needed to change the battery
Its beautiful. I have wooden shelves and I’m in the process of buying metal shelves with wheels because my basement kind of smells mildey, I have to run my dehumidifier all the time.
Great job! I also have those same metal canisters!
Love your pantry, wonderful, l9l I just sent this video to hubby!!
7:40 That's 12°C for the rest of the world. Low temps and low humidity are a requirement for long term food storage.
Looks good Tod did a good job. when we put in our pantry I painted the front of the shelves with chalkboard paint, that way if I have to move things around its easy to relabel them. keep up the good work, God Bless.
I love the evolution of your pantry❤.
Love your pantry, it is awesome. Someone mentioned putting up a string or rope line to prevent jars from falling off the shelf in an earthquake or other event. It is just food for thought.
Final video of the basement pantry. Turned out great!!
Of course I love the new pantry. So much color, so easy to find things, a project built with love. I have to admit though, when I saw you take the old shelves out and swing them around into clean wall space, I kept thinking. Good! Over flow room. I think your shelves are perfect, and they seem to be holding up well in your future videos!
I love the final product! You'll need another entire basement for another canning storage next year ;p Time for a hillside root cellar build ;) I like the shelves the natural color. I love how yall organized it by color.
Oh my !!! What a beautiful sight. Every girl's dream !
Looks great! You guys did an awesome job
Thank you, can't wait to see what you do on your root celler
Awesome!
Very nice. The fruits of your labor nicely organized and accessible.
Watching this for the first time as I am up potting starts....and ur middle shelf does still look cute as u have it here!
It looks great Rachel! Lot of work just loading those shelves!
I love it!!! IF you paint the front of it with chalk board paint you can write what is on that shelf and area but also be able to change it if need be.
Go to the dollar tree to get your liner. They have cute stuff and works great I used the clear on my pantry shelves.
Using a big electric roaster for your tomatoes!! 🤯🤯 why haven’t I ever thought about that?!
I use it for everything big batch, currently have 4 chicken carcasses going in it making more broth
I have two. It doesn't heat the house up as much on a hot day. If it is still to hot, you can put them plug themo in outside and keep all the heat out side.
Wow! I need a Todd to make me some shelves! :) What a great job!
Super nice! I wouldn't change a thing :)
Wonderful job you two!! Just found you guys today! We are moving to Michigan at some point this year. I love how you made a area for the appliances. I'm going to keep that and contact paper in mind when we build ours!
Oh cool, where are you moving from and do you know what area in Michigan you are moving to?
Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing!!
Awe, I have pantry envy🥰
Have that same old canner I found on e-bay. Love it!
This is my dream😍compliments
It. looks amazing I have total pantry envy.
looks great,! congratulations. now you guys need to eat some of that food! lol
Beautiful job. Wish I had that space.
You guys did a fantastic job. Congrats!
Had to wait to watch until after I got out of work. ☹️☹️☹️
Wow!!!! Love your new pantry!!!!! Looking great. Enjoy.
Thank you!!!
The pantry looks absolutely gorgeous 😍!!! Just stumbled across your channel today. New Subbie!!!!
Awe yeah!! Go check out the video to see what's coming in the garden now, filling this pantry back up, woohoo. Happy to have you here
How thick is the plywood?
Very nice! Hello from Montana. New sub here. We just recently built a root cellar and I love it!
My step sisters live in Billings. Welcome and happy to have you to our channel
Great job! I think most everyone's pantry would be somewhat different because everyone's house is different :-)
Very true, what makes perfect sense for one person might not work for another
Absolutely love it! Y’all did a great job! 💞
Nice job...thx 4 the tips on how 2 build the shelves...i am building something similar w/a countertop bar 4 my bar stools n my brkfast nook...i love the look of the canning jars, vintage caniaters & vintage kitchen tools
Good luck with your build!
Outstanding!!! Hoping that these will bring years of happiness to you and your family!!!
Me too!!

My jar storage area is 6ft x 8ft x 24in. If I ever completely fill that then I'll need an intervention 😂

I say it's absolutely beautiful! We have the same type of walls in our basement...so hubby and I are inspired by what you guys have done :0) The chalk writing is a great idea!! Will you store your syrup down there too? ENJOY
Yes after I can it
I was wondering what size screws he used?
Wow! It’s beautiful.
I have been waiting for the time I could watch this and not be distracted, I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!! LOVE IT !!
Oh I'm glad you like it, I'm still so happy with it!
I love to can and fill up my pantry shelves too. MY problem is we can't eat it fast enough to keep canning like I have been. Oh well. Guess I cut back a couple years. Know anybody that wants the old fashioned 10 day soak sweet pickles? Lol

It helps to have crated with a lot of holes, for ventilation.
It looks wonderful awesome work

Yes I definitely need to invest in more half gallon jars!

That looks amazing, you guys! I'd leave the wood just as is, no paint or paper. I have similar shelving and I am definitely loving them.
Great!!
Absolutely beautiful setup, Rachel!!! So happy for you :)
Thank you
They are beautiful. But I have found out since I started canning in 2017 that the longer you can the more storage you will need. But from what I see you still have enough room for more shelves.
That's definitely true and the exact reason I needed a larger pantry
Store empty canning jars upside down to keep spiders out of them. Come summer it’s much nicer to prep jars without having to swab out bugs.
That's a good tip
Oh how fun! All the best with your build!
In your “cute” area with the curtains, I noticed you have a vintage pressure cooker. I have one but I’m afraid to use it. Have you used yours?
nope haven't used it
It looks amazing!!
I absolutely LOVE it. There's only one thing I would have done differently and that is... I would have put it in my house 🤣. Well done y'all, well done.
Haha, that would be a great improvement, lol
The pantry looks great. But I what find just beautiful is all the preserved that you have on hand. I have never canned before but watching your videos is very inspiring and I would like to try it some day. First thing I need is a canner lol.
Oh do it Andrea, start with something easy and cost affordable like carrots. It's so rewarding to shop from your own stores with food your confident in feeding your family
That is a beautiful pantry.
Looks great. Very nice.
That looks awesome! Love it!
As we get ready to build our house, I love to see ideas on how to do different things. Your new pantry has given me many ideas! We are excited about our new build but so very sad that means no canning this year as we have no room in our tiny rental. Looking forward to next year!
Also, I adore the canning lids hanging. So cute!
I had a whole Pinterest page dedicated to my future homestead before we had our place 😉 it's do fun to dream
I love your new pantry!!!! So jealous of the basement (I grew up in KS & now live in OK & still hate that basements are not something you want here usually - something about the clay & water issues😷😢😭😳). Someday I want to have a pantry like that!
