Trying to Apply this effect to a "quarterfoil" shape for use in a cathedral. Having trouble getting the full volume, it seems to completely blacken half of the shape no matter what adjustments ive made. To reddit i go!!
I ran into the same problem initially as well, i found switching back to object mode afterwards updated the volume. Also using cycles instead of eevee did it
Emission then plug it into material output the add color ramp and plug it into emission color then make sure you change linear to ease and add 1 more controller and then add in a gradient texture then if node wrangler is enabled press ctrl+t and change the texture coordinate remove uv and plug it into generated back to the color ramp you can change it to any color :) (haaaa wat a long type)

Volumetric lighting is so powerful. My renders will never be the same. You should also look into light textures.

But seems like is not really fake. It uses VOLUME still :)
nope, no volume in it. you can check with volume passes and it won't be there!!

U didn't have to do that. Using the shadow from the window is enough. I've used that technique without playing around with lots of nodes...
Shadow do not cast god rays.. it can project shape but not god rays. This is actually a good trick for specific scene and less volumetric computation
that has nothing to do with shadows

I find out that if u don’t deform the object before u add the colour ramp it will be works
