I have a strange interpretation of the ending, not sure if it makes sense. How I saw it is that Sister Paxton did die when she was praying, then she saw the butterfly, and when the butterfly disappeared it meant that she was brought back to life (assuming that the church elder maybe came back, ambulance, etc).
That’s really interesting. When I was watching I interpreted as she made it out of the house then died outside in the snow from her injury and the butterfly was like her soul leaving her body or something like that. I like yours better cause it means she lives lol
@@benaronow227 Monarch butterflies in ancient Mexico were considered the reincarnation of our beloved people/ ancestors. They are messengers from "beyond death". At other religions , butterflies are also related to reincarnation.
@@jliu3991 she definitely died. There was no escape to begin with. Control! The director did an amazing job. The butterfly never disappeared. It was never there to begin with. The director gave a clue with the cell phone. It never changed from no service. The window was the fantasy. It was too high to reach and the window had a cover. Why wouldn't she call 911 right away? She only saw the butterfly while the audience saw the truth. Relating to her previous comment about the butterfly. God fulfilled her wish allowing her to die with her faith. Something the owner tried to avoid. Proving that faith is real which is why he tried to stab her throat to stop her prayers. He could have stabbed her on the leg stomach again. But he could not believe that god would save her and then he got killed by the other girl. Faith is the true religion. Not control!
1) 1st chick died when she got her throat cut - she never came back from the dead or wasn’t fully dead- she was dead 2) The 2nd chick died when stabbed in the stomach and while transitioning it was in her mind the other chick finished him off just like she thought she escaped - 3) they all died in the house, he did, too, next to her. *** It was actually a smart ending for the "suspension of disbelief;" a term we used in writing - When I majored in literature and writing composition that was hugely emphasized… it keeps the mind of the reader/audience wondering - and it questions the the basis of the movie: belief and disbelief… But, the foreshadowing and elements were in the movie- the fact the girl who died last mentioned prior she would like to see a butterfly when dying or something like that, and also we see a butterfly in the home… But Dante’s inferno, the 9 levels of hell, played a great emphasis, too, as it was depicted in the library image when the last girl tries to escape before dying, signifying her going down more and more into his levels of hell in her attempt to escape (the home where they got trapped and died)
This is the most decent breakdown yet. Paxton is dead that house was completely sealed there was never an exit in the back. She lost a lot of blood and they said when you have a near-death experience you lose a lot of oxygen and blood making you see things you shouldn't. She was stabbed in the stomach bleeding to her death and in her last moment she saw herself escaping. Only to realize when she saw the butterfly she got scared and knew that god heard her. So she was able to die with her faith. Something most Christians can't do.
That thing about hugh grant talking about ending was really interesting. I really felt the second ending. Like that mr reeds never found personal connection with god and in the end was weak and frigtened when sister was strong and confident in prayer. This movie could have easily been dunking on stupid peoole who believe in nonsense but was actually thoughtful meditation on religion and belief I liked it very much. Hugh grant was excellent and i really liked the sister who got killed first possibly because her way of thinking and believing was closer to my own.
I mean, I get the gist although he's completely insane. People often say they believe in this or that, but lack truth faith when down to the bare bones of the matter. True faith or enlightenment (whatever your jam may be) means more than lip service. When it comes to the nitty gritty, many aren't as sure as they say they are.
I grew up mormon (I don't practice anymore obviously) but I absolutely loved this movie. Made me think a ton ! I think it has to do with the different circles of Hell. I just haven't mapped it out yet. But limbo (trapped in the living room) then the dark hallways, then the study. There was all these layers to the maze of the house
I noticed a few minor contradictions, but ONE BIG point/question. When all is said the heretic Reed is asked why he is so controlling and he replies: "Why do you let me?" His answer is referring to the 8 billion population that chooses to be controlled, seeks it, sacrifices everything for it. WHY? Since early youth I noticed this, asked about it, and got no rational answer, only appeals to imagination or personal emotions. I noticed the particular form it took was usually determined by the society/and or the family. But still, WHY? I was influenced by my family, but not in the same way. I took all the good advice and rejected the bad, e.g., my mother was superstitious, which I strongly rejected, even identified as a mental problem which horrified me. Sometimes it was like living with a crazy person. My father was not superstitious but he wouldn't advise me against a specific belief usually, instead he told me the more important a decision, the more important it is to think it over and decide for yourself. That was a little disconcerting at first, then "I thought about being independent, tried it, reached my own conclusion about religion, and I felt proud that I had reached a deep personal commitment to my self." As the years passed, I would get only one side of an argument, which made finding out the truth much more difficult, but I did it, despite the propaganda. At 12, living in the ghetto with gangs, I figured out the biggest gang was the government and was as immoral as all gangs are. When I stated this, I was called an anarchist, and no one had ever pitched this politics to me. I had only heard the opposite argument for authority, never against it. But, like being sold religion in church, I got only one side and still thought it out and reached the truth. I had become an atheist. The "Heretic" doesn't answer "Why do you let me?" except to say, "It makes me feel good, e.g., safe." Is ignorance so painful that you must alleviate it with a drug, e.g., a superstition?
The Heretic sounds like a good movie. The ending. I'm still trying to understand better. I will need to watch the video again. To be sure. I understand.
i didn’t hate the movie but i didn’t love it either. what would have been better is that he did find some super old religion and he needs the girl to help him call forth some old lovecraftian like monster that he thinks is god. the prophet part could have been a believer in the old religion and he found her and kidnapped her using her to figure out how to summon what he thinks is god and she tells him he needs a virgin sacrifice and this is why he captures christian girls hoping to find a girl who is pure and will be a worthy sacrifice. the house has been turned into a locked down maze that the girls have to go through with different test in each room to not only be part of summoning the monster but also to test the girls to see if either of them is pure and is a worthy sacrifice. something like this where theres something actually there a real monster a crazy story not just a old man who’s obsessed with control and basically telling people they are wrong and he is right. i think the movie was going to be slightly different from even his interview of them filming scenes completely differently. the house being this super over complex design when all he really needed was some deadbolts on some doors would have worked fine but the house redesign and the model of the house with the little piece’s just doesn’t really add up seems like there was supposed to be more story than what we got.
My take on the movie is that it is a metaphor for the last days as described in the bible. The women in the cages represent those people that worship the image of the beast and accept the mark. All that reject it, staying true to their faith in Jesus, are put to death. Read Revelation 13.

I guess my agnostic self was incredulous and thought Sister Paxton died.
Yes, as she never came back to kill him - she was already dead- that was in the mind of the other girl when she died
The pastor coming to check on them excalty when he did really helped the body swap. Perhaps they would've tried to pull the rug regardless though.
