I so agree with you that “self care” is actually really important in keeping your mental health “healthy”. I am 71 years of age and learned when I turned 40 and experienced some serious health issues just how important it is to take time for yourself 2 - 3 times per year. For me that means going away with three of my closest girlfriends and spending quality time with them in places / hotels like the Balmoral where you are made to feel totally spoilt and where you can relax and experience a little bit of luxury for a day or two. Life goes by so very quickly and you are truly blessed to have learnt this at such a young age Nicolas 🥰
5 years ago when I found out through DNA testing that I was, in addition to Great Britain, I am Irish and Scottish. My bucket list became a trip to both. After saving and surviving the pandemic I am coming to Ireland first then Inverness and Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was supposed to be my 75th Birthday wish but will miss it by 9 months. I would love to see the Balmoral? I love seeing you look good and being happy.

I went through the same process you did many years ago, wanting a more simple, decluttered life. I started with downsizing, reading books on Ikigai, Art of simple living and learning that less is definitely more. It is truly life changing. There are some minimalist movements which also espouse to the simple living philosophy. Ultimately the physical environment starts to merge with the soul an d you fine your more at peace as one. I have decided to view my massive collection of "stuff" - fancy sets of bar glasses, salt and pepper shakers egg coddlers, and all sorts of different collectible knick knacks - I'm now considering the collection as a journey. I enjoyed collecting things, but once I'm done it's ok for the journey to end and for me to part with things. I'm 56 years old and finding that I don't want to spend time dusting and don't want to spare space to store so much stuff. As a Danish teak minimalist, I certainly understand why you would want to declutter. Dusting taking forever when you have too many tchotchkes lying about. Same with stacks of books. A proper bookcase or cabinet organizes and simplifies the things we truly love.

I completely agree with you, my taste has changed throughout the years as my life has changed. When I was younger with less funds, my decor was very simple, then it changed to comfortable large furniture and floral red/gold decor. And now, in my 40s, my taste is more modern with whites and grays and a navy blue and almost minimalistic. I love that you are sharing the changes in your life! I never hear anyone talk about embracing change and being excited about it. I am happy for you and its fun to watch you learn, grow, and change. I think it is a good idea, when practicing self-care, to do like you did and take a short break from our 4-legged children so that one may focus on themselves. You are fortunate to have a trusted friend for Sophie to stay with. I must also comment that I think your home feels very classic and comfortable. Yes, do make sure that you're not just going through a phase before getting rid of things you've collected over the years. They sometimes help us to feel more rooted and grounded. I feel confident you'll make the right choice.

I enjoyed voyeuristically joining you at The Balmoral. Lovely place! I understand your desire to simplify some decor. I have done it and am so glad I did. I learned a tip a few years ago that might be helpful. For the items you’re debating, put them in a quarantine bin for three months. You can always retrieve them if you change your mind but you get to experiment with having less. I wish I could be one of those people who changes out accessories throughout the home every few months (my high school best friend’s mom did - and had shelves full in the basement from which to “shop.”) But I’m not. A new wreath on the door seasonally is as ambitious as this retiree gets.
I’m thinking along the same lines about decluttering and simplifying my life from home decor to personal items and clothing. It’s extremely overwhelming to even think about it… However, the burden of the current upkeep is getting to me. After the last two years’ world events, I, too have changed and am longing (and ready) for a sleeker and streamlined lifestyle. Thank you for a relaxing video and wish you a lovely weekend!

Oh the hotel was beautiful and your stay looked wonderful!! Will be ready to go through your changes as I am changing my decor also, just purchased 2 new chairs and having my couch recovered!! It’s so exciting. Not sure what to do with my assesories as those will change also changing the colors!!

I think it is a good idea, when practicing self-care, to do like you did and take a short break from our 4-legged children so that one may focus on themselves. You are fortunate to have a trusted friend for Sophie to stay with. I must also comment that I think your home feels very classic and comfortable. Yes, do make sure that you're not just going through a phase before getting rid of things you've collected over the years. They sometimes help us to feel more rooted and grounded. I feel confident you'll make the right choice.

I enjoyed voyeuristically joining you at The Balmoral. Lovely place! I understand your desire to simplify some decor. I have done it and am so glad I did. I learned a tip a few years ago that might be helpful. For the items you’re debating, put them in a quarantine bin for three months. You can always retrieve them if you change your mind but you get to experiment with having less. I wish I could be one of those people who changes out accessories throughout the home every few months (my high school best friend’s mom did - and had shelves full in the basement from which to “shop.”) But I’m not. A new wreath on the door seasonally is as ambitious as this retiree gets.
That is a great piece of advice - will certainly do that before selling/giving away. Thank you!
I’m thinking along the same lines about decluttering and simplifying my life from home decor to personal items and clothing. It’s extremely overwhelming to even think about it… However, the burden of the current upkeep is getting to me. After the last two years’ world events, I, too have changed and am longing (and ready) for a sleeker and streamlined lifestyle. Thank you for a relaxing video and wish you a lovely weekend!
