This natural hair community is just one big contradiction!!
You really just have to do what works for Your particular hair. Each individual head of hair is different, even if it is a similar texture to another person's head of hair.
for sure. I stay for the entertainment
Facts
IKr half of them dont know what they are about i be laughing😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
right?! like, how is one thing good for a minute, and then bad the next!?
I wore braids for 4 years STRAIGHT literally back to back and completely left my hair alone and it grew to waist length no real damage yet my cousin keeps them in for 2 weeks and all her edges came out and hair thinned . My best friend wore braids consecutively and her hair grew out thick as well. So its All RELATIVE! AND PERSONAL !
Right! I do two strand twists all the time and some people say they can’t leave theirs in long bc their hair will lock up. Lol! Not mine🤷🏾♀️
We all have different journeys when it comes to all this hair stuff.. My hair grew to waist length with back to back “protective styling” over the course of 5yrs.. Then I lost my long time stylist Nov 2020, and had to find another.. In the meanwhile I went back to the only styling I know which is wash and gos.. I thought I had a grasp on my natural hair, in regards to moisture and low tension etc. because I’d always been natural and I had length retention, no thinning spots, and such.. I had a full head of hair for sure, but when I found my BGC suggested stylist in Oct 2021 and was shown the difference in my hair texture.. How there was a clear line of demarcation from where my hair that had been protected all those years started and my years worth of new growth ended.. My cuticle was shot on the hair that had been “protected”.. It was curly long and thick, but it was also very dry and frizzy.. In direct comparison with my own new growth.. I let her cut all that ish off and I now have chin length hair while curly, but it is the healthiest it has ever been.. I’m about 2 months post big chop and couldn’t be more happy.. I always say we don’t know what we don’t know, and I had no idea my curly thick long hair had any issues.. I just thought I had dryer frizzier hair by nature.. And couldn’t have dreamed my hair would possibly be as shiny soft and defined as it is these days.. Oh, and it’s GROWING.. “Watered hair definitely grows”, is the saying my mom used to say to me.. I didn’t get it as a kid, but now with my twice a week wash days (my shower, shampoo, condition, and style takes about 1.5hr including sitting under my dryer so no big doing as often as I want), I think I get what she was saying now.. 🙏🏽
@@chiquitafederico296 I wouldn't have let that hairdresser cutt my hair off. Most hairdressers are too scissor happy that's why I stopped going to the hairdresser. And some get jealous of long hair. I feel she could have reversed any dryness and frizz you had without cutting all of it off. She just found a way to get more money.
@@tracyi9152 I'm sure the treatments would have cost far more.. And I'm officially team health over legnth.. Also, ain't no way there was any hair envy, her hair is gorgeous.. And without any costly treatments mine has the same luster sheen shine body bounce and curl as hers.. I know for a fact that cuticle damage isn't reversible.. Hence why we can't turn relaxed hair back to natural.. I had a whole year with my hair before I went to the BGC stylist.. And did get to have a couple professional bond treatments done in that time, because my girlfriends mother is a cosmetologist.. My "protected" hair had an entirely different texture to it, for lack of a better descriptive.. This new head of hair I have post corrective/big chop, feels the same as when I was a teen.. And thankfully my hair grows like a weed.. Its even darker than the sandy brown hair I'd had.. So there was no point in me holding on to that deadweight.. I know I'll be back to waist legnth within a couple years.. Except this time, with the head of hair of my dreams.. I now know what my hair needs, and how to truly care for it.. And understand how them oils and butters if not removed fully and properly so hair can obtain moisture combined with the use of protective styling for my head of hair is a horrible formula.. It is wonderful if you have been able to do the protective styling without harm to your strands.. But that just was not the case for me.. And I'd rather not take the chances and sacrifice another head of hair, so I'll stick to my 1.5hr regimen twice a week.. And trust the process for my new growth journey..
This right here! It’s not a “one shoe fits all” when it comes to hair. It’s about being patient and finding out what works for YOU.
I've been wearing protective styles for years... instead of my hair thinning with age...it thickens... I am all natural...no chemicals at all including color and those protective styles are working great for me... I also have my edges.
I thought that braids did not work. I braid it last month on the 30th of October and just took them out yesterday and I saw an inch growth it grow faster than it would being out. I used that hair grease called triple gro and it gro my hair just don't pull the hair to tight on the edges and you'll be fine.
Same
@@portadoradesugloria5639 ditto!
To each their own, protective styles done correctly can yield good benefits, my hair grew like crazy with them
Yes! I wish people would stop making videos like this when something doesn't work FOR THEM. Everyone is different as far as porosity, density, genetics, growth rate, etc. So, when something doesn't work for someone, it doesn't apply to everyone. I wish people would understand that.
@@deepdarkmelanin Exactly I've never had that issues my hair been growing with box braids. Plus I wash my hair and use organic oils. It all depends on the Woman but, ive never had issues with box braids.
Plus I wear my box braids for 2-3 months and I do my regular hair wash and oil routine.
My hair been growing a lot with box braids.
EXACTLY MY HAIR BEEN GROWING .
@@shaylanewlife I also believe that going to other people to do your hair could slow up the growth process, but that's just me ig
@@tigress_4393 That is true too but I only go to this one shop. I don't let a lot of people do my hair.
I personally love protective styles. Since the beginning of my natural hair journey those are all I do, and I've had such great success with them. I never thought I could grow hair this long and healthy. I do styles with added hair in the winter and protective styles with just my natural hair in the summer.
I think having success while doing no oils or butter is largely dependent on your climate. I live in Alberta and the winters here get way colder and dryer than Ontario (I mean negative 40 degree Celsius cold) and I personally don't see wash and go's without oils or butters working here. My hair would instantly dry out as soon as I leave the house.
I do agree with not leaving you styles in for more than 4 weeks ( that's typically what I do), and this winter I want to get into washing my hair every 2 weeks with the style in.
Love your channel ❤️
The effects that climate has is so true!!!
I live in New Mexico, drier weather all around and cool to cold temperatures at night and in winter. Heavy butter and frequent moisturizing (not water) were my life savers.
i don’t really see what climate has to do with using no butters and oils. i live in a cold area and i only use mousse for my twist outs and braid outs and my hair feels fine.
I also live in Alberta and the no oils no butters thing + washing my hair weekly (even multiple times a week) changed my hair's health for the better. Most times people experience problems when they use shampoos that are too drying, using a moisturizing shampoo really helped me.
I hate that term "protective style". It's just a regular hairstyle.
I genuinely feel like this theory depends on YOUR HAIR & CLIMATE because some of us retain length better through protective styles and just prefer to do them because we want to. This is your hair journey if butters & oils work for your hair then keep doing what you do❤️
Listen! I'm convinced that braiding extensions does nothing but suck the moisture, rub away at and weaken the strands of my fine 4c hair and cause split ends and breakage. I've not used braiding hair for years, stick to simple styles with my own hair only and wash, deep condition and moisturise weekly... and my hair has been it's best it's ever been! For a style "switch up", I choose afro clip-in extensions or an afro u-part wig ONLY.
I think fine strands suffers the most and people don’t realize it. You can retain length with protective styles (I have) but at what cost? Thank you for sharing ❤️
@@JennJackson yes! Thank you.
Definitely, I've only used braiding hair once and the process of doing the style caused so much breakage. After a week my scalp and hair was so dry, flaky and itchy. I'm definetly not doing that again.
Yup - this has been my experience as well and I have thick 4c hair. but after years and years of braids, hair got thinner and edges too. That braiding/kanekalon hair doesn't allow for your hair to be properly moisturized. Those with already dry hair like myself..it's just no good
SAME, fine hair here. braids completely damaged my hair
Everyone’s hair is different. I’m surprised to hear half of what she’s saying bc I def grew my neck length hair to the middle of my back with protective styles and not touching my hair for long periods of time. I have the most hair loss when my hair isn’t protected.
Lowkey I've been waiting on a video that says this. Protective styles grew my hair up to a point but they aren't the "style it and leave it" dream I imagined.I would have box braids or faux locs in my head for most of the year and eventually after a few years the weight and intensity of those styles began to thin the literal follicles from carrying the weight. Crochet braids also created tension on my scalp. I don't think all protective styles should be "thrown away" but I think their over use is definitely a problem that I wish people spoke about more instead of describing them as a sure success for all hair textures. Especially if it stops you from really getting in there and learning your hair needs. Wearing my hair loose and then eventually moving to sisterlocks has changed my life because it no longer feels possible to hide any "hair problems" that have come up from years of over-reliance on protective styling and I have had to navigate by learning how to care for my hair.
I love protective styles❤. Box braids grew my hair out of the awkward lenght and when I reached brastrap I started doing mini braids/twists, with my own hair, which have also helped tremendously. I usually leave my styles for 2 months, washing every 2 weeks, and spray aloe vera juice or oregano tea to avoid itchy scalp since they're antibacterial, and seal my strands with olive oil, shea butter and the ends with castor oil since they're the oldest. I don't oil my scalp only spray liquids and I redo the edges when they are too messy.
Great tips. I'm keeping my twists in for 3 weeks for now because I'm scared my hair will loc. Have you had this issue keeping them in for 2 months?
What liquid do you use?
I so agree with you.
I thought more people were finally beginning to realize that health trumps length. Most people disagreeing are only talking about the benefits for length retention. You can retain length and still have hair that isn't truly healthy.
Also if you ever see this (lol) please make a video about the "all hair is different" claims :( All hair is different truly, but if professionals who have had decades of experience, with multiple porosities, curl patterns, hair textures, lengths, and densities can confidently recommend the same regimen to everyone, with countless success stories to back them up, then the "differences" may not necessarily be what we think they are.
I'm DONE with long term protective styles on my fine natural hair, but anything over a month is really asking for trouble. I'll just do my chunky braids under a headwrap or wig from now on.
SheRea are you done with braids? For real? I do my own whenever I do braids. I almost went and got my braids done, but I didn't want to make the LONG trip to another state, lol! Plus she was charging a ridiculous amount of money...I don't even care about the latest techniques either. As long as I can do the basic, I am satisfied.
@@marianb2530 Yup, i’m done with braids
@@SheReaDelSol oh ok
protective styles are important for lenght retention aka keeping hair from beakage and manipulation. as long as theyre done correctly and without stress, you will keep the hair you scalp gives you on your head 1-3 month styles r good but font go overboard
I have thick BUT fine hair and I'm realizing that these protective styles aren't really good for me unless it's my own hair and this no raw oils/butters works great for my hair
It seems that this regime works great for fine haired people 🤔
Loose protective styles along with oils and butters have my hair at waist length.
I’ve come to the conclusion that protective styles weren’t working for me. They looked good while they were in but the chronic dehydration and the synthetic fibers causing damage to my cuticle caused breakage long term.
Exactly
Yup
I want to see a video on how your hair has changed since you stopped using oils and butters!
You got it!
also can you add a list of products that you used
There’s literally a whole series on her channel
Great video!! Protective styles has been working for me since i done my big chop , two years later after my hair grew out completely i now struggle with breakage and thinning after i do a protective style , SO I STOPPED!!
My hair is fine, so protective styles just always lead to breakage, my hair has never been worse than when I tried a sew in, and when I tried box braids! And, I’m allergic to braiding hair. So, I just 🙅🏽♀️
Have you tried wash the braiding hair before installing with acv
It depends for me I avoid extension styles( ie crochet, box braid etc).I stick to conrows and glueles wigs
I'm starting to think I'm allergic to braiding hair too.
I have fine hair too n my mom had fine hair too but our hair thrives when we do protective styles my hair is always in box braids n it’s become thicker n the growth is amazing.
And please do a video on how damaging hair coloring is 😝
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I hadn’t thought of that until I saw your comment.
I definitely agree with braiding your own hair. I’ve been doing so for years. I’ve grown out 3 big chops with braids. I wash weekly, moisturize every other day, and redo my edges after 3 weeks.
Also, get humidifiers for the house for winter, saves my skin
Protective styles helped me to retain length and it’s good to give our hair a break
I’m so glad that someone finally had the nerve to say it! We were told that these various ‘styles ‘ were protective! That’s statement is what a lot of us told to cover everything for everybody! In the comments right next to each other, some folks swear by them while others say just the opposite! So how can that be? Cause we all different! Some of us put our hair in braids and just leave them ! Some folks may refresh them like clockwork! WE are all DIFFERENT! There is NOT a one style/ procedure fits all style! Even the hairs on our heads can be different! I have tried the no butter but I gotta tell y’all it’s not for me! But that’s me! I’m only one sista in this universe! I will NEVER tell anyone to only do one thing an get great results! None of of can or should! All l’m saying ladies is life is a smorgasbord! Take what works best for here and some from there! If it works, you stick with it! Follow your common sense about what works for y’all, the individual! Please stay safe and strong! Live long and prosper, y’all!
Exactly. I disliked the video because of the title
And protective styles don’t necessarily mean extensions. You can just do twists or braids with your own hair- and how are those damaging your hair?? With your own hair it’s even easier to moisturize your hair in protective styles.
I like that part "coz we don really need to protect our hair from anything " i have been asking myself that question like forever.. like why do i need to hide my hair and say am protecting it.. as in how..?? I mean does it mean God gave me the hair that is supposed to be hiden for it to grow and be healthy..?? Nah i don't think so. If i really need to protect my hair i will braid my own hair and not put on extensions. I will do an extension type of protective style only when i want a different look and not doing it thinking my hair will grow faster. I personally can't leave my hair braided for more than two week. And again thats just m i know everyone is different. My hair is healthy and at mid back length without depending on protective styles.
Just saying do u.. find what works best for u. We all are different
I wore medium size braids for 6 wks, took them out and went got some more for another 6 wks and I see that was not a good idea. My edges started thinning again. For me, twists only. Love your videos.
Protective styles grow my hair so much 😭
Hair growth happens on the inside - anything we do on the outside doesn't "grow" our hair. Reducing manipulation allows to length retention.
@@JennJackson & the use of protective styles allows low manipulation which increases growth. This is why I feel like it’s a good way for my hair to really flourish 😁
@@justjazmo you mean help you retain length? Because our hair grows the same whether or not we do protective style or not.
Mine too.
This is literally a to-MAY-to….to-MAH-to conversation. Jen is politically correct, yes but as long as we understand that low manipulation is the root cause of the outcome it’s all good.
Wow! This was VERY good! Sis out here saving edges! There are numerous black women out here in these UA-cam streets balding while knowing that their "protective" styles are the cause. Their hair is telling them that if you don't want me then I won't stay. Welp, maybe they will listen to you Miss Jenn. You explained it quite simplistic! Kudos!
No lies told 💯
I think what I like about these kinds of videos in protective styles is that showing one thing(whatever it is) is not for everyone. But what is more important to understand is that people can and do make things that are healthy into something unhealthy. This happens with ANYTHING you don't do right. People wear protective styles, and then braid tight, use too much gels and drying products, cease doing basic things, etc. That's not protective styling fault, but human being fault. Know what works for your hair, including your hair's texture, and know basic health care. We are are own culprits when we don't know and understand that.
For afro texture hair braiding and twisting your hair are traditional styles, they allow women to add dimensions to their hair and retain length. However, the styles created use the hair growing from your own scalp. Anytime you step away from nature you risk damage.
Im getting braids tomorrow ! Video came at the best time. Gonna remember this
The thing about protective styling is how tight it's put in. No matter what style if it's not put in properly it will never work.
I tell people all the time, long term protective styles are just not it. Figuring out your moisture cycle, when it comes to your hair is impossible, if your hair is braided away! You should also make sure, your ends are trimmed before these styles as well. Lastly, if you aren’t clarifying and doing a deep treatment to keep the hair balanced is important. Consistency works y’all!
Why should you ensure your hair is trimmed under braids?
@@teeeee9174 because my love it’s called a protective style! The fibers of the hair you’re braiding with, are already a bit rough on the hair! Especially if you have a tight braided, or the hair wasn’t cleansed and prepped properly! So add split ends on to that, and it’s a wrap!
I realized rather late that some protective hair styles were actually damaging my hair follicles. In hindsight, it wasn't worth it at all.
Do what’s best for your hair. Stick to your own convictions ❤️
I use yarn for my extensions for that exact reason. I find 100% acrylic yarn works wonderfully, comes in many colours, and is inexpensive for 2 balls. They also can be reused more easily than normal extensions.
what kind of styles do you do with the yarn?
@@dothodzomasole7956 any style one does with Marley or kanekolon hair. I do a range of twists and braids. I usually start with a braid then change into a twist after 1-2" of braiding.
Can do threading, wrapping, twists, braids, cornrows/plaits, canebraids, feed in braids, tree braids etc. Literally any style you'd add extension hair, replace with yarn. And yeah, can do crochet styles too.
I like yarn locs!!!
Fellow Northlander (Canada) here. yeah our winters are no joke🥶 & I’m high porosity so I’m taking my oils & butters to the grave sis 😆
Here are some tips that worked for my waist length hair (ie. length+volume retention) & why none of this applied to me:
1. I install my own styles (trust issues😅), mostly twists. I only do jumbo or medium sections & I ain’t slicking, laying not a damn kink 🤷🏾♀️
2. I braid my own hair most of time. I add extensions every 2-3 installs bc it requires more manipulation = more breakage
3. I don’t keep anything in my head for more than 14 days & I have a 7-days break after. idc what style in whatever season, it’s gotta go🙅🏾♀️
4. I have set (2)days in the week to moisturize my hair, wether it’s in a protective style or not. No oil/butter, just aloe gel+essential oils on the scalp & a leave-in in my hair. So my routine never really changes & I don’t get lazy
5. I got both my prep/install & takedown routines on lock. Get to know your hair, what it loves & be nice to it ☺️
Most importantly sis, no style for whatever occasion/event is worth the stress of balding 😜
Hope this helps someone 🖤
Hey what aloe gel do you use please ? Fellow Canadian here . I’ve been using my same routine since fall but as snow has been hitting the ground . My hair seems to be needing more moisture
Your regime sounds a lot like mine. 💙my hair is waist length too!
@@zammieking1509 I use Aloe gel by the brand “Lily of the Desert” or gel straight from the Aloe plant whenever possible. Oh btw film-forming humectants (ie. Aloe gel, xanthan gum, slippery elm, etc.) in my moisturizers we’re game-changing for my high porosity hair when I came to moisture retention, especially during harsh weather. YTuber Afope put me on game, I tweaked her method to suit me but omg 🤯. Here’s the link (ua-cam.com/video/EYbQBiSskx0/v-deo.html). Give it a try & browse her channel too, she’s a gem 💎

I think it would help the discourse if we started to refer to all these styles as *alternative* styles and not protective styles... (or simply by their names)
The only real style that is potentially protective is one where your ends are tucked away, no tension, no added weight, no friction and you can wash and condition on your regular schedule (i.e. a loosely tied low bun, maybe wrapped with a silk cloth). The vast majority of styles we consider protective have an element that can actually damage the hair/follicle at worst and do nothing at best...cause your hair is gonna grow regardless. Hence alternatives... to the way hair comes out of our heads naturally.
I think we also have to be honest with ourselves that many of us got or did alternatives styles because they were "easier" and lower maintenance than our natural hair ...but 1. Is that really true? 2. At what cost?
Well said
Amen. How many people do you see wearing their own hair without extensions these days? Of course there's a segment of people who may have experienced hair loss due to illness or medication, but to see elementary school girls with these extensions at such a young age is terrible. I feel like they don't have a chance to see their hair's potential.
@@oneflowerlover I was this girl. After I passed clips and bubbles age I was never sent to school without braids.
I was always natural (as is my whole family) but we didn't get to wear our hair out. Braids was the "easy" way and growing up we sure as hell didn't call them protective styles... we called them braids. Lol. I didn't know what my hair looked like until high-school... and it didn't look good until after high-school lolol.
As adults all of us wear our hair free now in curls or free-form with some locs. And of course it grows healthy, long and with elasticity
@@sart1348 We live and learn! Thank you for sharing your story.
I have never had braids with extensions because I knew it would be damaging for MY hair. I throw in a dozen plaits and wear a lined beanie and call it a day. It works well and I have easy access to my scalp.
With the cold temperature in Canada, i mostly do protectives hairstyles and keep them for not more than 3-4 weeks. Btw, your hair, your makeup 🔥🔥👌🏾
YOU DID IT!! "It's your girl, Aye, Aye. It's your girl...Jenn J." Love the them song.🤩
Yesss I wore protective styles ALL OF 2020 and I followed all the steps to keep my hair healthy underneath did EVERYTHING right and my hair grew long but thinned out!! It’s all relative but for me my fine strands weren’t with it no matter WHAT I did . Listen to your own hair , protective styles Ike braids, twists aren’t for us all
But on that note my super high porosity hair THRIVES on oils and butters especially! It’s crazy how diff each of our hair needs truly are!
Same thing for me. Sure I am retaining length but at what cost? People don't care though - length over everything -_-
Yes mine always grew long but really thin and alopaecia
Looking great! Love Vlogmas but that being said, don’t burn yourself out. Want all the Jenn J. goodness to be protected too 🙏🏽💕👏🏽
Thanks for the tips and all of your hard work! i am glad for your growth. I do love the hair vids and look forward to the vid on no butters/oils lessons learned.
Absolutely! That's why I also choose not do these protective stylings anymore. If I choose to have braids or twists, then only for a change of style, but will make sure to wash it. 😊
I mainly do wash and gos and twists, no matter the season. I typically washed my hair every two weeks but now I am a washing my hair weekly and I see the benefit of less tangling and my hair being more hydrated. My wash and gos and twists are cream only and I seal my ends with olive oil. I don't use mousse or gels.
Listen I’m sick of my natural hair. I’m about to get creamy crack again. I’m tired of doing sooooo much just to have my hair look decent. Constant blow drying, flat ironing, etc.
I’m tired!
You look gorgeous as always🔥 😍
Yes, please do a video on what you've noticed about your hair since stopping the raw oils and butters.
Yes, we definitely need the video on what you've discovered about your hair since you've stopped using oils and butters. We need it sis!!!
This is true for me too. I moved to Japan two years ago and had my hair in various protective styles with extensions for over a year and my edges paid the price. I had bald spots and my hair didn't look good. 5 months ago I decided to give protective styles with extensions a rest and now it's like I have a different head of hair. I'm never going back!!!!
How and why did you move to Japan? ( Asking as someone who is very interested in visiting/living in Japan) : ))
Also, Im very happy for you that your hair grew back healthy! I hope I can grow my hair thick and healthy again after so many braids!
1) You are beautiful!💙
2) I've learned something new about hair care. Winter isn't the season I typically like due to major moisture issues (for my hair and skin). I run straight to moisturizers (shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, Jamaican black Castor oil, Indian Kemp ... Any of these, since coconut oil isn't winter compatible). I strive not to use too much chemicals, either (hence reading the ingredients before purchase).💯
3) My hair has always grown longer and faster with braids - extensions or no extensions - it's a "superpower" of sorts. But now that's slowed down since the last time I did my wash routine (transitioning from Fall to Winter). I would've gotten a haircut at this time of year, too, but received a challenge to grow it out. Well, this will do in a warmer climate, not cold and dry.😭 So much to learn.

Just because something doesn't work fo you dont mean everybody else should "STOP", if it dont work for you fine but insisting that on everyone else sounds wrong, personally they do extremely well for my hair especially retaining lenghth, when it comes to natural hair styling and products work differently on people and you have to discover what works for you best, for e.g not everyone with low porosity uses light oils, their hair works well with thicker oils despite being low porosity so you cant insist to Stop using protective styles just cz they dont work for you, with proper care they actually working for a lot of people
I am not insisting, but simply providing updated information in the hair care space. Just because it works for you (and me too) doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. So many are suffering from the aftermath of protective styles and with all the misinformation out there when it comes to hair care, It’s important to discuss these topics.
Somebody’s mad
I admit the title is misleading but she’s not saying any of that. She’s just describing what work for her and why. Everything is a suggestion🤷🏽♀️
@@JennJackson it seems like you are insisting from the title of this video. You can present new information but your title is completely disregarding.
I tried protective styling mini twist on my natural hair for 5 years straight under my hijab and hair remained neck length. I then tried micro locs which was growing until I added extensions to it that weakens the root popping off. That was for a year. Then I started all over and wire protective styles braids extensions consecutively for 3 and a half years and hair weakens but grew but back didn’t grow pass 2 inches. Just front remaining at 6 inch so now I’m just wearing my Afro with weekly wash n go with idea to let it free form cuz I’ll just let my hair do itself. Give myself a break embrace the budding stage locking stages.
😳 Thanks for the heads up. As the sole caretaker of my daughters natural hair, protective styles are her favorite really. I'm shocked but very interested in hearing more.
I’ve been long term protective styling this whole year. I think your video is more about braids with additional hair, not really about protective styling. I don’t use added hair and wash my hair weekly with no issues and moisturize the hair.
I definitely feel like she's making it seems like her personal experience is universal. Because alopecia is a disorder, a hairstyle can't give you that. As someone with thick ass hair. Getting braids helps me keep it under control.
I would say weave because with braids you can moisturize and wash your hair..
your make up is so simple and divine
Hi Jen, are you wearing wash and goes every day now or do you switch up styles (e.g., twists, twistouts, and rollersets)?
I haven't used oils and butters since February, so it's almost been a year for me too. I never thought this could work for my coarse, high density hair but it's honestly the best thing I've done for my hair since going natural 8 years ago.
I stopped using oils in March, switching to botanical gels (camille rose curl maker) and my hair retains moisture so much better.
This is so interesting! I religiously protective style with no added extensions and my hair has FLOURISHED! I guess it all depends on the person 🤷🏿♀️
What kind of protective styles can you do without adding hair?
@@annettejohnson440 I would like to know this as well. Probably mini twists. I don't like them on me as they make me look too young. 😅
@@annettejohnson440 I usually flat twist and put it in an updo, wear it for 2 weeks and repeat. I bleached my whole head at home not so long ago like a big dummy and was shedding and breaking like crazy, my hair got so thin! Not no mo lol I swear by my routine!
I appreciate this video Jenn.👏🏾👏🏾
Love you Jenn!! Watch you a lot. You do some wonderful things with your hair! The title may have just been to draw people in but sounds very one sided and somewhat demanding. I wore twists in my hair for 2 months and braided synthetic hair into and past my real hair to protect the ends. During the 2 months I conditioned regularly and my hair grew longer, thicker and was quite healthy once I took it out. Crotcheting my hair creates a thinning challenge for me. But it may work well for others. Twists and braids with or without added hair are my saving gracing, and conditioning consistently with good products.
Thank you, Jen! Great info 😊
Definitely interested in the video on the changes you've.
First no oils and butter then no shampoo now this y'all just want to be diffrent at this point
It’s crazy cuz I’ve seen several videos talking about this n personally I didn’t start doing protective styles until I decided to transitioning n I think it made the transition easier but since I big chopped I haven’t done a protective style with extensions plus I colored my hair
Transitioning is hell lmao I would braid my hair too 😅
Yes. Please do a video about all the things you learned about your hair since no oils and butters.
I feel like I get myself in a tough spot when I wear a protective style for too long and don’t give my hair a break after. Back to back protective styles kill my edges and parting space🤦🏾♀️
So true, the parting areas of my hair have definitely thinned out as well thats why I'm giving it a break. I've seen more damage than good done by these "protective styles"
I agree keeping my hair in "Protective style" wasn't the best in regards of health especially since I would leave them in for long 🤦🏾♀️
I don’t know if I’d make some of those general statements. Protective styles, when done right, still allow you to wash your hair, retain the moisture that was put in before the style was installed, and hydrate your scalp. I feel like some of these statements from natural hair “gurus” on social media are specifically worded for sensationalism and incredulous responses that would bring traction to their page.
Coming from someone who did protective styles religiously and who has been affected positively and negatively as well, I am sharing the updated information as to why they are detrimental. Of course people can choose to do what they want just as I choose to spread the right information, even though it goes against the grain. When it comes to haircare, we have been conditioned to do things a certain way and always fight back any new information. No matter how well a protective takes is done, it comes with its set to challenges and no it’s not possible to retain the moisture that was originally put before the style because water evaporates by default.
Sensationalism aside I just want you to analyze your own statement. Can a hair with extensions added (braids, twists, cornrows) be not only washed but *conditioned*? And then do people actually do it with regularity they do when they don't have extensions in... and if not, why? And lastly but maybe most importantly... What exactly are those styles protecting your hair from?
If people are wearing these styles just as much for Aesthetics as they are for protection (if not more) then the goals are not aligned. If people are wearing these styles for their "low maintenance" as much as they are for protection then the goal are not aligned.
I wish we could have better conversations about this but I think that people take things really personally and also are not wanting to discuss some more of the nuances about what makes a style optimal for length retention... and what doesn't
@@AP-kf3xs there is a cult?
I agree Keren. I also find it funny when someone says “STOP PROTECTIVE STYLING” because they are damaging when they have color treated hair. I say do what you want to your OWN hair, however, it seems like a big contradiction.
3:59 sis, if you quit oils and butters back in June, there’s no way it’s been 8 months 🥴
Plus protective styles don’t necessarily mean extensions. You can just do twists or braids with your own hair. Please explain how those are damaging to your hair 😒
I realized my constant wearing of two strand twists….bc that’s the only style I know how to effectively do….and because they stay in for a good 6-8 weeks…is considered protective styling. The only thing I’m protecting is my SANITY bc if I had to comb my hair often…welll….just NO.
I’ve been doing braids with my own hair and keeping my ends moisturized.
I get she should have been more clear. But she meant protective style with extensions. If you don't do them correctly they will damage your hair no doubt. (Not protective style with your own hair). I inferred from the clips she showed of her wearing extensions.
@@tanishaandrea Same! I do cornrows .
I'm pretty sure she was specifically referring to protective styles with extensions in this video
Yes please create the vid on everything you have learned since stopping O & Bs
Or go to the originators and watch their videos instead... Ijs.
Glad to hear you stopped using oil & butter in your hair. It simply stops your hair from producing its own oil. I stopped using those things in my hair 30 years ago. People told me it would cause problems. But my hair stays hydrated on its own. I braid my hair whenever I want , with no oil. My hair stays in good condition. And grows quickly. Good luck!
Even if our scalp produces its own oil our hair is to kinky for the oil to coat the strands . Hair does not produce oil, its the scalp 😂. Do you get shower without putting lotion after because afterall your skin will produces its oils? No so the same can be said about hair, but everyones differnt i guess. I think it only cause problems if your do it, like i dont use butters because they are too heavy but i go in with a light leave in conditioner
I feel like people nowadays use all these gels and use heat to straighten their hair….to protect it…..make it make sense 🥴🥴🥴 everybody want that silky look in box braids twists or cornrows to look good rather than protect it.
Not all advice is good advice putting my hair in braids helps my hair grow just don't leave it in long I know I have been guilty of leaving my hair in for months and not weeks like I planned that's when it becomes unhealthy
Thanks for sharing! Hair growth happens from the inside out so protective style doesn't make hair "grow". reducing manipulation though does allow for length retention.
@@JennJackson same difference in my opinion I know that the hair coming out of my hair is technically dead but putting it in braids helps me keep it
@@victorybeginsinthegarden I think the naturals are all going through a phase, cut, colour, salon visits content etc
@@JC-jam lol
I agree jen, I agree!!
Big ol' contradiction. Don't say don't use protective styles, then say you're gonna braid your hair. Either do or dont
Nice Video! Always informative.
Protective styles are not for everyone. Everyone's hair reacts differently to then. To each his own.
I have seen the woman who are doing the no oil and butter challenge and I’ve also see her hair. Based on the difference I’ve seen in all the before and afters, I will stick to oils and butters.
I respect your decision x
Protective styles with no added hair can be very helpful. My mini twists are my go to. I've managed to retain so much length with varying size twists.
I love mini twists. I was referring to styles with added extensions in this video.
New subbie from Canada too! Excited to see what products u use and which salons you go to cause it isn't giving over here lol
protective styles have helped me retain growth. at the end of the day everyone’s hair is different. do what’s best for you :)
I’ve never done protective styles. I wash and go year round because I live in Southern California so the weather is pretty mild.
Yaaas!! I wanna hear your hair changes please☺️☺️
I'm glad you said it.
I'm currently removing some braids I've had for over a month and my edges are GONE with it!!! Cannot begin to express my sadness 😞 😔
Oh no! I am so sorry this happened. It happened to me as well so be patience with your new journey of growing them back.
@@JennJackson thank you, it's rather depressing I have to say
Stop using oils and butters!!!! Don’t do protective styles!! BUT then let me color my hair and add harmful chemicals to it! OKAY!! Yea just do what’s best for you but please stop trying to tell other people what’s best for them.
You can heathily colour your hair, she went to a professional
I do my own medium size box braids without extensions & make sure my roots have enough space to relax. I've dry scalp so I use olive oil by iC & apply hair moisturizer with water on the hair. Just luv how my natural hair feels. Extension definitely can put stress on natural hair since it's not part of the real hair, so no extensions for me whatsoever 🌸
Very informative Thankyou!
Glad it was helpful!
Definitely should do a video about what you've noticed since you stopped using oils and butters in your hair.
Also great job on your editing!👏🏾 I appreciate you putting in helpful clips to give a visual to what you were saying. I know that was a lot of work.
Hi. I typed Consta Natural and your page popped up, but realized you go by the name of Jenn.
Love the nail style, I rarely like fake nails as I grow mine naturally
Hi, Jenn so I live in Canada too and my hair get really dry. Also it is a little trashy at the ends of my hair do you have any suggestion of what product I can use.
Yeah i like to remoisturize my hair with a little water and leave in during the week one or twice. But when i do like braids even when i try to remoisturize its not the same and my hair is always dry when i take it down
Most definitely would like to know how your progress is goingI just recently transitioned over and I am super nervous and I’m trying to stay trying to do the natural thing but it’s hard
What do you think about stylists coating your hair with gel before braiding? Had braids done today and I was sceptical about it but my hair isn’t long, just awkward length.
Hey I’m no expert but I know that gel typically has alcohol which could cause Dryness and If you have a sensitive scalp . Your hair might get itchy faster . Also in my experience coating your hair in gel would most likely lead to buildup (since you are probably not washing it out like with shampoo like the next week )and you don’t want too much of buildup
@@zammieking1509 I knew it wasn’t a great idea. I’m still gonna wash my hair though as I enjoy clean hair. Just a little upsetting I spent blimming £150 on it, but wanted braids still. Guess we can’t have it all 😂
I use creams to braids and leave in conditioners to spray daily.
You are correct. It's hard to say to my fellow sisters.
I think the issue isn't the style it is a matter of moisture and proper care, and sadly a poorly done protective style is worse than no style.
Currently trying low shampoo routine entirely because if I can't afford conditioner and other hair products, using such strong shampoo so often isn't going to do me any favor
V05 conditioners are 79 cents at Walmart & they are amazing. Suave is also cheap & works well
God Bless you and Family 👪, thanks My love for these tips , I am learning to braid my hair myself
