This is exactly why I refuse to use Uber. As a driver or a passenger. I’ve had people try to get in my car thinking I’m their ride and that shit is scary enough. Always drive with my doors locked because it’s happened more than once
My Mom is terrified about this, and a cab, so we get to drive to her house and bring her everywhere. I won't tell her about this case! Thank you so very much, Dr. Grande!!!
I worked for a limo company in Las Vegas for years and I will tell you that (at least in Vegas) cabs and limos are extremely safe. Everyone goes through background checks and they are followed on GPS by dispatch. Uber and Lyft however are a gamble. They don’t have any safety regulations. Furthermore, because they aren’t driving marked cars, situations in which you may get into the wrong car are very common and in this case, resulted in a heinous murder. I would not suggest using those services (Uber and Lyft).
@@cameronfielder4955 Lyft and Uber are generally safe. I know with Lyft you can verify the driver and license plate number of the car you are getting into to insure you are not getting into an unknown car. Of course nothing is 100% fool proof, but the drivers for lyft and uber are there to make money, not commit a crime against their passengers. Not trying to come across as preaching to you here, but there always chance we can get hit and killed by driving a car or somehow end up dying from Covid. Living in fear is no way to live. On the flip side, cab drivers have been shot and murdered by some of their passengers in Vegas and Reno.

Dr Grande, thank you for addressing this horrible, sad case in such a timely manner. It's very disturbing to know that there are these evil opportunists in our midst. One crime analyst suggested she was a martyr that saved others from a potential serial killer. So terribly sad.

It’s again a very sad case……. I’m glad you took the time to remind your listeners to be cautious…. It can never be over emphasized… j It’s hard ,even with your analysis, to hear about this level of human darkness.
You hit the nail right on the head Dr. Grande! This is why the system of crime and punishment isn't effective as a deterrent for everyone, especially those whose mental health is questionable. It's good to see the discussion of mental health becoming more prevalent, and you're definitely leading the way! Many thanks for another great video.
Thankfully Uber and Lyft are telling riders the color, make, and model to look for with a picture of the driver. Thanks for the cautionary tale and raising awareness, Dr. G!
I think he intended to kill her. Why stab her so many times if it was a robbery gone wrong? There is just something sick about this entire thing. If he wanted to rob someone he could have parked his car and mugged someone on the street. Not lure a woman into his vehicle and kidnap her. And it makes no sense to be in such denial about it unless you're nuts.
I like that you use popular topics to bring awareness about mental health and the science of personality. I bet a lot of people tune in to your channel who would not otherwise take the time to be educated on these subjects. You've probably intercepted the spread of a lot of misinformation. I've learned a lot from your channel personally!
I had a terrible experience with a Lyft ride two years ago. He was a legit Lyft driver, but I realized he was driving on all back roads. Sure enough, he got pulled over, had a warrant out for his arrest. The car was surrounded by four cop cars, guns drawn. I, a passenger, was pulled out of the car and searched. It was terrifying. Two hours later the cops drove me home. Apparently it was a drug related warrant. The cops treated me like a suspect for almost two hours on the side of the road.
Oh hell no. I'm glad your safe. That must have been scary having guns pointing at you. I've had military guns like rifles pointed at me. Only they were members of the swat team that had military guns pointed at me.
Things like this happened in New York with the old gypsy cabs more often than people know, the new rideshare deal makes crimes like this more probable. People get too comfortable getting into cars for a ride and for some reason young woman let their guard down too easily in these situations. I told someone I know that they should never give these rideshare apps their exact address and do not let people see where you are going or what your living situation is, make things harder for would-be stalkers and creeps.
Wow this is very true. Everytime I would give rides to girls they would ask me if I was straight or gay. Ask about the camera & if I review it later on. Women were always on edge. I rather deliver food over taking girls home from thier dates.
This reinforces that I need to start paying closer attention when I'm taking lyft and Uber. I pay attention to the make and model of the car but when I get in I don't ask the driver if they know my name and I've had drivers who simply start driving me when I get in without saying anything to me.
You are able to identify the Uber by the license plate. The drivers only way to identify YOU is to ask YOU what your name is, not the other way round. Otherwise, someone can easily get inside an Uber they didn’t order, which puts the driver at risk.
Almost had to finish my workday without a new video! Thank you again sir, and take a break if you need one. Also, always verify the plates and driver of your Uber with the app before getting in.
This is extremely frightening. I'm glad Uber isn't available in my area. I hope everyone has a great weekend. I really dig the checkered shirt, Doctor.
Its all about trusting your gut instincts, if something feels off DONT do it. Most of the time its right. (Like in this story here) Unfortunately nothing is 100% safe n secure in life. Wether you drive yourself (car crash can happen) taking uber/lyft?, (imposters who like in this video attack n kill you at there chance, or even if matching matching on phone who knows how stable they are? There still strangers) taking airplane? (Crashing possibilities, health problem can occur from riding one) even walking out in public can be considered "risky" ppl could not pay attention hit ya when driving or creepos can threaten ya. Life sadly isnt 100% safe. :( Seems darker n darker nowsdays.
I was at the University of South Carolina at the time of this murder, and it was really shocking to everyone there. My apartment at the time was only a couple minutes away from where this occurred. I appreciate you covering this story.
The uber app also will slow you to message someone you select that you are in an Uber ride and that person can track you to make sure it remains legit.
I really liked the judge in that trial. I watched the whole trial, it was on the Law, and Crime channel live, and only lasted 5 days. The jury found him guilty fast.
You are 100% right when you say that heavy sentencing has no effect if the offender believes he will never be arrested. This is the reason why death penalty has never worked as a deterrent. At the time they commit the offense, murderers always are convinced they will get away with it.
I had a lyft semi recently where I checked the license plate, and got in the car, he cited this case saying “Did you hear about the student who was stabbed 120 times?” And told me I had gotten in the “wrong car.” I hadn’t, but this sounded like a threat, so I ran for my life and called the cops
I as an adult woman have learned a lesson fr Sam’s mistake that night as I DO CHECK MY UBER DRIVERS LICENSE PLATES B4 entering their cars! Poor girl + condolences to her family who are suffering!
When I was Ubering recently, my driver did not have the car that showed on the app. But he proved who he was by telling me my name and where I was going. He said his car broke down and he had to take his wife's. I was a bit nervous, but he turned out to be a very nice guy. But yes, it is good to be super careful!

I really struggled with this case because I couldn’t figure out WHY he committed this inhumane and brutal crime. However, your suggestion that he intended to rob Samantha makes sense to me, as the Five Points area in Columbia is a high crime area at night time due to the high volume of college students combined with the numerous bars in very close proximity to one another. This case will haunt me for years to come.
I had to use a Lyft ride once on a Sunday, it was near Memorial Day and the city had a parade. No buses were running in the afternoon. Made sure the ride had the stickers on the window. Confirmed the driver was the right one. Now I have my senior bus pass. Be safe out there.

Several other key pieces of evidence, first behavioral: when stopped or apprehended NR was, less than 24 hours after slaughtering SJ, right back trolling the Five Points area~driving around in BOLO vehicle, the murder scene itself. And~in order to again cont circling that same block more swiftly or efficiently~ repeating the very same illegal turn driving the wrong way onto the same one-way street (as had by then been viewed on video surveillance) when stopped.. With no ID, weed smoke billowing from his windows. Moreover the blood was still clearly visible in car following his half hearted effort to clean his bloodbath. Its further worth noting that, along with gf's eviction notice (that led LE to M. Howard, his unique murder weapon and numerous other incriminating items in her trash), also found in Impala was a handwritten 'to do' list. Writing which according to pros expert handwriting analyst matched known handwriting samples of NR and detailed as follows: "'Duck' tape whole body (presumably his imo); Gloves; Wear all black.." etc that are suggestive if not proof of premeditation. But when put with both bloody leather jacket and glove (found in trunk); its bloody mate, and weapon (recovered from gf's trash), certainly solves any 'mystery' as to how he managed to avoid injury or maintain the upper hand~given these protective measures and overwhelming advantage. Lastly it was for me esp surveillance video showing NR~just prior to heading for Bird Dog at closing time *as driver and sole occupant of Impala* as he rolled thru Five Points Wendys drive-up window.. My own very amateur analysis: the sheer overkill of his horrific attack~for no monetary gain (and no SA); even his choice of victim (broke college student) imply violence vs robbery was the real true motive here. Coupled with the cavalier nonchalant nature of his killing spree.. in which he barely bothered to conceal his criminal, or clean-up activities (casually cleaning his weapon right in front of gf) nor even the crime scene itself.. strongly suggest this isn't his first rodeo, or murder. But had grown cocky, or lazy~or both. Hope LE's combing the rest of remote wooded area where SJs body was spied by hunters~90 mins from bar, just a mile from his fam home~and sifting thru unsolved murders in any other area he's ever lived.
She must have been so terrified. I can't imagine. It's one of my worst nightmares. I once got a random black cab home and I was terrified the entire time and the relief I felt when I made it home can't be described. Poor poor Samantha. Of all the cars she could have gotten into.
Dr. Grande, Really enjoyed your video, watched it see your methodical comments on the behavior. This was a case I found myself watching on YT. Respectively moving beyond the emotional and physical horror of what happened, after watching most of the testimony and all the closing arguments, it was incomprehensible ( to me) how unemotional he was in the duration of the trial, the impact statements, and his unemotional denial even after conviction. That judge was the best I've ever seen.
Dr. I love your application at the end esp. where you stated a long term punishment does not deter those who gamble their chances of being caught. 💙😍. Sad case, but really injurious to those who are the victims. Thanks for the analysis. 💙😂💙
OMG. I was waiting for my Uber to come pick me up one afternoon, at a business. Then the car came, I opened the back door and got in. Only realizing it wasn't my freaking Uber!!!! I was like OMG. I thought you were my Uber. I'm so so so sorry. I quickly got out. Embarrassed, beyond! That was about 2 years ago. The last time I used Uber, like earlier this year, they now clearly show the car type, color, even a picture and I think even the license plate of the Uber driver you ordered. Make sure you confirm before you get in anyones alleged rideshare care! We have to be vigilant! Stay safe people!
When I was 23 I got into a car that I thought was a cab, but it wasn't. It was just some random guy driving a car that looked like a livery car. We drove half a block and an NYPD officer pulled him over because he had witnessed the driver illegally picking me up. That officer might have saved my life. Ever since then I always, ALWAYS check the license plate number of any car I'm taking to make sure it matches what the app says
I can't imagine any punishment that would provide justice for such a horrific crime but at least this monster will never be on the streets again. The victim impact statement of Samantha's father was heartbreaking. Judge Newman should be commended for his manner and the way he conducts his court room. He allowed both sides to present their case but didn't allow nonsense or theatrics. His words at sentencing said volumes. Thank you Dr. Grande for analyzing this case. Your videos are straight and to the point, devoid of filler drivel. How frustrating it must be as a clinician when there's no rhyme or reason for a human being to be despicable.

Yes! I was going to comment something similar but didn’t want to seem like I blame her AT ALL.
Make sure to match the license plate and be obvious when you do it. That way if it’s somebody with nefarious intent who happens to be a legitimate Uber driver, they know you know exactly who they are

It can never be over emphasized… j
It’s hard ,even with your analysis, to hear about this level of human darkness.
I cannot imagine how awful it must feel losing a young relative with a bright future in such a horrible shocking way.
"This was a case where the defense didn't have to rest as it was resting the whole time"
I still believe in an “eye for an eye punishment” freaking monster!
@Festina_Lente I don't think Jesus meant a murder like this.
He meant to not be as cruel as people do you. God hates murder more than anything.
@Festina_Lente I know.
Eye for an eye? That’s racist.
Thankfully Uber and Lyft are telling riders the color, make, and model to look for with a picture of the driver. Thanks for the cautionary tale and raising awareness, Dr. G!
I use Ubers quite a bit (don’t drive because I have a seizure disorder) so I always keep a close eye on that information when I’m waiting for it.
She was drunk so it doesnt matter if uber changed their policies ir not
I think he intended to kill her.
Stay safe out there. I'm sorry they thought you were part of the problem.
Best way is to confirm the license plate number. It's quick and fool-proof.
This is why I never use ride shares - I only use cabs that are regulated by the state. Not fool-proof, but better.
By the time you get in, it probably will be too late.

Thank You Dr. Grande for an excellent analysis!
Love you dr. Grande!!
