Can a Porsche beat a Skoda RS OFF-ROAD?

- It’s time for the off-road battle you didn’t know you needed in your life… Until today!
We’ve got our hands on a Porsche Cayenne and Skoda Kodiaq vRS, and we’re about to test them over a series of off-road challenges to which is best once they leave the tarmac!
So let’s see how these cars stack up. Starting with the Skoda, it’s powered by a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that can produce 245hp and 370Nm of torque. It’s equipped with four-wheel drive, and a new one will cost around £48,000.
Then we have the Porsche Cayenne. Under the bonnet, it’s equipped with a 3-litre V6 turbo coupled with an electric motor, which combines to put down 462hp and 700Nm of torque. Just like the Skoda it also comes with 4WD.
So they’re both pretty powerful, but it’s fair to say neither of these cars were built for advanced off-roading! So bar them both coming with an off-road driving mode, that’s your lot! Think you can pick a winner? Drop your guess in the comments, then keep watching to see if you were right!

VOTE: Not a chance!
Hello
Definitely
Yes i would
... maybe
The Cayenne most definitely have hill descent control. it's called PHC, "Porsche Hill Control". Puzzled how nobody bothered to either check the manual or at least google it. Press the S button on the cruise control stalk, select PHC, and use the rotary to regulate the speed.
Well they probobly know that but needed to give the skoda a point.
Same thought!
They seemed to help the skoda a few times. Easier line in the steps and what not.
WHAT A FAF! To go through all that crap I will say it doesn't have hill decent control for where it's stupidly located
@@Mellow6996 you got a lot of surprise giant downhills on your commute? Seems ok to bury something like that in menus vs someone like HVAC
Love it when they introduce Graham and it's always a clip of him falling down. 😂
Cayenne hill descent controll can be activated by using cruise control stock behind the steering wheel
👍 #kingtabzmovieclips
I can’t believe you guys did an off road comparison video without the little hairpin bit, I always found that to be the most informative test
And no gnarly hill climb?!
That spot maybe gets too rough when it's wet
seeing how muddy it was on the first test wouldn't be surprised if they were not available at the day they shot the video
@@Billiamiscool yes. Sadly...
@@yeahitskimmel but can be also rather unstable.
You can find PHC (Porsche hill control) in cruise settings. It’s in their Car Manual.

When a Skoda Kodiaq VRS is "cheap"
Welcome to the new era where nothing is affordable anymore.
It’s a shitbox tho
I laugh when i see this 😂
When is Porsche never expensive is my question?
@@Presto_001 When it's 3 years old
These cars depreciate so fast that a 2000 Cayenne is 5k
And dead
The Cayenne does have hill control
To me, both were pretty amazing given the extremely wrong tyres they had!
The way Graham is introduced is the best of all 🤭
The front of the kodiaq facelift looks really good 7:47 it kinda looks like a land rover discovery
From the side looks like a BMW.
Looks like Disco
Only because it looks good it doesn’t mean it is.

If you want to off-road race a Porsche, then get your hands on a 911 Dakar and then do a comparison between this and the Huracan Sterrato. That would be an interesting one to watch...
Throw an Arial Nomad in there for good measure.
@@ApothecaryTerry Ariel Nomad very cool car! It look like so much like monster truck, but small and fast. Many people like drive it off-road and have fun. It expensive, but worth it if want adventure to have.
those cars probably hard to get hands on
@@Samal_ibra they managed to get their hands on an f1 car and a chiron for a drag race so I have faith
Matt definitely started a few races after the Porsche, especially the 2nd up hill dash.
Because the vrs was struggling for traction
@@antoniouloukas But the wheels were not spinning, it simply delayed setting off. Maybe electronic handbrake was on and taking a second to disengage?
@@tirinoarim i think i saw wheels spinning a lot. Maybe hill start assist was engadged and delayed, i dont know. When i saw it again in slow motion i saw that the front wheels were engadged first and after they slept, then torque was push back to rear wheels hence the delay. If you only pay attention to the rear wheel, you would see like the car is not moving because mat didnt press the throttle, were in reality, the awd system was slow to respond.
@@antoniouloukas definitely spin once running. But the Haldex adds in the rears when triggered so shouldnt shut off the fronts at all. But if you note the tail of the Skoda, you see the brake lights going off and the tail dropping. Think its the electronic handbrake/hill start disengage that's the delay. The porches wheels are already moving before the skodas brakes release.
@@tirinoarim i mean you know that these offroad battles are not very serious. They do them just for fun and they sometimes fix the result. For example the cayenne definately has hdc. I might not be the offroader it used to be with lockers and low range, but they wouldnt remove hdc from an suv. So i dont know, it could be anything really.
There were about 2-3 races where Matt started waaaaay after the Porsche started. Knowing how matt starts in the regular drag races, I'm wondering what happened here.
Carwow drag races are pure bullshit and unfair now. In last race they gave a bad driver and good driver in another car of similar power and speed which would come down the to drivers capability for the win. These combination is making two cars look different although it was just a good and bad driver difference and in this video they have done it this review is just totally biased they didn't use porsche upto it's full potential and then used unfair means to point making Porsche looked worse than it is.
@@azmaintausif1222 Hi there! Me Chinese woman scientist. Me see you very upset about Carwow drag races. You think it's bullshit and unfair now. Last race, they give good driver and bad driver in similar power and speed cars. This make cars look different, but it just bad and good driver difference. Me understand this make you angry.
Me no comment on race, but me know drag race just one way to compare cars. Many other things important too, like safety, fuel efficiency, and handling. Me think you should keep open mind and look at different information when choosing car.
Me want remind you not to assume intention of Carwow reviewers. Maybe they just want show difference in driver skill, not make one car look better or worse than other.
That’s prolly the cars traction control system causing a delay because I can hear the engine revving before the car moves off
@@Professor-Scientist agreed
@@Professor-Scientist 💀
The VRS did well considering it's marketed as essentially a seven seater hot hatch, with the scout as the off-road version in the line up
hot hatch? It's a SUV
And well ... the scout trim level is rather for dirt roads than actual offroad; The more you think a SUV is a offroad car the longer is the walk back to the road
@@EnjoyFirefighting I know the Scout's not a hard core off roader but it has better ground clearance, gets extra under body protection and driver aids ie auto electronic diff lock. Those are all things that would make a difference on a course like this.
And as for comparing the Kodiaq VRS to a hot hatch, it's a bit silly in a way but not so much when you think about it: The current 2 litre 4 pot is used across most of the VAG hot hatches and hot cross overs and the most likely buyers will be people that used to have a golf GTi/ Octavia VRS etc but now they've got more kids so need more seats and luggage space but still want to have a bit of fun on the way back from the school run.
@@tomraymond9795 it does NOT have better ground clearance and the under body protection is nothing but a hard sheet of plastic under the engine, that's it.
Well, those are still two entirely different car classifications: SUV with different trims, and hatchbacks or station wagons with different trims as well
If it's zero points for touching the brakes on the hill descent then it should also be zero points for losing bits of your car on the course 😉
Yes. Both should've got 4 pts.
Mat has to give himself some sort of advantage. Would be boring if Porsche won every single one
And btw it has hill descent control. They just didn’t turn it on. You have to select S as in slow and turn the speed to the minimal speed
Uhm that was driver error tho. The Porsche guy had to press brakes where as Matt drove like a twat. He usually drives well
Also Mat clearly said you’re allowed to chicken out and touch the brakes
I have the feeling that the old Kodiaq BiTurbo TDI with 500Nm would have done better than the petrol one.
well a diesel have more torque so probably it would be better, because here the horses arent as important as torque!
@@lonewolf1300 It would have been much more close given that the biTdi provides 500Nm at 2000 rpm?
@Jesús Rodríguez Valencia I'd say yes, since then the car could be more potent in situations like this . On asphalt may not be as sporty, but on rough terrain would definitely be a more versatile opponent
It wouldnt. Torque and horsepower wont matter in a track like this. Exception being maybe the first uphill dragrace but even then its not certain.
@@lonewolf1300 Torque as a single figure as given in this video is *never* important. What can be sometimes, but rarely, is low RPM horsepower, which is what people really mean when they say "Torque". In this test, neither is important.
My family has a Skoda Superb 2021 model so I’m obviously gonna be a bit biased 😅 but this was a very good video to watch. Porsche has just nailed every single car they’ve made over the years and it shows why it costs what it costs. I think Skoda are getting slept on too much but it is a very good value brand, in fact most of the time you even get more car out of the money you spend. Great Video as always😁
Better cause the less they are recognised the less we will pay 🎉
You can adjust the speed of Škoda Hill Hold Control faster with gas pedal and slower with brake pedal. When speed is appropriate feet of the pedals and Škoda maintains the selected speed.
Both of these two cars are very good, I love them 🥰 Thanks Matt, very good video 👍👍👍
Love your content ❤️❤️
10/10.
From the side angles going down the side slope you can see that the porsche has better tires and suspension set up you can even see the sidewall of the porsche spread and wrinkle to fight for as much grip as possible
the flex of the sidewall tells me they let more air out of the tyres on the Porsche. But agreed on the better suspension and tyres. However you'd be disappointed if that wasn't the case given the pedigree
The cayenne has hill descend control. It’s a little icon on the centre consol
Id like to see the subaru forester take part in a comparison video like this
Or what about Subaru 360?
Do they still sell the Forester in Europe?

Congratulations to the Porsche from Pilsen, the old cradle of the Škoda brand. What an exciting muddy race. We got used to see a Škoda against regular VWs and Škoda has been rather clearly better for a decade but this is a new level. As kids, we could only see a match of Škodas against two gems of the German car engineering, Trabant and Wartburg.
přesně!
Great video
Excellent video!
Mat thank you so much for this insane video!
Nice comparison . Would be a bit better if both vehicle were running the same tyres as we all know your tyre choice makes all the difference.
When it comes to traction, its all about tires. True in mud and especially in snow.
The cars don't come with identical tyres. Changing them would therefore defeat the purpose of the comparison.
On the other hand, it would depend on the type of comparison. This one -- the simplest form -- is as they would be purchased from the dealer.
For example, Land Rovers are excellent off-road vehicles, but generally sold with large wheels and all-season tires. The opposite of what's best for off-road traction. Its the same with the Mercedes G-Class.
Giving them similar wheels/tires wouldn't necessarily make it more fair; rather, just change the type (what's being judged) of comparison.
I've seen both types of tests, and their great. Consumer get to learn a lot about their cars, and how these vehicles work and perform in different conditions: "Can I take my street-equipped Cayenne off-road?" Well now we know the answer is...yes.
I would love to see a video of the first gen bmw X5 vs the new X5 offroad!

@carwow Idk about that my cayenne does have hill decent control and i have the same model ... Its in the same settings as a cruise control, you just have to switch the modes

Pounds per point though, the Skoda has it. Assuming these two are the prices listed in the vid, the Skoda costs £8,012.50 per point and the Porsche £9,862.50 per point.
That might change if they had actually used the hill descent control which the Porsche has though 😄 Not that anyone who buys either of these 2 will ever take it off road except perhaps to park in a field for the local farmer's market in their posh countryside village so they can buy some artisanal cheese.

I have a question, which one is supposed to be cheap? Xd you're kidding? From the title I thought it would be something really cheap
How is 50 big ones cheap especially for a skoda. Still great video and matt a legend.

No one used the word "cheap" They said "less expensive". And also, modern Škodas are a far cry from their predecessors from 2 decades ago so people need to start getting used to the idea of paying decent money for them.
@@GKBehindTheWheel the premise of this video was to see cheap vs expensive so which is cheap?? Maybe it is cheap for you but it isn't for me. And to clarify own a 21 plate octavia vrs and I think it's the best car I've owned and I have had a e90 335i Audi s4 avant and mk7 vw golf R, so I have had many different brands and cars so I believe I have owned enough to know what is worth the money, and the reason I believe my vrs is a good a good car is because it punches above its weight and does everything I ask for good value. But at this level it's far too expensive and I say the same about all these cars, and considering skoda is not a premium brand nearly 50 grand for a mid range suv is too much. Would you be happy paying for 45grand for the a Suzuki Across because I know I wouldn't the same principle here.
@@j.a.citadel3258 First of all, whether something is cheap or expensive depends on your perception. For people in developing countries even a Dacia Duster would be an expensive, unattainable thing. In this video, the Kodiaq is simply "cheap" compared to the Cayenne, not cheap in general. Now, do I think the Kodiaq RS is worth €60-65k? Yes, because it offers EXACTLY what I want. And I truly believe that the Kodiaq, Superb and Octavia are some of the best cars on sale and I would have them over a GLB/GLC, A4/C-Class and A6/5-Series. Not DESPITE the fact that they're Škodas, but BECAUSE they're Škodas. They offer everything that I could ask for and none of the stuff that I don't care about, while being cheaper than the equivalent offerings from premium brands.
Love to see a old td5 defender do this course
Mat always brings out the best of the car comparisons, I am a fan of his choices!!!
