Well, thermally, it seems to be a much better engine. It's correctly venting all it's thermal heat into the coolant, hence BOOM. The BMW just heated and cooked the oil and the block. This says volumes about the Porsche. MUCH more resilient design.
At least the thumbnail didn't state R.I.P. Mat Waston & Crew. I really do hope they weren't seriously injured after standing so close to the vehicle. He truly puts his body on the line for top content.
Lmao, the post-explosion ear-ringing sound at the end 🤣 so dramatic, but also was pretty foolish of him to stand so close to those engine bays while doing this

@@streeatbeat I think the explosion is real but they where not stading there when it happend just pause the video right when explosion happend and you will understand.
The BMWs cooling system was definitely broken. You can tell by the smoke not being blown around by the radiator fan. Also, not having oil won’t ruin the engine that quickly.
These experiments are dangerous and can seriously injured you or anyone in close proximity I sincerely hope Mat and anyone else close by are well if there is any injuries I hope they are not serious or they are hardly noticeable! Stay positive Car WOW team and fans, we support you!
Don't bother. I own one of those BMW X5s. They're shit cars. They're full of stuff that any shade tree mechanic would know is stupid. Just tonight mine developed a problem with the siphon pump in the fuel tank; you can't run it below 1/4 of a tank without it stalling...All because BMW decided to build the fuel system out of pop-together plastic bits instead of proper threaded connections with compression seals. It's ALWAYS something with these cars.
I feel so bad because one time in my 1.8 Cruze(same engine as an Astra) I'd resealed the sump myself and after a month oil didn't want to circulate and more recently I accidentally lugged it too hard up a steep hill, still around but the thought of no oil is horrible Get well soon mate!
I'm not surprised at the Porsche lasting so long. Much as I respect the BMW engine (RIP to that one), my parents had a Porsche 924 for over 36 years and the engine had done almost 250,000 miles. Still, at least both cars (and I'm hoping not Matt) met a fitting ending!
Woah, something other than a drag race. And its actually a pretty interesting idea, something they would or probably did do on top gear. On top of that we learn something about the cars other than testing to see if their claimed acceleration times are accurate.
RIP Matt!! He's a good man, with great sense of humour. I feel sad for his loss! Can't imagine CARWOW without Matt! may he rests in Peas! Goodbye MATT :(
Safe? That is what happens when engines sieze up, they throw metal out. He's been sticking his head right in there telling them to revv them up as well.
I drove a Mercedes W124 3.0L Diesel from Brighton to Leeds to Brighton with no oil in it by accident. And I mean none! Filled it up when got back to the garage. It's got 285k miles on the clock now and I did that at 190k miles.
All through this video I thought Matt was very brave (or mad) to be so close to these cars while running with NO OIL, I was expecting an explosion to happen, and WHAT AN EXPLOSION 💥. I hope everyone was ok, please DON'T repeat that test in future, or if you do at least stand WELL BACK. That ending genuinely got me worried.

I had a buddy who drove a ‘95 Toyota Corolla for 6 months with no oil. It had an oil leak and had been bled dry when he got tired of refilling the oil. He literally drove it bone dry for 6 months before it seized up on him. But when another friend of ours fixed the leak and put oil in, the car ran again without a hitch! Craziest thing we ever witnessed…
That is japanese reliability my friend,,i know many cars hondas mitsubishis Toyotas you name it that experienced the same thing and still going strong,,japanese engines are bullet proof no doubt
Owned a Rover 600 from 1995 and had it for two years. As the car was based on a Honda Accord it had the 2 Liter Honda engine. One day to work the radiator sprung a leak and emptied itself in like 5 mins. Drove like 15 miles to work from where it happened with no water in the car. Smelled a bit hot but still worked. Then drove back like 30 odd miles filling up every now and then but the car worked great and no knocking. Got a new radiator but that blew up as apparently the head gasket had gone pumping air in the the radiator so eventually scrapped the car. Japanese engines last forever with the right maintenance.
I’m presuming an April Fool joke here, that said, I have a friend with a 2007 Volvo V70 D5, he unknowingly cracked its sump and lost its oil, it’s dashboard was not working (relatively common on these) so he had no warning lights but it sounded rough, after a week of running it to and from work we took a look and found the dipstick completely dry and barely nothing left in the sump. One replacement sump and oil refill later, it fired up and thee years later is somehow still running and in daily use.
@@brucehauser6826 never even thought of an April fools joke but now when you're mentioning it I did wonder about the Magneti Marelli as that's normally what you find in Italian and French cars and not in a Volvo as they're normally use Bosch electronics...
