SpaceX Starship/Superheavy Launch and Catch Animation

  • With the first Starship orbital flight attempt scheduled for early next year, we're now starting to look forward to one of the wildest parts of the Starship program to date: catching the Super Heavy booster instead of using landing legs. Very little is known about the exact catch sequence, so I decided to animate how I think it may look.
    The actual first catch attempt will likely be on the second or third launch attempt, so the booster is shown as the upgraded 33-engine version.

    This is an incredible render, the only thing I think will be slightly inaccurate is the moment the Chopsticks catch the booster. It seems pretty violent here. Starship is not the Falcon 9, part of the reason they can't test this system on the Falcon 9 is that the Merlin engine is too powerful to let the empty booster hover, even at idle throttle. But the Starship booster is so heavy, and the thrust fraction of the Raptor is much smaller, so it will be able to hover. It's 100 tons of steel SpaceX is trying to stop, they will want to scrub off any speed they can. If they don't, it'll be converted into torque on the Chopsticks, and snap them off like they really did get the from your local sushi restaurant.

    • @hamjudo
      @hamjudo 2 роки тому +25

      Each chopstick will definitely gently meet its side of the booster. The chopsticks won't move the booster until it is firmly in their grasp.
      Once the booster is spun into the correct orientation and distance from the tower, it will be moved in a gentle, almost parabolic arc to the launch pad or transfer stand. It won't be a perfect parabola because the last few meters into the pad will be straight down.
      They will use a path that minimizes torque on the booster. They do not want the booster to swing. At least that will be how they move boosters when they are in a hurry. For the first catch, they might move things very slowly and just one axis at a time, as animated here.
      On the other hand, any collision strong enough to bend a chopstick will crumple the booster.
      The booster skin is between 3 and 4mm, while the walls of the steel tubes in the chopsticks are much thicker. The booster skin is stretched tight by the internal tank pressure and it is a tougher alloy. These strengthen the booster walls, but not nearly enough to prevent bending first in a collision with the chopsticks.

      It was an amazing animation, but I agree that landing on the chop sticks wasnt quite right. No way it'll hit that hard. SH will most likely nullify all the velocity before touching the grab arms. I would also bet it comes down off-center and translates laterally into the chop sticks as they close. Not exactly fuel efficient, but efficiency isnt what SS is being designed for.

      I agree, I few things I believe would be different: QD arm might only disconnect at the very last second before lift off, probably after ignition, otherwise the stack is not stable enough. Landing burn should reduce booster velocity to 0 and I think the booster will do the same dog leg movement as Falcon 9, and will most likely arrive on the chopsticks from the front and hover before the arms closing. Otherwise, amazing job overall!

    currently when boosters land on either the landing pad or landing ship they are quite accurate but this takes accurate to another level, it has to be perfectly in between the arms so that when the arms close it doesn’t crash or explode. THAT. WAS. SO. GOOD. This is a very up to date take on Starship and Booster thinking - QD arms, Raptor Boost covers....i think i detected a double ignition (RBoost followed by the inner 9?) in the flame push at launch, Starship looked perfect. Grid fins staying horizontal throughout launch. Aero covers on the COPVs for booster. You even has Stage 1 / Stage 2 seperation rotation in there.....sweet. Only....only critisism of a beautiful piece of animation was that i dont think Booster will come back in that quickly intentionally. I think they will aim to do almost a hover slam at the top of the tower to arrest descent speed to 1-2 m/s and then match descent speed down the tower with the catch arms and once booster and arms are matched in speed only then will the arms will close in to catch. We will see soon(ish!)

      Why do the grid fins stay horizontal during the whole flight?

    • @matthewlee2424
      @matthewlee2424 2 роки тому

      @@danyboy86 Hi, becasue when the grid fin is horizontal to airflow, its resistance to the air is negligable. So SpaceX intend to allow the grid fins to self telt on the way up to present least resistance. On the way down they will be under power so can turn into the airstream to create angel changes for the ship. The point is, by not having 4 mechanisms to retract each gridfin against the body they save significant weight, more mass I expect than the mass of extra propellant required to overcome the slight drag losses on the way up. Hope that makes sense

      The thrust vector will be creating an area of negative pressure adjacent to the raptors during ascent, so I think it's accurate that the vapors floating around there would get sucked in and blasted down the middle. This is AMAZING beautiful work, I imagine that the catch will all happen slower than you've depicted. I'd bet that they plan for the booster to effectively be hovering before they close the catch arms.
