Most people lean then slide. Try moving your feet first then lean forward, pushing yourself up, then shift sideways. Practice at home off the edge of your bed.

Another tip I've learned along with the first tip: when you scoot your bottom to the front, concentrate on putting your weight on your heels to take stress away from the knees.

My Mom had a Lift Recliner for many years before and after she became more disabled. The whole family loved it! It was a backsaver for my sister and I who became her major caregivers after she only had use of one leg and we had to transfer her to and from her wheelchair. Shop carefully, they're all different in some small way. Al

Thanks, I always learn from your videos. Chair selection can be limited. I'm currently shopping for a comfortable chair for my living room. The stores seem to have an abundance of low squishy ones. I may need to use the chair pad solution.

I also use one hand between my knees on the seat of the chair and push up with that hand and the other hand on the back of the chair or on the side of the chair for the stability. Don’t know if this will be tested by you, but it does help me. Thank you for the additional helps for me to learn.

I use a two-step solution: first, adjust the center of gravity by bending forward at the waist so your torso is parallel to the floor, while straightening your legs; then, once your legs are vertical, lift your torso to vertical.

I’m going to teach this to some of my friends. I’m 71 and have no difficulty getting up from a chair. I can still get up off the floor without using my upper extremities but it’s getting more difficult. I’m working on increasing my strength so that I can hang on to this ability as long as I can. I was surprised that you made no mention of the risks of rolling/swivel desk chairs. Unless the person pushes straight down on the arms, carefully, the chair will roll back. Especially using just one armrest, as you demonstrated!! Please - roll the chair with its back to the desk first! Then you still must be careful to not put sideways pressure on either armrest causing it to swivel as you come to a stand. Huge fall risk!!

hmmm maybe i am just dumb and clumsy, but how would i get a chair near me while i am sitting in a chair? where would i put it so it's ready to help me? how would i reach it? i barely have room to put the walker i am getting now. maybe i just dont understand....'scoot it to the side'.....ahhhhhhhahahahaha!! i am not in a nursing home, where there is empty space everywhere around me!! i am in a cluttered old house!! too funny! and what about comfort? my recliner is soft and comfy, important since i must sit a lot! goodness, i am not sitting for hours in a hard, narrow, kitchen chair to 'rest' and 'relax'....as to the lift chair, be sure you have a guarantee, make sure it's comfortable for sitting! my insurance got me one, it's terrible and useless!! hard as a rock, impossible to recline and be rested! tried to return/exchage it, and , NOPE , they wouldnt even consider it! shameful on the local medical supply store!!
