Thank you for this: I am SO ENCOURAGED to see a beautiful woman of my size completing these exercises. As I watched, I became teary, knowing I could NEVER do this! My actual first thought was, "Oh, that poor woman!" because I actually felt pain in my knees *just watching!* This makes me wonder, "Could this ever be me???" The contortions of my getting up from the toilet would almost be comedic if not so sad and torturous. There is no excuse for me NOT to try these, and today starts my journey.
Hi Alyssa! I teach group fitness and a lot of my clients are seniors with osteoarthritis…I have been watching your videos and learning so much from you! A huge thank you from myself and all of my clients ☺️
Alyssa, you are an excellent trainer! ... and life saver! Thank you to your assistant also for helping to show reality in what some aren't able to do but are then able to do!! Thank you sincerely!!
Thank you , excellent information and demonstration from your lovely assistant. Makes it so relatable and give us hope when you have someone in front of you able to do something now that was impossible in the past. Love your channel❤
Thank You ladies I needed this video. New to your channel Alyssa. I’m Ms J. Glad you popped up in my recommended list this morning. Be Blessed and have a wonderful day ladies.
I've been doing the fast stand up & slow controlled sit down for less than a week, just randomly. I can't believe how quickly it has worked! I'm late sixties didn't really think muscle would grow that quick. Thank God it does. I'm not sure what "squeezing the hips" means in this video. It's not the glutes, some other muscle? thanks Alyssa.
This is an excellent way to break the sit to stand into its components. Having a coach or PT tell me to just do a sit to stand is a recipe for pain since it aggravates my right adductors and left inner knee. Thank you!
I bought those leg straps a month ago and they are amazing. Where have they been all my life 😊 I will be 72 years YOUNG next month. I will NOT give into or Claim stiffness, soreness and mobility issues in Jesus name AMEN🙏🏾 Love your channel. Ms J
I'm 64 years old. I have osteoporosis in my hips and back. I have been walking a little bend over because of the pain I have in my left hip/groin. It is very painful getting up from a sitting position. Will these exercises help with that? Thank you for this video.
Professional PT style is evident 🙏🏻 We/I have gained some of my strength back with your advice. Motorcycles are a fun AND dangerous hobby, sometimes painful though 🤨
Thank you, Alyssa, for showing us these. I won't sit on my daughters couches for this very reason! And I will be checking out that cloth band. I am always just a bit uneasy when I use the latex bands, both the tubes and the flat bands. I have visions of there being a weak spot, and a sudden break will occur.😮
3 years ago I was fit and healthy (then 66), with just some slight hints that my knees were wearing. Then in 6 months I went from there to being on crutches and having zero strength in my legs - at one point I couldn't get off a chair at all. At that point I was diagnosed with severe rheumatic polymialgia and when the high-dosage immunosuppressants I was put on started to take effect I found that my calf muscles particularly had wasted away to almost nothing - just hanging skin. This exacerbated the knee issues badly and after an MRI the doctors are now talking about knee replacement. I have managed to build the calfs and thighs with an excercise bike and some days I can climb stairs ok, other days are less easy. Down stairs are still a struggle. However I still find the back of the knees are weak and the muscles repeatedly failed until about 9 months ago and still sometimes feel as if they are about to. I still can't stand up without arm help and none of the exercises I've been trying seem to be improving matters. I'll try these three but do you have any other suggestions for speeding up the recovery? I fear having an operation without being stronger than I am currently, and as a previously keen walker I want to be able to at least walk the country trails even if I can't get back to the mountains.
Would be interesting to know what leg routine Alyssa uses for herself. I don't think she is using these techniques that she teaches for osteoarthritis sufferers; she has built substantial leg muscles/strength.
Interesting. Gives me an idea to try. My knees aren't the problem, but this looks like it might be good for a recalcitrant hip, too. Some serious power-lifters swear by "box squats" which in principle are very much like your second exercise. I keep looking for ways to hit the posterior chain without causing a flareup. And for the holy grail: a good low-impact hill-sprint substitute to work on VO2 max.
@arthritisadventure Thank you for all your excellent work. Would these exercises work for people with both bilateral hip and bilateral knee replacements? Thank you.
For me no knee pain but my problems are trouble with balance and I think my knees lock. Don’t think I have soft knees. My Ms is challenging for me. Thanks for you videos.
Please do help me with my pain in my arms and shoulder. Specially when I sleep at night when I sleep on the side, the arm pains, which ever side I sleep.
Gluteus medius amnesia also IT band problems. Broke my femoral stem and had anterior hip replacement said the found another femur fracture and made me stay off it for three weeks then said it was fine. Advice?
Hello I am 21 suffering from osteoarthritis in hip joint for 2 years i tried so many things and improved a lot but still there is pain and stiffness making it difficult for me to carry out daily routines please help me i am already following you still need your help 😭😔😔
I had mashed hips that refractories. I healed in an upright position like the mischlien woman the swelling was like a cast. Hit by a car 3 times with 3 bounces. A miracle as left rib cage mashed too punctured lung & concussion Jesus let me stay. Il see if I can learn this.
Help! I don’t see the link for the cotton band. Looks like the perfect thing for me. My knee is bone on bone, but bigger problem is my glutes have severe atrophy and tears. Would these exercises be ok? Thank you so much!
I do these exercises as I have had a knee replacement on my left knee, however I have pain inside my right knee, when I stand the pain is extreme after workouts and I have to ice it. Clearly I am doing something wrong?
Try doing the exercises in front of a mirror. Your knees may be moving in like I talked about in the video. You can learn a lot using a mirror when doing exercises!
Pain when walking and difficulty balancing can be caused by a variety of things including: muscle imbalances, decreased mobility, strength asymmetry (one side is stronger than other), decreased sensation (I.e neuropathy), etc.
Actually, a physio told me it is inadvisable to sit in a low chair. It is bad for your back. You should always sit so that your hips are higher than your knees she said
I wouldn’t say I agree, low seating surfaces are not inherently bad. Sometimes there isn’t a choice not to sit in low surfaces especially low public toilets and some chairs in public places.
Love that you have an assistant showing how this is done...i truly appreciate this

Do the bands have a velcro closure to put on and take off?
Or, are the bands whole like a rubber band?

OK for severe osteoporosis?
How long did it take for her to get to this stage?
This is difficult to say an exact time she could do this but she was very diligent when we were working together for almost a year.

Is there a reason the hands have to go under the chin? Can your arms just go free range?

Weight distribution is different between men and women!
What do you mean by squeezing the hips? Do you mean squeezing the buttocks (glutes)?
Squeeze the glutes as you stand up to bring your hips forward.
