  • So, how do you fix a slow smart doorbell? By doing a reset of your Aqara doorbell you can cut the latency by a high percentage as demonstrated in this video. My doorbell went from slow to nearly instant in detecting and sending notifications.

How do you speed up a slow video doorbell? I'll walk you through the steps for an Aqara smart doorbell, but similar steps will probably work with your Google, Ring, Arlo, Eufy, or other brand of smart doorbell. The problem has been a really slow notification when motion or a person is present. The doorbell picks up the event quickly but the push notification to my phone has been taking around 15 seconds. As I've shown in these other videos linked below, there are problems for having a video doorbell if you can't get quick notifications.
Latency is a problem with a lot of our wifi devices, and sometimes resetting the device will help to improve the problem. By "latency" I am referring to the lag time between when an even occurs and when the action by the device happens. If my smart lights were experiencing latency, it would be a few seconds before the light bulbs responded. If it were my security system, a thief could open the window and be inside before the alarm would sound. Fortunately I have not had problems with most devices. However, video doorbells seem to be particularly susceptible to problems with latency - likely because they have to work over the wifi network as opposed to other forms of connection.
Many of our smart devices work either by Bluetooth or other forms like Z-wave. These are lower power connections that use less battery. Aqara's video doorbell works by wifi (like most of the smart video doorbells on the market.)
While I have stated the shortcomings of the Aqara doorbell in other videos, I still use my two G4's, and I like the fact that they work with Apple HomeKit and also have local storage by micro-SD. Their shortcomings are shared by most of the other similar products on the market.
