I helped build some of the last council houses in the UK in the south of England (right to buy ended construction for local authorities). The problem was always procurement of land… if you can secure that and with enough political will it can happen. The NIMBYs will slow it down, but the UK needs new housing badly.
@@basfinnis I wouldn’t recommend building on any green space tbh. There’s a lot of brown sites around but the problem has been land-banking by developers and local authorities happy to sell it off. Laws will have to be changed, CPOs issued etc. The key to this is working out better ways of building and living on a small conservative island. Look to the Netherlands for quality, innovation and planning that works.

They can probably solve the housing problem and much more I mean it has always been labour who have built with forward thinking ideas. at the moment with the likes of Farage and the remaining Conservative individuals Labour really need to come out and shut them down immediately they have all been on the Radio and TV rounds carelessly giving out as much misinformation as they can get away with.
Time to put paid to the lie that councils use the land to build 'affordable' housing. It's mainly for overseas investors. The unhealthy relationship between councils, Hounslow and Ealing spring to mind, and property developers needs to be exposed. Citizens need green land as well. Most of this country is owned by landed gentry and it's no good high rising what's left.

Land banking needs to end. All the housing needed can be built if land with approved development held by developers was built & unaccompanied & or derelict and or brownfield sites were built on or brought back into a habitat state. Building regulations tightened (returned to previous standards dropped by Tories). Targets can be met by allowing people into the country i.e. freedom of movement. UK supply of builders is insufficient to meet objectives.
The highest number of total homes built in a year was 1968 when the government, housing associations, and private sector built just over 400k. If Labour can match that push for the four years of the parliament then yes, it's absolutely doable. Are they likely to reach that target? I think it's doubtful, the 60s was a huge period of expansion with WW2 still deeply etched into the country's psyche and the damage it wrought on cities still visible in many places. I would have preferred a more reasonable target, say 1 million which is more around the number built in the early 60's and mid-late 70s (and also sustained slightly longer). I'd also like Labour to bring in a Housing Working Group led by a Trans guy, and a Lesbian with a Gay comms director and Trans woman as the parliamentary liason. If the rest of the group could be made up of various Non-Binary folk who use different pronouns that'd be awesome. Because just imagine Bad Enoch refusing to speak to Patrick because she thinks he should still be using Patricia, and getting a written reply from Xir Smith explaining that they don't have a Patrick who works there. Turn her culture wars around on her. 😉 😁

Point out the wrong but do it at a familiar level, Robespier has a similar channel but we need to move on and drill down on the crap that is being spread. Making comparisons for a moment, the Conservative Government were in power for over 170 months and in that time just look and ask yourself what did they achieve? Labour have been in power for 1 month. Base comments on achievements first before you all decide what should be done first by Labour.
The main problem with right to buy was the sales money had to be spent on reducing debt not building replacement homes.

Esbc published plans in my local paper outlining there plans to build 50% more houses next year
All the planning applications in our area are greenbelt, luxury homes for wealthy people only.
