AM I LOSING MONEY ON MARKETING LAMBS IN 2020? Vlog 301

- HOW HAS THE LAMB MARKET BEEN SO FAR IN 2020?
A very common question, that I can now talk a bit more about. I took all my April/May lambs from 2019 and compared them to my April/May lambs of 2020.
I took the average market price I was paid last year, and this year to see if I truly did lose money.
What I found is that market price is only but one factor involved in the overall success of the lamb business.
We can't really control the fluctuations of market price, but we can hone in on what we can control through production improvements to really soften the blow of a dictated price.

I love watching you weigh the lambs and seeing the weight for each of them.
Nurse here. The lamb with the broken leg may still need a cast. It is not weight bearing because the fracture hasn't healed. It will also need range of motion exercised to be able to bend its knee joint. If you re-cast it, cover up the wound and make the cast lower than the wound. The lump you are feeling at the fracture site is new bone growth repairing the fracture which is supposed to happen.
I have had two goats that got legs broken. I like you felt horrible about it but to my surprise they both healed on their own. I had horses before and a broken leg is a death sentence for them. I like the goats better!
@Samantha Grey
You beat me to that exact answer.
Tom Jones broken leg on a horse isn’t always a death sentence. The science behind getting them to heal is getting better every year. There are several racehorses with fractures that have been pinned or played that have healed beautifully. It really depends on where and how bad the break is. Barbaro is a good case to look at! Multiple fractures of the hind leg. Pasturn and cannon bone I do believe it was around 7 or 8 pieces. Basically a bad break. The owners elected to do surgery and he spent lots of time in a cast and sling as well as buckets of ice for the other feet. His death came not from the break but rather from supporting leg laminitis. His good hind leg fell apart months after the broken leg healed.
Thanks Samantha!! I'll take a video for my vet and see what he thinks too!
never the less, still a death sentence,
I won't claim to understand all the numbers but WOW 80% production sounds great! Good on you establishing thoughtful systems and sticking to them! "I'm so frickin lucky"... Forgive me being a tiny bit contrary...you MADE your own luck by your own sweat and tears, Ms Sandi! Congrats on the healthy productive season! Well-deserved!!
Yes, Sandi is a good wife! She is a support for Mark in the fields, raises sheep, and loves her children. Where would he be without you? Love to you all, Sandi, Mark, Jess and Jack. Congratulations on your lambs. God bless.
I love seeing you and Mark together
It's obvious you have a special relationship. Having the kids to help is necessary on small family operations.
It's been a rough year for everyone. This virus has wrecked havoc.
Thanks for the way you explain and teach. It's very informative.
Instablaster.
When breaks heal, it forms a “callus” where the fracture was. Takes about 6 weeks for complete healing. It will feel thickened as you run your fingers over it. The general rule of a long bone fracture is to immobilize the joint above and below the fracture. (ER doc here).
I love your vlogs because you explain everything perfectly. Send greetings from the mountainous part of Poland, the capital of sheep farming 🐏🐑
Thanks so much!
Lamb with the broken leg:
There’s going to be some muscle waste from the lack of use. You may have to do a little physical therapy every day for a few minutes; help extend the leg and get the muscles/ligaments stretched again.
(I’m a creeper) As I mentioned on Instagram, the knot of bone from the leg healing is expected. It can take months for the extra deposits to straighten out, heal and fade away.
Keep up the great work! 🐑

Its only has to live long enough to get to the butcher.
@@jimmyjohnstone5878 They still deserve a quality life and quality care up until that time
Plus, not too many ppl will jump to buy this lamb if he is limping in auction. They always think the worst, like a freshly broken leg, or foot rotting..
Need to fix the lamb as a way of life, not everything is money..
Thanks Sandi for being here for us! You have been here when I needed to take a chill pill! You are calm, you sheep are calm! The only one that seems high on life is your dog! And she is so fun to watch! Keep it up, we are not done yet! You are amazing and I love to keep up with you and all your babies!
Cherish this time with your kids...when I was 19/20 I went back home and lived with my dad for a year. Those memories mean so much to me now that he is gone!
Sandi, Congratulations on your lambs! You did do a lot of work and it shows! So glad that Betty is looking a little less blind! Much love to you and all your girls!! Love, Kristin Oklahoma
JUNE 16TH EVERYONE!!!! MORE ADORABLE BABIES COMING!!!
SOON!!!
It’s on my calendar! Lambing kit on the way .
Sandi, I salute you for explaining patiently in the hundred time, to new viewers, every step of your operation!!
It’s like tuning a kindergarten and showing love to the new children, every year as it’s the first time.. you must be special doing that!!
I promise I’m not stalking you but you’re the highlight of my day! You distract me from my stressful life. My kids and l love watching you. ❤️
Too kind! Thank you!!!
As do I. Love watching Sandi ❤️💞
We weren't able to ship lambs this spring, and our market in midwest USA went down the gutter. It went from $1.75lb to .85 for finished lambs (150lbs give or take). I've still got lambs that probably weigh around 175-185lbs just because we haven't been able to ship lambs. I'm really hoping that this fall the market turns around or it won't even cover the cost to feed the lambs and ewes through the year. Hopefully I don't have to sell all my ewes this fall!
Oh. Am hoping the price goes up soon. We need wool and lamb chops.
Ever time I watch one of your vlogs I'm taken back to my childhood and my what if. Farming is hard work. It's vital, honest, hard work that isn't recognized as often as it should be. I thank both of you for continuing to do a thankless job under difficult conditions during a year that produced enough crap to fertilize all the farmland in North America. May your livestock be healthy and your yields high.
I give this family and all farmers a 100percent....
In 2014 I was very sick and it set a stroke off. Watching this brings back memories of my time showing. I lost a lot from my past. But hearing and seeing the sheep.so thank you.
Husband has joined me the last few months in following your vlogs. He is from Scotland and in support we have started eating Ontario lamb again, me foolishly cooking a leg of lamb Hot Monday night in Southern most Ontario. We love your vlogs and the lamb kits we get at the grocery store is as close to me getting my own lambs. We had a small farm and were getting a larger one when one child's health meant we had to be closer to hospital, and once they left we didn't move fast enough on getting out of town. We just came back from our weekly Covid shopping, and went to a grocery store we usually don't frequent, in this METROpolitan area, and they were undercutting Ontario lamb with NZ lamb by $8 kg. which seemed hardly sporting... So despite our close farmer friends in NZ, we bought the Ontario lamb, because you have shown us the personal costs of sheep farming. Thank you.
So glad with all that’s going on that the lambs still did well! Hard work and brains paid off. Congratulations on having the planting done. Here is hoping for a good growing season.
I just wanna say I'm so proud of you! Way to go! You got this even when you think you don't. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with all of us!
Thank you. You and your videos are a great part of my evenings. I’m a farmer’s daughter, but professionally in social work. Your videos are always interesting and I don’t mind hearing things more than once.
You are so lucky , he listened , a timer for the special coffee in the morning ! Stay safe , Rock on ! Bob
I love your videos!!! They are always something that I look forward too!! You update so consistently!!
Thanks so much!
Yeah are empoyer did a great job still are at keeping use safe. I'm not in lamb but keeping the beef moving so many closed but because we have such a great organized environment we are going strong. Gave use extra money per hour and other incentives to keep use going so blessed. I'm glad to hear your still going strong keep up the great job the whole family. 🐂🐑🐮🐏🐃🐏🐮🐏🐂🐏🐑
Thanks for doing the necessary work for final consumer!
Love watching you do the chores. You are one busy lady.
I love to watch every video you make. You make me smile when my mood can be very bad. You have the biggest heart and smile. It makes my heart smile.
Love your videos. I really like the daily updates. Thank you for sharing your everything you do!! I know nothing about farming and I really like seeing your daily updates!
I'm glad that you were in the same range as last year.
Did she spill it in a glass? You know who she takes after.😊😊 just being able to market the lambs was a win, your increased production was the gravy. Good job!!!
you are normally clear and easy to follow.
God bless the essential workers including farmers and packers who were there for us all during the lockdown days. Still grateful!
I am so happy for you Sandi.I am happy you did well with your shipments.I love watching your channel and your husbands channel.I hope all goes well with your collaboration with Belinda.
Stay blessed!❤❤🐑❤❤
I love you, Sandy. I look forward to your vlogs but I admit, I hate weigh day and ship day. I'm a softy who wants to live in non-reality, that my food just magically appears at the market with no trauma involved. But alas, I do not so I am so grateful for farmers like you who feed me. Thank you for what you do and for being stronger than I ever could be. 💪
It’s so interesting to me to see how other farmers earn profit, so many lost during the pandemic and it’s so unfortunate. I run my own small hatchery and it went the total opposite, chicks couldn’t be shipped from large hatcheries during the quarantine so my sales went way up from people just trying to find babies somewhat local so they could pick up. Very happy to see you did well, love watching your channel!
Hello Sandi, all the hard work pay off great job!! Of course you are an awesome wife..love from Utah US. Love to watch your videos... keeps me sane
Thanks for explaining how COVID and quarantine affected you guys - it pays to have a plan and execute the plan - so happy your strong production paid off. - good for you, job well done 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 it nice when all your experience and focus on improving with every lambing pay off
Oh Sandi please be careful orf is so painful 😣 I know you’ve had it before so have I so please, please be careful. Ouch, 😣 ouch. God Bless you and your family. You are so wonderful and remind me of myself way way way back when I only had bum lambs however I was up every 2 hours out to our shed/ small barn through 3-4 foot snow drifts. With heavy coat flannel nite gown I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The real small ones I kept inour bathroom I would bleach down the bathroom every day when I got home from work. I worked at a donut shop went to work at 4-5 am got home usually at 12:30 pm. You take it easy when and if you can. Your a great family. Lol I always tell my husband when he tells me “ your old woman “ and I tell him “your always gonna be older me “ lol you guys crack me up. Take care hon from fan and friend from Wyoming. Ps. Love ❤️ my t-shirt.
Great video Mrs Sandi. Hard work always pays off. You are one hard working Lady. Plus your whole family
Awwee you and jess have a such good mother & daughter relationship
She's pretty sweet!
Love to see you smiling🤗
I love watching you lambing, not to keen where they go at 5 months old, loving your vlogs your so honest about your farming
Sandi, don’t forget about all the people you’ve provided food for during this trying time....bravo!!! 👏👏👏👏
It's not always the money that is the reward! You are always growing so a loss is really a gain from a different perspective
Welcome, thank you for all your efforts.
Ms. Brock:
Your statement “Managing risk is so important” reminded
me of something my grandfather told me back in 1968 when I started college. He
never netted more than $15,000 US off his farm in his life.
He said, there are four ways to make money in ag. Own
stock is a seed company or own stock in a fertilizer company or own the ground
and share crop it or become a vet. Cousin became a vet. I went the share crop
and stock ownership route.
May you have good luck, fair skies and success with your
flock
Respectfully,
WS
Way to go Sandi, nother good vid, hope garden doesn't get neglected when you're busy and it's hot and dry.
Dear Sandi, if you read this, kindly please repeat and explain. it helps for us to learn the system time and time again. Thank you, we love you!
Love your positive attitude!! 💗💜💗💜
Been waiting for this video all day another awesome vid love watching you girl you do one hell of a job please keep the videos coming makes my day god bless take care
Awesome on numbers I do demolition when this hit no cities in the state did demo, i was lucky the work I picked up at the end of 2019, has pulled me threw
Congratulations on your sheep. That was a great report.I say Praise God! God bless you from Michigan
Every body should go buy some lamb chops and help the sheep market grow . Make sure you buy Ontario grown ,there is a lot of off shore meat that comes into the Ontario market .Ontario is still a net importer of lamb so there is room for our growers to grow if you buy their product
Thank you Sandi! We get our first ram lamb the second week of June. You are such an insperation.
I am so proud of you. One of my post pandemic goals is to meet my favorite UA-cam people and in your case also get some lamb. It probably won’t happen but it is a fun dream. If you are ever in Seattle reach out if you need anything.
SANDI SANDI SANDI
As I mentioned you have done a great job. As you know there are variables you have no control over. In spite of the virus and economic changes your stats were actually better! BUT what you can change is how you react to it all! As is said it's not what happens it's how we react. So then look back at all the stress and upset You caused yourself for absolutely no reason. Except stress problems for your body and mind maybe! So hopefully keep that confidence you finally started to have listen to yourself and act not letting doubt second guess yourself and be thankful for the good things and seek the positive bright spot in the negative!! Keep doing your plans stick with them unless slight adjustments are needed and remember every moment every lamb no matter what you're blessed to be living your passion and doing it because you love it!!!!
I've been there learned that and finally lived it so I do really hope these lessons help you too as they have for me. You hopefully have alot of years and lambs ahead of you and also as it is said it's the journey that counts most of all not just the destination. I know you can do all those things if you keep your brain and emotions under control.
I so hope for your journey to be satisfying fulfilling and happy. You're a wonderful human a super woman and a conscience caring shepherd! And the best friend a person could ever hope for.
God bless...
Congrats for the good year. You have worked hard for it.
Nice to see people who do things for love!!

Well done Sandi. Hope it continues for you. Enjoy your beverages Brock family.

You are a practical person and you have a strong personality. I love the women who really like you congratulate you for the diligence I have reached and I wish you success( saida chahbouni in morocco)
I'm so glad you guys are doing ok
Love you! I don't regret anything!
We are sooooo happy for you too..
Hey Sandi. I love your channel. I work at a pig processing plant near Kitchener. We stayed open the whole time except for one week at the end of April so they could step up the safety precautions.
Love watching your vlogs. I would love to see one of your upcoming replacement ewes be followed like Billy. I’ve enjoyed seeing him grow up & would love to see a ewe’s story too.
Danke für deine Nachricht ich habe mich gefreut da war der abend wider mal schön♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Regarding Orf, or as we call it Scabbers (well before Harry Potter). My Grandma drilled it into our heads growing up that as soon as we saw this on any Lamb, Ewe, udder or Ram, we had to report it immediately. We would have to quarantine any affected animal or animals. The scabs that they rub off because it itches are Very contagious. If those scabs are in your pack it can spread like wildfire. I really hope this helps you Sandi.
I know this is like three years late, but I'm on a mission to watch all of your vlogs in order, it takes me back to my childhood.
Honestly it's vids like these that remind me that Jess is only a year older than me. Like, she's such a mood 24/7 but man do I do those same weird things
Ever thought about painting a line on the finishing barn door or hanging a tennis ball for something to aim at? Hanging a ball works great in a barn when parking trailers.
Adding driveway reflectors outside areas to back trailers into. I usually use the flexible ones and put a couple on each side of where I want the trailer to end up
Wtg Sandi...nice to hear you did well xoxox
You are a team! Good to each other ... best friends. I don’t envy the celebs and their hunky husbands who run off at the first sign of challenge. We long-term wives have it best!
2020 is too early to tell! Dont get discouraged! I like it when the sheepies go for a ride!
OMG I am now watching you and Mark and wanna see you both do awesome this year with all the set backs we have all faced, saw that Mark made out with the frost
usully you got to look at quality over quantity but this year you got BOTH! got to love when that happens😄 your lambs always look good and this time you got the numbers to boost it all and stay in the green...I say that deserves one heck of a toast and celebration! keep doing you and it will work out in the end Sandie....and I hear you about HOT...but Colorado has been getting rain/snow this past week pending on where you look!
Mark- "I wonder where she gets that from?" What a stinker...lol
Awesome video 😀
Well done on your lessons learned and action taken to make the improvements to better your business ! 👏😀😀 Learning how to better manage the parts that you can control are valuable lessons for all of us.... personal and professional.
Thank you ❤️
Great lambing season. Enjoyed all your efforts.
Hi Sandi, another great video! I was thinking a fun side project might be to let the rams eat your front lawn on a rotation schedule. Wooly lawnmowers. 😁 Thanks for all your hard work.
Hey Sandy, even though it’s funny to see you speculate weather you backed the trailer right, to save time of trial and error, how about Spray painting markers on the driveway that you can see in your rear view. Make em long so you can see if you are square to the barn!!! Like hacks rule!!!
You both are such a cute couple! And both work so very hard.
its normal for the bone build up after a break, and it is also normal for a little bit of muscle atrophy and joint stiffness it takes time to rebuild muscle and loosen up the joint some range of motion therapy would be a great benefit
" I'm old I'm allowed to be spoiled" LMBO....EXACTLY WHAT MY HUBBY SAYS!!!
Your reverse parking is sweet
Jess just keeps getting prettier every video!
Well done! I don’t know anything about your farming & all, but I love watching your vlogs! 🤗❤️
Great job with your production Sandi Could you have made more money without the global problem we’re having? Maybe! But to be as successful as you were says a great deal about your attention to details and your love for what you do!👍
Hiii! You can shine a light from for example your phone in the "blind" sheep its eye. If the pupil goes from large to small, she can still see. If the pupil stayes large, she cant see with that eye.
The thickness you feel in the lambs leg is calcium. It builds a thickening over the break and makes it stronger. I broke my leg 8 yrs ago. I can still feel the thickened area over the break
The last three days in WI, it’s been in the high 80°f feeling like low 90°f - mid 90°f. Today it’s finally raining, and in the 70°f and I’m thanking the lord. Haha but now we might flood!
You are going to have to get the wool off the Ram's too help cool them down.. still love watching hope you guys have a great year..
You are such an inspiration
That was good, stop. Love you Sandi. God Bless.
If you spot the orf early when it's just a few spots try idodine and a sponge! Sunlight's the best to get rid of it, but the iodine definitely helps stop the spread of you catch it in time
Ok. Been watching almost a year now. Catching up on the older stuff. Still a long way to go and no. Do not know what the alarm is for, but am thinking maybe soon will know.
Love the little lambs and the sheep. You just krtp making these videos and i will keep trying to find them. Lol. No am not smart enough about my phones yet to know hiw to just go to the videosi want to watch. No worry though. Will eventually get there.
God bless
I laughed out loud at those rams in front of the fan! I'll bet they wish they were sheared. Sandi, you're a wonderful wife!
Love watching your videos Sandy.
Congratulations on 300+ videos.
I was watching Tom Pemberton's (UK farmer) videos and got a suggestion to watch your videos.
I've loved learning from you about sheep and the crops you do with Mark.
Living in Ottawa, Ontario, your videos help me understand more about what is going on at our favourite museum: Canadian Agriculture & Food Museum.
Thanks for the insights!
Michael Suddard love Tom and the ginger warrior with the moo-stache. I also watch Dale Farm.
Dont worry about the stifnes of the joint...that is normal... of can take up to several weeks before its back to normal...
I really enjoyed this video today!!! Thanks for yet another amazing day of sharing your life with us!! Too bad you're not keeping Billy's sister :( She's so gorgeous, and would make a beautiful replacement ewe. Hard to believe we're at the end of may already!!! This year is almost half gone... where did it go??
My days are complete with Sandi and her Sheep!!!
