You don't use an OD pedal or anything with your Recto's? Just got a Roadster and main that thing needs an OD in front of it. I have a Diezel VHX and Mark VII which I don't really use a boost much unless I am on the Hagen or Herbert modes. Cheers!
The only Recto I've had that did NOT need a boost was the Rev C. All others require it for metal. That said, I don't always use it for demoing if you want to just hear the amp since boosts all add their own flavor.
A little bit of EQ in the loop can be good. In this case, a LITTLE BIT. Just because the mid slider goes all the way down doesn't mean you need to suplex it from the top turnbuckle to slam it down into the earth's very core and then break the godamn knob off. A Recto is already mid scooped. If you're going to cut mids, cut a LITTLE BIT of mids.
The problem I have with this video is that he adjusts his head eq before he turns 5 band on but never adjusts again after 5 band is turned on, which would make a big difference. The 5 band is supposed to be used to help shape the tone, not be the tone. After you get the eq set then you shape your tone with the head eq and then yes it does a great job just like Mesa intended it to do.
Wow I’ve read such great things about that EQ but this vid, every time that eq went on it sounded like blah. Thanks for the video dude. I play rectos live and I end up bumping my mids on the amp quite a bit more than other folks I see doing it. Crazy when I was a teen I would’ve been nuts over a metal zone like tone.
The Recto is naturally kinda scooped. An EQ in the loop is a good idea even to scoop a bit, but it should be set more subtly. Scoop, but don't scoop as much. To make the absolute most of that awesome rig though, you'll want a boost before you hit the input, one that can cut some bass from the guitar.
You're right about boosting the input, however for tone vids I like to go straight in (usually) so that people can get a sense of what the gear sounds like on its own. I boost some recto vids, but not all, for this reason. I always boost in the band mix, though.
I agree I just dont Recto's need a EQ in the loop- though would be interesting to hear what it would sound like sans the infinity bass bump on the EQ - as we all know Recto's have a lot of inherent low end. Great vid man! Keep 'em coming!
THE tone I would dial the amp is dial off the bass and have the mids at 2 and dial the treble at 1 or two o'clock and set the five band in a v shape but don't dial the settings over the middle.
You’re over driving the power section, which is another reason it doesn’t sound great. Turn the gain on the pedal down with the bass cranked up, or don’t use such an aggressive V. You could also put the pedal in front of the preamp for a better/different results.
I think you’re right the eq pedal with an extreme V scoop setting doesn’t sound great. I think you could maybe use the eq in a more subtle way to finely shape your sound if you you were recording for example but that would be a very specific need.
I tried this with the same setup. I was surprised, there was very little range when running the pedal out front. The sliders did almost nothing. I could give it a little suck or boost overall but no real tone shaping. Definitely not worth its own vid, sorry..
Yeah using an eq to scoop an already super scooped amp isn't gonna yield good results xd.. But damn it almost sounds like a mark when you push the mids with the eq!
..Because someone asked me to do this demo? I don't care for it like this. What I do use the 5 band for in the Recto loop is actually for a solo boost where I do the frowny-face EQ.
@@TIGHTENmetal I was planning on getting one to get some pushed mids and maybe get a more Marshall kind of tone. Think this would do the trick. Was gonna put el 34nin her but I think a get more bang for my buck with a EQ.
@@roberthickman2953 It does push it a bit in that direction. Check out this clip where I turn it on for the solo in a frowny-face pattern to push the mids & bump the volume. ua-cam.com/video/An8iVt_GJpE/v-deo.html
MIKE WALTERS on the amp there’s only a send on the back and it was high ish. On the pedal you can see it’s send and return levels, they were mid level. You can see the other levels on the front knobs.
I use a boost and a 10 band EQ with my recto and its balls to the wall metal, without the boost and 10 band graphic EQ it is so dry and anorexic, it's like....this amp is famous for metal?
Rec + 5 band = metal zone
The addition really does fizz it up.

I can't tell if this is the old recto with a parallel loop or a new one serial. If it's parallel, then it's not going to be optimal anyway.

With my Rectos now I just use that pedal for a mid boost / solo volume bump. It works well for this.
Sounds better without the eq, I think
I agree. IMO the GEQ detracts from the tone and makes it fizzy.

I think the EQ in the loop works okay on channel 2 if you wanna scoop a little. It also depends on the sound your trying to go for.

Try doing some Metallica settings with your Recto!
thnx for the demo, if you had the 80/6600 sliders flat(middle position)and the others v it will be sounding much more balanced...
Hey a little confused as to why set it up scooped ? wouldn't be better pulling some of the bass out to tighten it up ?
It's because you're old!
Really, things that can be altered by turning the knobs are irrelevant. I like to focus on the differences that are inherent.
I think you’re right the eq pedal with an extreme V scoop setting doesn’t sound great.

Yeah, lately I like the pedal better with the Recto as a slight mid boost for leads.
Completely sucks the tone out in my opinion. Can you do a demo of the eq pushing the front end of the amp?

Why would you scoop the mids out and enhance the bass of an already mid scooped and bass heavy amp maybe I missed something?

How did you mix the send and return?

The boost is the important part.
Sounds like shit with the mids scooped on the amp.
