- Hey guys, had a request to compare the Dual Recto Multi-Watt to the Mark V in extreme mode, so I went ahead & compared all three channels. Just a couple simple riffs, each dialed in to sound good in the room. Check it out! Each definitely has their own character. Note the Mark V has EL34 in it.
Mark V fat 1:56
Recto clean 2:30
Mark V crunch 3:04
Recto orange vintage 4:22
Mark V extreme 5:44
Recto red modern 6:37
Very Useful, and really appreciate the close up of the settings as we all know how sensitive the controls are (well, on my 2007 DR):)
Must said, Dual Recto Multi-Watt sounds much more classy! Great video!
Nice.
I definitely prefer the Mark V, but the Recto is still very nice sounding.
I prefer the Rectifier’s darker sounding cleans though.
Thanks for the settings close-ups! I tried your settings on my Mini Recto, and loved them! I feel validated for liking my clean channel crazy bright hah
God bless you for stopping by this comment, and may your entire family prosper in all areas
Very cool.
Thank you :)
This is Tim O from the Mesa group :)
I think I like the Mark V best overall, but it's a close call :-)
@@AC5SH They really do different things, and they are both extremely versatile. On the flip side they don't do "that one tone" as well as their vintage counterparts.
Couple of cheeky cosmetic mods on the Dual Rec👌 Have dome the same with mine- purple jewel light, but the Lone Star knobs instead (black for channels 2 & 3, and cream for channel 1). Cheers for the video & stay safe in these strange times!
I always loved the Mark series tone. I grew up on James Hetfield's tone. So I always preferred that tone for my own playing. The Recto's not my thing, but Cannibal Corpse sound amazing using them. Each to their own. Great video.
The Mark V is more upper mid focused, so it sounds more defined. The Mark V would be a more suitable for classic rock as well as metal. The Rectifier seems more bottom focused but slightly less versatile in this test, but sounds great though. I've seen other comparisons between the two amps in the past and the answers are still the same. Great video; thanks.
Love em both! 🔥
Definitely like the sound of the Mark V in most cases (might have liked Mouth of War on the Dual a little bit more). IMO, using an overdrive petal with a (dual/triple) rectifier is must, especially if you want modern tight metal sound. A simple pedal makes the rectifiers go from muddy to magical.
You are correct. I actually also like a boost on the V, where I don't on most Marks. The V is the least gainy Mark since the IIC+.
At any rate, it's also important to know what the amp sounds like on its own. I think a lot of guys buy an amp and expect to just plug in & get XYZ sound they're heard, and that's usually not the case.
@@TIGHTENmetal I like boosting the Mark V with a transparent clean boost. Or just using a guitar with very hot pickups.
Ya they sound way too nasally and weak without a boost
I own a mk v. Would like to have a recto someday. Good comparison. I thought clean channel went to the mk v. Middle channel went to the recto, and I’m not sure about channel 3. I would have to get a recto next to a mk v and tweak the heck out of both amps.
I have both of them,it’s really really great sounds
Cool vid dude 👍
How did you find switching in EL34 on the V? Super tempted to do it
Same as all the Boogies, I dig it in the band but prefer 6L6 at home. Good to have options!
Awesome vid. The fretbuzz is murder though. I've been trying to decide between these 2 amps which one to purchase. I'm leaning dual rec.
They are both amazing, and do different things. I prefer Marks for playing at home & tracking leads. Tracking rhythms depends on the song. I refer Rectos for playing in the band.
@@TIGHTENmetal Try raising the action on your guitar a little more. That’s what I did with my Flying V; Usually, V-type guitars sound better with the action a little higher.
I was always a Dual Rec guy until I got a Mark V... now there's no going back for me. It was the tone I always tried to get and never could.
The correct answer is one of each. :)
@@TIGHTENmetal True enough! I do still love the Recto, but I just can't get as into it anymore.
I've owned roadster since 08 and love the 4 channels but its not a Mark V. There is something about that amp that just can't be duplicated. Its got that heavy thick crunch that sounds so great and the cleans are pristine. This will be my next amp. As much as i dig the recto sound it doesn't have the rich harmonic distortion that Mark has IMHO.
@@Col.JohnMatrix Exactly! I love both but I find I get bored with the Recto more easily than the Mk V.
Mark V for the win
The Mark V and really all the Mark series from IIC+ onward are the crowning achievement Mesa Amps. The Dual Rectifier? I know people love it and it defined the later 90s sound but it was never a favorite of mine, too muddy and limited in it's range. It can get a nice sound and you got a nice tone here with it, but by and large, it's just not a versatile amp.
The Mark V Is the clear winner in my opinion
The 2 channel Rectos are not very versatile, but the Multi-Watt (with a boost on tap) is extremely versatile & perhaps my favorite "everything" amp. The V is slightly more versatile but a lot harder to dial in.
Oh Van Del Hul instrument cable? Killer man. I can difintaly hear the difference between Evidence Lrics HG and them.
Since the Metallica days caught my eye, I’ve always been a fan of the Mark Series tones.
You’re a big fan of the Mark V:35 I’ve seen. Do you still prefer it over the full sized Mark V?
If you want tone, yes, the 35 is better. The V has more options & bigger balls, though. I'd prefer the V for gigging for that reason.
@@TIGHTENmetal Could you explain this a little more....why does the Mark V 35 have better tone than the Mark V? Great demo, BTW. Both sound great. I used to have the Mark V and miss it.
Rectifier wins!!
Both
Hmm maybe im good with my mark V. No need for the dual rectifier at the moment.
For me taste… Mark V is “The Amp”
Hey man, are you using a boost in front of the Red Channel on the Dual Rec here? Sorry if I missed it somewhere if you said if you were. That thing sounds really damn good, unlike most I've heard while researching between it and the Mark V
In this sample, no boost. The Hanneman is an aggressive guitar, though. The Mult-Watt is a killer amp.
@@TIGHTENmetal Damn, alright. Thats amazing. I was pretty set on the Mark. But wasnt really looking forward to all the dialing they need. May go the Dual Rec route. You said in another question of mine, it would fight better in a band setting anyway. Thanks for all these vids man. Really helping
@@TIGHTENmetal I play a 58 LP Ressue and a PRS Custom 24 Floyd. In the PRS, it has their "Metal" pickups and its their highest output set. I would think that would be a killer combo with a Dual Rec
@@triston2010 You're welcome! The Recto is easy to dial. Set all the knobs at noon and tweak to preference. Play.
The Mark on the other hand I've spent hours trying to find the tone I like. When you find it it's epic, but you can spend more time dialing than playing.
I haven't played a TC yet, but I think they might be a good middle ground if you're not all-metal.
@@triston2010 I have a friend with a Strat that killed it with my Tremoverb. All Recs are good, the power is in your hands.
Any chance you can blend these two together? In the market for both. Planning on running EL34s in the Recto and letting the MKV do the 6L6 thing with tighter low end. Use the EL34s to fill in the mid range of the 6L6s.
Sorry man, both have been sold!
By any chance have you ever tried Celestion Alnico Cream speakers with any of your Marks?
Never have, sorry.
I had a multi watt dual rec for years. It’s a great amp but I always felt it was too flubby on modern mode. Even with a Maxon OD 808 in front it was still not tight enough. The mark V blows it out of the water. Way more versatile in every way and tighter while still maintaining the aggressive tone. The multi watt vintage mode was amazing though. But the Mark V is the best amp I’ve ever played.
What cab? Obviously Rectos are looser than Marks, but on bold / diode / modern with a boost & a traditional (not OS) cab you can get them pretty darn tight- in their own way- which is to say its still not the same as a Mark.
appreciate the comparison but I didn't like the sound of either amp
does your mark V have an AT7 in V4 or ax7 ?
12AX7. If I was anything other than a metal guy I might prefer the AT7 mod.
@@TIGHTENmetal well it sounds killer, so i wouldnt change a thing. just wondering
Frett buzz needs fixing.
This is a metal guitar. I value fast, low action over a little fret buzz. High action bugs the shit out of me. YMMV.
@@TIGHTENmetal you prefer to avoid pointless obstacles?
@@chavruta2000 You know, if people relaxed a little & weren't so militant about pushing their personal agendas on others through pressure & ridicule society might be in a better place.
@@TIGHTENmetal well at least we both have the good taste to use mesa boogie
