MG4 SE - Longer Journey Performance

  • Having taken delivery of a new MG4 SE (the entry level model) in mid February, 2023, I wanted to take it on a longer-than-usual journey, driving it at exactly the same speeds I would drive an internal combustion engine car, to establish for myself the kind of range it can provide on that basis.

    Finally someone 'testing' an EV and driving normally! I always drive up to speed limits when it's safe to do so and have the aircon on. In my MG5 I can and have turned off the LKA permanently, but I do use MG Pilot on motorways, which requires you to signal to change lanes in order to avoid the car braking, whilst still requiring full concentration at all times. I entirely agree with all your conclusions, although I don't have the benefit of phosphate batteries. Great and informative video, thanks!

    I had a perfectly good ev and had no intention of changing until MG announced the MG4 with LFP (and VTL). I would have considered a trophy if it had the option of LFP, they do in other markets. My lane assist doesn't reset to on every time the car is restarted, I'm surprised yours does. My car needed to go to the garage for warranty work for a week (wind noise from door quarter light) and I was given a ZS EV courtesy car, Pilot was set t o on and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. On the MG4 it's lethal in my opinion so I never use it. The wind noise - its. taken 4 months to resolve and finally fixed by with a complete new drivers door! Hats off to MG (and my local garage) for their persistence in honouring their warranty.

    Really good test drive covering all the things that a prospective buyer might be wondering about or should be considering. The OEMs that survive the transition to electrification will sell directly to us, not through dealers, so impartial information rich content like this (thanks James and Kate, Kyle and Bjorne) is all the more appreciated Geoff

    Spot on! We have lane keeping assistance, and turned it off shortly after discovering that our car had it turned on when first delivered to us. It's been turned off ever since. That 'facility' is both annoying and distracting. Maybe even dangerous in some circumstances.
    The MG4 seems to be a very capable vehicle for the price, and those LFP cells inspire confidence in the longevity of the car. Wishing you many happy miles of driving.

    I have an MG4 - agree entirely with you ref the lane keep assist - It's a pain. Another reviewer described it well - said it was like an over confident teenage learner driver....... :-) I went for the Trophy because I make regular 250 mile trips and the added range makes a difference to journey times.

    I have an MG4 SE from the 1st batch in September (we got free tinted rear windows) - loving the car - particularly the drive, completly agree with you with LKA, however on mine it stayed turned off (I dont know why as others have said that they need to turn it off every time they get into the car, but on mine it stays off)

    Hi. I'm from Portugal and a big advise please. Between 50kw or the 64kw to my country temperature, more warmer on winter and summer... And a user of Opel ampera, or vauxhall ampera... What do you think about the chemistry Vs range is it big? And for the last is a big difference to the ZS EV? Does it have a different chemistry on the size of battery? Thanks for the help!

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  Рік тому

      Hi Sérgio and thanks for your comment.
      I think the choice of battery chemistry is going to be entirely dependent on your personal circumstances. I think it's wiser to choose a range in an EV which covers the driving you commonly do. I think it's unwise to buy based on exceptional journeys, personally. You end up paying a lot more for little benefit!
      For me, the LFP battery was a big selling point in itself. If the long range or trophy had had it, I still wouldn't have considered them, because the SE covers our regular long journey easily.
      I suspect the reason that the long range and trophy don't have LFP is because it's not as dense a chemistry at the moment. In other words, they can't fit as much capacity in the same space.
      I liked the ZS and our second daughter now owns it as her car and also very much likes it. However, I like the look and low profile of the MG4 too.
      But for me, the ability to do our regular longer journey of around 160 km to visit family easily without stopping to charge was the main motive to purchase. Indeed, we've already done that journey subsequent to me filming this and we arrived with 41% of the battery still remaining.

    Try running the car using the TJA function rather than LKA. It remembers this setting and seems less problematic just giving the odd kick when near a white line. Beware that pressing the LH button on the steering wheel though will activate this mode. I would be interested on how you go on with this as I leave my car in this setting and never afjust anything prior to driving.

      @jtchivers  Рік тому

      @@redjohn20001 No I didn't, John. I like the ACC mode, so tend to use that. I have tried TJA, but that goes full-on MG Pilot for me.
      Perhaps I misunderstood. Are you saying that if it's put in TJA mode, the mode stays off on restart and only kicks in when you press the steering wheel button?

      It's weird. I consider going somewhere special to purchase fuel a massive inconvenience, but so many people put up with it. Much easier to plug in at home in an evening (takes seconds) and get up to a car which has been climate conditioned/defrosted and charged on cheap overnight tariff or during the day, from solar.
      The load in the car is going to make a tiny difference to range. I did 105 miles at mostly motorway speeds to my in-laws after this trip with the car full and arrived with 41% battery remaining after 2 hours 15 mins' driving.
      I believe in practising what I preach and I'm ready for a stop after a couple of hours' driving.

    Hint: normalise the volume of speech vs music. 😉 (I had to turn it up to hear you, but then the music blasted out)
    I agree 100% re. LKA though ... however NCAP rules dictate that assist systems must cater for the lowest common denominator; i.e. the utter numpty driver. 🙄

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  Рік тому +2

      I did normalise it, but I agree, there is a difference in level.🤷‍♂
      That NCAP stuff is backward. It will absolutely cause accidents. Here's the thing. If someone starts a journey and it suddenly activates because they forgot to turn it off (as happened to me last night), the driver WILL take their attention off the road to turn it off on the screen.

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  Рік тому +2

      I only needed to charge once on this trip, while I was having breakfast. I planned that stop before I left home, so it was my decision to stop there. The second stop was a trip out to the Baffle Haus with my mate. I didn't charge there. The third stop was a pee stop. I don't always get to choose when nature kicks in, but I had planned to get a coffee while stopped, so plugged in to charge anyway. As mentioned, I didn't need to charge there.

      Works fine for me. I prefer the battery chemistry, don't need long range, and actively don't want in-car navigation. I'll take the lower price tag and my preference for those things. If I needed it, adding light in the back is trivial. Always have a small torch anyway.
