i love how he’s so positive about these games and in the process of giving a chance discovers some games that should be so much more popular then they are
One of the games you played before called "death's gambit" was completely redesigned in a free update. They claim the map is twice as big a the old one, they redid the talent tree and a whole lot more. I thought it might be fun to go back and see if they fixed your complaints.
I played and finished the game pre and post update and the post update definitely did a lot to make the game feel better to play and explore. It definitely is bigger now, and the new levels help flesh the game out for me. I found it an improvement in almost every way and it made the game go from a game I thought was enjoyable but very jank to a game that I think is pretty great. Makes me curious what he would think of it too.
@@lane3574 CrossCode easily became my favorite Indie game ever. It's in my top 5 favorite games. I still remember finding its demo around the summer of 2016 on GameJolt. I thought its art style was really cute, and I thought it was interesting. So I made a mental note of it. I, by complete chance, came across it again in 2018 or 2019 on Steam after it had been fully released. I decided to pick it up for myself. I played it while waiting for Fire Emblem: Three Houses to come out in 2019, nearly three years exactly from the day I discovered the game. I beat it in a few days and fell in love with it. I wasn't very good at the time tho. I had to put on all the bitch-mode settings. When the DLC came out for the game, I replayed the entire thing and 100%ed everything I could outside of the arena (I technically got 100%, but I still had unfinished fights in some of the DLC matches) Best thing I learned from that playthrough? I got way better at the game. Never needed to make it easier or anything. Some of the later puzzles were so brutal but so satisfying to complete. I'm so fucking happy CrossCode is getting the attention it rightly deserves. It's a masterwork.
"Art Direction" is what really carries a whole lot of these games, isn't it? Even with basic or even slightly clunky controls, a solid and cohesive art direction can really keep you enraptured That being said, if the gameplay is completely borked, then not even solid art direction can save you.
Perhaps why many people bounce off Unsighted despite the great game design/features? It's gaudy. Not as bad as A Valley Without Wind, but it's up there. Also looks like a cheap Hyper Light Drifter clone. That's probably as far as most people get..
@@aFewBitsShort Hyper Light Drifter first came to mind when I saw the game (you can tell I'm a fan from my profile pic xD), but I'd say there are a lot of things Unsighted did a lot of things better.
as big of an impact as art direction has, to me a game could be the video game equivalent of the Mona Lisa but if the combat or gameplay loop is shallow or bad I'll probably not play it. But that's the thing about Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 (not remastered), the art direction and general tone of the game is so good that the mediocre/bland gameplay loop is excused. The vision and the whole lightning-in-a-bottle thing Fromsoft happened upon is just fantastic in my world. Meanwhile a game with great art direction but somewhat terrible gameplay loop (the not-so pixel perfect platforming especially) like Ori 1 makes it difficult for me to get into it and learning the mechanics properly enough to finish the game. Obviously, this is a very subjective thing for many people. Some people can finish a game for the worldbuilding in one game, while they might not be able to stomach another game which caters to a different style of game or a different story being told.
@@Alberich_Prince_of_Dwarves for me The Witcher 3 combat was terrible. So I put it on easy and played for the story and player choices. Compared to Souls where I play for the gameplay and challenge, taking on bosses while underleveled.

Wow I'm extremely hyped for enchained. The moment I saw the surfing literally my jaw dropped. Getting the demo and cant wait for a full release, how has this escaped the internet??
"Blade of Darkness" got re-released (and for the first time released on Steam!) in October 2021. The game is from 2001 - a decade before Souls, and it wasn't managed well, the studio went bankrupt, but the few lucky fans who played it back then built somewhat of a niche cult following. And many of them swear that this game is the true predecessor of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, due to countless similarities in the combat system and level design (and no, those weren't the same way in King's Field!). Now on Steam the game has "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating - which is kind of amazing for a game that is 20 years old. Blade does have some janky-ness, which is still there, but that's really part of its charm. Despite the fact most people who tried it appraise it, I don't think the game is nearly as famous among Souls fans as it should be. Not sure if it fully qualifies the theme of "games you've never heard of", but I bet 90% of viewers haven't heard of it still. I wholeheartedly recommend it for this series - and I hope you'd enjoy it! It's worth a full playthrough, even though it's a difficult and unforgiving game with a lot of tricks to learn to fully appreciate it.
Wow, you're right, someone released it on Steam/GoG and has been patching it for a bit. Crazy. Was definitely one of the gems of the early 2000's. Such a good and more unique experience back then, brutal and hardcore too, but going back now it's gonna be hard to get passed all the jank, especially if you want (or need) to use a controller. I'll probably watch someone play it through vs go at it myself, but that string might tug at me too much..
Unsighted is one of those rare games made with passion that sadly didn't get the attention it deserves, I'm glad someone is praising it because it was one of my favorite indies of this year
I think the best thing you do is give everything an honest chance and take into account the context of the realistic expectations that both the creator and the consumer would have for the game. I would never have given cube cube more then 3 minutes of my time.
Damn. Unsighted looks like right up my alley. I love this series so far. Tons of good recommendations. I think the developers also like it. The coverage is free, honest and a good advertisment for their games.
Enchain actually looks sick as hell and I'm actually excited to see how they improve it! They're delaying it to next year, but I feel like art should be taken slow and steady, so it'll definitely be better this way. BTW Badass vids dude! Love the meme games you play on these lol
@Miles Doyle Numbers 31: 17, 18. I'll pass on your psychotic lunatic of a God. And all the perverted con artists who claim to hear his voice. At least Cthulu generally keeps to himself, unless you go messing with the supernatural. Why can't your evil God be that considerate? I mean, I understand this incoherent Bronze age nonsense is how you express your BDSM kink (and the community LOVES the whole temptation/demonic torture dynamic), but do try to work some safe words and age of consent into the mythology? Otherwise, I can't be held responsible if your soul winds up in Hell, or whatever.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 soooo, you don't believe in God.... But you don't want to be responsible for "his soul ending up in hell or whatever"??? You are just mad you can't write a coherent thought, and believe in nothing let alone recite accurately anything from memory. All you got is "at least Cthulhu (which you didn't even spell correctly) keeps to himself". I'm sure billions of people will hold H.P. Lovecraft's fictional character from his 1926 "The Call of Cthulhu" in high regard as a diety in a couple thousand years. Do better.
Getting Unsighted tomorrow! I've had it recommended enough times now to go through with it. I love these videos a lot, and the Van Gogh game looked beautiful. So much gold in the Steam dumpster.
@@yowamushi6666 dont listen to him, he's just a person who think that the devs are "woke", only because of some themes the game have. The Devs are from Brazil, and they deserve a lot of attention.
I think the big thing is that a lot of people probably get put off by the time mechanic. People really just don't like being timed and I don't think the turning that mechanic off is advertised enough. Then for the people who do know you can turn it off a portion probably just realize you're losing a huge aspect of the design and theme of the game by doing so (I personally fall here). Just every discussion I see about this game is about its use of time and how the games themes revolve around it. It's been in my wishlist for a while, but I don't think I'm ever gonna take it out. It's fine the game isn't for me and others. Sad though that it will lose them sales because I truly do believe the reviews that the game is good.
It looks to me like 'There is No Light' makes the mistake of having it's collision actually hit with anything that collides on-screen given the perspective, but while it's a 2D game, it has a 3D world and the collision should take that into account.
Literally the only reason I’m leaving this comment is because you said there’s a pretty good chance you’ll read it. I want to thank you for the hours of work you put behind these videos and also the gems you uncover. UNSIGHTED seems like a really cool game and I’m super glad you showed it us!
I love that Unsighted has a way to turn off the character timing. Even though its the main gimmick, it gives players a chance to experience this great game without all that stress
When all the people turned yellow, referencing Van Gogh eating the yellow paint that assisted with his madness, I got major chills and teared up a little :o
Might be neat to do a retrospective on some of the early-access games you covered in the beginning of this series-see if they took off, fixed the problems you had with them, or died/faded into obscurity
Honestly, these videos have shown me actually cool games when everything that comes out lately has just been lackluster. Enchain and Unsighted are the two games that I'm very interested in now. So thank you so much for making these videos :)
I love this fucking series man, as someone who's interested in someday creating a game it's nice to see someone taking their time to give an honest and profound review with some feedback. Keep it up!
Really nice seeing you stick with this series. Whenever I'm 'in between' games or looking for a game to fill some time, this is where I go to get some ideas.
I think this vid is one of your best in the series. Lots of successes in terms of game quality and just the energy of it almost lets us inhabit your enjoyment (particularly for #2)
i really appreciate how despite the thumbnail lure of this series being "time to TEAR IN to the WORST GARBAGE that TALENTLESS SCHMUCKS have put up on steam!!!" the actual content is like, actually engaging with the games on their own terms, even the obviously extremely janky ones, and talking about what they do right in addition to where they fall short and the places they show potential. it's like, *almost* kinda clickbait-y, but the bait and switch is into kindness and thoughtful genuine engagement and good vibes so i'm fine with it
I have to admit, I typically end up finding a lot of these games on my own, but you always have a few I have never stumbled across before. Still I love hearing what you have to say about each game and that helps me decide what I should play for myself (or validates my opinion, like with There is no Light, total agreement).
I love these videos. There's so many soulslike games out there and most people won't bother to play, or even know about, the majority of them. You find some hidden gems for us and you give unbiased reviews. I also love the enthusiasm and genuine passion. Thank you for doing what you do.
I played the demo of Unsighted and generally enjoyed it. However what made me take a step away from it and remove it from my wishlist was the knowledge that there's a time limit to your gameplay. I really, really, really dislike being forced to rush. I like exploration and taking my time. That said, I did *NOT* know you can turn it off, so I'll be adding this back into my wishlist.
I'm the same way with the time mechanic. However, I'm still really torn on getting it because I know the time mechanic is a huge point of the game about making choices about the time and a bunch of the themes live off that and the mechanic existing. So I'm losing a huge aspect of the game by actually turning it off.
@@lifetake3103 Yeah that's a good point. I dunno. I'll wishlist but whether or not I get it remains unclear for now. Other than that specific aspect, it's right up my alley.
for those who like Vincent van Gogh, there's also a movie called "Loving Vincent," that has every frame of the film painted in his style, so it's a animated painting-movie

One of the games you played before called "death's gambit" was completely redesigned in a free update. They claim the map is twice as big a the old one, they redid the talent tree and a whole lot more. I thought it might be fun to go back and see if they fixed your complaints.
It went from mixed reviews to overwhelmingly positive on steam.
Yes please! I would love to see this as well. Great idea!
I will go back to it based on this so thank you for sharing

When the DLC came out for the game, I replayed the entire thing and 100%ed everything I could outside of the arena (I technically got 100%, but I still had unfinished fights in some of the DLC matches)
Best thing I learned from that playthrough? I got way better at the game. Never needed to make it easier or anything. Some of the later puzzles were so brutal but so satisfying to complete.
I'm so fucking happy CrossCode is getting the attention it rightly deserves. It's a masterwork.
"Art Direction" is what really carries a whole lot of these games, isn't it? Even with basic or even slightly clunky controls, a solid and cohesive art direction can really keep you enraptured
That being said, if the gameplay is completely borked, then not even solid art direction can save you.
@@aFewBitsShort Exactly. I haven't gotten back into the Witcher 1 because the combat isn't very good, but thank god for mods on the PC.

He played it already in an earlier video lol
Unsighted is one of those rare games made with passion that sadly didn't get the attention it deserves, I'm glad someone is praising it because it was one of my favorite indies of this year
Its kinda unbelievable to think that this game was the work of 2 ppl and the debut of the studio

@@branquelow yeah I figured as much after seeing his other comments
Enchain's checkpoint is literally the lamp from Bloodborne.
