    It would suck to be Gene Trauttman. Missed the title of being the drummer of Kyuss by an inch. Played drums for Queens and just before they really broke through with Songs for the Deaf he left (got kicked?) and even wrote the kickass drums for Go With The Flow which is often credited to Dave Grohl. And now he is pretty unknown. Amazing drummer and criminally underrated.

    But I would agree with ConiferTreez that their best line-up was the Power Trio of Homme, Oliveri and Alfredo back in the late 90's. There was just such a connection in that line-up. But the line-up in this video is fuckin amazin as well, and so are all the line-ups they've ever had, apart from possibly the LTP tour (RIP Natascha, she was a great musician but she didn't fit in QOTSA at all). And Alain is such a talented musician, but he just looks too quiet for this kinda band

    its amazing how in an era where rock and metal were in a world of shit (mid 90s to early 2000s with the rise of nu metal, pop punk, and post grunge) these guys didn't conform to what was popular and played what they wanted . qotsa are seriously one of the best rock bands of all time

      I was so surprised when I found out that they were playing shit like this in the 2000s and formed in 1997. I was blown away by how original they were compared to every other 2000s band around that Era.

    I see someone forced Olivieri to wear clothes this time. For some reason I picture some poor road manager chasing a naked Oliveri around backstage going "But Nick you have to wear pant if you want to play for the nice people!" and Nick is high as fuck going "nooooo I don't wanna! You fuckin' can't make me!"

    I know it's nothing new to say this but HEAVY FUCKIN SHIT WITH ONLY ONE GUITAR. Now QOTSA plays with three guitarrists and can't even touch this.
    Still respect them and will be at their show here in my city, but you can't deny the truth even if you are deaf.

      I have all sorts of theories for that, and it seems to be just this tour's sound. I don't think it's the amp settings or guitar, it might just be natural sonic burying behind Troy and Dean's high end, but mostly I think Josh has been messing with his parametric filter settings.

    • @bigmacshaq1
      @bigmacshaq1 10 років тому +3

      I kind of agree and kind of disagree. I mean when they play anything from sftd live its heavy as hell, but also if you look at how the music has progressed through the years, the songs aren't as heavy all the time. I guess im saying how they've evolved as a band and how they write. but, they still make it as heavy and dirty as ever live with any song thats heavy

      McFro95 Probably. I just think Josh's tone has gotten a lot more "airy" lately and that kind of lost some of it's cut and therefore presence. I don't think it's his guitar, because I'd argue that the Lullabies tone was the thickest he had and that was exclusively hollow and semi hollow guitars, it just sounds like he took a cocked way and leaned it back somewhat. I'm still fucking watching it, though. If I were his tech I would just A/B box his amps for set tones for songs from the first four records and the last two, though I'd say even the Era Vulgaris tone still isn't quite as "airy" as described before. Say a VT-22 and a V-4/V-4B with whatever cab set with whatever he had it set to circa 2001, and another VT-22 and a VT-40 set to what he wants now and he can switch depending on the song. Also double up on the parametric filters set to two different settings. I'd also get him to bring his Ovation back for the final numbers, but that's another story...

    whats on the internets is that he heard about this kind of abuse from nick before, and warned nick that he(josh) wouldnt like to hear this kind of shit about nick ever again, and it happened again(police involved, probably)... theres even a video where hes being interviewed and some girl says "i miss nick" and josh bashs her, cause if she was to be with nick close to her he'd probably beat her too, "cause thats what he does to girls like you", smthing like that

  • @chirp08
    @chirp08 15 років тому

    Take 2 minutes to google it, XFM did an interview on Rated R which covered when Nick joined the band, which was AFTER the first record. Josh and Nick were friends since they were children, being in the album artwork has nothing to do with writing the music. If you listen to 'I was a teenage hand model' (the last song on the first record) there are snippets of Josh asking Nick to join the band, that was a hint at what was to come.

    People go on about how QOTSA were far better back then than nowadays. I prefer their older albums, but their new albums are still brilliant, and still shit on anythin else out just now. LTP is a real slow-starter, but if you keep listening to it, it grows on you so much. And EV is just fuckin cool, it has such a dirty sound.
    And although he was a legend, Nick Oliveri deserved to get fired, he beat the fuck outta his girlfriend
    And QOTSA are definitely the best Kyuss spin-off, not Unida.

  • @Teuchterdavie
    @Teuchterdavie 16 років тому

    Also, some people (AKA ConiferTreez) go on and on and fuckin on about how Kyuss owns QOTSA. He's right in that Kyuss are legendary. IMO they're in the top 5 bands of all time, cos the music they created just defies belief - its SO GOOD. But they are not miles better than QOTSA like he implies. I'd go as far as to say that QOTSA are better than Kyuss purely based on the self titled album, and the songs 'The Bronze', 'Spiders and Vinegaroons', 'Ode to Clarissa' and 'Infinity'

  • @OUT0fEXILE
    @OUT0fEXILE 17 років тому

    Nah, pretty sure theyre two different people. Odadjian has moles that Oliveri doesnt, and plus when they perform with no shirts on you can see that they have totally different body structures.
    And howcome when you google "John Goother" a link to this video is the first entry? If "john goother" were a real musician in two popular bands, dont you think there would be other internet entries about his previous works or side projects?

  • @Nickahaikala
    @Nickahaikala 17 років тому

    I love this old shit, too. But I think their claim to fame is that every album is sooooooo good. They don't do ballads and pop songs. If they do something remotely close to that area, it's so full of "Fuck Off" attitude that makes it amazing. Queens doesn't sell out. They truly do better, or different. Era Vulgaris is good to. Just imagine a fuckin naughty ckick in front of you, as your stoned and drunk listening to that album. Oh god.

  • @carolinaviking

    Been hearing all the hype about QOTSA since 2003, yet have not heard anything from these guys that is the least bit interesting. This music is far less interesting than the music that inspired it. What is going on here? How could the amazingly creative work of The New York Dolls, The Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, The Violent Femmes, Jane's Addiction, Nirvana and all the others in a long line of interesting rock music lead to such uninspired "music" as this?

  • @ke228
    @ke228 16 років тому

    I know Mark wasn't a bassist. I should have clarified that better. He's a great singer. Screaming Trees are also a good band, "Nearly lost you" is a great song. I am a big fan of "Auto pilot" too, but Nick Oliveri sang that one. The drummer in this video is Gene Trautmann who was really good. The current drummer is Joey Castillo who is just as good.

  • @InKa4484
    @InKa4484 16 років тому

    Mark Lanegan was not a bassist his vocals are best with qotsa in my opinion. I've only heard a few songs by the Screaming Trees and the song bubblegum by mark lanegan band. hanging tree and auto pilot blow those away. This drummer isn't the current drummer and he was good too. I wouldn't mind hearin the guy troy replaced again.

  • @RafaelCK08

    Man, why there are some people (ConiferTreez) always complaining and comparing the bands...the're different bands, from different times...even josh is different man!
    He started playing when he was 15, he has 35 now...it can't be the same...people grown up!
    It doesn't mean it's not good!
    QOTSA is actually one of the best rock bands in the world!!!(IF IS NOT THE BEST!!!)

  • @ke228
    @ke228 16 років тому

    yeah, that would be pretty awesome if Nick joins QOTSA again. They're supposed to be going back into the studio again soon (can't wait for the next album), hopfully Nick will be back but Mike Shuman is a good bass player as well, and we can't forget Mark Lanegan!

  • @ke228
    @ke228 16 років тому

    Yeah I completely agree. Josh is one of the coolest frontmen ever. His style is like no one else, but Nick Oliveri was a big part of the band. Hopefully Nick will be back with QOTSA in the future but I'm not going to hold my breath for that, since Josh fired him.

    They are by far heavier than all those bands you cite. BASS, dude, BASS. C tunings on the guitar. Groooovy guitar leads by Josh Homme, who really has a unique sound. They're nowhere near those bands, it's really another music they do.
