Dave Grohl: 1999 Best band you've seen all year? "Queens of the Stone Age. It was at CBGB's in New York City earlier this year. I was right down in the front row. I had my own bottle of my whisky in my hand, and by the end of the show the bottle was gone and it was the best feeling in the world."
Setlist: Avon (0:32) You Think I Ain’t Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire (4:08) Mexicola (7:30) The Bronze (12:12) Tension Head (15:58) You Would Know (18:44) You Can’t Quit Me Baby (22:45) If Only (29:57) Regular John (33:39) Monsters in the Parasol (40:18) Nice footage btw
I admire Josh's responsible (cool) approach to recording. He waited on "You Think I aint...", a great song already, till it was perfect, as in SFD. He didn't use it for Rated R, which was before SFD... Wait, why am I telling you this? You're all QOTSA addicts here. Peace! Lalli rocks btw! It doesn't matter if his slide's a bit too overdone, they were fucking experimenting back then - this is supposed to be enjoyed in retrospective, at least in my mind!
Classic QOTSA - Best QOTSA. Could still hear remnants of Kyuss in the early days. Caught their first lot of UK shows back in 1998 @ The Garage. Think it cost me all of about 9 Quid. Excellent footage. Thanks for upload & share.
Listening to this......I am enveloped in a blanket of heaven. My ears have never heard a more perfect sound. Of all the music in the world the sound they make.....is the pinnacle of perfection, there is and has never been anything that sounded better for me. Like a desert is beautiful and harsh it is perfect just as it is. It astounds me every time I here them that such beautiful sounds could exist in this world, made by some magic of human ingenuity. Thank you
Back in holidays 1998, my friend and I worked for UPS as "Driver helpers" which paid amazingly for the time, but was a seasonal gig. After Christmas (and before New Years) we found ourselves with a boatload of cash and no job or responsibilities. So we went on a road trip from SE Michigan to San Francisco and back. At Tower Records in LA I found the Kyuss/QOTSA split EP. It became our soundtrack for the journey home. A month later, I saw an ad in Metro Times that said "Queens of the Stone Age" would be playing at The Shelter (for any non-Detroiters, it's a really intimate club in the basement of a big club). We went, paid like $8 at the door, and got rocked the fuck out. To this day the only show that compares is QOTSA at Red Rocks 2017.
I'm guessing Nick trimmed his goatee and grew out some hair on his head between that show and this one, but I remember this guy looking like Anton Lavey helping set up, and my friend saying "That guy is in the band" in a sarcastic, joking manner. But he actually was. We had no idea at the time that guy was Nick from Kyuss.
Saw them open for The Smashing Pumpkins in Phoenix about 3 or 4 weeks before this. Had no idea about them. Been pretty much my favorite band since. And can't believe that's about to be 25 f*ckin' years.
I saw them do Ozzfest that summer... a day after I saw them do a most awesome set at the Newbury Comics store in Westborough, Mass. I got to stand in front of JH, chek out his board, gear, and watch him play while enjoying the show. Took out a camera, JH wagged his finger for a second, andI wasn't about to cross that gigantic stoner lord at his show.
Nock haha.... good catch man! Yeah that’s pretty friggin awesome when you remember a story such as that and then happen to stumble upon the footage for yourself later on down the road like here.
Awesome footage of the lads in the early days. Love the white outfits so the images project onto them. And man Nick looks weird with hair, short goatee and a shirt! 😆
This is fucking great. Sick to see Mario lalli here, i met him last year he was with brant nick and ryan gut (stöner) in italy and i slept in the same hotel...one of the best experience
What amazing about this show is we look back and marvel about how great it was but no doubt some folks left pissed that night no KYUSS songs were played. Ha.
I think we opened for them that night. Can't remember it was so damn long ago, but I know our bassist was working the door that night cuz he worked there.
Hot damn, good old Mario Lalli playing in the Queens... That's not something you see often, this guy has to be one of the most lovable dudes in all of rock. I wish there was a good shot of the cabs they're using, I bet they're the all white Rod Stewart Hot Legs tour cabs Joshua mentioned way back given that they're also dressed in all white apart from Mario, or was that after R was released?
Yes I know when this gig took place but I was just wondering when did they purchase the Rod Stewart cabs, all white so they also wore all white. They at least used them on the Rated R tour and during Ozzfest to piss the other bands off. But I'm thinking early 99 might have been too early for those cabs
They bought them just prior to recording Rated R which was late 99. You can see a pic of them recording with them in the montage during Long Slow Goodbye off Over the Years and Through the Woods. I think it was 4-6 Ampeg V2 Cabinets, (baffled 4x12 roughly the size of a 6x10 enclosure), a couple of matching V4 or V2 heads and all the road cases for about $200. The all white getup here is just a coincidence, and they're using white bed sheets to cover their equipment.
Never noticed that on Long Slow Goodbye, thought I knew Over the Years and Through the Woods by heart. Thanks Baby Duck. Those 4x12 cabs were mean as hell, Queens are a loud band and I think that the 12 inch speaker is better suited for low tuned guitars anyhow, that's what I use and I've always preferred it over the classic 10 inch speaker, sort of a fuller sound. The cabs even came with Rod's setlist, they should have told Brendon that was not the actual set list, or something like that :D By the way, talking about Over the Years... The guitar sounds on that DVD are the tits, I don't think a guitar has ever sounded quite as tasty live as Joshua's Maton does there. Sure it's compressed as fuck, but the way a hollowbody sounds with fuzz thrown on is unbeatable, add in the maestro pdf and you're golden
Hi guys I can tell that the dude singing on millionaire its not Nick.. (is it Mario for the desert?) and who's on bass? Is it Nick? Is not him? Wasn't he already in the band back in 99? If anyone knows any of this I'll appreciate if you can clarify for me Ty
I know it’s cool to see Mario actually doing Millionaire with the band, but Jesus, it’s nothing without some strong drumming. While Alfredo is good, there’s no doubt about it, he has nowhere enough power to do the song justice. Gene really did get it right on SFTD
Fredo is the man he has the desert groove no one has! Josh said it but seems fredo didn’t like touring but we don’t know the real reason why he was axed... anyways thank you this is awesome best qotsa album!!
I think it's Mario Lalli on the second guitar/backing vocals. At least Josh says "Mario, we're playing Regular John" before the song. And if I'm not mistaken, he co-wrote and sang the song in the fifth edition of the Desert Sessions.
this is killer footage!! so early, i love it. if you want to see some more early footage, my short-lived production company in seattle shot a multi-cam show of theirs in 2000 - ua-cam.com/video/bl6c8P59oBA/v-deo.html
Try playing that yourself with no light! Lol not easy also maybe Mario wasn’t playing full time with them? Also josh and everyone of the desert give Mario thanks for inspiring them and giving them mentoring in making music

Dave and Josh go waaaaay back. Dave would regularly shout out Kyuss in interviews and gave a bunch of copies of BFTRS to his friends.

Sweet early version of Millionaire. Pretty cool seeing Mario Lalli on vocals for the first time

Wow this is fantastic .. surprised the sound is so good and powerful captured by a small camera in 99
Probably has a direct out from the board for audio
It's crazy having access to all this old footage at your fingertips isn't it? I remember waiting hours for tinny bootleg mp3s on dial up LOL

Josh’s vocals on the next song are amazing.
