Great lesson. Thank you. I am a relatively new painter and got some Golden Open acrylics for a tutorial. I really enjoy the way they can be used to blend on the canvas. I had not seen a landscape tutorial with the Open line before yours. Do you prefer them over regular acrylics? I have mostly used Liquitex Basics. I would live to get your thoughts comparing the two. Also, could I mix them or can I only mix Golden Open with another Golden acrylic paint?
Thank you!! I can’t say I like one over the other, they both have their pros and cons but I use them when I need smoother transitions!, especially on the second layer. They are interminable! You can even mix them with heavy body acrylics to speed up drying time or vice versa!
Oh, another question. Do you feel that Golden (heavy body or OPEN) dry darker? The liquitex basics that i'm using dry considerably darker. I was using them to paint a sunny beach and my end result looked like there was an eclipse going on hahaha. I did fix it, but i found that i bit hard to manage, mainly when trying to match a dried color. Thanks again!
All acrylics dry one shade darker! Some a little less, both Golden acrylics dry slightly darker because of the binder resin they use is kind of milky white, and when the paint dries that binder turns clear, which is why it’s darker when dry! Now, there’s only one pain brand that doesn’t have a color shift, and that’s Winsor&Newton Artist acrylics, they use a clear resin binder not milky, so there is no shift! And I’ve tested it before! It’s there professional artist brand. You can google it : Winsor&Newton artist acrylics It’s sold online or at Jerry’s Artarama!!its a great paint, I still have some.
Nice (watching now!), one question. Can you safely mix OPEN with regular acrylic? I've heard its ok, but its better not to paint over a wet OPEN with the regular , because the regular will dry faster and prevent the OPEN from drying properly. Have you noticed any problems like that?
You can mix the two together, the only thing is that the Open Acrylics will dry faster! The only thing about the Open is that if you don’t let it dry completely, any form of moist wether is be another layer of Open Acrylics or Heavy body and moist from your brush will rehydrate the bottom layer of Open Acrylics! I hope that wasn’t confusing, Lol !! Make sure it’s completely dry. Other wise mixing the two is perfectly ok, just will dry faster, that’s all.
Robbie Irlam I actually hated acrylics when I started painting, oils was my dominant medium, that’s until I learned from watching another acrylic artist! From then on acrylics have become my dominant medium. It dries quick, allowing me freedom to continue painting layers upon layers in quick succession. As you can see I paint quick !
Many thanks Karim. Maybe time to change to acrylics as well. I do find it somewhat frustrating waiting for oils to dry before being able to add layers!
Bustin' good, guy...thanks Ray here...

Your preference towards acrylics as opposed to oils Gebahi ?

Robbie Irlam I hear ya! You may want to try Gamblin Fastmatte oils, they dry pretty quick !
I use this brand for plein air. I just dampen my brush and not use water with them.
