Mad about Fern - an introduction to ferns with Wina @fern_wmp

- In this episode, I am joined by Wina from @fern_wmp to chat about ferns. I ask all the right questions about these plants as Wina struggle to answer them throughout lol. This episode is quite hilarious as I am very comfortable talking to Wina. There are tons of wonderful fern visuals and cinematography flashed on the screen throughout the episode - courtesy of Wina since she is a cinematographer.
We discuss the types of ferns there are, visiting them in their natural habitats, fern care, propagation, etc… In the middle of the episode we speculate on the care of maiden hair ferns (adiantums). I also ask Wina what some of her favorite ferns are. We talk about sustainability of ferns, their conservation status, as well as tree fern substrate alternatives.

Wow, that's exactly the kind of video for me! Unfortunately not many people seem to be into ferns but I love them so much! Thank you for making this 😊
Thank youu. Theres so many interesting things about ferns other than the way they lookz
Andam looks like what we call bracken in Australia, it grows abundantly and is viewed as a weed. Our tree ferns(to buy) come with a registration certificate to prove it isn't poached. Great video, ferns finally!
It might be the same thing!
I love listening to Wina speak. Her voice is so charming and calming 😌 I love ferns, so gonna subscribe to her channel.
Yes she has the charm and personality!
Love your interactions with your guests. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🥰
i love this 'onlyplants' talk show video format. 👍
thank you, I had a good time editing it too lol
What's nice about your channel is that even though I'm in France your videos mostly come out during the day for me, which is just perfect. Thank you, for the content and the moment of publication!
Yayeee thank you. Have a pleasant day ahead
Have finally just started having success with my ferns after two years of attempts, so this was perfectly timed to build my knowledge more! Will definitely be following Wina as well, thanks for introducing us to her.
Yaye ❤️
Thanks for Wina for all the information on ferns. I also love ferns so much. One interesting thing is that we eat fern(we call it Gosari and it's one of bibimbop ingredients)in Korea 😄. There is a kind of fern we can eat. It's delicious and nutritious at the same time. Thanks for sharing.
Whoaaa ill look out for it next time. I love bibimbap!
Wonderful episode, I learned something about why ferns don't grow well for me - never tried using a fan on them when they begin to crisp up. I love them but I have killed my last one. What the two of you called "andam" is what the growers of very expensive aroids are now putting in their moss poles instead of sphagnum moss. There are some plant tubers who grow the thousand dollar plus aroids and they all recommend what they call "tree fern fiber." It retails for about 50 dollars US per pound so even their substrate is as nigh end as possible. 🤣
Whoaaa maybe we should grow this substrate here and export it to the US lol.
Thanks Sean. Looking forward to the next episode! ❄️💚🙃
Thanks Judy!
I loves ferns , thanks Sean and lovely Wina 😘💕🌿
Thank you ❤️
It was very interesthing as I love ferns!🌿Thank you so much and looking forward to seeing next episode😍
Thank youu ❤️🥰
Can't wait to see the episode of propagating ferns. cool stuff! thx
🥰🥰
❤❤❤ I want every fern i see. Some of them i have a hard time keeping alive ( maidenhair and holly fern ) especially through the winter. You two are a great team.
They are great to visit in botanic gardens too if we struggle to grow in our homes 😀
What a great episode, Sean. Very good information, thank you both for sharing.
Thank you 🥰🥰
I like ferns they are beautiful. What is find ferns interesting are the shapes of their leaves, the designs, and the way they grow on trees, rocks, water etc. Thanks for this video ,Sean!
❤️❤️
Hello, I purchased a Autumn Fern Oct of 2022. Only because of the beautiful coloring. I've never been interested in Ferns because of the difficulty ( I 've heard) of maintaining them. I literally was fussy with it this morn. because I couldn't understand why it was constantly getting crispy tips & there u were with a episode about Ferns. The air circulation was definitely worth noting because I recently place a air circulation fan near it. Look forward to more content..Thank U
Ohhh yeah they would hate air conditioning. Some ferns can actually take a bit lower humidity than others
@@onlyplants Hello, Thank U for ur response. Its not air conditioning its a fan that circulates the air. I have it positioned upward so the air can circulate thru out the rm. Thank U
Oh my goodness I’ve been following her on Instagram for a while also! So happy to see you collaborate 😊 Please do more fern episodes! In Japan, Platycerium is extremely popular (amongst Platycerium enthusiasts 😂).
Thank youuu. If you live in Japan and have content ideas, please DM me on instagram! As I will be visiting Japan next month. My instagram is @bo.tan.ist
@@onlyplants ok i sent u DM on instagram
I love ferns, but the only ones I can grow are the birds nest varieties. My house is way to dry for the more tender leaf varieties. Outside in the summer months no problem but bring them inside and they turn into crispy critters. ❄️💚🙃 Heck I turn into a crispy critter in the winter months! ❄️💚🙃
Wooh consider tenting them in a bag for humidity over winter? The key is to let them not die back completely so you can bring them back in spring.
Excited for the next video! Wina seems so sweet 💜
Oh yeah shes a mix of charming and hilarious 😀
Sama sama 😀
I have Boston Fern growing wild
I really enjoyed this thank you. Look forward to the next one
❤️❤️
What a pleasure to watch ! 🙂 Thank you both! I saw the vegetative propagation of a treefern in episode 5 of 'The Victorian Flower Garden' a while ago . If you are curious...
Wowww briefly saw it and added to watch list!! Thank you for this!
Wina is beautiful, greetings from the🇵🇭.
Thank you ❤️ shes very charming
Thank you for the video.
Yayee
Wina is so sweet and very fond of ferns..but she's learning about this..i want to see more pictures and they cientific names..can it be possible Sean? Have a nice time
Yes thats something I hope to achieve in the near future as I want to collect their scientific names too. Might be cool to do a visually pleasing episode showing different foliage and names.
I remember Wina a lot; I think us Indonesians noticed her, in the midst of Aroid Craze, she was posting about ferns with all the incredibly intricate latin names and being able to ID them all.
I’m very fond of ferns; I think it’s cuz they have this lacy, delicate appearance, and they have this tendency to sway in the winds that makes a perfect object to look at after a long day, it definitely provides much needed movement in the garden too.
However, my family always complained whenever I purchase ferns (it grows everywhere here, on the trees, on the streets, basically a weed here); they’d say I have purchased a weed back to home 😂😂 add with the fact that ferns can be hard to take care of has made me turned off to raise ferns.
But after seeing Wina’s posts and her social media, Idk if I can use another word than being inspired, but let’s just say it definitely made me be able to stick to my opinion and made me appreciates ferns more.
Wow I’m sure she will be happy to read this!
Interesting episode! I love ferns and bryophytes in general! 😊
Thank youu
Thank you!!!
❤️❤️🙏🏽
Nice discussion. Dicksonia is another tree fern which can be propagated by cutting off the top and rooting it.
Whoaaa I just googled it. Looks good
This so fun!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank youu 🥰
I sworn off ferns Years ago and this kinda made me wanna go back on that ! Wina is so talented and so smart please tell me she sells those fern prints 🥺
😀😀
Yes!!!! I love ferns!!!!

Always love fern but also always failed with it. Thank you for the video

Some new ferns arrived yesterday and my cat seem to be interested to chomp on the tips..

In PH we eat Fern or Paco but we didn't cook it just Vinegar and Onion.

💚💚💚
❤️❤️
Am living in the tropical land of Jamaica,we got a lot here, the one that I'm seeing mostly in the forest, the root that stands up is smooth to the touch, what species is that type
❤️🌻
❤️❤️
Love fern’s but don’t have the right humidity for them in my house!
A few have adapted to live in lower humidity, see if you can find some in your area to try again 😀 they are great once you get them going.
❤
❤️❤️ thank you
Being from Washington state…. Ferns are weeds here. I’d be curious to find out what amazing species we have round.
❤️❤️
There are 40 species of ferns native to the Pacific Northwest 😊
Oh dear I only have one fern which is a boston fern i think. They are difficult to find where I live.
Try to adjust the care… usually its not enough light. 😀
I'm unfortunately a fern killer 😅 but I love them too.
🥰🥰
Elevation!
Yes. 😝
😀😀
Tangerang Raya hadir!!!!
Haha 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I like ferns also and have some collections
Yayeye
😊
🙏🏽🥰
I might try me a another fern this summer, had one before and it grew so much that I didn't know how to handle that and I got rid of it. Lol
Whoops they are fun to rehabilitate… can be divided etc too. 😀 they are one of those plants that can surprisingly take a bit of abuse
Interesting
❤️❤️
Shame on you giving that young lady a hard time! I’m just teasing. ❄️💚🙃
Haha 😀

@@onlyplants you the Man💫
HECK YEAH !!!! IVE NEVER CLICKED SO QUICKLY BEFORE!!!
Haha thank you 😋
This video came at the best time for me. I've gotten into ferns lately with one staghorn fern and counting, and I'm planning on getting a tree fern next month. I'm hungry for new information besides what's already out there. I love ferns for their prehistoric quality and how lush they can grow under the right conditions.
Also, I know that this episode is about ferns, but what was that plant on the base of the Blechnum clip? The leaves look anthurium-esque but it also looks like a vining plant
Im thinking it might be the syngonium wendlandii
