At some point it looked like a very messy feature, but the final result and your own plant looks beautiful. Absolutely worth the effort and patience.❤❤❤
On the use of screws to directly screw to the board, I would like to suggest using a small drill bit about 2mm diameter to pre drill the holes then install the screws. Very safe method as some wood are very hard.
These are truly amazing plants. When I lived in the Florida Keys I often saw examples growing in peoples yards I'm sure weighing over a thousand ponds.
Mature one is stunning. When it covers the moss ball with those leaves, perfection. I have one staghorn fern, but in soil tho, just divided it into 2 new ones the other day, I might try this method.
The fern video I have been needing! I have large ferns that were originally purchased mounted to a piece of wood covered in bark. They got a fungal infection hanging inside and I had to remove them from the wood. I’m going to try the pine board with the hole drilled in the back once I get them healthy enough!
When I first found the video I was like, "Yay, I'm gonna learn how to mount a staghorn fern!" After watching the video, I'm like, "Nope, I'm never mounting a staghorn fern!"
I think that this looks intimidating to the average person. This guy is a professional and has has alot of practice so don't expect yours to look this way on your first try. I had alot of anxiety when I was re-doing mine. I had to harvest some of the plant because it was just getting to big to handle. I just got out my "Ginsu" knife and tackled it. I put mine in a wire basket filled with Spaghnum moss. 3 around the side and 1 in the middle top.
other...says hard work ..yah..but after a month..look at that..amazingly beautiful..thanks for sharing...i enjoy watching coz ilove that kind of fern..
These are beautiful ways to display staghorns, but I know I would make a mess of it.): I’ll stick to a slotted basket ; I think I can handle that task for now.
13:08 He just never turns down the rotation speed of the drill and doesn't seem like he knows how If you held it firm and at the right speed the drill won't skip or strip the screw- he seems to know that he doesn't know how to slow it down so he holds the drill really lightly to avoid stripping the screws, but in doing do its making it bounce all over the place He's feathering the trigger- and she's right when she says it looks dangerous its because it is Dude is gonna drill a hole through his finger
Basically, it's about securing the substrate or growing medium without a holder as you would do in a pot. Using a threadlike fastener would of course be more fiddly compared to something more netlike
i got my very first staghorn few months back, and its time to mount it as its has grown all over its pot. thank you very much you two. im so nervous. wish me luck...
I've got a juvenile that's just about outgrown the kokedama ball it came in but now I'm not sure it's quite ready for mounting. I'm even more worried about my lack of skill and ability to do it correctly after seeing this! 😅
😂😂. I enjoyed the way the fern was tied with the fine thread and the patience with which it was done.. I am a failed diy person so anyone who can put a nail successfully - respect 😌🤣😂
Depends on where u have the stag! If controlled watering, ok for lots of sphagnum moss and coconut chips as per this video. If under rain all the time then pls don't mount like this...minimal media.
Good presentation. I'm jealous of the variety of Platyceriums that you have available. Here in Tasmania, I've only come across P. superbum and P. bifurcatum. Cheers
May I please have a question answered? I would like to mount my fern but am unsure if it is one or two in the pot. I see two base fronds that are growing with their underside verticle and facing each other. How would I do this? I wish I could send you a picture but I have NO IDEA how to mount this fern!!!
Awesome video, very informative and impeccable technique! My question is: once the fern has grown around the moss effectively closing up the moss ( like the Ridley in the video) how do I water it? :D also: what is the specific fertilizer you use? Kind regards
You can immerse the whole plant in water, even if it's on a board. Let it soak half an hour to an hour, longer the bigger the plant. You can fertilize with, surprise, banana peels. Cut them into small ( 2 inch sections), also soak in water then put the sections between the flat fronds.
I didn't think I needed this video but this was very educational! Thank you! It was good to see the new shield frond at the end too :) Now I'm wondering what he does when he wants to remount one that has grown around the wood?
I mount mine on large slabs of driftwood and my largest one was smothering that driftwood mount so I made a much larger oval mounting board of rough sawn pine boards and then attached the driftwood mount to it which the station is now growing out and over that board. I wouldn't like to cut it away as it would cause a lot of damage.
How do you water it though once the plant wraps around the entire moss ball? Are you able to pull the leaves back to water the inside or you just mist the plant?
hi. my sister has 2 platy superbum from Australia growing in her yard and both have babies. how is the safe and correct way to propagate the babies. thank you for the videos, very helpful.
Here in Australia, they grow safely outside if it's a frost free zone. Platycerium superbum do not produce babies, so you may be referring to Platycerium bifurcatum and those babies I cut out(saving as much of the root system as possible) from the shield of the mother plant using a serrated steak knife. My mounting technique I similar which I show in my videos. Cheers and good luck. It's fun and very rewarding.
I had to cut away the roots and some bottom layers of the base because I got a baby growing in a sponge plug and it was rotting. I have the newest layer and the frauns secured to a 1/2 inch mesh wire box about 5X5x1 stuffed with moss. It will re root and continue to grow more of the base layers correct? I could not save the roots they are so thin and dense in the sponge. I knew it would continue to rot.
Hello! I've been watching your channel for a long time, and I recently used a small part of this video in mine - I hope you don’t mind! Thank you for the inspiration and amazing content!
Thank you very much for all the advice. I will make one. Can you give me the name of the variety of this Fern? How long will it take to completely cover the foam? Hello from France 😉
Rotate the neck of the power drill to slow down the speed at which it rotates If youre drilling screws into boards you have to rotate much slower and press firmly to get a good piercing action- too fast and the drill will bounce, and too firm+too fast will strip the backing of the screw Try slow and firm

Very helpful video. I like how he explains his thought process instead of just putting something together in a few minutes. Very helpful video.

Thank you ...I shall show this to my husband so that he can learn 😁
@Go Surf lol nobody asked but go off sis
agree, without a small hole to start with, the screw will slip. Alternatively hammer a small nail just to get a starting point , works well.
Especially with those brass screws easy to strip even with a predrilled hole

🤣🫣 it is a little intimidating! 😵
I tried it and gotta say it's actually quite easy. Did it all by myself, zero help.
Does he have a channel

Yay congratulations!! I wish I could see it!!
I don't think I will ever have the opportunity to do this but I love this video so much. Thank you.
I love how we all gotta rev that drill once or twice first!!
😁😁
Thank you dear for this demo , I will try this for sure🌹
LOVELY ❤👍🏿
Thank you guys . Terima kasih banyak.
Warm regards from Indonesia🌻☔
Really gorgeous form and looks healthy .
That looks so satisfying to make. Very interesting plant love its leaves esp. the big one wow!

What a gift you got girl! Thank you so much for sharing.
Love platicerium
Clearly he’s a perfectionist !
wonderful video! thanks for sharing.
Try pre-drilling the hole. Helps the screw to then enter easily.

Sangat cantik❤ saya mau belajar nanti😊 Terimakasih atas Video nya 🎉🙏👏
Whoosh.. Mounting staghorns requires a lot of effort and patience hahaha
Thank you again for giving us another tips! ♥
I am amazed it took me so long to discover your channel. This was a great tutorial and they were all beautiful plants. Thanks guys!
So glad we finally found you!🥰🤗
i found this staghorn attached to a tree on the street nearby my house, it looks so gorgeous
Once the fern completely covers the moss/soil substrate, how do you water the plant and ensure water gets to the root area?
I dunk mine in a bucket of water.
You are amaizing!!!!!!!!
Beautiful 😍
i got my very first staghorn few months back, and its time to mount it as its has grown all over its pot. thank you very much you two. im so nervous. wish me luck...
I just tried to do myself last weekend. Most time consuming for me is trying to figure out the orientation of the plant! Good luck sis🤗☘️
@@leafing.around thank you sis!
Woooooow.
Nice presentation and explained clearly.
I learned it happly 😊.
Thanks a lot both of you 💞
u should soak the moss first so that easier to shape it and make it round
Very informative
Instead of fishing line, you can use gauze roll to. And its really help especially if you have to do it alone.
I've got a juvenile that's just about outgrown the kokedama ball it came in but now I'm not sure it's quite ready for mounting. I'm even more worried about my lack of skill and ability to do it correctly after seeing this! 😅
I love this video. Thank you so much showing how this is done. Quite meditative..😀😌
Ah really? That's the 1st I heard! I thought the drilling was quite anxiety inducing😂

Terimakasih tutorialnya 👍👏👏👏
What a fantastic piece of living art ah gal 👏🏻👏🏻 But the mounting part is like harder than installing ikea’s bed 🤣
This. Video is so helpful. I'm going to do mine soon!
Very informative ❤ what soil mix did you use? Chunky?

Great video! Never thought of using screws to hold the fishing line!
OMG, very beautiful
Great Video! Thank You For Sharing.
26:03 I didn't expect to read that subtitle to be that tragic. Like Heaven compares to Earth. Omg. Lol.
Amazing plant! Thanks for sharing your talent
Yeay..love tanduk rusa 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I dont live in the tropics, so many months it will need to be in my home. How often should I water it?
Nice fern
Good presentation.

I keep killing the potted ones I buy. Once I can actually keep one alive, I'll follow your instructions here. Thank you ✌🏼
If you are buying from the box store get it out of that pot. Put in wire basket filled with Spaghnum Moss. DONT OVER WATER
Nice sharing 👍

What is the brand of the sphagnum moss he used in your mount?
Thanks a lot guys.... 😀

Can I mount even if my fern doesn’t have any shield yet??
Wow 💕
Watching again in 2024 !!
Great video
I love your Video's. @LeafingAround
What can I substitute the moss with? Would coco fiber be suitable?
I know this plant.Ants love this plant
I enjoy you video. Thank you
💚
Can you use a natural colour of a piece of hosiery over the the moss to keep it down?
Hi Irene, how are you... may i ask, van i use Palochina wood for my Platycerum or Staghorn? Or what's the best wood,? Thanks👍💚
Great video!!!
Nice....I have more than 1000 pices of monsters...plants from India
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers :)
I have about 3-4 teeny tiny staghorn ferns and now I'm wondering if I could mount them on a long stick with bark, sort of like a little tree 😍
Ooh ok so I kinda did that but each one on its own plank or board and then hang the board on a big trunk so I can swap them around as needed
Kereeennn tipsnya
Terima kasih🤗😊🥰✌️
Bravo! 👏
I used wood and it started cracking from the water. Has that happened to you?
5:00 YOU NEED TO PRE-DRILL THE HOLE THEN YOU PLACE THE 🪝 HOOKS.
Good day, where can I purchase the KWR poster of platycerium on the wall behind?
Is it the spaghnum moss need to soak in water first?
How do you water it though once the plant wraps around the entire moss ball? Are you able to pull the leaves back to water the inside or you just mist the plant?
I think sometimes he soak the entire thing in a tub... I just water them as usual. But the Ridley does not like so much water...dunk with care!

You can actually trim off the root ball, they are pretty hardy.
Just staple a net bag to the board and save yourself a lot of frustration.
Thank you very much for all the advice. I will make one. Can you give me the name of the variety of this Fern? How long will it take to completely cover the foam?
Hello from France 😉
The one being mounted in the video is P. Kitshakood
It appears to be Platycerium superbum.
With 18 species and numerous cultivars, it gets a bit complicated.
It's been a year, can you show us an update?
I see small ferns growing in the top of some of the (Staghorn Ferns). What is that small fern?
He’s so handsome and cutiee 🥰😅
How to carefully harvest baby staghorns which are growing around the mother plant?
1st...they need to be bigger...don't take when too small. The rest...I am not so sure...grab as much roots with it as possible? 😄
It's easier if you use a hybrid of ridleyi like kitchakodiense. Ridleyi is more challenging and difficult due to its sensitivity.
Rotate the neck of the power drill to slow down the speed at which it rotates
If youre drilling screws into boards you have to rotate much slower and press firmly to get a good piercing action- too fast and the drill will bounce, and too firm+too fast will strip the backing of the screw
