I love the camera placement on this video. It really lets you see EVERYTHING you're doing. A lot of people feel the need to put their face on camera more than on the brew. Good video man, cheers!
Hi gash, i went and checked out the cellar dweller forum last night, its awesome, its the best one around by far. Its so well setup and easy to navigate. Im new ish to brewing but it literally has a wealth of advice and detailed and easy to follow recipes for everyone which is exactly what I was after. I look forward to spending more time checking this forum out further. Cheers mate.
I should be the one saying thanks mate, you and your channel have helped heaps. What part of Australia are you from? Im in between Gold coast and Brisbane bit more towards Gold coast. Also mate im going to bottle that hoppy Aussie pale ale brew today and wanted to experiment priming some of the bottles with dextrose, any idea how many teaspoons of dextrose I should add to each 750ml bottle? Cheers mate.
I'm living in Melbourne unfortunately at the moment. Sorry mate been out and about. Umm its a large rounded teaspoon of table sugar about 6 to 7 grams ish, so at a guess its probably about the same with dextrose but I wouldnt have it really heap it on if that makes sense. Table sugar is pretty constant but when dealing with dextrose it can have more air in it or a bit denser so its a little hard to tell, its really best to weigh it but I know thats hard when doing bottles individually, thats why a lot of people bulk prime. Cheers!
Thanks a lot for putting this video on. Just did my 3rd ever homebrew this weekend. It was my first partial mash and I watched your video a good few times before getting started. It's in the fermentor now. Things went really well, fingers crossed. Cheers! :)
awesome idea on the ice block add to bring that wort to temp ASAP, the copper wort cooler ring thing just seems like to many hoses and connections to deal with! Ive used the ice block method in some of my extract brews and no noticeable effect to quality or taste. I will be using this method in my evolution from extract to all-grain brewing ASAP!!!
Thanks for explaining everything so clearly. Would I have to change my volumes of mash and sparge water for a 23 litre batch? I only have a 15 litre brew pot, do you think I could get away with it?
the link is right below the video above under published on Feb 21 2013, this was a 19L batch. Cheerz! you'll also find it in the Ales section under American Ales.
Hey, nice info here. One thing though, I've seen malt extracts being added after boiling a couple times now but I thought it was added after the mash and before hops? Cheers for the video.
Hey, I am going to try this method, thanks for sharing. Just wondering about adding the DME after you have brought the temp down. Does it not cake up and become sticky chunks? I am guessing not as it didn't in your vid, but I just want to check. Cheers
Hi mate, so close to pulling the trigger on this one - just one question - when pouring from the pot to the fermenter, I notice on this occasion that you don't use the stainless strainer to catch the hop residue - (as I have noticed on other videos). Is there a reason for this? Dan
Just a good stir usually, only a part of this brew is boiled, the other half comes from the kitchen tap which has plenty of oxygen in it. Cheerz! Even my All Grain batches with the whole wort boiled, I just give it a really good stir.
+Edwards Brew Master Gday mate, you'd be looking at something like a 1.037 preboil and 1.051 post boil. All depends on your grain, grain crush, stove and location. Cheers mate!
+Gash Slugg I got 1.070 post boil, but I added 1.7kg of unhopped light malt to that, but I now I'm thinking that it was too much. Maybe I should have to add a lot more grains probably twice as much and then see what the OG was. I'll give it another go. Cheers buddy
I'm just starting out, so I guess I don't know much. But it just seems like adding ice could cause contamination (unless it was distilled water but even then the water can become contaminated in the freezer). Also, adding the DME post boil seems like it could also be a source of contamination. I know it shouldn't cause contamination but the boil is the only thing that ensures sterilization.
G'day, distilled water is awful for brewing, awful for drinking too, unless you know what you're doing with pH and salts to add back what you've taken out. It was clean water put into sanitised containers and frozen overnight. DME straight from a factory sealed packet is about as sanitised as anything else will be in a home environment. Although I understand your concerns they aren't issues, a full boil of 6 to 7 gallons isn't possible in most peoples kitchens, then the ability to chill a batch that size is also a problem for most. Thanks for watching and commenting, cheers!
I just added a 23 Litre batch recipe on cellar dweller its on the same link. I'd do the mini mash the same as the 19L batch and just up the amount of light dry malt and hops. Cheerz
There is no use adding all the dme when not doing a full boil, it will only lower hop utilisation. Usually do it around 1.040 which is about 100g per 1000ml (1 litre)
I don't use it, I've brewed for all this years with out one, before this style can out, I think it's just habit, but I also don't like the idea of opening the lid and disturbing things if it really isn't necessary. Maybe I'm just lazy :D Cheers mate!

Got it.
Which is the method of calculation of the amount of water you need for the Mash and the Sparge?
Consider obtaining 23L final.
V.
That was great. I have not seen sparg done like that... but makes sence. How strong a beer did this make?
Thanks for explaining everything so clearly. Would I have to change my volumes of mash and sparge water for a 23 litre batch? I only have a 15 litre brew pot, do you think I could get away with it?

Hey, nice info here. One thing though, I've seen malt extracts being added after boiling a couple times now but I thought it was added after the mash and before hops? Cheers for the video.

Sam Gundersen No it's fine, you get lumps either way, just give it a good mix, some times you seem to get less in cooler water! Cheers mate!
Hey Gash, great vid mate as always! How many litres is the larger pot you used for the boil! Cheers mate, Adam!

Doesn't really matter mate. All will be fine! Cheers

Hi mate what sort of "OG" did you get from your grain boil? Cheers

I've never seen DME added post boil. Most are part of the full boil.. How did that turn out.
