Great help gash, been following you for a while on j TV and UA-cam keep up the good work, just starting off in all grain now been doin the kits for a few years time to try something new cheers for the help good to se a fellow Aussie on here cheers
Great vid mate... Used to do a few small partial mash batches back in NZ but recently moved to Germany but this might be just the ticket for weekday brewing over the winter here... At least the snow will make chilling quick and easy! One suggestion for your hops... Get some cheap disposable plastic cups... Measure ya hops stack em up and drop the hops in easy as... Use a whiteboard marker if you need to put the times on... Learnt that from another Aussie brew tuber offtapbrewing. Cheers... Now to break it to the wife that her crock pot is going to find other uses!
I was just thinking of "can i use a slow cooker?" the other day walking through harvey norman! Apparently you proved my thought right! So gotta give this a go, even if it does piss the missus off!! ;) Cheers mate
I gave this a crack on Sunday night. I ended up with a SG of 1.055. I think the mash was a bit warm. I ended up with over 5l and didn't worry about adjusting the hop quantities for acid %. It has already blown out the air lock once and is fermenting in the fridge like a Mother. Can't wait to bottle and try.
was very interested in this, the slow cooker is a great thing, for food, drugs( healthy ones) and beer... it seems, knew there had to be the beer use there.. cheers mate.
1st time ive seen your channel mate, top video watching an alternative way of doing a brew.. cheers i enjoyed that, i think i may have a chat with my slow cooker. good stuff.
Hey Gash just found this, what a great idea!!!! Going to give it a go, just wondering if you could help with beersmith settings, keep having it tell me to put in more water than the slow cooker can home. Thanks
What is the size of your crockpot? I'm trying to figure out how much the grains displace the water. Do you feel you need a 1.5 gallon slow cooker is sufficient for a 1 gallon batch?
***** It was from a home brew shop, they usually have some large ones, also check commercial kitchen supply stores, I spent months looking in department stores for a cheap one to no avail. Cheers!
very informative. thanks mate. I came up with a few names for that brew after you mentioned what that bag was for. I probably shouldn't post them here. that temp controller looks like a beauty. how much was that to make? 17.
Well yes, you could also just put a double adaptor on each outlet, but the trouble there is they both go on at the same time, it depends what you mean. if you want to monitor two different things/mash tuns/HLT or whatever then no. You'd need a second one.
Gash Slugg im thinking of something I can set and forget while running 4 heating belts on my FV's at the same time.winter is coming along and at the moment I have a heater with a thermostat set so they remain in the 18C-22C range. I would be happier if I could get that to a constant 20C and be drawing less power.
Victor Bitter No you'd need 4! you could run the heater off the stc but again its not sensing the temp of each fermenter, only one, or the ambient temp of the enclosure.
The actual controller STC-1000 can be bought of ebay for under $20, just takes some wire a few connectors and some plugs. I have a video which shows them a bit closer. ua-cam.com/video/S4xZx7VO2U4/v-deo.html
mate just what I've been looking for! I've been reading in 1 gallon brews (approx 3.8 ltrs) to not boil more than that amount. i see you went with 5 ltrs. does that affect the brew in any way???
Its a temperature controller, while not entirely needed, as the slow cooker will likely keep enough heat by itself, it helps keep a more accurate temperature. Cheers!
Really clever idea of seeing how an ale would come out. Thinking out of the box and thinking of new folks like me. Love these type of Vlogs. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I'll put up the tasting video of this beer in the next few days! Cheers!
Gash Slugg looking forward to that can almost taste it already
Great video Gash. Very cool using the slow cooker and nice to see how it works with the STC. Plenty of ideas and tips for everyone! Cheers mate
Thanks mate, Cheers!

great idea! will definitely give it a crack for small batches. also, where did you get that huge funnel? i can only ever find tiny ones! :)
***** It was from a home brew shop, they usually have some large ones, also check commercial kitchen supply stores, I spent months looking in department stores for a cheap one to no avail. Cheers!
Hey I see you used yeast from an previously opened package. I've been warned against doing this. Is it safe to do?
great vid, cheers andy.
Thanks mate!

was about $25 for the STC delivered and about $15 for the rest of the parts at a guess! Cheers!
Gash Slugg cheers mate thanks. could you wire up 4 outlets to the one box?

Where did you buy or how did you build your temperature controller?
Thanks! for your videos.

Jim Katsiouras hmmm I'm not sure why they would say not boil more then 3.8L. Do you have a link that I could look at?
I'll find a link but they're just instructing to get it to the 1 gallon and no more. ... no reason why so was curious myself to the logic
first all grain and used sous vide machine
Hey Gash. I know it's an old vid but is the recipe posted anywhere? The current link isn't working. Thanks
Yep sure, forgot to update the link, Cheers! www.cellardweller.net/index.php/forum/india-pale-ale/416-black-metal-ipa-5-litre-small-batch#2010
Thanks again man.
Hey Gash, did you ever save a BeerSmith profile for the slow cooker setup?
when you say small batch how many litres are you making ? thankyou
5L or a just a bit more than a gallon. Cheers!
thanks for quick reply
WHAT is a STC?
Its a temperature controller, while not entirely needed, as the slow cooker will likely keep enough heat by itself, it helps keep a more accurate temperature. Cheers!
lol that spa photo
I'm getting movement just thinking about it
i want that shirt!
