I like to start mine indoors in seed trays. Three seeds per cell, thinned to two seedlings, then plant outdoors at three weeks old and harvest 5 weeks later. Fast turnover and tons of beets.
Same here! I've tried different varieties, different timing, different soils. Nothing works 🤨 They germinate fine, grow 2 or 3 inches, most of the leaves turn red and that's it. No more growth, no tap root, nothing. Last year I left them in all winter. The leaves grew a bit more, but that's all.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I’m in southern NH, zone 5b. I’ve tried spring and summer, but the latest is a fall crop in a raised bed. We have slugs so maybe that would affect the low number of surviving seedlings, but why they just sit there is a mystery to me. It’s lows in the 50d, highs in the 70s/80s right now
Fortuitous timing on this one! My local community farm is just starting to pull up their first beets for the season, and my family has been talking about increasing our beet use as well. Definitely going to be filing this for reference if I can find a sunny garden patch. Thanks Jeff!
This is only my second year with a vegetable garden and love growing and eating beets! I was having a hard time thinning my beets and not using them for something. I have a question this is my first garden and I have been watching your videos for months and have learned so much. I’m growing beets and want to harvest some leaves as well. I know they need leaves to grow so when can you start harvesting the leaves?
Not normally Natalie...beets are biennials....if they get a chilling cycle (winter),, they'll just go to flower and seed.....not bulb production unfortunately.
Good info. I use a site called Still Tasty to determine storage options for vegetables. That site says beets only store 2 weeks in the fridge. I don't doubt what you said in the video but do you have any idea why they would say that?
Lots of commercially grown Beets are put through an automated wash process that makes them Look more tasty in the store, but actually shortens their shelf life. Remember that Jeff said not to wash them!
Its exactly as patricia said....washing them just ruins the storage process. Keep them dry, remove the greens, and just brush off excess dirt. They store for a LONG time.
I've grown beets for a few years, some good results and some not so good. Every video I watch says beet seed have multiple seeds but I've only ever seen one sprout from my seeds. Any idea why?
Not tried eating them raw - always boil them. Never eaten Beetroot leaves either.. Any recipes for raw beets? I put boiled beets in salad or garlic/tomato & beet sandwiches :) ooooh do you have a pickling beets recipe video??
beet leaves make a beautiful substitute for cabbage rolls. I use pear barley instead of rice (we can't grow rice in Alberta, so why not use something we do grow) and then make a dill garlic cream sauce to serve! Try it, you will be pleased
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Bumper harvest of beets this year so am hoping the "pull em out of the ground, trim the leaves/roots" and bung em in the fridge for 3months holds good!! Am also going to try canning some! :)

Hey, thanks for watching! For beets, I'd go containers... You can grow unlimited amounts in large containers. Then, find a crop the maggots don't like and cycle them through for a couple of seasons. Once clear, move back to beets. Also grow cover crops over winter to prevent egg laying

Great question.... You can harvest outside leaves as soon as there's inside ones to support it. Not too many... 2-3 per plant at a time.
Love how you recap. Ty
I love growing beets! I boil them, then pickle in jars. When you thin the plants, can you just toss the cut off leaves in salads?
Can you plant them in the late fall like garlic and let them go over winter and have them grow in the spring?
