We can't eat tomatoes, so I make pasta sauce using beets and carrots. It tastes very much like a tomato based pasta sauce. Thank you for the educational videos, we love watching your channel.
I've been able to control my leaf miners by inspecting the underside of the leaves every 2 (ish) days and when I see the eggs I simply rub them off between my fingers. That prevents them from actually doing their mining in the first place. As a result I haven't had to pull many leaves off this year and I've had a good crop. Love your videos :-)
I found the occasional one will still get to mine the leaves but I don't mind that, a little bit of live and let live is good. I don't want to decimate the leaf miner population but I also don't want them decimating my beetroots 🙂 @@GrowVeg
Beet greens are the best 😋. Big advantage of growing your own is to enjoy the greens that would never last on a supermarket shelf, plus super fresh roots too.
Ho man you make my day ,as I have sowned my beetroot and left them put , didn't know what to do with them, you come to me to explain the whole procedure, so for this thank you very much I appreciate the help and advice.
I love roasted beets; the earthy flavor is always so satisfyingly delicious. As always Ben- great job on all the helpful hints. It is always a pleasure to hear your voice as you teach us the best way to harvest our own vegetables. I’m enjoying my new green house and currently waiting to harvest my first beets.❤❤❤
I didn't either 🇨🇦 but mqny didn't last year in our area. I'm not sure why. I find every year there's a bumper crop of something and something else that doesn't thrive as well. Seems to change every year which can be fun/disappointing at the same time. My garden notes are funny when I look back "year of the beans" "year of the tomatoes" 😅
We did a side-by-side taste test of store bought and home-grown beets and the difference was astonishing! The home grown were much sweeter and way tastier. Just planted some yesterday, bit will sow more in plugs following your wonderful advice. THANKS BEN!! Cheers from Oz!
I grew cylindrical and Chioggia this year, and I just pulled a few Chioggia after the weather started turning cold. We had them roasted with oil, salt, and pepper, and they were so sweet, it was like they were glazed. Definitely growing more next year!
@@pr1958 It don't know if they're always that way, or if if was because I picked them after the temperatures started cooling. I have a few more out there that I'm waiting to get a bit bigger, and I'm really looking forward to my next meal with them.
Fantastic, I love beetroot and grow them in spring and fall ( autumn). A bit too hot here to grow in summer ( 9b Sacramento, Ca). I remember years ago in High School learning that beetroot was originally grown for the leaves and the roots were discarded. I like the leaves mixed in with my salads. And of course, I boil the roots and shuck the skins then chill and add to salads. Thanks Ben.
I've never been a big beet fan. We eat them pickled but never just fresh. But, that said I always have to grow them for my sister, who loves them. So, ill have to plant her some your way. As always thanks for all your help.
I love my beets! This season I planted Detroit Red, Golden, Chioggia and a mystery mixed blend. I didn't have the best harvest (Mother Nature was cruel with a month of rain in June) but I've planned an entire bed for my beet babies next year. Great video and always, I love your enthusiasm and sharing of knowledge in the shorter format, thanks!
Thanks for the advice! I've never been successful with beets, and now I suspect it's because I haven't watered them enough. I have sandy soil that drains quickly, so I really should keep on top of the watering and add more clippings. Also, it's nice to hear from another beet-lover who actually likes the earthiness of classic varieties. They're still plenty sweet!
I love your videos. I go outside and I am overwhelmed with both ideas and what to do with what soil compost and watering and your videos inspire me to focus on trying out new plants. Thank you Ben.
We eat loads of beetroot. I find they freeze really well once cooked, cut into slices. They can then be used straight from the freezer with a cheese sauce - great with the Sunday roast.
Spring will be here soon and it has already been warm here. I don't know if it's climate change, the ozone layer or what, but there are jasmines that bloom out of time. I came to your video looking for inspiration. You've given me a great idea.
I hate beets. But my husband has been suffering from an autoimmune disease and he said beets are excellent for his health. So I planted a bunch and I’m going to learn to like them.
I love beets and this is a great inspiration! Can't wait to grow mine and make roasted beet hummus. It's savory and tasty and kids love the bright pink color. Thanks for your great tutorial!
I generally thin my beet several times during the growing season. There used to be a variety of beet called Monarda which only grew one root per seed. I don't do clusters of beets because it tends to make all of the beets in the cluster misshapen. My favorite way to eat beets is to boil them, slips the skins off when done, slice them and serve them with butter, salt and pepper. There is not much better eating than this.
Thank you very much for all your helpful hints, the leaves are really nice like you say. ~,I Love boiling smaller Beets, then smothering with lightly saltrd Butter!! Delicious!! And Healthy,,,maybe not too much butter,,,XxX
I added marigolds around the beets, keeps any pests gone, as would yarrow. I did plant in spring but it went from cool to hot immediately and the beets just said, "phooey" and went to seed production. Now those seeds are back in my pots, growing without threat of pests. Marigolds still blooming, added lavender and straw flowers just to enjoy. I'll find out in about 2 months.
Good morning Ben, another educational and interesting video. We do love beets they are so healthy! We mostly grate them and drizzle vinegar over with a dash of salt + pepper and some sugar. It is used as a salad then to roast them and serve with sour cream. Just delicious. I must try the micro greens, and yes, I know, pigeons and doves just love pecking the leaves, they just get comfortable next to the seedlings and sit and eat all around them. Love the birds but they can become a nuisance. Just safe guard your seedlings. Thank you for sharing, Kind regards.
Have been really pleased with my crops as this year was the first time I had really got into it. Beetroot has been great. Love to grate and eat raw, with organic apple cider vinegar, brings out the sweetnes, yum
Hi, Thanks for the information, I tried to plant last year but it didn't go so well, now I've put some in the plug tray to see if it goes better, but it's still 2° - 3° minus degrees at night, now I have to go out and dig a new land, Greetings from Magnus k.
I grow the variety "red ball 2". Some of them reached 1 kg and they didn't change their flavour at all. Seems like good watering is key: I use a watering hose which delivers the water directly to the plants
I read somewhere that they like a little extra boron. I gave mine some & found it really did help with bigger bulbs compared to the ones without. Not a science experiment but looked promising.
@@GrowVeg ah, ok, thanks. Wasn't sure if I was going deep enough with them, or maybe like tomatoes you can put them a bit deeper. Mine look a bit leggy, with thin bulbs poking out of the soil. Cheers for the reply.👍
Thank you! I like fresh cooked red beetroot in Moroccan salad. I have created my own fusion Dutch Moroccan potato salad which I call pressure cooker salad. I put the eggs and beets in the pot with water and small diced potatoes, carrots and beans/peas in the steam basket. Turn off as soon as the pressure builds up. Meanwhile make a dressing with mayo, chopped onion, chopped fresh parsley/coriander, black pepper, cummin powder and salt to taste. Mix the beetroots separate from the other vegetables to avoid everything turning pink and decorate with the eggs. If you want to make it the Moroccan way, you separate everything and used the different colours as decoration and add lettuce, cucumber, tomato etc. For me the salad is based of nostalgia of the Moroccan restaurant version of 'salad Niçoise' That is what it's called on the menu in Moroccan street food restaurants
