I love beets and turnips. Thank you for using American Standard as well as metric for the measurements. It is appreciated.
Had no idea beet seeds produced a cluster. Learn something new every time i watch your vids!
Neither did I. It is mindboggling really
Please keep making tons of content! I love how you delivery the information, its a calming way to settle down from the day and truly informative as well.
That's very kind of you to say. Thanks for watching!
The quality of these videos is amazing, great work!
Thanks so much. 😀
his enthusiasm is nothing short of contagious
We can't eat tomatoes, so I make pasta sauce using beets and carrots. It tastes very much like a tomato based pasta sauce. Thank you for the educational videos, we love watching your channel.
Interesting - never thought of those as a tomato sauce alternative.
...and red bell pepper!
@@ohno248 Onions, garlic, mushrooms, celery and other veggies as well, it's the most amazing sauce.
@@TinaStudio1626it may not taste like tomatoes but it sounds like a very delicious alternative sauce nonetheless! 👍👍
I've been able to control my leaf miners by inspecting the underside of the leaves every 2 (ish) days and when I see the eggs I simply rub them off between my fingers. That prevents them from actually doing their mining in the first place. As a result I haven't had to pull many leaves off this year and I've had a good crop. Love your videos :-)
That's a really useful tip - thanks so much for sharing this. :-)
I found the occasional one will still get to mine the leaves but I don't mind that, a little bit of live and let live is good. I don't want to decimate the leaf miner population but I also don't want them decimating my beetroots 🙂 @@GrowVeg
In Ukraine beetroots are eaten with mayonnaise. They are boiled, peeled then grated and served with mayonnaise 😊a kind of a salad 🥗
What an intriguing way to serve them - will have to give it a try. :-)
Love the beet greens! I use them mostly in sandwiches and freeze them for smoothies. I would rather eat the greens than the roots!
i almost agree ! I love baby beets cooked w the tops then butter, good salt, lemon squeeze - ahh, divine....
Great to use them all up!
Laying down on the job again Ben? lol Great video packed with useful tips mate.
Cheers matey!
I added marigolds around the beets, keeps any pests gone, as would yarrow. I did plant in spring but it went from cool to hot immediately and the beets just said, "phooey" and went to seed production. Now those seeds are back in my pots, growing without threat of pests. Marigolds still blooming, added lavender and straw flowers just to enjoy. I'll find out in about 2 months.
Hope you get a decent crop eventually. :-)
Love beets. Didn’t have a good crop this year but I’ll keep trying. Thanks for the recap / lesson about beets. Always desirable.🇨🇦👍❤️👍🇨🇦
Always worth retrying. 😀
I didn't either 🇨🇦 but mqny didn't last year in our area. I'm not sure why. I find every year there's a bumper crop of something and something else that doesn't thrive as well. Seems to change every year which can be fun/disappointing at the same time. My garden notes are funny when I look back "year of the beans" "year of the tomatoes" 😅
Ho man you make my day ,as I have sowned my beetroot and left them put , didn't know what to do with them, you come to me to explain the whole procedure, so for this thank you very much I appreciate the help and advice.
You're most welcome - thanks for watching. :-)
I generally thin my beet several times during the growing season. There used to be a variety of beet called Monarda which only grew one root per seed. I don't do clusters of beets because it tends to make all of the beets in the cluster misshapen. My favorite way to eat beets is to boil them, slips the skins off when done, slice them and serve them with butter, salt and pepper. There is not much better eating than this.
Perfect way to serve them up. :-)
I think you may have beet your record for great puns with this one!
Nice! :-)
Thank you for your adorable audacious alliterations! I too am a beet fancier and wondered how to best grow them. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.😂
You are welcome. Big up the beets!
I love roasted beets; the earthy flavor is always so satisfyingly delicious. As always Ben- great job on all the helpful hints. It is always a pleasure to hear your voice as you teach us the best way to harvest our own vegetables. I’m enjoying my new green house and currently waiting to harvest my first beets.❤❤❤
Hope you get a fab first harvest of beets! :-)
Thank you again for another excellent video. I like watching your vids because I live in Vancouver BC and have a similar climate to yours. Better than watching vids made in say California. lol Thanks again!
How did I not see this video 'til now? Beets me!? 😁
Haha - very good!
You don't have to thin Beetroot or spring onions , multisown they will multi grow , then you can pick from the bunch as you need them .
It depends on the soil. My soil is still a bit weak, so single beets have done better than clusters. Hopefully when I get the soil good and strong I can have successful clusters.
Bro! Where was this video in April??? Oh well, next year.
He made a video about beets years back. I referred to it this year :)
September...did you notice the sweet corn unharvested at the beginning
He uploaded it now for us in NZ mate. Haha
We should have our last frost this month 👍
@@djscotty06 😃😃, big time

Was waiting for the 'block-rocking beets' line but it never came! Am growing a few beets this year, and they are looking good 🙂
Yea, but we did get the "cool beets" vibe. X
That was considered!
We eat loads of beetroot. I find they freeze really well once cooked, cut into slices. They can then be used straight from the freezer with a cheese sauce - great with the Sunday roast.
Great tip, thank you. :-)
I grew cylindrical and Chioggia this year, and I just pulled a few Chioggia after the weather started turning cold. We had them roasted with oil, salt, and pepper, and they were so sweet, it was like they were glazed. Definitely growing more next year!
Sounds sublime!
I didn't realize Chioggia was that sweet. I'll have to give it a try next year. My favorite way to cook beets is the same way you do.
@@pr1958 It don't know if they're always that way, or if if was because I picked them after the temperatures started cooling. I have a few more out there that I'm waiting to get a bit bigger, and I'm really looking forward to my next meal with them.
Raw, and grated into a salad, sometimes with carrot for an interesting colour. Then a simple sauce... my favourite is with peanut butter and apple cider vinegar... sounds weird but the taste is amazing and it feels super healthy to eat
And the woody ones can be fermented into a Polish style barszcz. Tangy and also healthy.
Wow! That sounds amazing! Do you roast them first? Must know more about this sauce!
What an ingenious and unique sauce!
Thank you for the great tips. I tried growing beets for 2 years, but it did not work out. Will give it another try now.
Please do. :-)
I love my beets! This season I planted Detroit Red, Golden, Chioggia and a mystery mixed blend. I didn't have the best harvest (Mother Nature was cruel with a month of rain in June) but I've planned an entire bed for my beet babies next year. Great video and always, I love your enthusiasm and sharing of knowledge in the shorter format, thanks!
Hope you enjoy a much heartier harvest next season. :-)
I read somewhere that they like a little extra boron. I gave mine some & found it really did help with bigger bulbs compared to the ones without. Not a science experiment but looked promising.
That's intriguing - will have to look into this myself. :-)
Well, I’m convinced…I’ll give them a try 😊 thanks for your knowledge and enthusiasm 🇦🇺
Roast them, they’re delicious😉.
Great stuff! You won’t regret it!
I like beets roasted in an excellent olive oil, seasoned with a smidgen of garlic.
Yum!
Beet skins are great for a natural dye!
We did a side-by-side taste test of store bought and home-grown beets and the difference was astonishing! The home grown were much sweeter and way tastier. Just planted some yesterday, bit will sow more in plugs following your wonderful advice. THANKS BEN!! Cheers from Oz!
Great job. Great to have proven the value of growing your own like that.
I hate beets. But my husband has been suffering from an autoimmune disease and he said beets are excellent for his health. So I planted a bunch and I’m going to learn to like them.
They are very good for you!
What an informative wonderful video, I enjoyed every second of it once again!! Thank you 😊
Fantastic, I love beetroot and grow them in spring and fall ( autumn). A bit too hot here to grow in summer ( 9b Sacramento, Ca). I remember years ago in High School learning that beetroot was originally grown for the leaves and the roots were discarded. I like the leaves mixed in with my salads. And of course, I boil the roots and shuck the skins then chill and add to salads. Thanks Ben.
Amazed that the roots used to be discarded!
Thanks for the advice! I've never been successful with beets, and now I suspect it's because I haven't watered them enough. I have sandy soil that drains quickly, so I really should keep on top of the watering and add more clippings. Also, it's nice to hear from another beet-lover who actually likes the earthiness of classic varieties. They're still plenty sweet!
Yes, definitely worth keeping up on the watering and adding plenty of organic matter if you have sandy soil. Hope you get a great crop next season :-)
I like like to dehydrate to make a beet powder. Also ferment them with some garlic and ginger
Love beets! Thank you for doing a video on them! I use the water leftover from cooking the beets as dye in creating on fabric and water colours.
What a great idea!
I love beets ❤
Same here! :-)
I grew a 10 kilo beetroot for a local show. Get me!
Wow, what a result!
Beautiful video 🙏
Love beetroot grew some nice ones this year in Oxford England 🏴
Great job!
I have trouble with mice eating my beets. This year I planted catnip around them and they did great!
There is a great Polish-lithuanian dish, a cold soup made of buttermilk, beets, cucumber, leek and dill. Perfect for hot summer days.
Sounds just the job!
Great video
I grow the variety "red ball 2". Some of them reached 1 kg and they didn't change their flavour at all. Seems like good watering is key: I use a watering hose which delivers the water directly to the plants
Watering is so important. 😀
Nice one Ben Another great video full of helpful advice
I can't grow decente beats whatsoever. I but i will be trying again and again until i succeed. Thank you for the inspiration and information. 😊
Keep trying!

I love your videos. I go outside and I am overwhelmed with both ideas and what to do with what soil compost and watering and your videos inspire me to focus on trying out new plants. Thank you Ben.

beets are my favorite!
I've never been a big beet fan. We eat them pickled but never just fresh. But, that said I always have to grow them for my sister, who loves them. So, ill have to plant her some your way. As always thanks for all your help.
Do keep trying them - I really love them roasted. :-)

Spring will be here soon and it has already been warm here. I don't know if it's climate change, the ozone layer or what, but there are jasmines that bloom out of time.
I came to your video looking for inspiration. You've given me a great idea.
So pleased. I hope you have a great growing season. :-)

About to sow beet seeds this weekend! I like to add spinach or chard in scrambled eggs, I’ll have to try the beet leaves!
