As a Chef, few vegetables are better than beets. A roasted beet salad with goat cheese, walnuts, olive oil and balsamic vinegar is one of life‘s great pleasures. Looking forward to growing my own home! Thanks for the tips.
One thing I really enjoy about your channel is your transparency and genuineness. It is obvious to me, your listener, that you value my requests and my education on gardening. You were so apologetic about missing a beet growing guide. So sweet! Thank you for not coming across as a know-it-all novice Master Gardener! It is refreshing. A great balance of humility and confidence, a wealth of knowledge presented in such a way to make me, your subscriber feel respected, not talked down to. Hope your channel thrives for many years. BTW- your family is adorable, hope we can get glimpses of them again soon. ❤
Luke, you just keep on coming with these awesome videos! I am planting beets this year and you’re always right on time! You do NOT talk too much in your videos. Without you explaining everything, my tired mom brain wouldn’t fully grasp it and I like knowing the “why”. Keep up the good work!!
Just rediscovered beets. Did not like them as a kid [who does?] and spent my whole life avoiding them. Tried some the other day and wow, I was missing out. Now I try to include them as often as I can. Been eating beet microgreens, but decided to try to grow all the way. Great video
2 gardening seasons of trying to grow beets in northern Wisconsin. All I got was leaves and no bulbs. My Master-Gardener friend told me my soil was probably too high in nitrogen and too low in phosphorus. We had the soil tested AND it's too high in phosphorus and low in nitrogen. We applied the recommended amount of nitrogen to the whole garden; hopefully this corrects the problem and Luke is right!!
My beets didn't do anything in our last cool season here in S. Florida. I did a soil test, through Unibest. I found that my "Mel's Mix" soil was extremely deficient in both potassium and nitrogen. My mistake is that I didn't add as much fresh compost as I normally do. This growing guide confirms what I knew about beets and nitrogen. I'm sure not having potassium might have been a small part of the problem as well. Thanks for the info!
I'm glad you did this video. I planted the beet seeds (that I got from you) on August 25th. They were up in about 5 days I learned a lot from you about growing beets. Here's hoping I have good results. Thanks.
Ya know you just can't beat a good video about growing beets! I mean your video beats the pants off other videos that just beat around the beet leaves. Instead you beat em to the punch Everytime! Thanks!!!
Grew golden beets they were very good ! Going to try a crop of red for winter.Had grown parsley and only used so much so we turned the rest into the soil. Hopefully this crop will be even better also added some sand to make the soil to make the soil easier for them to expand. I just love beet greens too ! 😊
Having little twigs and pieces of wood in your compost is great, it helps aerate the soil and retains moisture like perlite. Just avoid bigger pieces of wood or stones, particularly for root crops as they can damage the vegetables as they grow.
I plan on lots of beets next summer. I am glad you presented this. I was a little apprehensive because I have been told that they are hard to grow. Thanks and havagudun.
I just put my beets down a few days ago and they're popping up! I'm in SW PA and my soil is kind of crappy (this is my first garden) but I'm hoping to get a few good ones! I love a beer roasted in the oven! YUMMY!!
Thanks so much for explaining the nitrogen thing. I've heard some saying you need lots of nitrogen while others say not to because it'll produce leaves but not the root. More leaves = more root makes complete sense.
Wonderful, thank you. A segment on beet pests is missing though, I’ve had problems with beet leaf miners every time I’ve grown them. Frustrating. Nix that, found your video regarding leaf miners, thanks!
Thank you SO much. I've planted beets in the past and nothing happened. This time, they actually sprouted. Can't get then to go further. Now, I know what to do. Maybe, I can get then to get bigger.
What do you think about covering the beet portion of the bed with plastic until you start to get sprouts to help keep the moisture in but allow the sun in?
As the video pointed out, beets are the easiest thing to grow. I make a smoothie out of them mixed with banana and lemon. I also add one leave but the leave has a strong taste and you may not like it; although the leave contains lots of nutrients.
I'm on my fifth year of trying to grow beets. I have never gotten them over a few inches and no bulb. This year I used Trifecta for the first time and now I have massive leaves but no big root to hold the beet leaves up. Everyone says beets are so easy to grow but I've had it. This will be my last year. I have done everything recommended from every beet teacher out there. 😥
Thanks Luke!!! Can't wait to see how these turn out :) Keep up the great work just shrug off those off comments :) Know that you are doing a great job and you have many great supporters out here :)
Bunnies love beet seedlings so I had to succession plant twice. Just picked a nice one yesterday as the garden is now bunny proof. Do you plant the seeds differently if you want just the baby greens for salads? Do you have a borscht recipe for us too? Good info - didn't know about the N needs.
What I don’t understand is when people talk about dirt levels. And when people test them. People back in the day used to grow crops without testing soils. They figured it out without all these fancy tests now. It’s frustrating when you speak to someone that knows plant crop growing and they ask about the dirt levels. Thank you for sharing
Note: Cylindra beets, are supposed to be oblong, rather than round... keep that in mind; they are almost like carrots. Been using potassium nitrate (Stump Remover) to start almost nearly all my veggies, helps with growing luscious green leaves early, keeps them healthy, makes the rest of the growth cycle easier... then start giving phosphorus once I start seeing the top of beet's head popping through the ground. Many experts consider KNO3 to be a "luxury fertilizer" because it is used instantly by the plant; does not require breakdown like others. For early rooting, I use Rhyzotonic, which is seaweed made... works amazing. Looks like my problem was given them too much sun (12-16 hrs), not enough phosphorus and too tight of soil. Will more likely use sand and some Perlite to loosen things up, maybe some charcoal chunk. They were out in the scorching heat of summer and I think, stunted their growth; last summer was relentless with the heat. Beets made delicious canned preserves though... almost none left. :'(
Thanks! I don't want the beets too high glycemic. I do want the leaves as high nutrient content and great liver detox also make much tastier keto chips than kale. So loose soil and lots of sun awesome.
Thanks for the info about Nitrogen. I use 5-10-10, but I guess I better add more N. I thought they would be like radishes-too much N and the roots won't form.
No link for the beet harvest, but it shouldn't be hard to find it, sooo..... Thanks for another good video; I look forward to seeing THIS crop and how it does.
I appreciate all the details in your how-to's , Luke :) . Hello from western WI btw. . I am wondering if, on the topic of keeping even moisture levels for the beets ( and most other crops ), if mulches are recommended for beets. Since it should work in our climate and am usually on more clay than sand soils ( am moving again ), I plan on doing the mulching with compost ( turns out it counts, as a soil covering ) as Charles Dowding and other no-dig & no-till growers do . Richard Perkins & Singing Frogs Farm being my other main inspirations along w principles of the back-to-eden methodology. In our climate, hay, grass or wood chips being my other mulch choices. If u ever have knowledge of whether or not mulches at all ( besides compost ) or which kinds, are recommended or not, thanks for including it. Have a blessed season !
Quick question: I pot planted beet seeds inside in April because I live in a colder climate. They sprouted really quickly and beautifuly. When they got to about 2-3 inches long, they lost their leaves, wilted and rotted. Any advice?
To add to the soil and possibly light issues root veggies are not the best thing to plant indoors for transplant. Container planting is fine moving it outdoors but root veggies beets carrots rhubarb radishes etc do much better without transplant.
Do you have any tips for beets seedlings that seem to have stopped growing? Planted 17 days ago, they emerged out of the soil on day 8 and haven’t grown any visible growth since. They get full sun and we used a raised bed potting mix
Do you soak your seeds before planting? I always do but not sure if it’s necessary.. I also start some inside, and when I transplant they look a little sad but always do fine and perk up in a few weeks..
I know beets are cold hardy, but what about for planting? What is the night time low threshold they can sprout in? We are starting to bounce around between 34-55 every few days now at night, and 50-72 during the day.Should I hold off or can I plant mow?
Thanks Luke! One question though, I presume you thin your seedlings when they come up? Do you have a 'best' method to thin? I've found with most, if not all beet seeds (same with spinach, Swiss chard and silverbeet as other examples), 1/2/3/4 sometimes 5 plants will come up in the one spot (obviously multiple seeds in 1 'pod') I absolutely hate thinning seedlings as I don't want to kill any of them, and have tried leaving them as is, but that doesn't seem to work either! Is there any way you can get around it so you don't have to thin, or do u just have to do it? I must admit I was a little surprised that you plant 2 seeds at 3 in. considering I've found I end up with multiple seedlings up, but obviously your 2 seeds to 3 in. Is best, as your results are quite clear! I would love to see your recipe for pickled beets if you do that with this harvest (or any other beet preserving methods-I did see the imitation grape jelly one!)
I don't see a harvest link below? Also, aren't beet seeds actually clusters of multiple seeds? If so, what are the odds one wouldn't sprout if the seeds aren't old or were stored improperly?
I wish most/all "expert" gardeners could agree on more things. I just watched another beet video where they say that too much nitrogen results in bigger leaves (as this video also says), but then you get smaller beets (this video says you get bigger beets by adding the nitrogen, not smaller). Thus the other video says too much nitrogen is a problem, whereas this video says you need to add more nitrogen. And then this video says you need full sun and lots of it, whereas others say you need to cut down on sun and give them some shade.
This seems like a good summary, but what is really missing was not this guide. What is missing is your entry for "How to Grow Donuts - Complete Growing Guide." Show how that can be done successfully, and you will have created the greatest gardening guide ever.

You are correct chef!
I'm glad I planted some beets, I sure love them
Agree 💯😋

All I can say is thank god for a gardener that can finally speak properly why do so many Garden/ Allotment YTers mumble and whisper in their videos!!
I love roasted beets. But my favorite part of beets? Beet greens! I like the greens sauteed in butter and EVOO with a little garlic. Delish!
Faith yes, my favorite greens!! My Italian grandma made them and put potatoes in with them also 😋
Love beets. The greens are my fav!

Hello! I was not successful last year with beets, so I came to the expert to be successful this year. Thank you for this.
I'm glad you did this video. I planted the beet seeds (that I got from you) on August 25th. They were up in about 5 days
I learned a lot from you about growing beets. Here's hoping I have good results. Thanks.
How were your results
Thank's. Putting beet's in this week. Stay safe and healthy. God bless

Best veggie chips from beet leaves too😋
@@kristarogers6997 how do you make them?

Should have added some banging music so you could drop a funky beet.
I know this is a year old... but I'm gonna laugh about this comment every time I'm planting beets from now on...
Lol😂 funny!
sampson028 same lol
Thyme to drop a beet
Doug on Nickelodeon the BEETS was a rock band
Thanks for this video! I just planted beets this morning. You are VERY inspiring! 😊
I plan on lots of beets next summer. I am glad you presented this. I was a little apprehensive because I have been told that they are hard to grow. Thanks and havagudun.
Another great video. This will be my first year growing beets, and I needed some tips. Thanks for the info Luke.

Lots of N. I can already see myself pushing wheelbarrows of horse manure. I like your videos! Thanks.
I'm going to try growing my green beans beside my beets this year
Never tried beets before but Isabella and I bought some from your store. Thanks for the tips!
Awesome I love beets so I can grow all year long I live in Arizona I probably going to struggle in the summer but it’s ok thank you
where did you get that soil? If you made it, do you know if there is a soil you can buy (already made) that is similar?
You can make your own dirt by composting, pretty easy
Thanks! I don't want the beets too high glycemic. I do want the leaves as high nutrient content and great liver detox also make much tastier keto chips than kale. So loose soil and lots of sun awesome.
Good in-depth growing guide
I have an asparagus bean teepee and I’m thinking the center of that will be the perfect spot to plant my beets!
Don't beet yourself up.
Lol!
Boo Radley if you can’t beet them, join them.
Lol good one
I have a beet plant and I named it beat
I love beets! Pickled is the best:) I never grew them but I have a couple of empty beds so I think I'll beet them up 😂
Thanks for the info about Nitrogen. I use 5-10-10, but I guess I better add more N. I thought they would be like radishes-too much N and the roots won't form.
Saw this just today… timely, because I’m just about to plant beets. 👍👍
I'm going to try planting beets next to my beans so they can get the nitrogen directly
My garden was planted a few weeks ago, my first garden!
No link for the beet harvest, but it shouldn't be hard to find it, sooo..... Thanks for another good video; I look forward to seeing THIS crop and how it does.
Loving all the beet puns 😂

Don’t know if you know it today but compost ist acidic - slightly acidic 5.8-6.7 pH but it buffers the ph well :)
Hey Luke! Thanks! You're talking about even soil moisture; how about mulching? Watched a lot of your videos and I've wondered why you don't use mulch.
Quick question: I pot planted beet seeds inside in April because I live in a colder climate. They sprouted really quickly and beautifuly. When they got to about 2-3 inches long, they lost their leaves, wilted and rotted. Any advice?
I know you asked this a year ago, but since you say you planted in a pot, maybe the soil you used didn't drain well? Too much moisture will cause rot.

That’s the nature of the beet.
Hi Luke, great video, thanks for the info. Haven't herd someone use the word narley in years lol 😂 take care my friend.
Can u harvest the leaves while beets grow?
Sadly too late to grow beets for me, but this is great to know for next year!
what varieties of red beets can you plant together without cross pollination?
Do you have a video on growing fiddle heads? Preferably indoors but outside would also be useful.
After you plant your vegetable seeds, when do you add mulch and which one would you recommend?
Do you have any tips for beets seedlings that seem to have stopped growing? Planted 17 days ago, they emerged out of the soil on day 8 and haven’t grown any visible growth since. They get full sun and we used a raised bed potting mix
Hi Luke, Do you have the harvest video that you mentioned? It's not in the description box. Thanks.
Dang u guys beet me to the comment section.
Haha try harder next time.
Joke is getting corny. :-P
Getting corny or beety?
Lettuce beet you for once.
Thankyou for the tip on revive it saved a yellow strawberry of mine :) I think I have my best medium for growing now -coco and cast.
Great information!
Wow, great video! As usual =)
I didn’t see the link in the description for the beet harvest that you mentioned. I’ll try to find it in a search.
i'm not seeing the link to the beet harvest video
Me neither
Do you soak your seeds before planting? I always do but not sure if it’s necessary.. I also start some inside, and when I transplant they look a little sad but always do fine and perk up in a few weeks..
Such great infomation ! Thank you. I love beets and I didnt realize it was nitrogen I was missing

Sorry, asked for this video subject didn't see it earlier. I'm all ears Thank you
Would the nitration in that’s in master blend work good in soil like in water based plants

this was very helpful.
Interesting advice
Thanks, good video
Do a ginger guide
my beets always grow nice leaves and a teeny weeny little root, like a tiny immature carrot... how can I fix it ? (clay soil, with compost, long days)
Too much fertilizer
I hope you see this? What ratio of trifecta do you use I was looking on Amazon and they have different ratios. Do you use one ratio for all vegetables?
My beets were growing just fine and in a matter of days the leaves turned very dark and crispy. Do you have any idea what caused that? Thanks
Where is the link to the harvest video?
Do people top or prune beets? I like the greens and would take a few per plant if I thought it would encourage growth but not if the opposite is true. What do u think?
I know it's not recommended to transplant beets but do have any tips for attempting to transplant a few? Also do you have a tutorial on growing ancient wheat and also for growing alfalfa?
Transplant as soon as they break the surface
How do you keep seeds in place when watering? Small seeds tend to move. Especially carrot seeds.
Can you grow beets inside in the winter, please explain? Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing.
When are the pickling and canning videos coming out?
for cannning go to deepsouth homestead
Ok I have my beets grow , cylindrical beets ,so it’s still cold but maybe in beginning May I put them in ground, so I will put tree together .Love experiment.Hope works for me, I just see video harvest that beets.
Great video! Thanks for sharing all your experience. Do you ship seeds outside the US?
Question: regarding your comments about beets needing more nitrogen, is that the same for sweet potatoes and other root vegetables ???
