As a barber, I can tell you that these blades are designed for professional use, I would bet at least 90% of them end up in shavettes. Since shavettes are essentially the most aggressive form of DE razor, a smooth blade is really what you want. And since they will mostly be used on hairlines and the back of the neck, it doesn't need to be that sharp. Derby actually sells cases of pre-cut half blades just for "profesyonel" use.

Derby's were the first blades I ever used since they came with my DE89 and I wasn't all that impressed by them but when I used them in my 37c or my R41 they became totally different blades. I would get far better shaves from my more aggressive razors with blades like Derby's.
This will be an interesting series, looking forward to it.

I really enjoy these reviews. I am currently waiting on my Astra SP order. I started with Derby blades and i do like them. I'm acually wanting to try something sharper, hence the Astra SP. I have to love Derby blades because they have proven to me that i can not only live without my very expensive3 and 4 blade cartridges. I'm finding that with proper technique, i can get a better, closer shave. Its amazing at 9 dollars for a hundred blades. For some reason i assumed that the old DE style blades would chew up my face like those cheap disposable bic shavors. The DE blades are superior. Go Old School!

Nick another great addition to the video library. I only used (past tense) the Derby blade when I was trying to dial in the Dracula Razor (a/k/a Muhle R41) where the smoothness helped the learning curve . . . since gone to the Astra Platinum for that razor. As a commenter below notes the PolSilver is a great blade . . . my personal preference of late.

I've been working my way through a sampler pack, and was avoiding the Derbys. My favorites had been Astra and Feather, which are both pretty sharp. I was amazed when the Derby laid down a killer first pass like a feather, and then backed it up with an against-the-grain pass with no irritation and easily got my hard spots where all other blades cut me or force me ro leave it undone. Wow! Second shave same story, killer. Third shave, it was like shaving with a steak knife, with blood everywhere and little chunks of my face floating in the sink. I feel betrayed! I'm going to try another Derby and see if it goes chainsaw massacre on me again.

Agreed. I bought a 100 pack of the 7 o'clock super stainless gillette based on his review and they've been amazing. I was finally able to get my head as smooth as glass. The fist stoke with the blade and I knew they were much sharper than the Astra SPs I was using.

These blades are great. Since 2017 they are made to be sharper and smoother. I just completed my 4th shave with a Derby and it's still going great. I reckon I can get 6 shaves out of a blade. My beard is course and only sharper blades like Astra SP, Personna Lab Blue, Russian Gillette 7 O'clock Super Stainless and Gillette Wilkinson Sword work well for me.
But the newer Derby Extra blades are just awesome. The second and third shaves were even better than the first, which was great to begin with. For those who disliked them due to it's dullness, give it another try.

I've used Derby blades for maybe 10 years just because they were the cheapest I could find. Around $7 for 100 off of Ebay or Amazon. After watching 100 some shaving videos I'm definitely going to try some samplers and give away my remaining Derby's for Xmas presents. It's probably a good starter blade. I'm definitely going to try Persona Blue's,( because they're USA made) , Feather, Astra green's, and Wilkinson Sword blades. Thanks again for a great video.

I just shaved with the Derby, Barbasol, and Merkur 34 C and can tell you it was an excellent shave. Followed it up with some Witch Hazel and Pinaud Clubman. I'm ready for date night now. Too bad I don't have a date. My beard is average I would say and doesn't require a super sharp blade to cut down and chop wood. I can see shaving with this combo every day.

I use Derby blades almost exclusively for my Merkur R39 Slant and I get great results with them. Many people slam these blades, however, on a medium aggressive razor, these work great. Now, in my Merkur 38c, they don't do a great job.

I love the Derby's, good for 4 to 5 shaves and cost buttons. On a different note you are saying that there are blades coming from England, unfortunately there isn't a current production of DE blades on the British isles, last production run of Wilkinson Sword was around 15 years ago.

Great video. You said The Symmetry works well with the Derby blades, so I think that will be the next razor I pick up. I've been looking for a razor to make the less sharp blades sing and I look forward to trying Derby blades with this razor. It's funny, because there is so much negativity online about Derby blades, I'm kinda nervous about picking them up. Hoping I don't hate them like most people seem to. Ah well, even if I don't like them, it's not like I'm spending more than a few dollars. Cheers, Nick.

Up-date on the Derby Extra Razor Blades sold in the Blue Package here in the EU. Testing the blade in my Bluebeard Shimitar and Wilkinson Butterfly Razors I found the Derby Blade to be very comfortable, in the Bluebeard it was so smooooooth I thought I forgot to load the blade. On the Wilkinson....very nice though not quite as clean as the Bluebeard on the first stroke. I recommend testing these Derby Blades, they might be the shave for you.

I know nothing about blades, but I am seriously noticing bad results.. like with irritation on clients that have thick hair and it pulls way to much, to the point where I leave small cuts. Its annoying, but because of you! I am happy you help me choose Perma Sharp Razor Blades on your other videos. So thank you! your a life savor. - Blake the Barber

I appreciate the honest review. I had a light razor and used feathers....worked winderful. I moved to a more aggressive razor and the feathers were too much for my hypersensitive skin.
I moved to the Derby Extra blades in the aggressive razor and keep feathers in my lightweight razor. Perfect combo. I do have to make an additional pass but it is worth the time to not have a fire pit on my face for 4 days.

I keep some Derby blades handy. Being a truck driver my shaves are in different locations and water quality affects lather quality. I will get a bad shave even with the best soaps. The next shave I'll use a mild razor (Gillette Blue Tip or Schick Krona) with the Derby so as not to aggravate my skin any further.

I love this discussion! The first blades I used were the Gillette Blues, and thought, this isn't bad (I used to just tear my face up with cartridges), then I got Green Astras, and was like Wow! And then I must have had a real good run of Sharks, and for me, no issues and the best shave I get. I got a sample of the Russin blades off of Ebay - Voskhod etc.. Polsilvers blew me away too... Am very new to shaving with safety razor. Those are the first blades I tried.
1st shave does not count... it was bad but because of my lack of experience.
2nd shave was excellent. 3rd shave, the blade started to "fade", and had razor bumps on the neck.
4th shave was too much. the 3 passes didn't do the job - ended with more bumps than the previous one as I had to pass over again on many area.
I am trying ASTRA SP tomorrow. Not so impressed with Derby though. But I have no point of comparison for now.

Several yrs back, one of the first great blades I got in a sampler pack was the Derbys. But when I ordered a 35 pack, from the same source, they were horrible. Since then I've ordered a few more packs and find the performance inbetween the first two impressions. I'm not sure if this is from manufacturing variances or counterfeiting or whatever. I just can't explain how packs of a blade can work so good, then so bad, then not as bad. I've not had this problem w/ other blades.

Pretty much the same experience I had the with the Derby blades. These were my first DE blades ever, and I my skin did not get along with this blade.

i know this is an old video, and youve grown alot in your channel.
i was wondering if you planned on trying the post 2016 redesigned derby blades?
When they retooled for the newer derby premium blades they also changed these blades. they made them thinner (.1mm thinner) and supposedly sharper and more comfortable.
if you don't want to buy them i can send you some of the new ones, the derby premium, and even the derby USTA (master) blades taped to a sheet of paper or something so its easy to send.
personally i haven't thoroughly tried them but thought you may like to since you haven't done may new blade trys on your channel.

I have some of these and some shark super chromes in the mail cause the Astra's I bought with my Merkur adjustable razore were just too sharp for me as a beginer. Reading comments I won't be too worried about using a more aggressive setting on my razor if I'm not getting any irritation and I find it's not a close enough shave.

I think you're right. These are more-or-less "starter" blades for newish shavers.
I think for the vast majority of shavers who do any kind of blade exploration, some combination of Astra, Polsilver, Feather, Personna, several of the Gillettes (Silver Blues, 7oclocks SP, SS, Sharp Edge, etc.) are simply going to work better.
They don't punish you with bloodletting for sloppy technique--which is terrific if you are still figuring it out--but they also don't reward you for great technique either the same way, for instance, a Feather or Silver Blue does.

I shave 1 pass against the grain with Derby Extra in a shavette... and then I clean up with a feather in a safety razor... particularly in the problem spots I've gut under and behind my chin.
Baby smooth every time. Sometimes, I can even get baby smooth in 1 pass.
    Other details:
I shave after my daily shower
I put a bit of petroleum jelly in one hand, wet the other hand, rub together, and put that down as a bottom layer lubricant.
I bring 2 ice cubes into the bathroom before my shower. I use the first ice cube to tighten and cool my skin after the shower, and it also helps get the vaseline layer just like I want it.
I use barbasol (cream really doesn't matter since the bottom layer is petroleum jelly anyway. It's just there to help track your shave and to make it easier to splash your shavette clean)
    1 pass against the grain.
Under the chin last...and for me, count on one or 2 very precise, very aggressive passes to the problem areas.
    After shave:
    rinse face
    alum block
    cocoa butter lotion
    Baby smooth every time.

Tyler - what I did not say was that I only make one pass whereas some shavers make 2-3. Why only one pass? The second pass cuts the hair in the opposite direction giving greater possibility for in-grown hairs, it also shaves off more skin, creating razor burn/irritation. A third pass only worsens the second pass. I don't remember the last time I had an in-grown hair or razor burn, face feels great. I use the How To Grow a Mustache Symmetry razor (aggressive), so the Derby tones it down, a Feather blade would peel my skin in this razor. Derby is my only blade. To each his own. Happy Shaving...Air Power!

derby max 2 shaves, voskhod , astra and wilkinson sword up to 4, personna red for me only one, lord 2 to 3, all the dorcos only 1 shave , greetings robert ( but this is my experience , everything does depend much which rasor you are using , if your beard is very hard , etc etc ) maybe the best blade feather ( but also more expensive ).

Idk what it was but I went through a pack of these blades and they were terrible. I had to put pressure on the razor to get it to cut and I ended up with razor bumps and a few nicks. I'll stick to sharper blades like Astra sp,perma sharp, or Gillette 7 o'clock ss.

Not sure why, but when i ordered my safety razor, i went with the merkur long handle... already i'm seeming to think the 34c might have been a better choice. I think I went with the long handle just because i'm used to the cartridges, and figured the long handle somehow would have been better. Never using them again anyway!! I do need to order a second safety razor to take to my camp... prob gonna be the 34c

    • @666dynomax
      @666dynomax 8 років тому

+Bu Jammy long handle was the 3 piece merkur 23c. apparently the head is same design as the 2pc 34/33C so i've read. Don't quote that. I prefer the short handle to long but only because the extra length does nothing extra.... that being said it doesn't hurt either. I do prefer Astra to Derby's or Merkur blades.

What I noticed about those Derby blades is the resistance or drag. If you're getting on in years and have, and don't let us be shy about this, wrinkles and sagging it makes you very susceptible to cuts. I bought a large pack of these Derby blades and have thrown them away except for the plastic holders which I use to store my used Astra blades

    • @666dynomax
      @666dynomax 8 років тому

+Alan Dean I'm not old, but they drag a lot. Astra SP's treat me much better. The Derby's are at least as good (by good i mean bad) as the Fusion Cartridges I used to kill my face with. I keep trying to use them, but I think for the 15 or 20 bucks its really doing me more harm than good, and kind of irritating my face. Is there anything better than Astra SP's?? They were the first blade I tried other than the Merkur that came with my razor (which also was not a good blade)

    • @alandean2
      @alandean2 8 років тому

+666dynomax Like you I found the Astra blades to be an improvement but I have found better. For me BiC and Gillette 7 o'clock (green pack) give good results. I do use the Astra blades when I am travelling but use only once. I think the razor is also important. I get best results with the iKon 102 slant which is weighty but handles well with, for me, just the right amount of blade exposure. A bit pricey at £70 but people spend much more on electric razors.

Started DE shaving with these awful things. No good on my wire wool beard, draggy, dull & irritating. Quickly learned I need a sharp blade to cut the undergrowth. My favourite is Polsilver SI, really works well for me, followed by Perma Sharp, Feathers, Nacet, GSB & Astra SP. Thats my top 6, all of them give me a close comfortable irritation free shave.

Derby is a well known and highly popular razor in the world. It is produced by Azmüsebat, which bought the Derby brand in 96. It is sold as 5 blades in a plastic box. Platinum, ceramic and polymer coated. I don't know why Azmüsebat writes alloy elements such as chromium and tungsten, which are the standard additives of stainless steels, on the packaging as if it were a special coating, it could be so that it would look like. But it is a not so special razor. Although the production quality is good, it has technical defects. Although its sharpness is average, its comfort is very bad due to being a rough razor blade. It is one of the roughest and most uncomfortable razors with German merkur. The contents of the red package containing 10 razors produced for the American market are the same.

They can put as many coatings as they want, but it's like putting lipstick on a pig, it remains a dull and tuggy blade. At this price point for this segment (less sharp, more smooth), there are much better blades - e.g. the Voskhod with a single teflon coating.

I could see why Derby or Shark would be perfect for some. I thought I'd found by blade of choice each time gliding along the side of my face until I got to my goatee area and found they just couldn't cut through it. Felt silky smooth up until that point that they hit coarser hair that was not sharp enough to cut. I didn't have any complaints about them other than they just couldn't get through the coarser facial hair around my mouth and chin.
