Quasimodo Sanctuary

- So here's a pencil test of the sanctuary shot from Hunchback of Notre Dame. The background of the cathedral was animated first by Mike Merell in 3D. Then that wireframe footage was printed out onto paper frame by frame. I then animated the characters over the top on paper. This is before the final sound mix obviously, and if you listen you can clearly hear Gary Trousdale, one of the film's directors, yelling "Ahh, you can't get her now Frollo!"
Absolutely stunning man. The perspectives and camera movement really complement the feeling of the scene
Oh hello ginger
@@shroomdoggg hello buddy
How ya doin
Gingerblossom I doin good UwU
@@shroomdoggg thas good
Did you know you're pretty cool
Gingerblossom :O
No u
My left ear enjoyed this almost as much as both of my eyes.
So talented!!
Naive Fan: "So what pencil did you-" (gets slapped with a wet mackarel)
When i reach the other end of the Gym and free my teammates from the other teams jail
It just amazes me that this is done all on paper
Looks sooooo good!
the old school style babe!
all the animation in that time was done this way
MAO old style is the best style and it needs to come back right now
Wait- WHAT?
@@stephenterry6264 the first major example being Ariel going down the stairs in Little Mermaid, though a lot of people point to the Great Mouse Detective's clock tower, even though that wasn't what we would traditionally call computer animation, computer drawn, but not computer animated.
Yes. They literally did not understand what CG was, and instead programmed a computer to draw, or so the story goes.
It's amazing how in a short time span, Disney went from one now painfully noticeable CG background in Mermaid to masterfully executed backgrounds in Hunchback and Beauty and the Beast.
no way. i thought this was an uncolored 3d rendition
When James Baxter uploads, get ready for all your animations to be put to shame
😫👌
@@JosephM Now that's an emoji combination I've never seen
For real tho-
I laughed so hard.
@SomeHumanOnThe Internet It is good to see where the competition is at.
Ahh, you can't get her now Frollo! 0:04
caroline XD
OH
🤣
So far I am amazed how you have the ability to make something look like it was animated in 3D, but in reality it was in the 2D style.
Now I understand why some people call you the best animator.
He says in the description that the background is actually 3D animated. But you are right, he does make 2D things look 3D.
@@Star-mb2rs the way the camera flies around Quasimodo though
Mind bending
Um, did you forgot about Richard Williams?
@@TVgoodies Never heard about him.
Favorite animated film! Just watched this the other day and this scene still blows my mind!!!
Show: ok we need someone to animate this, 3d is a no no
person: JaMeS BaXtER
ah oh They did use 3d for the building read the description
The background is in 3D.

@@pinatatomata2221 Animating characters in 3D wasn't as easy as animating backgrounds
James Baxter did a talk at my school just the other week, and he joked that Brad Bird has never forgiven him for not being able to animate on Iron Giant, so this could be accurate 😂
James, I need to know how you keep your shapes and models so perfectly consistent and 3D, this stuff is just gorgeous! Any tips or strategies on how you did it?
The background is cgi in this one but yea!
NO WAY ITS JAMES BAXTER
Someone: Nice CGI
James: CGI?
Dude, he literally says in the description the background *was* CGI. I get most people on this channel prefer traditional animation and have a distaste for how CGI is used now, but people really don't seem to understand CGI has been in Disney movies for a long time....
Whatever, it's Just a comment i did to be funny
0:03-0:06 No he can't Gary, no he can't : ). Wonderful job to Mr. Baxter, I really wish you got more of a spotlight as part of the Disney Renaissance top animators.
Definitely one of the most powerful scenes in an animated film. Period.
Absolute legend. How do you make it look so 3D and flawless?
The background was cgi, and he animated over it
@@FlashQuatsch Ah, I thought so. Thanks.
I tried to listen to Mr. Trousdale's yelling. I must be going deaf! 😂
Edit: after the fifth time, I found it. You got me there.
The 3d generated backgrounds and pencil work very well together. Thanks for uploading this great piece of work
It's hybrid right? He hand drew the characters and their rotation, but the building is a 3d object drawn over?
@@takemetoyonk exactly, James clarified that on the description box
Why was I expecting he'd throw her down
Oh, look - the absolute legend dropped one of his masterpieces again. ❤️
Are you gonna release the shots you did for Mary Poppins Returns anytime soon?
Sadly, I don't have access to any of that stuff. The deadlines were pretty tight so I didn't have time to test much of anything myself. I just animated it and sent in the drawings, then they scanned them and did tests at Ken Duncan's studio.
Dude how
Because he’s worked on numerous Disney films lol
This is the one I’ve been waiting for! Right before I start my animation course too- you’re animation always makes my heart melt and whenever I feel unmotivated, one second of your work can spark me up again~ you’re an animation god
I love the way you animate these kind of stuff like you are so freaking talented I can't put it in words
Oh yes, our god has uploaded! :D
Jeez, I forgot how godfamn talented you are XD
Absolutely incredible shot. The amount of skill needed to achieve these kinds of pans are unreal. The fact that James animated this while in his fucking 20s blows me away.
I still remember how fluid this scene was in the movie! Still amazed
And this man animated a scene on Steven Universe
You are the visionary behind one of the most impactful, awe-inspiring, and powerful scenes to have come of any animated film. Thank you for all you’ve done for the art of animation.
beautiful and mesmerizing! all your work let us speechless
Aaah you can't get her now Frollo
Welp, at least the sanctuary is now closed due to a devastating fire, Quasi is now evacuated and out there, looking for a temporary home
Como me entusiasman sus animaciones 😍
Hey James! I wanted to ask, but for specific scenes like these, how much of your process is done just by eyeballing the positioning and scaling, and how much shift-n-trace do you use? Ive recently been attempting to animate 2d characters on top of a 3d camera pan and I always have trouble with keeping my volumes consistent as the camera rotates or moves towards and away from the character. What are your thoughts when approaching a scene like this?
Even on paper, I almost mistook this for CGI...
THE GOD HAS UPLOADED
James Baxter is the James Bestest.
This animation test is from October 1995
, before the film’s 06/21/1996 release
How
Literally everyone who sees really smooth animation: this must be the work of an disney stand
christ.. the amount of work put into animating something 3D on PAPER of all things is terrifying
This scene gives me chills every time! It´s so powerful and it's mostly because of your incredible animation. You are amazing, sir :)
THE BACKGROUND WAS ANIMATED ON PAPER!?
DUDE YOU ARE INSANE
The background is in 3d

the movement of the 3d environment is incredible
This is amazing, gives me the inspiration to keep learning animation related stuff.
This man literally animates in 60 fraps!!!
Why is your animation the best I mean seriously you’re one of the masters in movement
Please make tutorials. I am looking to become someone as good as an animator as you (even tho that’s impossible) but please make tutorials. Bye
Even after learning that James Baxter didn't animate the background himself, this is my favorite piece of animation from James Baxter.
I mean, this is top tier, god-like content right here. Absolute legend, one and only, James Baxter.
Back when I thought this one was made CGI.
your animation is very inspirational
Oh, so that’s how they match the characters with the 3d environment.
