    Fun fact, Isaac:
Frollo has the most screentime out of any Disney Villain. He was shown for roughly a third of the movie's 91 minute runtime.

Most Disney villains fall into this system
      They either:
Show up after the first act sparingly(Ursula)
Are in the first act but are relegated till the end(scar)
Exist for 12 minutes at the end(all bad twist villains)
Have plenty of screen time spread evenly(frollo and Hades)

Fun Fact: Gargoyles spiritual meaning is scaring evil.
Quasimodo was friends with them, meaning he was good
But Frollo being scared of them, meant he was full of sin
And he found that out when the Gargoyle roared.
He found out he was sinful

I think it is also worth mentioning the complexity of the song Hellfire. This is a lot of history steeped in this film. During the song the red and hooded monks are singing words in Latin that are often pulled from the medieval Catholic Masses, and they directly contradict everything Frollo is telling himself. For example, when he says "It's not my fault" the monks sing "Mea culpa", which is translated as "My fault". Here are is the full Latin translation: I confess to God almighty, to the blessed Mary ever virgin, to the blessed archangel Michael, to the holy apostles, to all the saints, that I have sinned. In thought, in word and deed. My fault, my fault, my most grievous fault, Lord have mercy.

It follows the pattern from the beginning of the movie, where the arch Decan shows up as the physical, verbal representation his guilty conscious in the face of accidently killing the mother. One side justifying his act, the other side reminding him that God, the eyes of Notre dame saw what he did and what he needs to do to make up for it.
Of course we know how reluctantly agreed to taking him in, only because he hoped someday quasi would be "of use to him".

Quasimodo and Frollo's relationship reminds me so much of Rapunzel and Mother Gothel's in Tangled. I wish I'd given this movie a chance before I watched Tangled, but the only time I've actually watched the full one was about two months ago. I loved it, especially the confrontation scene between Quasi and Frollo. Again, reminds me of Rapunzel standing up to Mother Gothel in the last part of the film.

I saw that parallel when I watched Tangled and when Rapunzel called out Mother Gothel's sham excuses for locking her in the tower. It was basically calling her out on "You locked me to protect me from the world when I should have been protected from you!" When Rapunzel said that, i thought "that's awfully familiar" to Quasimodo calling out Frollo that the world is only a dark and evil place because of people like Frollo.

I am currently in the musical version of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and in that version of the story, Frollo has a brother named Jehan. The two were orphaned and taken in by the priests at Notre Dame. Frollo trained to be a dedicated priest himself, but Jehan was frustrated by the restrictive environment of the cathedral and began acting out (drinking, going to brothels, etc.) in defiance. Frollo often lied to the priests to keep Jehan out of trouble. One day, Jehan brought a gypsy girl named Florika to the cathedral as a "present" for Frollo's birthday. This was too much for Frollo, who finally betrayed his brother. I don't think he would have done so had he known that Jehan would be banished from Notre Dame. Years later he got a message from Jehan and found him dying from smallpox; Florika having succumbed a few weeks earlier and leaving behind their child. Frollo adopts the baby after Jehan dies, naming him Quasimodo.
Whew that was long. If you're still reading this congrats to you

Would he have read it? Books were scarce in a age before printing and owning your own Bible would've been rare as scripture was revered and wouldn't have been in common hands but remain the property of the church. In the scene Hellfire, assuming the room he is singing in is part of his own private appartments in the palace of justice do you notice any bookshelves in his drawing room? No. Also the Bible in the western church would've been written in Latin and in mass would've been recited in Latin. Frollo being a judge must have been well educated and would've been able to comprehend spoken Latin as well as being able to read and write in Latin but the epistles of Paul are cited in short and often lost as the service continues. I struggle to remember old testament readings and new testament readings and vaguely remember the Gospel reading and always forget the sermon. Frollo is a judge and the downside of being a judge is you have to break the command of Jesus 'judge not lest ye be judged'. If you do that profession for long enough and encounter only criminals your colour of humanity changes and you see people as potential criminals and mix that with religious beliefs, sinners as well. And if your on a podium of arbitration (a position a person of good repute in character and conduct can occupy) you stand above others and that changes your perception of yourself eg. 'I have never had to step down so that means I must exceptionally good and exemplary in my character and conduct'. His religious fanaticism is part to blame for his character flaw but his profession I believe has soured his view of humanity and religion.

He also didn't read the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The pharisee basked in his perceived self-righteousness and bragged about how he is superior to everyone else because of it, just like Frollo does. The tax collector however, recognized the fact he is a sinner and he asked God to have pity on him in humbleness. At the end of the parable Jesus says "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Frollo is just like the Pharisee, blinded by pride and a false sense of superiority, who refuses to recognize he is a sinner too.

Idk if you picked up on this but the Red Hooded figures are representations of the Catholic Inquisition set in a tribunal. Claude Frollo wasn't as obsessed with the fact that he "felt" sinful, so much as he was obsessed that he would LOOK sinful to others and be punished for it. Frollo was rightfully terrified of the Inquisition considering the torture they frequently inflicted on those deemed sinful. The inclusion of, and primary focus of, the Inquisition in his demented nightmares during the song "Hellfire" shows us that even though Frollo was indeed tormented by "temptation" he was more afraid of what people would think of him if they knew he faced temptation - as is often the case with the self-righteous, their image is more important than their reality.

It also makes sense that Esmeralda chose Phoebus as her love in the end. He was the only one to treat her as an actual human being. Frollo denounced her as a witch/devil and Quasimodo held her up as an angel. Not that Quasimodo wasn’t a good friend as a result but Phoebus saw her as the person she was. I know there’s a more tragic side to the relationship in the book but this was suitable for Disney!

*I love Frollo* 💜 He's the best Disney villain. And The Hunchback is one of the most unjustly underrated Disney movies ever, and my all time favorite. It's weird how as a kid, I didn't see Frollo like I see him now... I just knew that he was the villain, that's all, I couldn't understand nor even see his true intentions. But now that I'm an adult and I do, I love how psychopathic, cruel, insane, sadistic, lustful and just plain evil he is. *The best* . And I have to say, I far prefer Disney's version of Frollo over Hugo's.

Frollo is definitely the darkest villain in Disney, but he's also my favorite 'cause of said darkness. He's clearly not right in the head and yet people don't have a choice but to obey him, except for the priest. In the resent musical by Disney of this Movie a bit more was given to Frollo's reasoning. The root for his hate of the Gypsy's in the show wasn't driven by religion alone. As a student his brother and only remaining family gave into lustful desires for a gypsy woman and it led to the brothers being forced apart and after years Frollo only saw his brother again on the death bed. Granted in the play Quasi is his nephew threw the brother and the gyspy woman and the movie gives another way he ended up with him. none the less part of this still could have happend in some form. he sees Gypsys as the ones that took his remaining family away and indirectly responsible for his death. therefore hes driven by vengeance as well as fear feeling those desires that in his eyes destroyed his brothers life and soul.

He has no master plan or ingenious inventions or dragons. He doesn't want some higher power or eternal life. Frollo is a regular person. He is twisted by his pride; he knows he is sinful and wrong, but his pride blinds him. It is this pride that he clings to, to hide from his failings. He both knows he is wrong, yet believes, honestly to his core, that he is just and right.
His death brings us no joy, we don't celebrate his demise. This is because we aren't made to hate him, but to understand him. He is no super evil genius bent on destroying the world, no vengeful bad guy. Frollo is a normal human being. He is just a man blinded by vice. And we very well could become just like him.

I think the darkest DISNEY villain is indeed Claude Frollo simply because he embodies what make people evil in the real world. He is self righteous, murderous, lust driven, corrupt, cruel, manipulative, xenophobic, abusive, heartless, destructive, deceitful, etc. Usually you can find something comical about a Disney villain or can find someway to sympathize or even relate to them but, that's not the case for Frollo in Disney. There isn't one scene he makes you laugh, there isn't one scene you feel sorry for him, there isn't one moment you can relate to him. He is dark from beginning to end. They were right to title his song hellfire because this villain is truly a tormented soul.

Years before he was (still is) my favorite villain. But lately, after reading the book Notre Dame, I feel bad for him. Brought up in a loveless family, a brilliant mind, studied all sciences at a very young age, adopted baby Quasimodo when everyone wanted to kill him, cared for his brother, utterly devoted to the church... His only mistake was falling in love with Esmeralda. In a moment of reflection he thinks how would he be if he was a normal man, having a normal life and relations with the others.😢

Frollo will always be the most underrated but scariest disney villain, in the origin stories he actually tries to rape esmarelda and as we see throughout the movie, he wants to. Like we see in the church scenes where he grabs her, sniffs her hair, and shows his sexual violence, unlike other Disney villians, people like frollo *really exist* which is what makes him so scary. Him blaming Esmeralda for his sexual attraction, calling her a siren in the song hellfire, ect, sounds an awful lot like the famous "she was asking for it"

If you really think about it, rather than a “villain”, I believe that like all of us, Frollo fell victim to his sinnings. He makes it clear that he wants god to forgive and have mercy on him. He unlike other Disney villains, Frollo was misunderstood and that ultimately lead to his insanity. It’s fairly normal that humans may do sinful things, so judging Frollo is like judging ourselves.

I feel like, in Hellfire, he was praying and talking to Mary, waiting for an answer, of how he could fall in love, with a girl, of an ethnicity he wanted to end up. Also, he is praying to her, asking for her honor, of that day, he almost drowned Quasimodo (as you can see, the Virgin stares at him, carrying Jesus in her arm. In my personal opinion, he is the best Disney villain, I have a lot of empathy on him in a good way, but this is more, from Frollo, of the novel.

Something you missed was the chanting in hellfire. Based on gregorian chants and then using actual Latin I’d like to elaborate for everyone the blatant duality in this. The archdeacon is leading everyone in a mass prayer called Confiteor or I Confess. Now let’s just go through the first big chunk of chant that’s sung in Latin. It translates out to I confess to god almighty, to blessed Mary ever virgin, to the blessed archangel Michael, to the holy apostles and to all the saints.
Et tibet pater- and to you father
Quia peccari nimis- that I have sinned
    Cogitatione- in thought
Verbo et opere- and in my words and in what I’ve done
    Mea culpa-my fault
Mea maxima culpa-through my most grievous fault
These people are in a prayer procession willing and ready to admit their sin, admit they’re wrongdoings and pray for forgiveness. They acknowledge their sin and faults. Yet while frollo is denying any fault of his own the hooded figures are chanting saying it is his fault his most grievous fault. The duality of confession and denying. Good Christian and bad Christian. Just thought I’d point that out. Awesome video though

Even better - in the Catholic Mass, this prayer is said at the beginning as the priest leads us to "call to mind our sins".
The rest of the prayer goes: "And I ask Mary Ever Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you - my brothers and sisters - to pray for me to the Lord our God."
The first part of the prayer (which is in the song) is us admitting that we have sinned; the second part of the prayer (which is not in the song) is us essentially asking for help from Mary, the angels and saints, and the Christian community.
Why would they not include that bit in the song? *Because Frollo doesn't think he's in the wrong, and even if he were, he doesn't need the prayers of the "common, vulgar, weak licentious crowd"*

G*psy is technically a slur used for the Romani, a group of people that has been marginalized and mistreated even to this day. The Romani were a nomadic group not because they wanted to, but because they were forced to. Also the reason why they were called *G slur* was because people in Europe thought they were from Egypt when in actuality they were from Northern India. They are a group that faces racism, stereotypes and were victims of mass genocide. They are people just like us and deserve to live good and happy lives.

Frollo might have considered himself a true Christian but he wasn't because he never belived the one thing every true Christian knows. God loves and forgives anyone. You can't truly be a person who follows God and Jesus if you don't show kindness to all his children. Frollo believed only certain people were allowed to have God's love and forgiveness but he was wrong. What I found most interesting is that Esmeralda a gypsy, a person he considered evil, was more of a true Christian than he ever was.

I agree, Catholics confess that Jesus is Lord.
However, their theology is very flawed in certain areas.
For instance, they pray to saints, which take the place of God, thus committing idolatry.
They also believe in Purgatory, a place where certain sinners are cleansed of their sins before they can enter Heaven, which diminishes the power of Jesus' blood by saying that something else must be added to Jesus' blood to gain salvation.

I have a theory on another movie: the hunchback of notre dame. I noticed that judge claude frollo is pale and long, while his eyes are on fire. This is reminiscent of someone who has sold his soul to the devil. I think that he might have sold his soul to gain his power. In watchmojo's video of top ten villain deaths, they said he had no soul to save. What if he sold his soul, and is trying to get a new one so he can keep his power, and keep A soul.
