We need this type of traditional hand-drawn animation (and I do mean hand-drawn) back in the mainstream. I am not knocking the newer techniques, by the way. I just mean that this should be able to co-exist with the newer styles of animation.
No, see, that's the thing. 3d animation is much cheaper in production, easier in workfliw management and less reliant on individual artistic merit of the animatiors. That really is the entire reason why commercial animation has gone almost entirely 3d. Which is a shame, because I doubt it can ever be quite as disarmingly charming as this.
maybe her 'blind date' was just someone who she imagined. he never showed up, so she thought of him as a slob that was too drunk to even meet up with her
That’s interesting. There also may be some evidence that may be true. I’m gonna list the possible evidence. 1. Colorless-The man has no natural skin color. As we see in this animation, everyone else has a skin color. Also, his walls and floor are are white/grey/black. 2. Beers- There is no way that the man has not killed himself drinking all those beers in one go. He would’ve died of alcohol poisoning that moment or WAY before. It depends on how long he’s been drinking. 3. Train- When the train hits the guy, the train keeps going, almost like nothing was hit in the first place. If a REAL person got hit, I bet they would have stopped at least. 4. Noises- The guy doesn’t have a proper voice. He makes small sounds, but he doesn’t say a single word during this entire animation. Everyone else has a voice, NOT including the office workers and train passengers. 5. Injuries- There is a scene where he hits the concrete ground hard and leaves a human-shaped hole but doesn’t seem hurt at first, just really drunk. Also, when he falls down those stairs and lands, he falls asleep almost like he wasn’t hurt at all. But with supporting evidence, there is arguing evidence. 1. Email- During the office scene, she did receive an email from someone. It could have been someone else, but she said it was from “him”. She was clearly talking to someone at least. 2. Train- The train did say “Out of Service” but I don’t know what that means for trains. Maybe, that there is no driver and it’s a runaway. But, I don’t know. 3. Emotions- It looks like that when she talking about this man, she’s genuinely happy about it and when he doesn’t arrive, she seems very mad. It doesn’t seem like she’s faking her emotions to make him seem real. Tell me if I missed anything and I’ll add it. List your evidence as arguing or supporting so I know.
OMG! The scene at the subway, when he falls down the stairs? How in the world can anyone draw and then animate that amazingly well? Superb. A masterpiece in animation and writing. And _exactly_ what i needed today. 👍🏼🙂
God this truly is what dating in your late 20s is like. Everyone’s already married, the only single guys look and act like…that…it’s a mess. Except no happy ending with a handsome English bartender 😮💨 Last night I was invited out for dinner and as I was putting on my makeup I paused and thought, why am I even bothering? Sure enough, the guy showed up in a raggedy t shirt and shorts, like what you would wear around the house for comfort. He even said he always sees high class women with these raggedy dudes, and that I’m too cosmopolitan for people in this city. 🤦🏽♀️ Idk what I’m supposed to do with that information.
Stay single, that’s what you have to do. Most of these dudes are in love with their screens, would rather choose rubber dolls or anime robot girls over the real thing. We’re just “meat puppets with holes” to them.
This animation is absolutely breathtaking. The story-telling is spot on with a wide mix of emotion. The ending is adorable. I am in love with this short.
Woah this opened my eyes to the fact that we ALWAYS take things personally like when a date doesn't show up, we assume it's our fault, but sometimes people have so many damn issues with themselves that like the blind date, their priorities are somewhere else. It was never her fault.
Dennis Taylor 🙋♀️ I used to, every time I didn’t want to actually meet the guy -which was every time-, made the whole experience much more enjoyable. Good thing we’re in lockdown so I’m forced to be alone.
Lightning McQueen I want to meet someone, and I’m generally optimistic, I give everyone a chance and try to be the best version of myself but every date is just wrong. Cest la vie. The people you’re attracted to don’t like you back, and give versa. But tbh I ruined a lot of relationships by pushing people away so I feel like I wasted my luck earlier in life, so now I have some purgatory to live through. But yea.. a long winded way of saying: just because I don’t want to do something in the moment doesn’t mean I’m going to cancel, and spend my whole life at home, you’ve got to at least try. And if it takes some liquid courage to put on a smile then so be it.

The Richard Williams influence is EVERYWHERE in this film, probably why the animation is so amazing. Homages to The Thief and the Cobbler abound. It's proof that all the computer technology in the world cannot duplicate the beauty of what the human hand can do. I cling to animating on paper with my trusty 3B pencil and refuse to give it up.
I love the 90s aesthetic and color of this short, along with the traditional animation and art style, something that you don't often see in most media nowadays.
Damn, that bartenders voice. Awroo~ 🥰 I wish we could go back to traditional animation like this, I miss it so much. The art style for most modern cartoons is sometimes dull and overused. ❤️
It's no use wanting to look forward to a relationship in which you don't even know the person well. You barely know the person, and time passes, the clock ticks, and you get anxious. Waiting, waiting, and where is this person? Where is he when I need him most? And when you realize it, you're nervous about something you've put yourself into, and when you relax and realize there are other things around you, there's life more interesting than that. It's not always meant to be, but sometimes, some things are just meant to exist.
This was just 100% brilliant. I love the build up to finally hearing the bartender speak, the characters, the designs, THE SOLID GOLD SMOOTH ANIMATION OMFG! I want to see more from this guy!!!!
Let me say that this 20 minute animation is better than half of the animated films that come out this year. What really makes this work is that despite the predictable story, the lovely voices, graceful movements, and majestic score make this a true beauty.
I feel like that guy’s trip through the Underground is a perfect representation of what it’s like to take the Tube on your own for the first time lol. I remember the first time I had to do it as a kid I was about 9 years old and going from one place I didn’t know well to another place I’d never been...and I got so lost lol. It literally felt like a maze!
I just want to take this moment and talk about the message and art style of this beautifully done animation. I want to congratulate all the people who worked on this, animators, voice actors and artists....you all have done such a wonderful and beautiful job on this, I love how smooth, crisp and detailed it is. message of this: don't expect the dream of what you only heard, accept the reality of someone who is there for you now.
The art style really reminds me of old animated films like the The Thief and the Cobbler. especially with the seen with the guy falling down the stairs. Great job!
The transitions from one scene to another, so clever. And I laughed at how he tries to leave the house and just flings out the window XD The train scene kind of reminded me of the style of Courage the Cowardly Dog with the way his mouth stretches. Wonderful animation. It's kind of a sad story, but also hilarious and sweet. This is my second time watching it ;) I'll probably return again. It's just so good.
Well if you look the animator up, he did work on ‘Thief and the Cobbler’ with the creator. I thought the exact same thing, hence why I looked it up after watching this. He also helped animate ‘Who Framed Rodger Rabbit’ :)
The style, fluidity of animation and backgrounds (especially the subway scenery.) Initially made me think that this was inspired by Richard Williams work... And then I found out that Mark and Roy Nasibitt worked on this! They did the same work in Thief and the Cobbler and other films! Brilliant! I absolutely Loved this... I wish films of this caliber were still being made. Animation today isn't half of the quality it used to be...
I thought I was the only one to notice this!!! I even looked up the film to see if anyone from that worked on this. That subway checker-floor scene was very reminiscent of the Thief and the Cobbler. And the drunkard seemed like a version of the thief too!
@@kurlykayla9013 I was thinking he looked and acted a lot more like the thief in gesture and in nature! Tak’s really resourceful and gentle vs the Thief who is very grubby and slobbish. It’s really fantastic that people made the link with the animation to discover the animator worked on that film. The secrets he prolly knows. I wish they’d make a documentary about it!
this guy... is amazing. He is literally the most beautiful human specimen I have ever seen. Did you know people could be so much like an insect? And his acrobatics...
See, people. THAT right there is REAL, TRADITIONAL animation. Instead of just making it a flash or a cardboard cutout, they actually went for a PERFECT form of movement. Sorta like animation from the 90's, & sort of an old school Disney cel animation. I'm just like "Wow! It's been a LONG damn time since I've seen brilliant animation like this & that was from Disney's Princess & The Frog & that was like 5 years ago back in 2010! Since then every animation is either Flash or CGI, which to me today is just BORING." THIS animated short is NOT boring. It's just SPECTACULAR traditional animation at it's finest, & seeing as this is either a British or France made film, that is amazing. Whoever was involved in this with the animation of this deserves an friggin' Oscar. Bloody well done!
Ireland has made good animation with the Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolf walkers coming up. And Japan made awesome animation with Spirited Away, and Mary and the Witch's Flower. Even Don Bluth is a good animator. And with any luck, with his idea of opening a new studio, 2D animation will finally come back to the world after so many years. We can only wait and hope.
Man! What a film! I got INTENSE The Thief and The Cobbler vibes! ESPECIALLY with the train station scene and all of the checkered floors swirling around the screen!
OH MY STARS! This is wonderfully animated, especially how smooth everything is! The way her hair moves when she puts her hand through it, their heads swishing from side to side, it’s all just so cool!

I love this simply because the two guys where both on the bigger side which makes this NOT about weight , but about showing respect to others, self respect and being ready for someone. We need this type of traditional hand-drawn animation (and I do mean hand-drawn) back in the mainstream. I am not knocking the newer techniques, by the way. I just mean that this should be able to co-exist with the newer styles of animation.
Ohhh yeah I agree
I agree. There’s just something so good about hand drawn animation ❤
It takes years and lots of money
@@Silencer796 So does 3D animation, yet the industry is saturated with it
No, see, that's the thing. 3d animation is much cheaper in production, easier in workfliw management and less reliant on individual artistic merit of the animatiors. That really is the entire reason why commercial animation has gone almost entirely 3d. Which is a shame, because I doubt it can ever be quite as disarmingly charming as this.

We all knew
We all knew
A
maybe her 'blind date' was just someone who she imagined. he never showed up, so she thought of him as a slob that was too drunk to even meet up with her
This makes so much sense
That is a very interesting thought, i like that idea
he doesnt have color too😳
That’s interesting.
Or rather, the man is real, but he stood her up and she's imagining him as a tardy alcoholic slob so she can cope with being stood up
We have an idiom in India that goes like, "Whatever happens, happens for the better." This short film conveys a similar message like that.
They could do an entire series on the misadventures of the drunk and I'd watch the crap out of that! All 3 of the characters were great, I loved this!

God this truly is what dating in your late 20s is like. Everyone’s already married, the only single guys look and act like…that…it’s a mess. Except no happy ending with a handsome English bartender 😮💨
Last night I was invited out for dinner and as I was putting on my makeup I paused and thought, why am I even bothering? Sure enough, the guy showed up in a raggedy t shirt and shorts, like what you would wear around the house for comfort. He even said he always sees high class women with these raggedy dudes, and that I’m too cosmopolitan for people in this city. 🤦🏽♀️ Idk what I’m supposed to do with that information.
Stay single, that’s what you have to do. Most of these dudes are in love with their screens, would rather choose rubber dolls or anime robot girls over the real thing. We’re just “meat puppets with holes” to them.

Some of the animators who worked on the thief and the cobbler also did this.

This animation style seems to have been inspired by “The Thief and The Cobbler”...I love it!
