      Thank you!! It should if it says Open acrylics Gel because it will have an additive to keep open longer. Regular Acrylic Gel Mediums dry about the same time as acrylic paints do, but “Open” will stay active longer!

    Hope you had a lovely Christmas karim. Super set up and I enjoy the close up shots too. I'll try out that medium technique, loved how the paint went on so smoothly when u did the sky. Good tip about muted colours to make other layers pop, that will now be my forever go to.. Hope you and your family are doing ok and staying safe.. We are in full lockdown here in the UK. It never seems to end. 🥰

      Thank you very much Julie!! Now is the time to invest in yourself and immerse yourself into your painting, but sadly it’s during a lockdown! Still, make it a positive moment, things are crazy here in the U.S., so I dry home and paint and do videos for you guys, but I still have to work at my hospital job! Do the best you can with what you have !!

    Thanks for another very informative video. Do you think pre-mixing the retarder and gel with a larger amount of paint and keeping it in a jar would work? You would then have a form of open acrylics at a lower cost ?

      I’m not sure about the first part of you question because I haven’t tried it yet, but it’ll be interesting to do so for a test! On the second part of your question, you’re correct, you can turn any paint you have into a Golden Open like acrylic! You can play with the mixture to suit your painting style!!!

      I know it sounds a little complicated, but it’s not that bad. You can blend a retarder and a flow improver medium together and you be able to spread the paint further and have more time to blend before the paint dries! You can also buy a retarder medium and mix it with and an acrylic gel medium ( Michael’s carry both) to get the thickness and feel of oil paints. So it depends what you’re trying to achieve: flow and blending time, use the first mix. If you want an oil like feel and have time to blend, then use the second mixture! Hope that helped. Let me know!

    I still can't make out when to use the 1-1 mix, the 1-8 mix or the 70-30 mix.

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  10 місяців тому

      The 1:1 mix and the 70-30 mix is for oils!
      So basically, if I want the paint to dry a little faster I’ll use more odorless mineral spirit (70%) than linseed oil (30%), if drying time is not an issue, you can mix a 1:1 mix. The reason you add the linseed oil is to give the paint more fat. Oil paints have linseed (fat) in them already, some brands have less than others. But I’m acrylics that’s not an issue, it’s not a rule, unlike oils! The mix in this acrylic video in particular I was just showing you that you can make a mix to give you a longer extended time to work your paint since acrylics dry quickly. You don’t even need a medium with acrylics once you learn how to control the water on your brush! Water is the medium, and it’s all I use, except for this tutorial.

      You can use Flo aid, just don’t use to much other you’ll weaken the resin binder, that’s why I added Gel medium! It has a polymer binder, so the two work together in tandem, and helps thicken the paint a little!

    Your undoubted skill in using water as your sole medium is all very well for you aces and masters of the acrylic. But we struggling newbies, in our ignorance, reach out for any help that might be available ! In my case, i only want to know the best mix proportion between gel medium and retarder, as an aid to slowing down acrylic drying time and thus enabling more successful blending. I've gone nowhere near oils, and don't plan to until, and if, I make good progress with acrylic.PS, i do appreciate your taking the time to answer our queries

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  10 місяців тому +1

      For an acrylic mix you can make 1 part retarder to 2 parts gel medium! And if you feel it’s not staying wet long enough, then go to a 1:1 mixture. Eventually as you progress in your acrylic endeavor you’ll feel less of a need to use a medium because you’ll paint faster and you’ll want the paint to dry faster. Otherwise, your other choice would be to buy Golden Open acrylics. But try that mix first and let me know how it’s working for you!

    Hi Karim! I have a quick question. I wonder if using Golden airbrush flow medium with the gel would even extend drying time even more? I live in Arizona where it gets extremely dry almost all year, so anything that can help to extend drying time for my acrylics is always helpful. Thanks.

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  3 роки тому

      In that case, just use a slow dry medium and no gel! Just be careful how much you put in the paint, you only need a little! I would do a test sample by putting a dime worth of paint on parchment paper( or baking sheet) and add a little slow dry medium to the paint, doesn’t matter which brand, and see how long does it take to dry! Otherwise buy some Golden Open acrylics.

    During the summer, I absolutely have to use mediums. Sometimes I use Golden retarder but mostly I use Golden glazing liquid, which also slows down the drying time. As far as I know, it’s only Golden’s brand of glazing liquid that does that. I haven’t pre-mixed them like that but will give it a try.
    Thanks for the tip.

    Can we use the golden retarder alone?
    How long it stays wet? Does it become tacky? Can I mix it with liquitex matte gel?
    Sorry many Qs. Pls help.

    • @GebahiArtworks
      @GebahiArtworks  3 роки тому +1

      Hello Mohammed, you can use the retarder alone but in small quantities otherwise it’ll never dry! Depends how long it stay wet on how much you apply, so have to experiment, and it becomes tacky during the late stage of drying, so at that point I would wait until it’s dry to add another layer otherwise you’ll lift the bottom layer! You can mix Golden Retarder with Liquitex Matte Gel! Let me know if this helped.
