- How to paint a Sunset over the ocean for beginners and intermediate painters.
In this acrylic painting tutorial ocean sunset video. I will teach you how to paint a sunset with acrylics step by step.
The scene for the ocean sunset painting could be a view from a boat or a beautiful sunset beach. It makes a lovely scene and an easy acrylic painting tutorial sunset beach video that is easy to teach and hopefully easy to recreate your own ocean sunset painting at home.
Hopefully the video will cover how to paint sunset clouds, how to paint ocean waves with acrylic paint in a super easy way using a flat headed brush. How to paint a sunset beach or how to paint a beach sunset.
You can use canvas or paper for the acrylic painting tutorial sunset ocean but please have a hairdryer handy to dry your work in places. Acrylics dry very fast, but the hairdryer allows you to quickly dry your work in order to not make a mistake.
By taking your time with each stage you will learn how to improve your realism but also how to paint a sunset acrylic painting.
Please enjoy, and please be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments below :)

Any questions please put them in the comments below. Please comment and like the video as it really helps other artists get to see it here on UA-cam. Don’t forget if you paint your own version of the painting to tag and dm me @mstewartpaintings on instagram. Thank you.
Loved this tutorial and the transparency! I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets frustrated haha alot of artists leave out that part although painting is therapeutic it also comes with frustration 😂
@@tenisiadams ha ha ha, yeah. I try to leave lots of mistakes in the tutorials to show everyone. No ones perfect. But there’s nothing you can’t just paint over.
Hi in your list of materials your acrylics are all Pebeo brand but there are about three different types Which type do you mostly use? What ones have you used for this video?
@@paulwhiting1648 they are called Pebeo Decocreme. They are a branch off of the main colours. Have premixed colours and shades.
Thanks for the tutorial!! But What messed me up is at 5:11 when you say add some crimson to the orange but You are clearly adding purple of some sort. Am I wrong? This is the first step for the ocean
i try'd everything u did and watched for hours but it ended up as my worst painting yet. no offence, just asking for advice.
Hey Rinse. This was one of my earlier tutorials. Where the playback speed is a bit fast. Maybe watch one of the latest tutorials that are a lot longer in length. As they are painted at real time. They may be a bit easier to follow along at home. You can always Dm @mstewartpaintings on instagram and I can take a look to see if the painting can be improved.
i saw your comment and didn’t think much of it but now that i have tried it too, i regret not listening cause same 😭
Skill issue
Just keep practicing
Remember that all these folks spent years perfecting thier craft.... this not something one can master in one day.....so just keep practicing and eventually it will click...
WOW!!!! I am in awe of your talented art!!!❤❤❤❤❤ you are an excellent teacher!! You make me feel like I can do this! Your art is SO realistic!!! It's incredible & quite stunning!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you 😊 that’s made my day. I’m glad the tutorials are easy to follow along 👍🏼
Your tutorials are great for beginners! I appreciate how detailed you are in explaining! You art is also gorgeous. Thank you for taking your time to explain everything!
You are very welcome. I am glad the tutorials help.
I absolutely love the way you teach . I’m going to paint one if I fail I’ll just do another one and another one .. thank you for the video .
Omg! This is gorgeous!! I feel like I’m enjoying this sunset at the beach… amazing ☺️💙
Thank you 😊
I’m a total noob with a half finished sunset because of the lighting issue on the water lol.
Some things come easy, then I hit a brick wall on something. I’m learning to just try things and learn from mistakes and also working through mistakes.
That’s great that you’re trying to overcome mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up. I have painted hundreds of paintings that go wrong. Even these tutorials that you don’t see here on UA-cam. As you say. The secret 🔑 is learning what you did wrong and then problem solving to figure it out and go again better. One of my favorite ever quotes is this. “Every Master was once a Disaster!”. 😂
Very informative. Your discussion about dark edges to bring focus in was a great professional tip.
Thanks for showing color mixing and disussion of stepping colors from warm to cool.
Your style of teaching will us to success.
Thanks for taking the time to teach us.
You are making the world a more beautiful place!
Bless you. Thanks very much. I started making the tutorials when everyone was locked down in covid a year or so back. As I thought it would help cheer people up stuck at home. Now i really enjoy making them. Just goes to show. If you do things for others and have good intentions it always comes back. Take care.
Beautiful and so helpful! I have a question, why do you start with a colored canvas?
Thanks for the tutorial!! But What messed me up is at 5:11 when you say add some crimson to the orange but You are clearly adding purple of some sort. Am I wrong? This is the first step for the ocean
It’s orange. Then I say you add some crimson. Crimson is a dark red like purple. If you imagine orange, crimson are hot 🥵 colours. So for sunlight 🌅. Where as purple and blue are cool 🥶 colours. So around the sun 🌞 we want warm colours such as orange then crimson. Then as it gets further from the heat a light of the sun we add cooler tones.
You are SO AMAZING! LOVE IT!
ROBERT
I suggest painters tape it will not peal paint off when removing.
Yes painters tape is what I use in ever tutorial. But sometimes I get over excited and the acrylics are not quite dry when I remove it.
At ten minutes it works as a semi abstract painting, in my experience if the underpainting works well the finished piece can't really go wrong especially if you know what you're doing like you do, thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge, much appreciated 👍
Great to hear. Thanks for the positive feedback 👍
Well done Sir! I was wondering about the clouds and you explained them and eveything else perfectly. Very clear and so very beautiful! Thank you, thank you!
Superb video! I’m new to painting and Can’t wait to try it. One question, I noticed your canvas is dark in color. My is white. Would that change the outcome or you recommend painting it darker first?
Hi Talita. I am glad you found the tutorial so helpful. I have lots more more for beginners if your looking to learn. The reason I paint my canvas raw/burnt sienna. Is so I can see where I need to thicken the paint or rework areas more. As acrylics are water based. Sometimes they can be watery and thin. By having a dark colour underneath. I can see it shine through. But you don’t have to paint your canvas. If you find painting on white easier. Then by all means do that. Happy painting 👍
Just found you and subscribed. Bot of a newbie here. I will be watching this a few times, order up the paint and give it bash.. thanks
I really love your enthusiasm. Your smile always makes me laugh too. Your video's makes me happy 😊
May I ask which purple you used please? It's particular
It is a colour called Iris Purple. You can buy by a comany called Pebeo Decocreme. You can make it with purple, cobalt blue and a little white.
Prussian sounds like pruh -shion
Cerulean the c says 's' because of the e.
Ha ha ha. Thank you. I have been corrected by others already. So now on my latest tutorials the pronunciation is correct. Hopefully 😂
This is amazing!
Do you have a sunset over mountains tutorial as well?
I have an old one that’s for beginners if you want to give it ago. Here you are ua-cam.com/video/H71RrXyCN7M/v-deo.html
Your Awesome !
This video definitely helped me level up.
The rage is real my friend. I'm Glad u kept it in. that happens to me every 5 mins lolol
it's crazy because you can almost be done with a masterpiece then one wrong move and it's over
It's the Passion that's bushing us through the struggles.
the money we spend. mistakes we make.
there will be a time every painting will will be a masterpiece 😄✌🏼🎨
Ha ha ha 😂 I get the rage more than you know. I have probably binned 🗑 10 tutorials over the last year that have gone wrong and I’ve punched 🤜 💥 through the canvas 😂. As when your filming if it all goes wrong. Even with editing. You can’t use the footage. But keep in there buddy. As I find. A lack of preparation is when I get stressed 😩 and I try and force it. To get in a good relaxed 😎 flow state ✨. Have everything prepared. Put on some good tunes and relax. Much easier to get it right and have a good time at the same time 👍
Beautiful, Thank you! I definetly am going to try to do this like yours (that is if you don't mind).
Good for you. That’s fine. That’s what the tutorial is for. Have fun 👍
You are a great artist with the unusual ability to convey it to others.. Thank you!
Thanks very much, thats really kind.
great tutorial...thank you
can you draw this with no experiences on painting?
Yeah why not. The man who thinks he can, and the man who thinks he can’t. Are both right!
Superb ❤.... Why his channel is so underrated....... You draw so beautiful
Thank you. Don’t worry. The channel is starting to grow 🌱. It’s like anything in life. Anything great takes time and you make a lot of mistakes whilst learning. Some of my first videos are soooo bad lol 😂. Go watch them if you want a good laugh 😆. So they didn’t deserve much views. UA-cam is fantastic as as you get better at your craft and making videos. They will show it to more and more people. So you have to work hard and always improve. Which is awesome. But thank you very much for the support 🙏.
Which type of brush you are using here?
A large round brush from a shop called hobbycraft in the Uk 🇬🇧. They come as a pack for about £10. But I’ve put links in the description box here under the video. To get similar ones depending where you live. Hope that helps.
Wow! That’s so impressive and thanks for step by step tutorial. And it’s very helpful for me sir. ☺️❤️
Keep safe!🙏🏻
Thanks very much. Glad it helps.
Have seen your painting video for the first time. Enjoyed it thoroughly. End result is great !!
Hi Murry, just found you channel and love it. I am a bit of a newbie and want to try this. I went on to your amazon shop to order the.paints you used for this painting but I can't see the paints you listed? I could probably get them elsewhere but I would like to support you if possible
Hi Stephen. Thank you I appreciate that. The problem is the paints might not be available in certain countries. They are called Pebeo decocreme. About £5 a tube in the UK, but where very expensive other countries. Hence why I try to teach people how to mix all the colours.
Love your channel. Well explained. I think if you showed your photographic reference it would be helpful. Thank you
Thanks Karen. Sometimes the tutorials are out of my imagination and sometimes I take a clouds from one reference photo and say a wave from another. But if I have any photos that I paint a tutorial from I will try and include it.Thanks for the feedback as its good for me to listen what helps the viewers at home. Happy painting.
That os just so beautiful and your tutorials are so detailed
Очень красиво! Но блик от солнца на воде сдвинут вправо,это видно и мешает любоваться закатом...
Hi that's my first video i watch for you and i really like how spontaneous and I even liked you more when you mentioned Bob Ross, good job I really like your work I definitely subscribed looking forward to watch more of your videos😊from Jordan with love
Sorry just seen this. Thanks very much 👍
Hi! Is it best to paint our canvas the burnt sienna color first? Will it look similar if I use a white canvas
You can paint on white canvas. I just find it easier for me to use a dark tone so I can see where I need to add thicker paint.
You made my life x10 more happier 💗 thnx you so much amazing job nice vibes ✨️
Bless you. That made my day. Thanks 😊 a lot 👍
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Btw you got a little paint on your sweater. C:
Thank you. Don't worry I always paint in scruffy clothes and wipe the paint on my top lol
how does so little paint cover so much? i have to use 10x the amount...do you mix with water or something?
What is the purpose of painting the canvas the burnt sienna before starting the actual piece?
Gorgeous gorgeous painting. Tqvm Murray for teaching!! 🎨❤️
Your very welcome. Glad it helps 👍🏼
Awesome painting, thanks for the baby wipes tip
I appreciate your share so much! You really understand the concept of color and how light bounces. You've taught me something here!
The video is great but your canvas has a base before you start tutorial. Where do I find the how to for base colors? Thank you
I am brand new at this and you are helping me learn so much!!!! Thanks for what you do. I almost gave up until I started watching your tutorials!!! You are a great artist and it is awesome that you are humble enough to take the time to teach what you know to people like me!!! Thanks😁😁🤸🤸⭐⭐🎀🎀
No worries. I’m glad the tutorials are helping. A lot of painting is just being more aware and using the right equipment. Once you know it gives you confidence. The more confidence you have the more you will relax and it becomes automatic. So keep practicing and never give up. Attitude ✨ is the key 🔑
Thích Hữu Đằng nhất
It's amazeing are you useing water and dovyou blend with a dry brush
thanks a lot for this
Brilliant work sir. And thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and techniques
Thank you for the nice comment
Thanks for being realistic with the whole process even the bristles shedding it's a part of the whole experience of art lol! We need more realistic people teaching!!
Ha ha ha, you are very welcome. There are some bits I do have to edit out like me swearing or when I get paint everywhere lol. But I do want to show people everyone makes mistakes and everyone has things that go wrong. If you want a real laugh watch my first tutorials. They are terrible. It's hilarious. But again I want to show people. You only learn and get better through experience. So don't be afraid to make mistakes, learn from them, fix them and go again better each time.
Love your channel!!! Big fan here!
Much appreciated. Let us know if there is anything you want to learn and I will try to include it in a tutorial 👍🏼
I have a question about your crimson color on the palate, it looks a purple tone and not red tones? what color is it
Wunderschön ❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙
what kind of paint u used, brand name pls because pigment is high
Fabulous!
I have been trying to do a sunset for months now and my sky keeps looking like a cartoon. I kept saying you would think a sky would be easy bc the sky always looks different & clouds are all shapes but you have explained this so good. I understand it more & going to attempt it again
That's excellent to hear. Good luck and happy painting.
My sky also looks like a cartoon.😭 Watching this video to motivate myself For another try.
Thank you. I am learning so much with your tutorials. I have started painting only 6 months ago and I feels already a good degree of confidence.
😊Paola from West Sussex 😄👋
Thats awesome. I am super happy the tutorials are helping you.
I'd describe this as insanely good. Have just successfully (at last) completed one of your earlier sunsets and it has to be the best work I've ever done. For once, i am totally happy with it after refusing to give up on it. You are right when you say if not happy with something, go over it again. I did exactly that❤
Thank you so very much for making this so easy to follow. I'm new to painting and your videos are perfect. I'll be a pro in no time😆😆😁
Your welcome. Just keep practicing and believe in yourself and your right. Won’t take long to master painting 🎨 ✨
Thank you for this fantastic video! I really appreciate how you explain things so well. Particularly, speaking about warm and cool tones and also how the clouds vary in tones above these places in the sky. So helpful! I'm also really glad you left the dreadful purple smudge part in the video. Haha! That helps us all to know that you are human too! Thank you!
No worries. I like to leave all my mistakes in the tutorials. As everyone makes them, and not everything goes perfect first time. What’s great about mistakes is it makes you more aware to fix things and try new techniques.
Hi Murray. Beautiful painting and really like your teaching style, so gonna give this a go ! What size canvas do you recommend ? I have a 11x14 canvas panel...is that good or Larger? Thanks
Thanks Michael, much appreciated. I used a canvas panel around the same size for the painting. So that would be perfect. Maybe practise on that size and if it turns out great you can always go bigger next time. Have fun.
Beautiful work thank you for sharing your incredible skills
No worries. Hopefully I will do some more advanced tutorials in the next few months for everyone 👍🏼
So far I haven't seen a comment regarding the correct pronunciation of that blue, Prussian Blue. It's pronounced prush-in, emphasis on the prush.
Lovely painting and great guide. Thank you for sharing your painting and talent with us. Great tip with that lavender color. Pax.
Thank you so much for the wonderful master class! I'm just obsessed with sunsets - I already have several paintings with a sunset on the sea, on the lake and in the mountains, but I fell in love with your sunset again and I want to draw it (I'm a novice "artist"). And after your master class, I can even draw from a photo, because I understood everything! Thank you, I subscribed to your channel.
Aww bless you. Thanks very much.
@@MSTEWARTPAINTINGS 😍🤗
HI, I must say I am so glad and enthused finding your tutorials. I am past the beginner stage however I always love learning from any level. You have broken down and simply explained the why's and reasons things work and don't work in painting. BRAVO how you communicate. I use oil but your principles are the same and have helped me from this one video tremendously. I have subscribed and can't wait to watch and learn from your amazingly simple but effective teachings. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge......Henry
This was one of the best tutorials I’ve seen. Well done!
Thanks very much

Stunning, I have been working on paintings like this for many years, but. Is I am going to use your technique. Thank You.
great instructional tutorial!
Thank you. I’ve never taught before. Just since the pandemic. So I’m glad the tutorials are easy to understand 😊
I plan to try this in oils. Cross your fingers.
Thanks!
Thank you very much. It is very much appreciated.
Wow that is so beautiful I am going to definitely try painting this! Thanks for giveing details!!!
Thank you. Happy painting.
Se puede traducir el video en Español?, gracias.
Pardon. Mi español no es muy bueno.
Pero estoy seguro de que puedes tener subtítulos en español.
Love this video. Where could I purchase a color palate like the one you are using?
There are links in the video description. But they are called tear away paper pallets. So just ask in an art shop or off google.
Thank you so much for sharing your great wisdom!!! This was SO helpful for me!!!!
To AnYone: How would you 'wash' a paint stained jacket, . . . . asking for a friend, LOL.
I take a sharp knife and cut out all the stains! It works great!!it'
Ha ha I'm just kidding mate! I don't think you can remove paint from clothing once it's dried.

I can’t stop looking at it… love it ☺️💙
I really learned in your tutorial, I'm learning how to paint sunsets ❤️
Well done. Keep it up 👍
Thank you for this tutorial! I think I’m always too impatient when I’m trying to paint so what happens all the time is I mess it up. Your tutorial is solid evidence that I need to slow down and be patient w it😭😭thank you
Wow
Thank you for colours it was so helpful blending etc xxx

Preciosa obra de arte, parece una fotografía ❤
Murray only just found you what a top top man iv been struggling your a fantastic tutor thank you
Beautifully done! Thanks for sharing your talents!
You are very welcome. Happy painting.
Great 👍
Why do you use burnt sienna in your canvas as background? How do you know what colour to use for the background colour to treat your canvas?
I always use burnt sienna as its a dark colour. When painting lighter colours on top of it. It shows me where I have missed areas and where I might need to add more paint or a second layer of paint. You don't have to. But it's a handy painting trick. As if you have bits of your painting that are showing the burnt sienna you notice them straight away and can rework them. Unlike a white canvas where you might not notice it. But you can use any colour.
Thank you very much for your reply.
Thanks Murray ❤️ really enjoyed it. 😊
I will use this tutorial to guide me through painting this one picture with similar clouds, ty
Spectacular! 🙏💕
Absolutely one of the best videos I’ve watched to date. And I’ve watched a lot since starting to learn how to paint. Thanks for the great tutorial!
